      AMD Athlon X4 880K Review & Gaming Benchmarks vs.

      Intel i3, AMD APUs | GamersNexus

      The AMD Athlon X4 880K is the CPU we’ve been waiting for. Since the A10-7870K and A10-7860K APU reviews, our conclusions have generally been pointing in this direction. For the dGPU-using gaming audience, it makes better sense for budget buyers to grab a cheap CPU and dGPU than to buy an APU alone. There is a place for the APUs – ultra-budget, tiny, quiet HTPCs capable of video streaming and moderate gaming – but for more “core” gaming, the CPU + dGPU move currently does yield major gains. Even just throwing a 250X at an APU has, in some of our tests, nearly doubled gaming performance. For such a dirt-cheap video card, that’s a big gain to be had.

      And so AMD’s Athlon X4 880K enters the scene. The price is all over the map right now. MSRP is $95 from AMD, but the X4 880K isn’t (as of this writing) available through major first-party retailers like Amazon and Newegg. We’ve seen it for $104 from third-party Newegg sellers, but as low as $90 from sites we’ve never heard of, if you count those. In theory, though, the X4 880K will eventually come to rest at $95.

      The new CPU is effectively a step between the 7870K and 7890K, but with the IGP disabled. This lowers validation cost while offering effectively equivalent CPU performance. AMD’s X4 880K operates on a two-module, four-core Excavator architecture with a stock clock-rate of 4.0 to 4.2GHz (boosted). For comparison, the A10-7890K runs 4.1 to 4.3GHz, so there’s a 100MHz gain over the X4 880K. Easily negated with overclocking, as the 880K is a K-SKU, multiplier-unlocked chip. The 880K has a 95W TDP and is paired with AMD’s 125W near-silent (NS) cooler.

      This review and benchmark of the Athlon X4 880K tests thermals, gaming (FPS) performance, and compares against higher-end i3 & i5 CPUs, APUs, and the old X4 760K.

      There’s really no point to buy the Athlon X4 870K, at this point. The CPU shipped silently, saw almost no media coverage, and is now an odd-man-out for ~$90. It’s a few bucks cheaper than MSRP of the 880K, which we imagine will soon completely phase-out the 870K.

      The 860K is still a product worth looking at, though. It’s $70 to $80 (more with the NS cooler) and on identical architecture to the 880K, but the 880K operates at a 300MHz higher base frequency. This is where some games will show a performance delta. We don’t have an 860K for the bench (but hope to buy one out-of-pocket for testing), but do have an older X4 760K we ran through some games.

      Other than this frequency difference, the only other major change is the cooler. The 860K ships with either the 95W cooler or the 125W cooler (the latter being the same as the 880K’s), but for $10 more.

      Test Methodology

      We tested using our updated GPU test benches, detailed in the tables below. Our thanks to supporting hardware vendors for supplying some of the test components.

      The latest AMD drivers (16.2 hotfix) were used for testing with the 250X. NVidia’s 364.72 drivers were used for testing. Game settings were manually controlled for the DUT.

      Testing was split between CPU bottleneck analysis and IGP benchmarks. To test at what point the CPU bottlenecks a high-end GPU, we equipped all platforms with a GTX 980 Ti and performed tests using the following settings:

      • Metro: Last Light — Very High w/ high tessellation.

      • GRID: Autosport — Ultra, 4xMSAA.

      • Shadow of Mordor — Ultra preset.

      • GTA V — Very High / High.

      • Witcher 3 – Ultra with no HairWorks and no AA.

      • DiRT Rally – Ultra, 4xMSAA.

      All tests had the resolution set to 1080p.

      Each game was tested for 30 seconds in an identical scenario, then repeated three times for parity.

      Average FPS, 1% low, and 0.1% low times are measured. We do not measure maximum or minimum FPS results as we consider these numbers to be pure outliers. Instead, we take an average of the lowest 1% of results (1% low) to show real-world, noticeable dips; we then take an average of the lowest 0.1% of results for severe spikes. Anti-Aliasing was disabled in all tests except GRID: Autosport at Ultra (not medium), which looks significantly better with its default 4xMSAA.

      Note that previous tests were reconducted to account for driver updates or changes to game software. We saw some improvements in a few cases, but generally the same results were output (the nature of using established games). Some changes in low values may be present due to modifications made in our methodology since the previous APU review, which was quite some time ago.

      AMD Athlon X4 880K vs. 7870K, i3-6300, i5-6600K – GTA V

      The X4 880K performs about identically to the 7890K in GTA V benchmarking – no surprise here. As will emerge to be a trend, the $50 more expensive i3-6300 holds a remarkable lead (~42.5%) over the X4 880K. Again, the $50 price gap is worth emphasis – but the 880K clearly bottlenecks the GPU at ~63FPS.

      The 1% low and 0.1% low metrics yield nearly a consistent 60FPS low-end for the i3 CPU, which can’t be said for the AMD devices. The X4 880K has some inconsistencies in framerate performance that loosen its average and low-end metrics, shown by the 32FPS and 39FPS averaged lows.

      AMD Athlon X4 880K vs. 7870K, i3-6300, i5-6600K – Witcher 3

      The Witcher 3 is abusive enough that the performance gaps shrink noticeably. The Athlon X4 880K sits shy of 60FPS with the 7890K (indistinguishable difference between them). There is a performance difference of roughly 28% between the i3-6300 and 880K. So far, then, an extra $50 yields somewhere between 28% and ~40% more performance, depending on title.

      AMD Athlon X4 880K vs. 7870K, i3-6300, i5-6600K – GRID

      GRID: Autosport is one of the most sensitive games we have when it comes to CPU frequency and thread-count changes. Without moving into the i7 range, the most powerful CPU on this bench pushes 130FPS average in the form of the 6600K ($245). The 6300 sees a reduction of 15.8%, but is still above 100FPS at 1080p. Then we hit a giant wall, and the AMD chips re-emerge in the 60FPS range. The X4 760K sits at 59FPS, and is championed by the 880K with a 9.6% delta. Massive bottleneck, but if you’re looking to get a sub-$100 CPU and cheap dGPU – like a 750 Ti or R7 370, then the pairing makes sense for the price.

      AMD Athlon X4 880K vs. 7870K, i3-6300, i5-6600K – DiRT

      DiRT: Rally, like GRID, is a CPU-sensitive game. The Athlon X4 880K runs just under the 100MHz faster 7890K, and just above the 3.6GHz 7860K. A massive lead is held by the i3-6300 and, judging from the i5-6600K’s performance, it looks like we start hitting other bottlenecks (GPU) in the 120+ FPS range.

      AMD Athlon X4 880K vs. 7870K, i3-6300, i5-6600K – Metro: Last Light

      Note that Metro: Last Light is uniquely picky about threads and will present poor 0.1% low metrics for just about every CPU except those with 8 available threads, like the i7 series CPUs.

      At 1080p, the Athlon X4 880K predictably performs equally to the A10-7870K, being a simplified version of the $135 7870K APU. There’s a clear CPU bottleneck established when we look to the i5-6600K as a control, which pushes nearly 96 FPS average. The i3-6300, priced at $150, eats into the performance with a 14.5% performance difference against the 6600K. The Athlon X4 880K suffers a 44% performance difference when matched against the i3-6300, though the Intel CPU is $50 higher, to be fair. It doesn’t make any sense to opt for an IGP considering these first tests couple a dGPU with the CPUs, and the APUs see equal CPU performance. There is no noteworthy gain over the 760K in this benchmark, though that changes in a few other tests.

      AMD Athlon X4 880K vs. 7870K, i3-6300, i5-6600K – Mordor

      Shadow of Mordor is one of those. The old X4 760K performs at 74FPS average, a 13.8% difference from the new X4 880K. The APUs fall in between these Athlon chips, the 7870K again being effectively tied. No reason to buy that if buying a dGPU. The AMD devices are bottlenecking when compared to the i3-6300 ($150), a 31.7% difference between them, but still exceed 60FPS and are reasonable gaming chips for the price.

      AMD Athlon X4 880K Overclocking Benchmarks

      Overclocking efforts stopped at 4.6GHz, at which point we were unable to achieve a stable and reliable clock even with additional vCore or other UEFI tuning. The overclock isn’t too impressive, but reasonable – and it was stable at 4.6GHz with no issues, always a positive. This isn’t the kind of chip you buy for extreme overclocking endeavors; it’s got a little extra power hidden under the hood, but it’s no 5GHz hitter.

      Performance deltas were generally ~5% to 10%, but some games (DiRT) saw larger gains.

      AMD Athlon X4 880K Thermals

      The AMD APU products are tough to get an accurate reading from. Most of the usual tools don’t work, and the per-core readings are often inaccurate. Our current thermal bench for AMD CPUs is limited, but growing with each review. The X4 880K with its stock heatsink runs cooler than both the 7870K and 7860K when each is paired with their stock coolers. It’s a surprisingly cool chip, aided by the fact that a large portion of the die – the IGP component of the APU – is disabled from use.

      AMD’s Athlon X4 880K uses what AMD calls its 125W Near-Silent cooler, the same as is found stock with the 7870K and 7860K. The Wraith is only found with the A10-7890K and some of the FX-8370 chips.

      AMD Athlon X4 880K Conclusion

      Until first-party retailers start listing the 880K, its pricing will remain sort of all over the place. The $95 MSRP makes the chip more viable than the $105 listings right now; even though it’s only $10, that’s $10 further from an 860K and $10 closer to an i3 – which performs markedly better. The nature of the 880K is to fill a small market gap, but one which is important – the sub-$100 CPU that’s best paired with an affordable dGPU for budget gaming rigs.

      The 880K makes infinitely more sense than an APU purchase for our core audience – if you’re buying a dGPU, that IGP goes unused. The 880K cuts the price considerably by axing its IGP, but its CPU performance remains on-par with the 7870K and 7890K APU chips.

      AMD has improved tremendously with its cooling solutions. This is one place where AMD has thoroughly beaten Intel, whose stock thermal solution leaves much to be desired. The stock 125W NS cooler for the 880K is sufficient for most users – even those playing with entry-level overclocking – and further keeps costs under control by negating the need to purchase a standalone cooler.

      Thermal performance is good. Gaming performance is mostly acceptable – generally the CPU bottlenecks GPUs around 60FPS in more abusive games. It’s tough to say what the staying power will be. Overclocking is generally unexcited, but is easily done for entry-level users seeking to play with clock and vCore changes.

      UPDATE: After posting this review, a third-party seller on Newegg listed the X4 880K for $93. This makes the 880K an easy buy in the sub-$100 price range. It is well worth the extra $13 over the average 860K price, and far enough away from an i3 CPU that there are budget builds which would make better use of the 880K.

        level, and secondly (and most importantly), they used not the «real» Athlon X4, but the A10, turning off its graphics core. In principle, AMD does the same when releasing such processors, but given that we measure power consumption, it is interesting to clarify the correctness of this approach. Moreover, the 860K model (which is just obtained from the A10-7850K with a blocked GPU) is already quite old and not very interesting in itself. The recent novelties, however, do not fundamentally differ from it, but they can offer the buyer slightly different clock frequencies and even an improved microarchitecture, which in the near future will be used more actively as part of the company’s updated platform.

      So, we have two new processors-ATHLON X4 845 and 880K. With the second, everything is simple — this is just the already mentioned phased transition from Kaveri to Godavari, but not in the «APU» segment, but for still existing fans of discrete video cards. It is also interesting in that it has no direct analogue in the integrated line: the processor part of the A10-7870K is somewhat slower, while the A10-789 has0K it is slightly faster, although the difference in clock speeds between these models can not be called tangible. As part of the new trends, it comes with a quiet cooler capable of dissipating not the standard 95 W of heat for the model, but all 125 W, which directly provokes (along with unlocked multipliers) attempts to increase the clock frequency a little more. But in general, this is still the same Athlon X4 that we are all used to.

      Model 845 is more interesting because it is based on the Carrizo core, previously used only in the company’s mobile solutions. Its positive feature should be considered the use of the updated Excavator microarchitecture, i.e. according to this indicator, the processor outperforms FX for AM3 +, for example, already by two steps. But since the company tried to develop a compact and low-power (at least in its own understanding) processor for laptops, there are only two modules in Carrizo, and even their entire environment was “cut”: in particular, the capacity of the second-level cache memory was halved in these processors ( as compensation, L1 has doubled) and the number of PCIe lanes has been “halved”. This is comparable even with other Athlon X4 — AMD did not release a high-performance processor (like the older FX) on this microarchitecture. And this is not planned further, but APUs for the AM4 platform, which should appear on the market in the near future, using the same microarchitecture, may not be so limited. And they will probably work at higher clock frequencies — in this regard, the 845 throws us back almost at the time of the first Athlon X4 still based on Trinity. In addition, the AM4 platform is focused on the use of DDR4 memory, which also affects performance and power consumption. Therefore, it is not worth drawing conclusions about future processors based on this model, but it will be useful to see what its appearance gives especially economical users.

      and there is no time for the processor. Formally, many still consider the Core i3 line to be analogues of Athlon X4, however, as we have already seen, this is true only for old Core i3, even for LGA1155, and comparison with the new ones is pointless. In the new Intel families, the Pentium has already «grown up» so much that it can easily compete with solutions for FM2+. That’s why today we took such a pair, strange at first glance, as reference points for comparison, since the “relationships” within it are also interesting in themselves (especially considering that both processors operate at the same frequency).

      As for other test conditions, all participants were equipped with 16 GB of DDR3 or DDR4 memory (depending on the platform) with the maximum officially supported frequency, and as a video card (fortunately, there was no integrated graphics in Athlon X4) Radeon R9 was used 380 with 4 GB of memory.

      Test methodology

      The methodology is described in detail in a separate article. Here we briefly recall that it is based on the following four pillars:

      And detailed results of all tests are available in the form of a full table with results ( in Microsoft Excel 97-2003 format). Directly in the articles, we use already processed data. In particular, this applies to application tests, where everything is normalized relative to the reference system (as last year, a laptop based on Core i5-3317U with 4 GB of memory and a 128 GB SSD) and grouped by the areas of application of the computer.

      iXBT Application Benchmark 2016

      It is noteworthy that the old Core i3 can lag behind the Pentium, but the new ones — despite the lack of support for Hyper-Threading technology (relevant in these applications), but thanks to the new microarchitecture and higher clock frequencies. Athlon X4 looks even better in such conditions, but the most interesting thing is not this, but the fact that the 845 managed to overtake the 860K despite all the “cuts”. That is, AMD’s new microarchitecture is better than the old one in itself. Unfortunately, its specific implementation is too limited, so this effect can be neutralized by simple «brute force», which 880K demonstrated to us. However, only «on average» — in terms of tests, even it lags behind 845! If the new «modular» processors (it looks like the last ones in the company’s assortment) are less «mutilated» by the manufacturer, it will be even better.

      No matter how slow Photoshop runs on the Pentium, it makes up for it in other programs of the group, so that, in general, everything turns out to be very close to each other. Interestingly, the 845 lagged behind the 860K in two out of four programs, but in Photoshop and Capture One Pro, it even managed to bypass 880K, which once again proves that the new microarchitecture has a good potential. Hardly enough, however, for high results in the top segment (why is it not planned to use it there — Zen will be right away), but some kind of revival in the camp of budget processors is quite possible.

      But the old code belongs to the optimizations of modern architectures in general… not at all. The modern Pentium, however, is good, but largely due to the fact that Intel has ceased to strongly «clamp» the clock frequency to this family. AMD processors, on the other hand, are still not even rivals of Sandy Bridge in terms of single-threaded performance, and the 845 generally behaves disgustingly in such conditions.

      The application also does not require a large number of computational threads, but is more up-to-date not only by the version number. What immediately affects — Athlon X4 845 turns out to be the fastest Athlon X4 in general. Which is not enough for competition even with old Intel processors, but in terms of intraspecific competition it is interesting.

      Algorithms have not changed for a long time, so the only interesting thing here is 880K, which turned out to be the fastest among the five subjects. Well — sometimes Athlon X4 look good. The main thing is to choose the right competitors 🙂 On the other hand, their prices are just comparable with Pentium, so… More often it would be like that.

      Better yet, like this. We don’t like, perhaps, the low results of 845, but there is nothing surprising in them: the «halved» L2 should have an effect exactly like that. But «full-fledged» models, even based on an older microarchitecture, are not bad. And let the Core i3 be better (even the old ones) — they are more expensive. But the Pentium is far behind.

      Despite the fact that the platforms are different, with file operations everything is at about the same level. What is not surprising — generally speaking, for a long time few people have noticed the difference in this segment. Here different drives affect instantly and without tests, but if you use a fast SSD, enough for everyone.

      As we have already said, taking into account the «bad attitude» to any SMT technologies, the test degenerates into checking the quantity and quality of «real» cores. With the number, everything is simple — all the subjects have two (and it doesn’t matter — they are called cores or “modules”). The quality also needs no comment.

      As you can see, AMD processors for the FM2+ platform are quite comparable to the old Core i3 for LGA1155 in terms of performance, which is no longer enough to compete with modern budget Intel processors — they have gone too far ahead in five years, changing not only architecturally, but also increasing frequencies. We did not observe either one or the other in the performance of AMD. However, there are architectural changes, but sometimes they are noticeable, sometimes not so much, so it’s not surprising that the 845 has just such an index — this is one of the youngest and slowest solutions in the Athlon X4 line. What, of course, is not the fault of the processor itself, but those who1015 blinded from what was (c) 🙂 Therefore, there is some hope that models for AM4 on the same architecture will be more interesting. But so far they are not.

      Energy consumption and energy efficiency

      High maximum power consumption, we recall, is observed in the test, which noticeably loads the video card with work, and is associated with its «appetite». However, the last one in this line is the same for all the subjects, so it can be considered an inevitable, but the same evil 🙂 And adjusted for this «evil», it is clear that the energy consumption of processors for FM2 + significantly exceeds even what the «oldies» Sandy needed Bridge, despite using the latest rougher standards for production. However, we knew this before, but the fact that the 845 turned out to be no better than the other two processors in the line is not the most pleasant discovery: after all, there were hopes for some kind of economy. Moreover, the TDP in his case is only 65 W, not 95 W, like in 860K and 880K (and in general — all «overclockable» Athlon X4). Most likely, processors for AM4 won’t get much better either, but we can expect certain improvements, at least due to the use of DDR4, which (as we have already seen) has lower power consumption.

      As for the results of Athlon X4 880K, they shocked us a little. Yes, of course, this is not the first processor of the Godavari family, so we are already accustomed to their “appetite” somewhat higher than that of Kaveri — apparently, there is another way to increase clock frequencies (which have stood still for more than a year) from the company not now. But not to the same extent! Even the processor itself (and not the platform as a whole) sometimes jumps beyond 100 W, despite the formal compliance with the TDP level of 95 W. Actually, in the end, there is nothing surprising that it comes with a cooler capable of dissipating all 125 W — even in normal mode, this is not superfluous, but if you also overclock …

      At the same time, the performance of all three models, as we saw above, extremely close. And it is comparable to the Intel processors taken for comparison, even the worst of which is much more economical than solutions for FM2+. With a corresponding unpleasant result.

      iXBT Game Benchmark 2016

      One fast stream is enough for a game, so modern high-frequency Pentiums are practically out of competition. However, the rest are also quite enough to play comfortably, without thinking too much about anything. Even Athlon X4 845.

      The layout has not actually changed, although here it is completely and completely, as we see, determined by the processor. But, in general, a couple of fast cores are almost enough to get maximum performance, and any of the subjects is just for a comfortable game.

      With this video card in this game, everything is also determined by the processor, and it simply «does not like» dual-threaded models. However, the 845 still lags behind even the Pentium, but the 860K and 880K overtake not only it, but also the Core i3 (albeit an old one).

      It would seem that the engines of the EGO line have always “loved” multithreading, and their hardware requirements grew from version to version, but… Unlike the previous game, the Pentium G4400 turned out to be the fastest here again. However, compared to the «older» Core i3, all Athlons are also not bad, because they allow you to get a similar level of performance, but are now sold for a much lower price (modern Core i3s have become even faster, but have not fallen in price).

      Almost everything «rests» on the video card, which in this game, again, is enough for all the test subjects. Even 845, which is not amazing — anyway, as we can see, the difference between the processors begins to appear only at a frame rate above 40, which is possible either when the resolution is reduced, or when the picture quality is reduced, or when replacing a video card with a more powerful and expensive one. While R9The 380 costs three to four times more than the junior Pentium or Athlon X4 — the conclusion is obvious.

      As well as in the case of this game, where both in high and low resolutions everything is determined by the video card — even the more expensive and faster Core i3-6320, as we already know, is unable to significantly improve the results.

      Finest hour of Athlon X4, which in this game outperform competitors from the camp of Intel. But then again — if the video card is capable of providing at least 40 frames per second. If we try to meet this requirement in «full» resolution, we’ll come to adapters priced at a heel of budget processors, so the questions of choosing between them (or even expanding the considered range to «not quite budget» ones) degenerate into theoretical ones.

      Unlike the previous game, this one unequivocally votes for Intel processors, and Pentium is not the ultimate dream for it: older modern Core i3s allow you to get more than 50 FPS. But in general, in practice, everything can be considered usable.

      In Tomb Raider (which is not a secret for a long time), everything is determined by the video card, so, by and large, the main thing that is required from the processor by games of this plan is to cost as cheaply as possible: then it will be possible to «shove» better videos into a fixed budget: ) Just a very good potential market niche for Athlon X4.

      Processors slightly differ when lowering the resolution, but in practice this only prevents you from getting all the «potential performance», but you can play anyway.

      Another «purely video card» game with a natural result — a more powerful video would be useful, and a more powerful processor is not too necessary for him. Especially for cards of the Radeon R9 380 level.

      Despite the multi-threading of the UE3 engine, as usual, maximum single-threaded performance is paramount — apparently, all «side activities» are able to «accommodate» all together in one more thread, without interfering with the main one. But from a practical point of view (that is, to just play), the performance is enough with a margin even in the worst case, which traditionally turned out to be the Athlon X4 845.

      And here everyone performs more “smoothly”, although the dependencies are the same. In general, everything is as usual — the easier the game (and the mode), the more «processor-dependent» it is. The heavier, the more powerful graphics card is required to achieve results that can at least be comparable. In the limiting case, this degenerates into top-end video cards and the price of a system at such a level at which the questions of choosing a processor cease to make sense — the savings turn out to be too meager. And in a mid-range gaming computer, inexpensive processors also feel fine. Especially the Athlon X4, it’s good to get rid of the irrational fear of dual-core processors inherent in some people 🙂

      Total

      By launching a modular architecture, AMD expected to increase single-threaded performance by increasing the clock frequency, and the total performance by actively using SMT technology. At the first stage, the policy worked, but then the company reached a dead end: the frequencies did not grow. The processors turned out to be too voracious, and the development of the 28 nm process technology did not help. We got acquainted with, in fact, all three of its versions, after which it is not surprising that they did not use it in multi-module processors — the gain compared to the older 32 nm, mastered by GF a long time ago, is not worth the trouble.       How to overclock

      When overclocking, it is wise to slowly increase the clock speed by 25-50 megahertz, and then check that the computer remains stable at this frequency and that the temperatures are in the desired range. If everything is in order, increase the speed a little more and try again. If you find that your processor does not get very hot, but at the new speed it is unstable, to the point of crashing or freezing, then you probably need to increase the voltage for the processor.

      ⇡#Overclocking

      Although the Athlon X4 950 name does not contain the letter K, the multiplier of this processor is not fixed, which opens the way to relatively easy overclocking. However, do not forget that the Bristol Ridge processor design came to desktops from the mobile environment, which means that the chips based on it are optimized for low power consumption rather than high frequencies.

      Therefore, it is quite natural that in practice the overclocking potential of the Athlon X4 950 turned out to be quite meager, and with an increase in the supply voltage to 1.5 V, we managed to achieve stable operation of our sample at only 4.2 GHz.

      Although the 28nm Athlon X4 with Excavator cores slightly outperforms the 14nm Ryzen in terms of overclocking potential, which can usually be overclocked to frequencies of about 4.0 GHz, such overclocking still cannot be called a good result. Earlier descendants of the Bulldozer were capable of operating at significantly higher frequencies. For example, previous Athlon X4 950 processors of the same series with model numbers from the ninth hundred, designed for the Socket FM2+ platform and based on the Kaveri design, easily took frequencies in the range from 4.5 to 4.8 GHz.

      At the same time, the maximum frequencies available for representatives of the Bristol Ridge generation are by no means limited by heat dissipation. The temperature of the Athlon X4 950 remains relatively low during overclocking. The increase in frequency is stopped due to some deep limitations in the semiconductor structure, which prevent the CPU from operating error-free at speeds much higher than the nominal one.
