Description

The CPU cooler comes in a colorful box made of lightweight corrugated cardboard.

On the outer planes of the box, the cooler itself is depicted, a description of the product is given, its features are listed, technical characteristics are given, there is also a drawing with the main dimensions. The inscriptions are mainly in English, but the listing of features is available in several languages, including Russian. The cooler in the box is protected by polyethylene foam inserts. Accessories are packed in plastic bags.

The kit includes an installation manual in English, which can be downloaded as a PDF file from the manufacturer’s website. The instruction is mostly in pictures, so it is understandable without translation.

Fasteners are made of hardened steel (excluding plastic washers and plate on the back of the motherboard) and have a durable galvanized coating.

The cooler is equipped with a remote heatsink, to which the heat from the base is transferred through four heat pipes. The tubes are, of course, copper. At the sole of the heat sink, the tubes are flattened and pressed into a thick aluminum plate. The planes of the tubes adjacent to the processor are ground and slightly polished. There are barely pronounced grooves on the sole of the heat sink between the tubes and the ribs of the sole. The working plane of the heat sink is almost perfectly flat, before installation it is protected by a plastic film.

There is no pre-applied thermal interface, but the manufacturer has attached a small bag of thermal paste to the cooler. The tests used high-quality thermal paste from another manufacturer. Looking ahead, we will demonstrate the distribution of thermal paste after the tests are completed. On AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processor:

It can be seen that the thermal paste was distributed in a thin layer over almost the entire plane of the processor cover, and its excess was squeezed out along the edges. The tight contact patch is large.

The flat base of the heat sink gives a chance that this cooler will somehow cope with the cooling of the chiplet processor, so we tested it with the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X processor. Thermal paste distribution after these tests on the processor:

In this case, the thermal paste layer is also very thin over most of the processor cover.

The heatsink is a stack of aluminum fins tightly fitted onto the heatpipes.

The heatpipes are staggered, which should improve the efficiency of the cooler. A decorative cover made of black plastic with a matte surface is fixed on top of the radiator.

The width of the fan is slightly less than the working plane of the radiator, and the height of the radiator is approximately equal to the height of the fan, so the entire airflow passes through the fins.

Standard size of complete fans 120 mm. Frame height 25 mm. The impeller blades have a special geometry, the manufacturer calls them double. Vibration-isolating pads made of rubber of medium hardness are glued into the eyes in the corners of the fan frame. In the uncompressed state, the pads protrude by about 0.5 mm relative to the dimensions of the frame. As conceived by the developers, this should provide vibration decoupling of the fan from the attachment point. However, if we estimate the ratio of the fan mass to the stiffness of the linings, it becomes clear that the resonant frequency of the structure is very high, that is, there can be practically no effective vibration decoupling. In addition, the mounting brackets are fixed directly to the fan frame and to the radiator fins, which leaves no chance for at least some vibration decoupling. The marking on the fan allows you to determine that the model DF1202512CL is used.

We did not disassemble the fan (it is impossible to do this without damaging the fan), we believed the manufacturer that it had a hydraulic bearing (Hydro Bearing). The fan supports PWM regulation. The cables from the fan are encased in a braided sheath of slippery plastic. According to the legend, the sheath reduces aerodynamic drag, but taking into account the thickness of the flat four-wire cable inside this sheath and its outer diameter, we strongly doubt the veracity of this legend. However, the shell will allow you to maintain a single style of interior decoration of the case.

The cooler is relatively compact. All RAM slots remain available for installing memory modules. Illustrative example:

For a full description of the testing methodology, see the corresponding article «Testing Methods for 2020 CPU Coolers». Since this cooler is not compatible with LGA2011 / LGA2066 sockets, testing was performed using AMD processors with socket AM4, namely AMD Ryzen 7 1800X and AMD Ryzen 93950X. The powerMax (AVX) program was used for the load test. All cores of the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processor ran at a fixed frequency of 3.625 GHz (36.25 multiplier). In this case, the CPU consumption, as measured by the 12V auxiliary connector, ranged from 147W at 62 °C CPU temperature to 161W at 87°C. All cores of the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X processor ran at a fixed frequency of 3.6 GHz (multiplier of 36). The consumption of this processor, when measured on two additional 12V sockets on the motherboard under load, varied from 150 W at 66 °C processor temperature to 174 W at 104 °C.

Determining the dependence of the cooler fan speed on the duty cycle of the PWM and/or supply voltage

A good result is a smooth increase in the rotation speed when the duty cycle (SC) changes from 30% to 100% and a fairly wide adjustment range. Note that at a short circuit of 0%, the fan does not stop, therefore, in a hybrid cooling system with a passive mode at minimum load, such fans will have to be stopped by reducing the supply voltage.

The voltage adjustment range is noticeably narrower. The fan stops when the voltage drops to 4.1 V and starts from 4.3 V. Apparently, it is better not to connect the fan to a 5 V source. ) cooler

In this test, our AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processor does not overheat even at the minimum fan speed achieved with PWM control. You can even further reduce the voltage to 10 V (which will give approximately 380 rpm), but when the voltage drops to 8 V, the system is already shutting down due to overheating.

Determining the noise level depending on the rotational speed of the cooler fan(s) systems, from 35 to 40 dBA, the noise level belongs to the category of tolerant, below 35 dBA, the noise from the cooling system will not stand out much against the background of typical quiet PC components — case fans, on the power supply, on the video card, as well as hard drives, and somewhere then below 25 dBA the cooler can be called conditionally silent. The background level was equal to 17.4 dBA (conditional value, which shows the sound level meter). Cooler Deepcool Gammaxx 400 EX can be considered a relatively quiet device. True, at the highest speeds, a chirring is heard from the exhaust fan, which occurs due to the fact that the fan blades rotate very close to the radiator fins, but with a slight decrease in the rotation speed, the chirring disappears.

Let’s try to get away from the test bench conditions to more realistic scenarios. Let’s say that the temperature of the air taken in by the cooler fan can rise to 44 °C, but we don’t want to raise the temperature of the processor under maximum load above 80°C. Restricting ourselves to these conditions, we construct the dependence of the real maximum power (denoted as Max. TDP ) consumed by the processor, on the noise level:

Taking 25 dBA as a criterion for conditional noiselessness, we get the approximate maximum power of AMD Ryzen 7 1800X processors corresponding to this level, which is about 125 W. Hypothetically, if you do not pay attention to the noise level, the power limits can be increased to somewhere up to 135 watts. Among the already tested efficiency of this cooler is not a record. For example, in the case of the Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4, equipped with a similarly sized heatsink, but with five heat pipes, but only one fan, the above-described limit of silent operation is approximately 145 watts.

Testing on an AMD Ryzen 9 3950X processor

As an additional test, we decided to see how the cooler handles the cooling of the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X. The processors of the Ryzen 9 family are assemblies of three crystals under one cover. On the one hand, increasing the area from which heat is removed can improve the cooling capacity of the cooler, but on the other hand, the design of most coolers is optimized for better cooling of the central region of the processor. Apparently, because of these features, there is an opinion that it is not very easy to choose an air cooler for the top new generation Ryzen processors.

Restricting ourselves to the above conditions, we plot the dependence of the real maximum power (denoted as Max. TDP) consumed by the processor on the noise level:

Taking 25 dBA as a conditional noiselessness criterion, we get that the maximum processor power corresponding to this level is about 116 W. If you do not pay attention to the noise level, then the power limit can be increased somewhere up to 128 watts. Once again, we will clarify: this is in harsh conditions of blowing the radiator with air heated to 44 degrees. As the air temperature drops, the specified power limits for quiet operation and maximum power increase. Therefore, subject to sufficiently good ventilation in the case, this cooler will somehow cope with the cooling of the AMD Ryzen 9 processor. 3950X, but you should not count on the possibility of significant overclocking.

Conclusions

Our testing has shown that the Deepcool Gammaxx 400 EX cooler can be used with processors like AMD Ryzen 7 1800X, which have a real consumption of about 125 W, while even taking into account the possible increase in temperature inside the case to 44 °C, it will remain very low noise level — 25 dBA and below. In the case of the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X chiplet processor, the cooler efficiency is noticeably lower, and in order to comply with the above conditions, the maximum power consumed by the processor must not exceed 116 watts. With lower cooling air temperatures and/or less stringent noise requirements, the power limits can be significantly increased. The advantages of the cooler include a neat design, easy installation and the fact that it does not block the slots for memory modules.

Thermalright AXP-200R cooler overview

The AXP-200R is the top of the line horizontal coolers from Thermalright. This device has been on the market for almost 10 years, the observed variation is a tribute (and the fruit of cooperation) of the ROG (Republic Of Gamers) series from ASUS (this is evidenced by the red fan TY-14013R). The AXP-200R cooling system, designed for low-profile computers, is one of the most productive in the brand’s assortment, but the developer’s website does not indicate the maximum TDP that it can handle. By experience, we managed to find out that the 125 W CPU Core i7-11700K for this solution is not a serious problem.

The TY-14013R propeller operates silently at speeds up to 850 rpm.

The basis of the Thermalright AXP-200R cooler is six heatpipes and an overall heatsink with a flat base, completely covered with nickel. The CO is compatible not only with Mini-ITX motherboards, but also with ATX, Enhanced ATX, and mATX variants.

We remind you once again that the first modification of the Thermalright AXP-200 cooler was released in 2013, which is why it uses a tricky (albeit extremely reliable) mounting system. Will have dig deeper with screws without springs, removable pressure frame, small plastic clips, etc.

Experience and ingenuity will definitely come in handy, because even the fan is fixed with four metal screws.

The developer claims that the user will not encounter any difficulties with installing the Thermalright AXP-200R cooler on any of the existing ATX and mATX system bases, however, there are nuances.

The fact is that the CO mounting frame provides four options for the location of the Thermalright AXP-200R on the motherboard: heat pipes to the rear interface panel, to the RAM slots, to the video card, or to the connectors (one or two) that feed the CPU.

But on the ASUS ROG Maximus XII Hero (Wi-Fi) test board, the Thermalright AXP-200R cooler was installed in the only possible position (look at the photos). Fortunately, we did not have the highest RAM modules at our disposal. If the combs on the bars were larger, it would hardly have been possible to fix this CO on the Socket LGA 1200.
