    The AMD Radeon HD 4670 graphics card is based on a new and very successful architecture that was first seen in the Radeon HD 4800 series of graphics cards. Finally, you can also play comfortably on budget graphics cards!

    Some time after the launch of the Radeon HD 4800 family of video cards, AMD decided to please budget gamers with new Radeon HD 4670 and Radeon HD 4650 video cards. Being based on the RV730 graphics processor, they inherited the RV770 chip architecture, losing only in the number of functional blocks. AMD’s new product promises to be very «nimble», and the closest competitor of the Radeon HD 4670 in terms of price is the GeForce 9500GT video card with GDDR-3 video memory. The recommended price for the Radeon HD 4670 is $79.

    The video card turned out to be relatively small in size, it occupies only one expansion slot and does not require additional power.

    There are four memory chips on the back of the video card.

    On the front side of the video card, under the cooling system, there are four more memory chips.

    Made using the 55nm process technology, the RV730 graphics chip has a very modest size, although it contains 514 million transistors.

    The total amount of video memory is 512 MB and is made up of 8 chips. The memory bus width is 128 bits. GDDR-3 video memory chips are manufactured by Hynix and have an access time of 1.0 ns, which corresponds to an effective frequency of 2000 MHz, at which they operate.

    The Radeon HD 4670’s heatsink is made of copper, which helps it do its job in the literal sense without too much noise. The video card was tested for heating using the Firefly Forest test scene from the 3DMark test package at a resolution of 2048×1536 with 8x anti-aliasing and 16x anisotropic filtering. After several runs, the GPU temperature reached 83 degrees, while in idle, the GPU temperature was 61 degrees. Note that even at maximum load, the video card remained very quiet.

    We will conduct today’s testing on an overclocked test bench with the following configuration:

    Overclocking was done by increasing the multiplier, so there were no special problems.

    The direct competitor for the Radeon HD 4670 in the segment of video cards priced under $100 is the GeForce 9500GT with GDDR-3 video memory, so we took it first of all for our comparison. Since the tested video cards are typical representatives of the budget segment, we will test them in modes without full-screen anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, but, nevertheless, leaving other settings in games unchanged, that is, maximum. We made this decision because the Radeon HD 4670 video card promises to be very fast. In addition to the above video cards, Radeon HD 3650 and Radeon HD 3850 will take part in testing. We need the first one in order to evaluate the progress of the Radeon HD 4670 video card compared to the previous generation, the Radeon HD 3600, while the second one is close in terms of characteristics to the new product. It will be interesting to see if the new budget graphics card Radeon HD 4670 can compete on equal terms with the representative of the middle price segment of the previous generation of AMD video cards.

    The following drivers were used for testing:

    • Radeon HD 4670 graphics card used special Catalyst beta drivers;
    • for video card GeForce 9500GT ForceWare 177.79 drivers;
    • for Radeon HD 3650 and Radeon HD 3850 video cards Catalyst 8.8 drivers;

    Let’s start reviewing the results with 3DMark tests.

    In the 3DMark 06 test, the Radeon HD 4670 took second place, slightly behind the Radeon HD 3850. The difference in results between the new product and its rival, the GeForce 9500GT video card, is very large.

    In the 3DMark Vantage test, we see a similar picture, the Radeon HD 4670 turned out to be noticeably faster than the GeForce 9500GT.

    In the Call of Duty 4 game, the Radeon HD 4670 shows results close to the Radeon HD 3850. The GeForce 9500GT is far behind, it is faster than the outdated Radeon HD 3650.

    The situation is similar in the game Need for Speed ​​Pro Street Racing. The Radeon HD 4670 video card shows almost identical results to the Radeon HD 3850, while the GeForce 9500GT was again an outsider.

    In Call of Juarez, the gap between the Radeon HD 4670 and GeForce 9500GT is as big as ever. However, the novelty is not able to provide acceptable performance in this game with maximum settings, even without anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering. The only video card that showed an acceptable result (over 30 FPS) was the Radeon HD 3850, but only at 1280×1024.

    In the Race Driver: GRID game, the Radeon HD 4670 showed quite acceptable results, on the same level as the Radeon HD 3850. As for the GeForce 9500GT and Radeon HD 3650, they showed results close to each other, which are more than two times lower than the result Radeon HD 4670.
