How to connect a video card to a PC in 3 steps: instructions for dummies

The technique is outdated. Video card — too, no matter how powerful it was at the time of purchase. We figure out how to connect a video card to a computer on our own — instructions for strength even for beginners.

Preparing to disconnect the video card

Do not remove the discrete card abruptly — this can lead to serious malfunctions in the PC. That is why it is necessary to programmatically deactivate the device first. Then the system will be ready to connect a new video card.

To find and disable the old discrete graphics card, you need to look inside the computer. First you need to make sure that it is disconnected from the network. Peripherals must also be disconnected before the case can be opened.

Important : self-disassembly of the case means the removal of the warranty on it.

What to do:

  1. Remove the side panel of the case, which is located on the opposite side of the wall with the motherboard installed (where there are a lot of ports, there is usually a motherboard). Most cases have screws. They need to be unscrewed to remove the sides.
  2. After you need to make sure that the installed power supply is powerful enough to handle the new GPU. To do this, you need to compare the indicator with the technical characteristics of the video card: the PSU power indicator must not be lower than recommended on the manufacturer’s website, if it is lower, the power supply will have to be changed. It is recommended to choose a device with a margin of 20-30%: this will come in handy for an upgrade.
  3. It is important to make sure that the motherboard is also compatible with the new graphics card. This is determined by the presence of free PCI-E slots. Depending on the GPU model, one or two slots may be required.
  4. The dimensions of the video card must also be taken into account, because it must fit in the case. The dimensions of the device are indicated in the specifications.

Note : the PSU is connected to the motherboard via a PCI-E connector, which is the standard for modern models, but if the power supply has been in use for 10 years or more, there may be problems with connector compatibility.

To the topic: How to choose a compatible motherboard and video card: a guide in 4 sections

Choosing a graphics card

It is important to find the right balance between price and performance, especially if you have a limited budget for buying a device. Such nuances as appearance or lighting will not affect performance in any way, but the price of such GPUs will be higher. Much more important for games is an efficient cooling system, memory capacity, support for the latest version of DirectX and openGL technology.

Things to consider when looking for a video card:

  • system requirements for programs that the user wants to install;
  • feedback from gamers, editors and model testers;
  • memory size: stock is good, but if you want to save money, don’t overpay for the option with a lot of memory.

You should also take into account the power of the video card — this affects its popularity among miners and the price. The “cooler” the video is, the more likely it can be used for cryptocurrency mining. That is why miners are buying up top-end video cards indiscriminately — therefore, the price of the remaining models may differ from what is expected.

For those who want simple games and basic photo processing, inexpensive cards like HP NVIDIA Quadro P400 2GB GDDR5 Graphics or Gigabyte GeForce GT710 2GB DDR5 Silent. As an alternative for AMD fans, the 4GB AFOX Radeon RX 550 4GB DDR5 will do.

If you want to build a gaming monster, GIGABYTE Radeon RX 6900 XT 16 GB is suitable for AMD, and GeForce RTX3070 8 GB for NVIDIA fans. Buying such video cards, the user will receive several years of a “flying” PC even on the most voracious games and 4K video rendering.

Note: 10 best models of inexpensive gaming video cards

Disabling the old video card

When replacing discrete memory, you must first deactivate it in the system. At the same time, at any time it will be enough to return the old video card to its place, install the drivers, and the system will start seeing it again. You can remove it from the system by deleting all the «firewood» to it. This is done like this:

  1. Open «Settings». The easiest way to do this is by clicking on the «Start» button and then clicking on the gear on the left.
  2. Go to the «Applications» block
  3. Delete those applications that are associated with the video card. For AMD video cards, you need to remove all programs where this abbreviation is present, and for Nvidia — all applications with the brand name.
  4. Restart PC.

In most cases, this solution is sufficient. If the required video is not in the «applications» block, you need to remove the driver manually.

Next, you can proceed to remove the device. Old vidyashki (before 2010) often look like a collection of chips — and here the user needs a diamond eye to find his name on the device. Visually, such cards merge with other boards, and it will take a little time to find them. But finding a modern discrete video card is very simple — it is easy to notice by the fans that are located right on the case. The thing is that during active work, the video card can heat up to 80 ° C, and such an engineering solution helps not to overheat at peak loads.

Informative article: How to properly overclock the monitor to 75, 100 Hertz: on the example of 3 video cards To do this, follow this instruction:

1. Power off the PC
Disconnect it from the power supply so that when replacing a part, it will not cause an electric shock and parts will not burn out.

2. Open housing
You need to carefully remove the screws on the sides of the device to have direct access to the graphics card.

3. Find video card
Older models are quite large in size, so it will be easy to find them. Those cards that were released 3-5 years ago are distinguished by a gaming design “with bells and whistles”, so you can see it right away.

4. Remove the video card
First, you should carefully disconnect it from the motherboard and power supply, then pry and remove the device from the system unit.

That’s it! The old card is removed and you can proceed to install a new one. This is done as follows:

  1. Insert the card into an empty slot and press it lightly until you hear a click. This means that the card «fell into place»
  2. Fix the device with the screws supplied. This is necessary to finally fix the card so that it does not fall out when transferring the PC and during active work.
  3. Connect the card to the motherboard, monitor and power supply (if required)
  4. Close the system unit and start the PC.

Usually, Windows 10 PCs automatically «recognize» new parts and find drivers for them on their own. If this did not happen, you should go to the manufacturer’s website and find the necessary «firewood» for your model. Then install them and restart your PC.

Video card installation: common mistakes There are three most common «problems».

  • Insufficient power supply

Modern graphics cards require a lot of power. Before connecting power to the video card, you need to make sure that the PSU has enough power to power the card. If the power turns out to be “weak”, you will have to look for a simpler video or change the power supply.

  • Make sure the motherboard is compatible with the new card

This can be determined by the presence of free PCI-E ports. If the «mother» has only one connector left, and the video card needs two, there is no way to legalize them.

  • Dimension fit

A card that is too small may fall out and a large one cannot fit. You should study the dimensions of the video card and correlate them with the dimensions of the slot in the PC.

Also, the following steps are not recommended during installation.

  • Touch PC components immediately after turning it off

Static electricity accumulates inside: even a small discharge can burn components. Better take care of grounding. To do this, you will need to attach a special antistatic wrist strap to the metal parts of the case.

  • Touch chips

This can lead to their damage and, consequently, to the failure of the video card.

  • Apply excessive force when installing

It’s better to double check if the correct slot is selected. In addition, by acting carelessly, the user may touch and damage neighboring components.

  • Disregard fixing device

It must be securely fastened with screws or a latch.

  • Forget about checking the correct connection

You can find out if everything is correct using the instructions for the motherboard.

Installing drivers and testing them

Before installing new drivers, you must remove the old ones so that the hardware does not conflict. After removing the «firewood», the image may deteriorate greatly. This is normal: when there are no drivers, the monitor automatically switches to the minimum resolution.

Installing the correct software for your graphics card is quite simple. If earlier it was on disks, now it can be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website. Just follow the instructions on the screen.

If the manufacturer provides a driver on a disk or flash drive, they are often outdated by the time of purchase (since the manufacturer releases software improvements every few months). To install modern video card drivers, you only need a stable Internet connection and a few free minutes that you are ready to spend on updating.

It is not recommended to use third-party software. Many such programs were caught by professionals in mining, which sucked out the “life force” of a computer at an accelerated rate. In the process of updating, the manufacturer’s website and the built-in system properties are sufficient.

Checking the connection of the video card is easy, as the instruction consists of 3 basic steps. The type of verification itself depends on the preferences of the user — one is enough numbers in benchmarks, the second will prefer testing on real programs.

Video Card Synthetic Test

Tests

Real use
Restart the computer
Although many systems write that firewood is already integrated into the system, they fully become part of the OS only after the user turns the computer off and on.
Download Enable a powerful program that will show the full power of the card
The most popular similar programs: 3DMark, FurMark, Geekbench, AIDA64 When buying a 4 GB video card, you should try to turn on the game, the system requirements of which include a 3-4 GB video card
Start program Check for lags
At the end it will show the real «numbers» of the system If there are none, the card is working properly

It is not difficult to connect a video card yourself, since now all manufacturers make “user friendly” interfaces (user friendly). The main thing is to choose the right model and carry out the installation carefully. For those who are not confident in their abilities, it is better to contact the service center. It is more reliable and the warranty for PC components is not canceled, as the craftsmen will carefully install the part in its place.

Old drivers must be uninstalled before installing new drivers so that the hardware does not conflict. After removing the «firewood», the image may deteriorate greatly. This is normal: when there are no drivers, the monitor automatically switches to the minimum resolution.

Uninstalling the software associated with the card is optional, but highly recommended. When assembling a PC yourself, there is always a chance of “catching bugs” when installing new parts. Removing and reinstalling programs from the manufacturer reduces the chances of getting a system failure when installing the card to almost zero.

Problems that are unlikely to be avoided when building a computer

learns from the mistakes of others

Author profile

Not everyone takes the risk of building a PC on their own out of fear that something might go wrong.

But some still take that risk because they know their efforts will pay off. Readers of Tinkoff Magazine shared their experience and told what difficulties they had to face in the process of assembling a computer.

These are community reader stories. Collected into one material, carefully edited and formatted according to editorial standards.

Issue #1

Cheap accessories

Stanislav Zveryanov
saved on the motherboard

I made a mistake with the motherboard: I took the cheapest one, which had few power connectors on the system unit. As a result, all the connectors in the front and the backlight do not work — there is simply nowhere to plug the cables from them. But the motherboard is a fundamental piece of iron, it is very difficult to remove it from the assembly, so I scored it.

Georgy Aleksandrovich
underestimated the importance of the HDMI cable

After three hours of assembly, I pressed the ribbed round button on the system unit — and here it is . .. nothing works. Panic began: a computer costing in my monthly salary is not included. What is the problem? What does not work? How to fix it?

The system unit itself seemed to work: the lights on the video card were blinking, the coolers were spinning, but there was no picture on the “TV”. The girl blamed the HDMI cable for everything — I consulted with a friend, and he agreed. He advised me to buy a branded one, and not to stick a Chinese noun. I went to a chain store nearby and bought a new wire. He asked for a branded one: Philips, Panasonic or something like that. It was a pity to give away a kiloruble, but when the desktop with my dads appeared on the screen, I was just happy.

Igor Gorshkov
was a victim of a fraudster

When buying memory from hands, a dishonest seller came across — it did not work. He first promised to return the money, but then disappeared. As it turned out, he did the same with many in the city. But I was able to sell the memory at half price to a computer service to a friend who revived it. As a result — the loss of 500 R.

How much does it cost to build a computer yourself

Nikita Vstovsky
realized that the miser pays twice

I saved on the case, because of this it was very inconvenient to assemble: it did not have normal grooves for cable management. In addition, the headphone output on the front panel is “phonite”, and one of the coolers in the case broke after six months.

Issue #2

Ignorance of all the subtleties

Yaroslav Rube
lost on the first assembly

The biggest difficulty, surprisingly, was the installation of the processor. I put the «stone» in the slot and started to close the lid, and it was very tight, with great effort. I thought something was wrong. I started checking the connectors for compatibility. I made sure I picked them right. In addition, the arrow on the processor coincided with the arrow on the slot, but the lid did not close.

I pulled out the processor and saw deep scratches on it at the edges — where the slot cover is pressing it down. I always thought that it was a very fragile thing, so I was confused at first. I decided that I had ruined the processor, but before taking it to the store, I called a friend who had assembled more than one hospital for himself. It turned out that the lid was supposed to close so hard — even more effort had to be made. And the edges, on which there are scratches, are necessary for the cover to press the processor into the slot.

Dmitry Bacherikov
exchanged RAM

After installing Windows, the system began to crash and constantly reboot, each time with a new error. After consulting with familiar masters and tests, it turned out that all the problems were due to one bar of RAM. We quickly went to the store and took another memory instead of Corsair, 200 R more expensive — Crucial Ballistix Black, also two 8 GB sticks. After we installed it, everything worked as it should.

Johnny Silverhand
builds a PC for family

When I was building a computer for my father-in-law, I came across the fact that the motherboard does not support processors with integrated graphics, despite a suitable processor socket. I had to exchange money. The main thing is, if you doubt the compatibility of parts, do not try to install them. There are traces of installation on the contacts, and without them, the seller will be much more willing to exchange components for you.

Problem #3

Lack of space in the system unit

Alexander Treshin
learned an important lesson from the first assembly

This was not my first assembly experience. For the first time, it turned out that the video card went right back to back. Due to the massive cooler, it was necessary to remove the radiator bars from the RAM, and the slots for hard drives at that time were located in such a way that in order to replace or install new ones, each time you had to remove the video card and, in general, perform many sophisticated manipulations.

This time, experience allowed all these inconveniences to be avoided. Only the process of installing a processor cooler was, and remains, the most difficult and, at the same time, the most important stage. There may be different ways to install a cooler, but, in my experience, they all require very difficult manipulations and have pitfalls.

My only mistake when choosing components is that for some reason I did not check if a full-sized ATX board would fit into my compact case, and decided to take mATX, although I could have taken a full-sized one. It doesn’t really make much of a difference, but my case has a USB-C connector that needs a rare USB Type E on the motherboard, which I don’t have. Therefore, it does not work.

Issue #4

Unforeseen difficulties with software

Pavel Kononenko
suffered with water cooling and drivers

There are problems with the water cooling of the NZXT Kraken X52. It has a screen that displays the temperature and clock speed of the processor. At first he didn’t work at all. It turned out that it requires a 4-pin Molex connector on the power supply to power it, although this is not written anywhere and was found only in the depths of Reddit. One more of the pins needs to be connected exactly to the USB 3.0 connector on the board. Figured it out.

And then it turned out that the screen does not work without the manufacturer’s software. But this software is so clumsy that it resets the settings every time you restart your PC and requires recalibration. Spit on it.

How to set up graphics in games so that the computer does not slow down

Victor M
searched the entire Internet

The biggest difficulty was finding information about the Pegatron Seediq L6 monoblock. There are only one or two videos about disassembly and cleaning on YouTube, the minimum technical specifications are published on the sites.

And yes, the manufacturer’s website is generally «dead» — God only knows how to get into the BIOS. I was advised to look for a certain jumper that is installed in monoblocks to block the BIOS, which is no longer relevant. However, if you don’t have a pre-installed operating system on your hard drive, then you won’t be able to install it.

Issue #5

cable management

Yaroslav Rube
hardly fits all cables

This was the first experience of building a PC manually, so there were difficulties. The motherboard documentation answers most of the questions, but this does not cancel the fuss with wires. It was not easy to place them compactly on the back wall. It turned out that there was little space for cable management in the case, but the lid still managed to be closed.

Issue #6

General inattention

Regina Vakhitova
did not check the RAM

When I assembled everything, the PC simply did not start. It was my first self-assembly experience, and I started to panic: “What if I broke something? Suddenly something is defective? The next day, it turned out that she simply did not snap the RAM sticks to the end.
