Two-thirds of summer is behind us. Someone else is just planning to soak up the sun, anticipating the delights of relaxation during the velvet season, and someone has already returned from vacation, gradually getting back to work, choosing the configuration for the new gaming system along the way.

The Pentium G2030 processor (3 GHz) recommended for an entry-level gaming system has dropped in price by $5, from $68 to $63. This is probably a pre-emptive reaction to the upcoming announcement of low-cost processors Intel Haswell . However, when we mention entry-level chips here, we mean only models of the Pentium series. CPUs of the even more affordable Celeron line will switch to the 4th generation Intel Core architecture a little later. Buy now or wait for budget boards and processors for LGA1150? You should not expect a fundamental difference between the platforms in this segment. If you are already ripe for buying now, then you should not postpone. It is possible to pick up the necessary components, having managed to finish with the creation of the system just in time for the start of the new gaming season.

If you planned to assemble a gaming PC for the second half of autumn, then it is likely that you will be able to get a Haswell system for the same money. We will not talk about potential opportunities for a subsequent upgrade of the system. Hypothetically, the LGA1150 will remain relevant for longer, but in practice, when the time for a total upgrade really comes up, it is often impossible to do without replacing the motherboard and processor. Therefore, we recommend initially choosing a platform that satisfies the basic needs now, without worrying too much about buying for growth. Rest assured, iron manufacturers will do everything possible to ensure that by the time you need a more powerful solution, the existing components are hopelessly outdated both morally and functionally. Nothing personal just business.

The situation with the AMD platform for the base gaming system is even more ambiguous. The positions of AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE processors suddenly shook. CPU data reserves are finite, and given that they have not been replenished for quite a long time by the manufacturer, and, accordingly, by distributors, these chips have somehow suddenly run out. A month ago, the number of proposals in hotline for this position did not portend any danger, but now there are leftovers far from all positions. There are practically no really commercially available relatively inexpensive quad-core processors for Socket AM3 on the market, and rolling back to tri-core Athlon II X3 no longer makes sense. You will have to choose either the Socket FM2 platform with the Athlon X4 750K processor, which lacks an integrated graphics core and therefore does not require an overpayment for unused functionality, or look towards processors for Socket AM3+. In the latter case, the base model is the $90 quad-core AMD FX-4100 (3.6/3.8 GHz, 8 MB L3) or the newer FX-4300 (3. 8/4 GHz, 4 MB L3) with Piledriver architecture for $100. In the meantime, there are remnants of Phenom II X4 , we recommend looking in the direction of these chips, but with a high probability next month we will be forced to look for a replacement for the well-deserved veteran and not at all because of his professional inconsistency.

More recently, the Athlon II X4 760K has been announced, which uses the Richland core. It has not yet appeared on our sale, but there is not much point in waiting yet. Given that the GPU is disabled here, there are no fundamental differences from the Trinity processors. If we talk about new products for Socket FM2, it is worth mentioning the appearance of another model — Athlon X2 370K . The 4/4.2 GHz dual-core Richland model is already on our market for $55. The index «K» in the name of the model indicates an unlocked multiplier, which allows you to painlessly increase the clock frequency. The CPU is curious in itself, but it is of no practical interest in terms of the gaming platform.

What we gladly approved for our base gaming system is the Radeon HD 7790 . Moreover, such a video card with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory on board will cost $130 instead of $135-140, which were asked for these adapters a month ago. The choice of versions with 2 GB of memory in this case is very limited, besides, the price of $150-170 seems prohibitive for a device of this level, especially considering that GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost .

Prices for RAM in anticipation of the start of the active season went up again. The DDR3-1333 4 GB module is already available for an average of $32 instead of $30 a month earlier. Despite the fact that for the equipment of an optimal gaming system we are more impressed with Core i5-3470 , and accordingly the LGA1155 platform, we cannot help but note the curious situation with motherboards based on 9 chipsets0003 Intel H87/B85 designed for Haswell chips. An unexpected opportunity, which has already been dubbed as “ Non-Z OC ”, was first announced by ASRock specialists, after which other manufacturers happily picked up the baton, one by one announcing the readiness of UEFI versions in which it became possible to check the potential with a flick of the wrist processor with an unlocked multiplier.

Obviously, Intel is not happy with the situation with the unexpectedly opened possibilities of chipsets. Z87 chips are by definition more expensive than H87/B85 chips, and when one of the most significant advantages becomes available for the lower chipsets in the line, then in the long term, such a turn of events promises only lost profits for the manufacturer. Surely Intel is using all the leverage available to it to correct this «misunderstanding». The current situation is an illustrative example of how, with the help of marketing tricks, and not technical capabilities, essentially identical products are bred into different price and functional niches.

Assembling a peppy gaming configuration, you should pay more attention to the choice of video card. GeForce GTX 660 The is the starting point for an optimal gaming system, below which you definitely shouldn’t fall in this category. If it is possible to buy a faster adapter, then here it will be quite appropriate. The closest neighbors in the rankings among NVIDIA solutions are GeForce GTX 660 Ti and GeForce GTX 760 . The first option is worth considering if you are offered a good discount in the hope of clearing your price list for new solutions as soon as possible. The GeForce GTX 760 actually succeeded the GTX 660 Ti, offering a very attractive price/performance ratio. After the announcement of the newcomer, the GTX 660 Ti also fell in price, but now they are offered at about the same price as the GTX 760, on average yielding to the latter in performance by 5-10%. Fortunately, we quickly passed the stage of saturation with new video cards. Sky-high price tags ($350-450), set by unceremonious sellers and deservedly caused a wave of indignation among many users, by the beginning of August dropped to much more adequate values. A modification of the GeForce GTX 760 with 2 GB of memory is already quite possible to choose, having an amount of $ 260-280. If you manage to add the missing amount to the $200 allocated for the purchase of the GTX 660 without creating a serious gap in the family budget, you can count on an increase in fps of 20-25%.

Another option to spend the indicated amount, in excess of the minimum allotted budget, is to purchase SSD . A solid state drive will not add the amount of fps, but it will raise the level of comfort while working with the system to a qualitatively different level. Once you have tried an SSD in operation, it is absolutely impossible to refuse such a blessing in the future. A 64 GB drive will cost about $70, while 120/128 GB models cost about $100 now.

Returning to the graphics theme, we note that video cards with AMD chips, having recently improved their price/performance ratio, are already able to compete well with NVIDIA’s offers. 9The 0003 Radeon HD 7870 at $210-230 looks like a great alternative to the GeForce GTX 660, while the Radeon HD 7950 , which has finally returned to its previous price (~$280), will be very competitive against the backdrop of the GeForce GTX 760. Especially considering 3 GB of memory and phenomenal overclocking potential.
