AMD/ATI was the first of the manufacturing giants to give users the opportunity to evaluate the next generation of graphics accelerators with support for the new Microsoft DirectX 11 API. from NVIDIA, but in both cases, so far it was about users who need powerful solutions, primarily focused on 3D games. Thus, users who want to upgrade their work PC or home theater by installing a video card with support for the new API have been out of work until now. And in February 2010, AMD/ATI introduced the least productive and most affordable solution of the HD5000 series — ATI Radeon HD 5450.

When comparing the characteristics of the most affordable new-generation video card with other solutions from ATI, it is clear that it has not gone far from its predecessors and is far behind GPUs for mainstream accelerators in the Radeon HD 5000 line.

Now let’s look at the architecture of the Radeon HD 5450 video core:

Since the Radeon HD 5450 is the most affordable video accelerator in the series and is designed to work in low-cost systems, this is reflected in its architecture. The video core contains two SIMD engines, each of which has four texture units and eight stream processors. Each stream processor includes five ALUs, which are called stream cores. As a result, each SIMD engine contains 40 stream cores and 4 texture units. In total, two engines give us 80 streaming cores and eight texture units. Nearby we can see four blocks of raster operations ROP. The memory controller, unfortunately, is 64-bit. Thus, it is obvious that the Radeon HD 5450 GPU is as simple as possible.

Well, it’s time to get acquainted directly with the review on the Radeon HD 5450, in our case, on the example of the ASUS EAH5450/DI/1GD3(LP) video adapter.

/DI/1GD3(LP) describes the capabilities of any «reference» solution based on the Radeon HD 5450 with 1024 MB of memory on board.

The ASUS Radeon HD 5450 comes in a small carton. The appearance of the package, the winged horseman in its design is the same for the entire series of Radeon HD 5000 graphics accelerators from ASUS. The only difference here is the use of the ATI Radeon HD 5450 graphics processor, which underlies our test subject and other logos that emphasize proprietary technologies and video accelerator capabilities. Separately, the use of a fan with an extended service life in the cooling system of this solution, the presence of 1 GB of GDDR3 memory and an HDMI connector are noted.

The reverse side of the package describes features typical for the entire fifth series of ATI graphics accelerators, and this solution in particular, such as support for Microsoft DirectX 11, the implementation of ATI Eyefinity technology, and also focuses on some proprietary ASUS technologies and provides system requirements. The latter confirms that this video card will be able to work in almost any system.

ASUS EAH5450/DI/1GD3(LP) package includes:

  • CD with drivers and utilities;
  • Instruction CD in many languages;
  • Brief instructions for installing a video card.
  • Half plug for installing a graphics card in small cases.

Poor bundle is standard for solutions of this level.

Externally, the ASUS EAH5450/DI/1GD3(LP) video card has a slightly redesigned design compared to the «reference» from ATI. Also, this video card differs from the standard in its original cooling system, in the design of which, along with an aluminum radiator, a fan is used, in the center of which there is a company logo.

In terms of dimensions, the ASUS EAH5450/DI/1GD3(LP) graphics accelerator corresponds to its «reference» analogue on the Radeon HD 5450, however, the accelerator version from ASUS has a slight advantage over the reference solution, since the use of a fan in the cooling system made it possible to make a heatsink more than two times thinner than on the standard. This, coupled with the fact that the board has a low profile, will allow you to install ASUS EAH5450/DI/1GD3(LP) in the most compact cases.

Due to the specific purpose of this video accelerator, it does not have connectors for CrossFire bridges, although the technology itself must be supported by software. As we can see, half of the video memory chips are located on the back side of the textolite.

Low power consumption ASUS EAH5450/DI/1GD3(LP) ensures the operation of this video card without additional power supply and, obviously, it is not necessary to say that the installed cooler will be enough to cool the video card.

Video accelerator interface panel occupies one slot. The panel contains the most requested outputs: one universal DVI output, HDMI multimedia output and analog VGA output. In addition, the design features of the board allow you to dismantle a standard single-slot plug and install a two-slot half plug (included in the kit) instead of it for using ASUS EAH5450/DI/1GD3(LP) in small-sized cases.

The front side of the printed circuit board does not differ in layout density: in addition to the GPU itself, there are half of the video memory chips and components of the power stabilization unit. The memory chips were left without a heatsink, which is natural for a video card of this level.

The 40nm AMD RV810 chip has the smallest footprint (53mm2) of the entire Radeon HD 5000 family, resulting in the lowest performance and power consumption. The frequency of the GPU corresponds to the recommended value of 650 MHz. The most affordable member of the Radeon HD 5000 family has 80 unified shader processors, 8 texture units, and the number of ROPs is 4. ns, which allows them to operate at an effective frequency up to 1600 MHz. Since the resulting frequency of the memory chips on the video card is exactly the same, there are not so many hopes for its noticeable overclocking.

When there is no load, the chip operation frequency drops to 157 MHz, and the video memory slows down to 740 MHz (1480 MHz effective frequency). This provides an even greater reduction in energy consumption and, accordingly, the temperature and noise of the cooling system.

Obviously, the simplest power system will suffice for the Radeon HD 5450. Two simple single-phase converters are used to power the graphics processor and video memory chips.

The ASUS EAH5450/DI/1GD3(LP) cooling system differs from that recommended by ATI. In addition to the aluminum heatsink with plastic latches, it includes a compact fan mounted in the center of the heatsink. As already noted, this approach to the organization of the cooling system made it possible to significantly reduce the size of the heatsink and the thickness of the accelerator in comparison with the reference solution from ATI, which makes it possible to install the ASUS video adapter in the smallest cases. However, some users will probably find the ASUS EAH5450/DI/1GD3(LP) solution less successful, as the graphics card design has moving parts, which can affect durability and usability.
