  • The Ryzen 7 3800X has higher Level 3 Cache. This is useful when you have substantial multiprocessing workloads, many computationally intense simultaneous processes. More likely on a server, less on a personally used computer for interactive desktop workloads.
  • For some games, a cpu with a higher clock speed, or in a technical name IPC (Instructions per clock), has better results than other CPU’s with higher core count and lower core speed.
  • The Ryzen 7 3800X has a higher turbo clock boost. Turbo Boost is a CPU feature that will run CPU clock speed faster than its base clock, if certain conditions are present. It will enable older software that runs on fewer cores, to perform better on newer hardware. Since games are software too, it is also applicable to them.
  • The Ryzen 7 3800X has a smaller process size. The faster a transistor can toggle on and off, the faster it can do work. And transistors that turn on and off with less energy are more efficient, reducing the operating power, or “dynamic power consumption,” required by a processor.

    The Ryzen 9 3950X is the first 16-core processor for the mainstream AM4 platform. The processor market, just like after the introduction of the first generation of Ryzen, will never be the same. Two years later, the round of competition has gained such momentum that no one now even remembers the 4-core flagship Core i7.

    The first hints that AMD will introduce a 16-core processor on the AM4 appeared at CES earlier this year. On the Ryzen 3700X substrate, there would be exactly enough space for a third die with eight more processing cores.

    And in the summer of 2019, AMD officially introduced the «the world’s first 16-core gaming processor» with the highest boost frequencies and a power consumption of 105 watts, as in 8-core representatives. It all sounded too good to be true.

    The silence was broken only at the end of September: AMD nevertheless decided to officially announce that the release of new items is postponed to November. The press logically assumed that the fine crystals were still not so fine as to take such high frequencies with such low power consumption.

    Despite the fears, the processor still came out and fell into our hands for a short time. Let’s check if AMD managed to take their high bar.

    Synthetic tests

    Let’s start with synthetics. In the favorite test AMD Cinebench R20 , the new product immediately makes it clear who is the undisputed leader. And even without a competitor from Intel, everything is clear, given that even the 18-core i9-9980XE, which is more than 3 times more expensive, is significantly inferior.

    Precision Boost Overdrive gives a good increase in multi-threading, unlike the 3800X. True, you can forget about the promised 105 watts: in the rendering program Blender with PBO, power consumption consistently exceeds 200. Water cooling in pair with such a processor will obviously not be superfluous.

    Speaking of Blender: is native to multi-core processors, so the test result is expected. Overdrive did not allow the 8-core 3800X to speed up rendering, and the 16-core 3950X made it possible to reduce the time by another 3 seconds.

    In the benchmark Corona , the picture is repeated. But in the benchmark V-Ray PBO for 3800X was not useless.

    At Geekbench 5 3950X once again outperforms the «gold» Intel Core i9-9980XE with fewer cores, and the RBO further widened the lead.

    In video encoding with Handbrake , the separation of the «red» is not so impressive. Precision Boost works well on both systems.

    Tests in games

    This time we will compare both processors with the Precision Boost Overdrive technology turned on, because it should reveal itself to the fullest in games.
