Some early information about Acer’s new 32″ 4K high refresh rate gaming screen has been released by the company – here’s what we know so far. The Acer Predator X32 FP (previously also known as the X32 S) offers a 32″ sized IPS-type panel, offering a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution combined with a high 165Hz refresh rate, extending a bit beyond the growing range of 4K @ 144Hz models on the market now. It also has a 576 zone Mini LED backlight to offer improved HDR experience and backlight local dimming.

Acer Predator X32 FP specs

The Acer Predator X32 FP offers a 32″ sized IPS-type panel from AU Optronics, offering a 3840 x 2160 “4K” resolution, 1ms G2G response time normal / 0.5ms G2G response time max (take this with a pinch of salt), 1200:1 contrast ratio, 400 cd/m2 brightness (SDR), 178/178 viewing angles, 1. 07b colour depth and a wide colour gamut backlight thanks to the use of Quantum Dot coating, with 99% Adobe RGB coverage listed. The screen has also come factory calibrated with a dE <2.

The native refresh rate according to the AU Optronics panel spec is 160Hz, but Acer have also offered a small overclock to 165Hz (cus’ that extra 5Hz makes all the difference!) This is supported by adaptive-sync for variable refresh rates from both NVIDIA and AMD systems. The screen is expected to include the NVIDIA ‘G-sync Compatible’ and AMD ‘FreeSync Premium Pro’ certifications as well.

576 zone Mini LED Backlight for improved HDR

One of the most interesting features of the X32 FP is the use of a 576 zone Mini LED backlight, offering a direct backlight that can provide vastly superior local dimming to the wide range of edge lit local dimming options in the monitor market. Those are usually offering up to a max of about 32 local dimming zones and so cannot handle HDR content that well. The increased number of zones, while only being half that of top-end models like the Asus ROG Swift PG32UQX (1152 zones), should provide some very good performance relative to the edge-lit displays, helping to provide increased on screen contrast (dynamic range), deeper blacks, reduced halos/blooming and the capability for a higher peak brightness.

In fact the screen has been certified under the VESA DisplayHDR 1000 scheme offering a peak brightness of >1000 nits (1200 cd/m2 in this case). There is also the prerequisite colour enhancements as well with a 10-bit colour depth support and a wide colour gamut covering 99% Adobe RGB (DCI-P3 coverage not yet listed).

From the early specs listed by Acer the screen is advertised as supporting HDMI 2.1 (the latest press release states a single port, although original information we had was 4x) and 4K @ 120Hz for latest generation PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles, although the Instagram post includes a reference label for some kind of caveat, without the caveat then being provided. We know from our recent investigation that you cannot put any stock in to the HDMI 2.1 brand on its own, so we need to be a bit careful about making assumptions. We would hope that a major display manufacturer like Acer would be honest about the capabilities and actually not use the HDMI 2.1 name unless it offered HDMI 2.1 capabilities. Potential buyers should be on the look out in the final specs for listed features including colour capabilities at 4K 120Hz, and the inclusion of VRR and other features that a console might need.

Aside from the HDMI port(s) there is also 1x DisplayPort 1.4 included here with DSC to support 4K 165Hz 10-bit etc. Acer do list USB type-C connectivity with 90W power delivery, although it’s not officially confirmed if this is a data only port or whether it can support video via DP Alt mode as well (expected the latter). A built-in KVM switch is also included, which seems to be all the rage at the moment.

The stand should offer tilt, height and swivel adjustments (no rotate). An audio input, audio output and 4x USB 3.0 ports are also included along with 2x 7W speakers.

Availability and Pricing

Further information provided with a CES 2022 press release suggests that “The Predator X32 FP gaming monitor will be available in North America in Q2 2022 starting at USD 1,799; in EMEA in Q2 2022 starting at EUR 1,599.” We had an update more recently from Acer UK that it is expected late Q3 around August/September time in Europe.

Acer X32 FP 160Hz 4K IPS with 576-zone Mini LED backlight

A range of monitors now combine the ‘4K’ UHD resolution with a ~32″ screen size and high refresh rate. An increasing number of these also offer HDMI 2.1, allowing 120Hz ‘4K’ output on games consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The Acer X32 FP offers all of these attractive features, whilst also throwing in a high level of HDR capability. The styling is is similar to others in the Predator series, with a coated metal stand base with contoured feet and an artistically designed stand neck. Referred to in some regions as a ‘Dragon Claw Base’. The bottom bezel is dark grey plastic, whilst the top and side bezels adopt a dual-stage design. Including a slim panel border flush with the rest of the screen and a slender hard plastic outer part. The OSD (On Screen Display) is controlled by buttons and a joystick at the rear of the screen, running down the right side as viewed from the front.

A 32” IPS-type panel is adopted with 3840 x 2160 (‘4K’ UHD) resolution – the AU Optronics M320QAN02.8 AHVA (Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle) panel more specifically. A 165Hz refresh rate is supported alongside Adaptive-Sync, including Nvidia’s ‘G-SYNC Compatible Mode’ with a 48 – 165Hz VRR range plus LFC assumed. Integrated VRR may also be offered by the HDMI 2.1 port. Other aspects of note include a 1200:1 static contrast ratio, 178°/178° viewing angles and 10-bit colour support. A light to very light matte anti-glare screen surface is expected. A flicker-free Quantum Dot Mini LED backlight delivers a ≥99% Adobe RGB colour gamut and 1200 cd/m² peak HDR luminance, with 576 dimming zones. This is an FALD solution panel manufacturer AUO refers to as ‘AmLED’ (Adaptive Mini LED). A factory calibrated sRGB emulation mode is also included, with a specified DeltaE

A 1ms or ‘up to 0. 7ms’ grey to grey response time is specified. As usual, don’t pay too much attention to such figures – though note that this is a grey to grey measurement rather than MPRT as specified on some competing models. Low Blue Light (LBL) settings are also included, promoting a more relaxing viewing experience. The stand attaches centrally via 100 x 100mm VESA and can be replaced by a VESA 100 compatible alternative if preferred. The included stand offers tilt, swivel and height adjustment. The ports mainly face downwards and include; DC power (external ‘power brick’), DP 1.4 (with DSC), 4 HDMI 2.1 ports (48 Gbps), USB-C (90W PD, DP Alt Mode, upstream data), a 3.5mm audio output and 2 USB 3.0 ports (plus 2 upstream). 2 additional USB 3.0 ports are found at the left side as viewed from the front. KVM support is also included, allowing USB devices to be shared between multiple systems. 2 x 7W speakers also feature.

This press release confirmed the monitor was expected Q2 2022 with an RRP of ~$1800 USD, though release date slipped due to supply chain disruption. As of January 2023, this long-awaited monitor has been listed for ~$1350 USD.
