Hyped as the «Ultimate GEforce», the 1080 Ti is NVIDIA’s latest flagship 4K VR ready GPU. It supersedes last years GTX 1080, offering a 30% increase in performance for a 40% premium (founders edition 1080 Tis will be priced at $699, pushing down the price of the 1080 to $499). It also supersedes the prohibitively expensive Titan X Pascal, pushing it off poll position in performance rankings. The 1080 Ti is based on the Pascal architecture and features a slightly modified version of the same flagship GP102 silicon found in the Titan X Pascal. It has 11GB of the high bandwidth GDDR5X video memory (versus 12GB in the Titan X Pascal) and an impressive 11GB frame buffer. Like the Titan X Pascal, it features 12bn transistors and 3584 CUDA cores which can run at a boost clock speed of 1.582 GHz – 3% faster than the Titan X Pascal’s 1.531 GHz. This increased speed is partially attributable to the 1080 Ti’s new dualFET power system which allows the chip to run at higher power and more efficiently than ever before. The release of the 1080 Ti comes ahead of the competition from AMD’s Vega — rumored for release in Q2 2017. Vega is AMD’s next generation graphics card (following on from Polaris 10) featuring their new HBM2 die which is alleged to have eight times the capacity of GDDR5 with half of the footprint. NVDIA’s own next generation graphics cards (Volta) are in the pipeline for 2018. [Mar ’17 GPUPro]

Out of the box the reference 5700 XT has high burst speeds but under load it overheats and therefore drops frames to the extent that it is more or less unusable for demanding games like PUBG. In order to settle the card it was under volted by 120 mV and the maximum clock was lowered to 1,980 MHz (the stock BIOS and 19.9.1 driver defaulted the card to 2,030 MHz). The fan curve also had to be turned up to around 50% power at 75 degrees (which is a lot noisier than stock). After making these changes the card delivered far more consistent performance albeit with a reduced top speed and unacceptable (hair dryer) levels of noise. There were also incompatibilities with GTAV: enabling reflection MSAA resulted in very poor, almost matt, reflection fidelity (the same bug appeared on several Navi and Vega cards). The reference 5700 XT is great for beating cherry picked benchmarks, but it is not so great for playing games. Thousands of people, duped by sponsored marketing material, purchased the reference card expecting flagship performance, instead they got a shopping trolley with a V6 engine. It appears that the same marketing tactics were employed for the reference Vega 56 and 64 series of graphics cards which we will purchase for our gaming lab and generate effective Fps gaming metrics as soon as possible (results here). AMD appear to have very short term marketing strategists at the helm, they seem more concerned with this years bonuses than the longevity of the brand. [Jul ’19 GPUPro]

GeForce GTX 1080 Ti vs Radeon RX 5700 XT Graphics cards Comparison

In this comparison between GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and Radeon RX 5700 XT you will find out which graphics card performs better in today’s games. Bear in mind that third-party versions may have more efficient cooling and higher clock speeds. This will increase cards’ performance, though not by much. In addition to raw power you should also take into account the dimensions. Thicker models simply will not fit into a small mini-ITX case. The resolution of your monitor also affects the choice, since 4K gameplay requires a more powerful GPU. And don’t overspend on the graphics card. Other parts of your build may also need to be upgraded, save some money for the CPU or power supply. For some people GeForce GTX 1080 Ti will be the best choice, for others Radeon RX 5700 XT will be their preference. Study the comparison tables below and make your choice.
