Sapphire Graphics Card HD 6450 sports the AMD Radeon HD 6450 GPU and 2GB DDR3 graphics RAM. It features AMD HD3D technology for watching 3D Blu-ray movies and supports full HD (1080 progressive scan) resolution and supports 7. 1 HD surround sound via its HDMI port. HD6450 is CrossFireX ready for dual-GPU support.

What is in the box?

HD 6450 by Sapphire comes in a nice colorful box. The other box inside is made out of recycled paper. The package contains Sapphire HD6450 graphics card, brackets, a driver CD, a quick installation guide, and a product registration booklet.

Design

Sapphire Graphics Card HD 6450 does not look as impressive when compared to its power and features. It comes with a big heatsink but no fan. Well, the heat sink is big and looks like it can do without a fan. Also, the absence of a fan makes it a noiseless video card and gives you the peace of mind knowing that you’ll never end up with a dead fan.

HD 6450 has three ports: VGA port, DVI port, and most importantly an HDMI port, which supports 7.1-channel HD audio.

Features

Sapphire HD 6450 sports 650 MHz core clock with 160x Stream processors. It comes with 1GB 64-bit DDR3 memory with 1334 MHz effective BUS speed, and it can get hold of another 1GB from your RAM.

It has a few notable features for a video card priced under $50. For instance, it supports the 2nd generation Microsoft DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.1, Shader Model 5.0. Also, It supports Dolby TrueHD and DTSHD Master Audio enabling you to enjoy high bandwidth, 7.1 channel surround sound over HDMI.

Performance

Here at AffordableProductReview lab, we used the Sapphire Graphics Card HD 6450 to Build a Customized Entertainment Desktop under $700.

We played games such as Need For Speed Hot Pursuit (2011), The Run, Darksiders 1 and 2, Dirt 2, Silent Hill Downpour, Crysis 1 and 2. To get a decent frame rate (above 30 per second) we had to adjust gaming resolution to 1600 X 900 and tweak game details to medium. We could not play the games in HD resolution (1920x1080p) using the above-mentioned configuration of our PC. However, with 1600×900 the gaming experience was still very nice.

Later, we replaced the dual-core processor with a Core 2 Duo processor, and the DVD drive with a Blu-Ray drive and we experienced significant improvement in the gaming and movie watching experience. With this modified configuration of our PC, we could play the games in true HD resolution (1080p) at a frame rate just over 30 per second. Sapphire HD 6450 enabled us to enjoy Blu-Ray movies in extraordinary details.

Sapphire HD 6450’s core temperature never raised above 80-degree centigrade. We experienced no audio or video lagging of any kind.

Pros Cons
Affordable gaming graphics card, HDMI port. Latest games playable in medium details with full HD resolution at a frame rate above 25. Can’t play latest games in full details when resolution set to 1920 X 1080. Trying so will drop frame rate below 15 per second.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a low-profile affordable video card to play the latest games in medium details and at a decent frame rate (above 25 per second), then Sapphire Graphics Card HD 6450 DDR3 2GB could be a good choice for you.

Despite the fact that the current generation of Intel central processors has an integrated video core, and AMD has released a whole family of APUs (Accelerated processing unit) with a relatively powerful graphics unit, budget video cards have not yet disappeared from the market. It is likely that with the development of new technological standards and the further evolution of technologies, the need for low-power graphics accelerators will disappear altogether, but at the moment there is still a demand for low-end video cards. Manufacturing companies understand this and strive to release solutions that will meet the requirements of potential buyers, as well as have an extremely affordable cost. Today, our test lab received an inexpensive video card based on the low-end AMD graphics processor from the Radeon HD 6000 line, designed for installation in the most compact low-profile cases for HTPC systems or just budget PCs — GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6450 OC 1GB GDDR3 (GV-R645OC-1GI).

Given that AMD does not give exact recommendations regarding the frequency of the graphics core and memory for the «reference» version of the Radeon HD 6450 with GDDR3 memory, the OC prefix in the name of the tested video card. The maximum GPU frequency for the Radeon HD 6450, based on the specifications on the chipmaker’s website, can even be 750 MHz in normal mode without overclocking. Apparently, in the case of the GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6450 OC, we are talking about factory overclocking relative to the minimum recommended graphics core frequency, which is 625 MHz. In general, we can assume that the performance of the GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6450 OC video accelerator will be at the level of similar solutions with GDDR3 memory.

We’ll talk about how slow video memory affects the performance of a budget graphics accelerator, as well as about other features of the tested solution, we’ll talk a little later, and we’ll start our acquaintance traditionally with a review of the package.

The GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6450 OC comes in a small and colorful box, like most of GIGABYTE’s budget solutions. On the front side of the package, in addition to the product index, the manufacturer has placed information about the amount and type of video memory used. There is also a small logo here, which draws the attention of users to the fact that this version of the video card is «overclocked».

The reverse side of the box is more informative. Here you can get acquainted with the main characteristics of the video card in eight languages (including Russian), as well as read about the advantages of the gold-plated HDMI interface, which is equipped with the GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6450 OC.

In addition to the GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6450 OC video card itself, we found in the box only an installation and operating manual, a driver disk and a low-profile interface panel blank. Pretty standard set of accessories, typical for solutions designed for installation in HTPC (Home Theater PC).

A set of interfaces for image output is represented by DVI, HDMI and D-Sub ports. It should be borne in mind that when installing the GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6450 OC graphics accelerator in a low-profile case, only the first two interfaces will remain available, and the second shortened plug is not provided in the package. However, for most users, even two ports will be more than enough to connect a monitor, plasma panel, or projector to a video card. Note that, despite its budgetary status, the GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6450 OC graphics accelerator supports AMD Eyefinity technology, thanks to which you can connect up to 3 monitors to it simultaneously.

The GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6450 OC PCB (GV-R645OC-1GI) has a low-profile design on a corporate dark blue PCB. The design and arrangement of elements on it are generally the same as those for the «reference» sample, but with some differences.

So, for example, GIGABYTE engineers declare that the video card complies with the Ultra Durable 2 concept. This implies the use of only solid capacitors, ferrite core chokes and field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) with low resistance, which should ensure a long service life of the video card, less heat and more overclocking potential.

Additionally, we note that the maximum power consumption of solutions based on the Radeon HD 6450 does not exceed 20 W, and even the most compact and low-power power supply can handle such a load.

On the reverse side of the printed circuit board, two of the four video memory chips are soldered, as well as several elements of the VRM module.

In the case of the Radeon HD 6450 GPU, AMD does not provide multiple video adapters for joint graphics calculations using the CrossFireX bridge, and support for this technology is provided only at the software level.

The Caicos graphics chip, made according to the 40 nm process technology, is the central part of the tested video card. It contains 160 unified shader processors and 4 rasterizers. The frequencies of the graphics core and memory are 675 MHz for the core and 1600 MHz (effective) for the video memory. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is carried out via a 64-bit bus. The rest of the characteristics are shown in the screenshot above.

The video card uses 1 GB GDDR3 memory manufactured by Samsung, which is marked K4W2G1646C-HC11. The sampling time according to the documentation is 1. 1 ns, which corresponds to an effective frequency of 1800 MHz. Considering that the video memory on the GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6450 OC graphics accelerator initially operates at a frequency of 1600 MHz, we may be able to speed it up a bit using manual overclocking.

As we saw on the example of the HIS Radeon HD 6450 Silence video accelerator, which recently visited our test lab, a completely passive cooling system is quite enough to fully cool the GPU, given its low heat dissipation. However, a prerequisite for this is a well-ventilated case, which is at odds with the very concept of building a compact multimedia PC.

However, in the case of the GIGABYTE Radeon HD 6450 OC, the developers decided to use an active cooler, consisting of a small aluminum heatsink and a miniature fan. To evaluate the efficiency of the applied cooling system, we carried out standard testing using the Furmark utility. In the first case, the fan speed was set automatically by the video card, and in the second case, the maximum speed was set manually.

So, in the automatic cooler control mode, at maximum load, the graphics core of the video card warmed up to 55 degrees, which is a good indicator, given the fact that the cooler worked at only 50% of its capacity, creating a minimum noise level.

In the maximum fan speed mode, the cooling system is already clearly audible against the background of the work of the rest of the system components, while the GPU temperature drops by only 4 degrees.

When there is no load, the frequencies of the graphics core and memory are automatically reduced, allowing you to reduce the power consumption and heat dissipation of the video card. In this mode, the noise of the cooling system of a video card operating at 40% of its capacity is practically indistinguishable from the background of other elements of the system.

In general, the cooler used did an excellent job of cooling the energy-efficient Caicos chip. For the most compact HTPC cases without standard fans, we would still recommend using video cards with active cooling. The noise from such solutions is quite insignificant and is unlikely to interfere with the comfortable operation of the system, but you can safely forget about the problem of overheating of the graphics accelerator.

Using a computer as a media center today is quite common and familiar. Assembling a compact system that can be used for both office and multimedia tasks, in most cases, turns out to be much more profitable and more convenient than separately purchasing less versatile devices needed for the same purposes. And we continue to acquaint our readers with video cards designed for installation in miniature multimedia PCs and HTPC (Home Theater PC). As a rule, such solutions are not designed to run games and benchmarks, and, therefore, have poor performance in today’s demanding applications. In return, these graphics accelerators offer compact size, minimal power consumption and heat dissipation, the ability to create multi-monitor configurations, and enough functionality for hardware acceleration of many tasks (for example, video playback and encoding). Most recently, we reviewed the Gigabyte Radeon HD 6450 OC video card, and today another graphics accelerator based on the AMD Caicos GPU, the ASUS Radeon HD 6450 Silent, came into our test lab. Its main features are a completely passive cooling system and reduced to 512 MB of GDDR3 video memory. In addition, the ASUS Radeon HD 6450 Silent video card with 512 MB of video memory is one of the few modern solutions with a «cut down» memory bus to 32 bits. In order to reduce heat dissipation, the graphics core frequency was set by the manufacturer in accordance with the minimum value recommended by AMD for the Radeon HD 6450. And the memory frequency is only 17 MHz higher than the minimum which is recommended by the GPU developer. Other graphics card specifications ASUS Radeon HD 6450 Silent did not undergo significant changes compared to the «reference» accelerator on the Radeon HD 6450, but the use of a 32-bit memory bus should have a negative impact on the performance of this model. We will tell you more about the performance and other features of the tested graphics accelerator below, and before that, let’s talk a little about its packaging and delivery.

The video card comes in a medium sized colorful box. The design and decorations are quite familiar to ASUS products. On the front side, the manufacturer lists some characteristics of the video card, and a large round sticker with the inscription «0dB Cooling» draws attention to the fact that the product inside the box has a completely passive cooling system.

On the back of the package, the manufacturer placed the main specifications of the video card in 12 languages (including Russian), a brief connection diagram for displays with various interfaces, another mention of the use of a silent cooling system, as well as a list of system requirements for the computer in which it is planned to install ASUS Radeon HD 6450 Silent video cards, although it can be installed in almost any computer with a free PCI-E x16 slot.

In addition to the video card itself, we found in the package:

  • CD with drivers and utilities;

  • Two low-profile brackets for installing video cards in compact cases;

  • Operating Instructions.

This package is fairly standard for most budget solutions under $50.

The user can use the DVI, VGA or HDMI interface to display the image from the video card on the screen of a monitor, plasma panel, TV or projector. The vast majority of users will be able to connect the necessary device to the video card to display an image without using additional adapters, which, moreover, would slightly increase the cost. Additionally, we note that, despite the budget status, the AMD Radeon HD 6450 graphics processor supports Eyefinity technology, which will allow you to connect up to three monitors to the ASUS Radeon HD 6450 Silent video card at the same time.

The printed circuit board has a very compact size and is made on red textolite. Its design and the arrangement of elements on it generally repeat those for the «reference» sample, and this is not surprising. The solutions we tested earlier based on the Radeon HD 6450 from Gigabyte and HIS also have a printed circuit board with a minimum of differences from the «reference». Given that the power consumption of the ASUS Radeon HD 6450 Silent graphics card does not exceed 20 W in load, the power converter includes only two phases: one for the graphics core and video memory, respectively.

Several elements of the power stabilization system and two of the four memory chips are soldered on the back of the board. Here, as well as on the front side, we see seats for two more microcircuits, but they are used only in the model with 1 GB of memory.

The frequencies of the graphics core and memory are 625 MHz for the core and 1100 MHz (effective) for the video memory. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is carried out via a 32-bit bus, which is a non-standard solution for products based on the Radeon HD 6450. The rest of the characteristics are shown in the screenshot above.

Video memory with a total volume of 512 MB was recruited using 4 x 128 MB GDDR3 chips (H5TQ1G83TFR H9C). The chips are manufactured by Hynix and, according to the documentation, have a nominal frequency of 1333 MHz. Recall that initially the memory on the ASUS Radeon HD 6450 Silent video card operates at an effective frequency of 1100 MHz, which means that, theoretically, we can try to speed it up using overclocking and get some performance boost.

As we mentioned above, the low frequency of the low-power graphics core and the use of slow, and therefore cold, video memory allowed the manufacturer to use a completely passive cooling system for the ASUS Radeon HD 6450 Silent. This is eloquently evidenced by the word «Silent» in the name of the model, as well as the design of the product packaging.

The cooling system of the ASUS Radeon HD 6450 Silent video card is represented by a small aluminum radiator, the shape of which is probably already well known to our regular readers, because coolers of this shape are quite often used for budget ASUS video cards.

In order to find out how effective such a cooling system would be for a Radeon HD 6450 video card, we ran our standard test using the FurMark utility. At the same time, we conducted tests in two modes: in the first case, the video card was simply installed in a well-ventilated case, in the second case, the VIZO Propeller cooler was additionally used to provide even more cold air to the video card heatsink.

In the maximum load mode, the temperature of the graphics core did not exceed 63 degrees with zero cooler noise. Considering that no additional cooling of the graphics adapter itself was carried out, this is really a good result.

After adding an additional VIZO Propeller cooler to the system, the GPU temperature dropped another 22 degrees and was only 41 degrees at maximum load. However, lovers of silence would rather observe higher temperatures of the graphics accelerator than agree to add a noise source to the system in order to improve its temperature regime. In addition, an additional fan may simply not fit into the most compact mini-ITX cases, because most often they have only one expansion slot.

When there is no load, the graphics core and memory frequencies are automatically lowered to save power and reduce heat generation. GPU temperature in this mode does not exceed 45 degrees at zero noise level.

On the whole, the passive cooler used, despite its compact size, showed decent efficiency in cooling the energy-efficient AMD Caicos graphics chip.
