Passmark

This is probably the most ubiquitous benchmark, part of Passmark PerformanceTest suite. It gives the graphics card a thorough evaluation under various load, providing four separate benchmarks for Direct3D versions 9, 10, 11 and 12 (the last being done in 4K resolution if possible), and few more tests engaging DirectCompute capabilities.

Benchmark coverage: 26%

3DMark 11 Performance GPU

3DMark 11 is an obsolete DirectX 11 benchmark by Futuremark. It used four tests based on two scenes, one being few submarines exploring the submerged wreck of a sunken ship, the other is an abandoned temple deep in the jungle. All the tests are heavy with volumetric lighting and tessellation, and despite being done in 1280×720 resolution, are relatively taxing. Discontinued in January 2020, 3DMark 11 is now superseded by Time Spy.

3DMark Vantage Performance

3DMark Vantage is an outdated DirectX 10 benchmark using 1280×1024 screen resolution. It taxes the graphics card with two scenes, one depicting a girl escaping some militarized base located within a sea cave, the other displaying a space fleet attack on a defenseless planet. It was discontinued in April 2017, and Time Spy benchmark is now recommended to be used instead.

Description

ATI started Radeon HD 5670 sales on January 14, 2010 at a suggested price of 119$. This is a desktop card based on the Terascale 2 architecture and 40 nm manufacturing process, primarily designed for office use. It has 1 GB of GDDR5 memory at 1000 GHz, and coupled with a 128-bit interface, this creates a throughput of 64.00 GB / s.

In terms of compatibility, this is a single-slot PCIe 2.0 x16 card. The length of the reference version is 168 mm. An additional power cable is not required for connection, and the power consumption is 64 W.

It provides poor performance in tests and games at the level of

2.64%

from the leader, which is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.

Passmark

This is a very common benchmark included in the Passmark PerformanceTest package. He gives the graphics card a thorough evaluation, running four separate tests for Direct3D versions 9, 10, 11, and 12 (the latter being done at 4K resolution whenever possible), and a few more tests using DirectCompute.

Benchmark coverage: 26%

3DMark 11 Performance GPU

3DMark 11 is Futuremark’s legacy DirectX 11 benchmark. He used four tests based on two scenes: one is several submarines exploring a sunken ship, the other is an abandoned temple deep in the jungle. All tests make extensive use of volumetric lighting and tessellation and, despite being run at 1280×720, are relatively heavy. Support for 3DMark 11 ended in January 2020 and is now being replaced by Time Spy.

3DMark Vantage Performance

3DMark Vantage is an outdated DirectX 10 benchmark. It loads the graphics card with two scenes, one of a girl running away from some kind of military base located in a sea cave, and the other of a space fleet attacking defenseless planet. Support for 3DMark Vantage was discontinued in April 2017 and it is now recommended to use the Time Spy benchmark instead.

    Our laboratory has already visited several graphics accelerators based on the mainstream Radeon HD 5670 graphics processor, and today we will talk about another representative of this family, but this time from Sapphire. The main feature of this particular version is the use of an alternative cooling system manufactured by the well-known Swiss company Arctic Cooling.

    We will not dwell on the architecture of the RV830 “Redwood” graphics core, because you can read about it in one of our previous articles, but go directly to the characteristics of the Sapphire Radeon HD 5670 (11168-00-40R):

    As we can see, in addition to using an alternative cooling system, the tested video card has a slightly modified set of image output interfaces, and it also has two connectors for connecting CrossFireX bridges, which theoretically allows you to combine up to four graphics cards on the Radeon HD 5670 graphics processor in one system. The remaining characteristics completely repeat those for the «reference» sample, which means that the performance will be identical.

    The box in which the graphics card is shipped has a traditional design for Sapphire products. And, despite its small size, it is quite informative. On the front side, the manufacturer notes that the package includes a full copy of the SimHD program and the video card is equipped with an Arctic Cooling cooling system, and also lists some of the technologies supported by the video card.

    On the back of the box we see another list of technologies supported by the Sapphire Radeon HD 5670 and a small advertising text in English.

    The computer requirements for the Sapphire Radeon HD 5670 installation and the main graphics accelerator specifications are listed on the side of the box. Note that the requirements for the power supply are quite modest: the manufacturer recommends power supplies with a power of 400 W or more, which will allow most users not to think about replacing the power supply when “upgrading” the video card.

    In addition to the video card itself, we found in the box:

    • Driver disk;
    • User’s Manual;
    • DVI-to-VGA adapter;
    • CrossFireX Bridge;
    • Disc with the full version of the ArcSoft SimHD plug-in for the TotalMedia Theater program.

    The delivery set contains everything you need for comfortable work with the video card, and even pleasant bonuses in the form of a CrossFireX bridge and a disk with the full version of the ArcSoft SimHD plug-in for the TotalMedia Theater program. However, it is unlikely to be useful to most users, because not everyone uses TotalMedia Theater (which starts at $30) to watch videos.

    The set of image output interfaces, as we have already mentioned, has undergone some changes compared to the «reference» card and is represented here by DVI-I, HDMI (with the ability to transmit 7.1-channel audio) and DisplayPort. Such a change, in our opinion, looks justified and expands the scope of the Sapphire Radeon HD 5670. Given the presence of a DVI-to-VGA adapter, users should not have any problems connecting a monitor, projector or plasma panel.

    The presence of two connectors for connecting CrossFireX bridges allows the owner of Sapphire Radeon HD 5670, if one card lacks the performance, to buy another video accelerator on the Radeon HD 5670, and thus make a smooth upgrade of the computer’s graphics subsystem. Note that the requirements for the power supply even for a tandem of video cards based on the Radeon HD 5670 are low and amount to only 475 watts.

    Sapphire Radeon HD 5670 PCB is made on blue textolite. The design and arrangement of elements on it generally repeat those for the «reference» sample, but with some differences (for example, the presence of CrossFireX connectors).

    On the reverse side we see the fastenings of the cooling system and half of the memory chips are placed here, which are not cooled in any way. Separately, it is worth noting that solutions based on the Radeon HD 5670 do not have a connector for additional power, which means that such a video card is powered only by the PCI Express bus and can consume no more than 75 watts of energy.

    The RV 830 “Redwood” graphics chip, made according to the 40 nm process technology, is the central part of the tested video card. It contains 400 unified shader processors and 8 rasterizers. The frequencies of the graphics core and memory are 775 MHz for the core and 4000 MHz for the video memory. Data exchange between the GPU and memory is carried out through a 128-bit bus. The rest of the characteristics are shown in the screenshot above.

    A total of 1 GB of GDDR5 memory is installed on the video card, recruited using eight chips. Chips manufactured by Hynix are labeled H5GQ1h34AFR and are documented to be capable of 0.8 ns access time, which corresponds to an effective frequency of 5000 MHz. Given that the memory installed on the Sapphire Radeon HD 5670 runs at 4000 MHz, you can try to speed it up with overclocking and get a good performance boost.

    The already mentioned video card cooling system manufactured by Arctic Cooling consists of an aluminum radiator and a plastic casing with an 80 mm fan.
