Is there a difference? How about performance?

View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_confused. gif

I’m pretty sure there are only <-ATA33 and ATA66/100 . The first are usually just referred to as IDE cables, the second as either ATA66 or ATA100. The ATA33/IDE cables are almost always Light Gray (off white) and have slightly thicker wiring. The ATA66/100 cables are almost always Dark Gray and have very fine looking wiring. Both have 40 pin connectors, but they function differently.
ATA33 cables are adequate for ATA33 drives. ATA66/100 cables are fine for all drives, expcept maybe the ATA133 drives now out. Performance also depends on if you have the right controller to handle the drives, but using the ATA33 cable on an ATA100 drive with a ATA100 controller limits your drive to ATA33. I just use ATA66/100 for all my drives, when I have the cables handy.
Hope that’s clear.
kwikit
Edited in more info.

Just count the individual wires. The ATA33 cables have 40 wires, while the ATA66/100 has 80 thinner wires.

Alright, I’ve got a couple of each here so I’m sure I’ve got at least 66’s going into my drives. I’ve got a 33 here to compare it to. I’m golden.

Thanks guys.

While we’re on the subject. .. what do ATA133 cables look like? I have two maxtor drives that are ata133 but also perform at 100 if your bus doesn’t support 133.
Is there a difference in cable? Or does ATA133 use the same 80 wire ATA100 cables?

Or does ATA133 use the same 80 wire ATA100 cables?

There is no such thing as an ATA 133 cable. Currently there are only ATA 33 (40 conductor) and 80 conductor (or, if you fancy, ata66/100/133) cables. ATA 66/100/133 drives require 80 wire conductors, because extra grounding wires are needed to reduce noise/interference with higher speed signals.
Naming cables as being specific to ATA 66, 100, or 133 is misleading. I guess from a marketing point of view when ATA 66 drives first came out, it made better sense to refer to the cables as ata66 or ATA 33 (rather than by the number of wires) to distinguish them. However, now that ATA 100 and ATA 133 (to a limited extent) drives are available, this naming convention just presents unnecessary confusion.

Freonchill is correct. There are ATA 33 and All the rest. ATA 66/100/133 cables are the same, 80 wire as opposed to 40 wire for the ATA 33 variety.
Dennis View image: /infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

The 80 wire cable also generally allow to use cable select, where as the 40 wires cable usually don’t.
Of course cable select is nigh useless.
Cable select sets a drive to master or slave by the connector it’s plugged into on the cable, instead of setting jumpers on the drive.
But I haven’t seem any drives shipped with the jumpers set to cable select, so you’d have to set jumpers to use cable select anyway.

Cable select simplifies the assembly process for them. For retail drives, you’re right, it’s not set to Cable Select by default.
