Motherboard Micro-Star 815EP Pro An interesting thing is that the i815 chipset was planned as a base platform for cheap computers, but it turned out that it became a real all-rounder. Until the moment when the Pentium-4 receives universal recognition and love (it is supposed to happen in a year), it is the i815 family that will be the basis for the cheapest computers with Celeron processors (i815G / EG without an AGP port), and for computers with an average performance (i815/E with integrated graphics core and AGP port), and for inexpensive workstations (i815EP without integrated graphics). Even the new Pentium-III with the Tualatin core, when it arrives, will work with the «B» version of the i815E. nine0004
Thus, the differentiation of motherboards based on the i815 chipset is growing. There are also the most simple boards in the microATX form factor, and quite «advanced» boards with many additional features. The latter includes the 815EP Pro (MS-6337 v.3) board manufactured by the well-known Taiwanese company Micro-Star.
This motherboard has an ATX form factor, the number of slots is 4 DIMM + 1 AGP + 6 PCI + 1 CNR. A feature immediately catches the eye — the absence of a metal radiator on the system controller (hub FW82815EP). Apparently, Micro-Star has no doubts about the sufficient stability of its product, so it did not consider it necessary to provide additional cooling for this chip. The design of the board is quite standard and deserves a «four-minus» rating due to the inconvenient location of the power connector. In addition, the processor and memory are in close proximity to each other, so installing a cooler or memory modules in an assembled machine will not be very convenient. The rest of the components are in place. nine0009 Almost all modern motherboards have built-in audio capabilities, and the 815EP Pro is no exception. It has the SigmaTel STAC9721T audio codec connected via AC-Link to the chipset (specifically, to the ICh3 hub). There is no sound controller, so if you want to have full sound with hardware audio processing, you will need to purchase a sound card.
The design of 815EP Pro is unified with the design of another board — 815EP Pro-R, which has a Promise Ultra100 controller. In addition to the ability to connect 4 more ATA/ATAPI devices, the owner of such a board can organize a RAID array of two or four identical hard drives with an ATA interface rather than SCSI. If you need increased performance — RAID Level 0 (stripping), if reliability — RAID Level 1 (mirroring). Although RAID controllers are still a novelty now, in the future the situation should change radically. nine0009 Like many other Micro-Star boards, the 815EP Pro has a set of LEDs (Diagnostics LEDs) that change color from red to green as the board goes through the bootup steps. In case of problems with the established combination, you can try to determine the cause of the failure, but in fact, it is not so easy to determine exactly which device is causing the system to not boot. However, the benefits of D-LED are definitely there. In addition to LEDs, optional voice diagnostics are provided, but not all boards have the chip responsible for this. nine0009 The Winbond W83627HF I/O controller monitors the temperatures, voltages, and rotation speeds of the fans connected to the board. It has the same capabilities as the popular W82782D in the past, that is, it monitors a large set of voltages, three fan tachometers. In addition, Winbond chips are correctly supported by all monitor programs.
In addition to the thermal diode built into the core of Intel processors, the board has a connector for connecting a TOP Tech. III, the temperature sensor itself is included. Using a flexible metal plate, the sensor can be attached, for example, to a video card heatsink, monitoring its temperature. nine0009 Additional pleasant things include LED signaling power supply to the board (for forgetful ones), built-in piezoelectric «speaker», additional bracket with two USB ports.
The BIOS of this board is the standard Award Modular 6.00 PG. Its options are quite standard, plus it is possible to assign IRQ to PCI slots, set parameters for overclocking the processor. In addition, during boot, the BIOS shows for a fraction of a second the data read from the monitoring chip (temperature, voltage), as well as CAS Latency, and warns if the memory module, according to data from the SPD, does not support such timings. nine0009 Now a little about the overclocking capabilities provided by 815EP Pro. As you know, the new Intel processors based on the Coppermine core of the cC0 stepping (you can recognize them by the marking: the declared supply voltage is 1.7 V) lend themselves very well to bus overclocking. No one will ignore the possibility of increasing the processor frequency by one and a half times without compromising system stability, right? Micro-Star usually doesn’t expect avid overclockers to use its boards, but today overclocking has a big enough effect on the overall attractiveness of the board for buyers, so the 815EP Pro has almost everything you need. First, the jumpers allow you to switch the frequency range 66-99.100-132.133 and up. In this case, the frequency multipliers of the PCI, AGP, FSB buses are correctly changed. Secondly, using the BIOS, you can select any desired frequency by simply entering a specific value. That is, the step is 1 MHz (the merit of the clock generator ICS 94231AF). Further, it is possible to change the processor core supply voltage (maximum — 1.95 V, step 0.05 V). You can also raise the voltage supplied to the I / O circuits of the processor (up to 3.6 V).
I have experimented with overclocking a Celeron-566 (66×8.5) processor. As expected, raising the bus frequency to 100 MHz was completely painless. The temperature of the chip operating at 850 MHz (284 MHz, or 52% above nominal) did not exceed 50°C. Stability was not affected at all, but performance increased significantly. If you were planning to buy a new processor, now is the time to do so. From all of the above, we can conclude that the 815EP Pro is a typical representative of the class of expensive and reliable motherboards based on the i815EP chipset, designed for use in low-end workstations or in computers of experienced and demanding users. nine0007
