Today AMD has announced the ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series of mainstream graphics cards priced at well under $100. These are described as being able to deliver exceptional gaming and HD multimedia performance while consuming less power than a standard light bulb.

To cards have been announced today:

  • ATI Radeon HD 4670 — 512 MB of GDDR3 — $79
  • ATI Radeon HD 4650 — 512 MB of GDDR2 — $69

Both cards feature 320 stream processing cores.

Note: A version of the HD 4670 with 1GB of memory is scheduled to be released later this month.

The press release accompanying the release emphasizes how little power these new cards draw:

Both the ATI Radeon HD 4670 and ATI Radeon HD 4650 deliver substantial gaming horsepower with minimal power draw – the ATI Radeon HD 4670 operating at under 60 watts and the ATI Radeon HD 4650 operating under 50 watts under full load – eliminating the need for additional power connectors and making installation a cinch.

Built with efficiency, scalability and performance in mind, the ATI Radeon HD 4600 series sets a new performance-per-watt standard for mainstream graphics products, thanks to the enhanced bandwidth of DDR3, new power management capabilities that provide greater performance and efficiency, and 55nm technology. The series features AMD’s second generation ATI PowerPlay™ technology which allows for automatic power adjustments based on the activity of the graphics processing unit (GPU), resulting in significant power savings when the GPU is idle. Moreover, ATI PowerPlay enables advanced clock gating, as well as increased voltage and memory scaling, delivering performance on demand with exceptional efficiency.

These cards also pack a punch:

The result is that even in today’s most demanding games like Crysis, the ATI Radeon HD 4600 series delivers up to double the performance of competing products at the same price.

This claim is backed up by the following footnote:

The MSRP of the ATI Radeon HD 4670 is USD $79 and is the same price as the Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT based on www.newegg.com data available as of September 4, 2008. The ATI Radeon HD 4670 delivers up to double the performance of the Nvidia GeForce 9500 GT in games including Race Driver Grid (High Quality settings at both 1680×1050 and 1440×900), Half Life 2 (High Quality settings at 1680×1050 4xAA/16xAF), and Crysis (Medium Quality settings at 1680×1050 and 1440×900) as reported at http://www.rage3d. com/board/showthread.php?t=33931118.

Gigabyte Radeon HD 4650

One 55nm video memory chip starts at a minimum frequency of 600 megahertz. The graphics processor ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series 1024 MB, the characteristics of which indicate the presence of a 128-bit bus, is capable of displaying an image on two monitors at once. The number of processors responsible for the construction of three-dimensional objects is 320, and the number of texture units is 32. The number of pixel filtering units is 8.

The ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series has a DirectX support specification of version 10 and the graphics library runs on OpenGL 3.2.
As for the graphics memory, its size is 1024 megabytes, and the operating frequency is 800 megahertz. The compatible memory format that this video card can work with is DDR2. Since the video card is of the old generation, the motherboard must have an AGP connector to connect it.
The video card comes with a manufacturer’s driver disk that allows you to customize the video card and unleash its potential.

User reviews of the Gigabyte Radeon HD 4650

In the positive characteristics of the ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series 4650, many users note that the performance of the card is at a high level, there is decent cooling, which is important for graphics accelerators.
Among the shortcomings, and there are few of them, there are problems with motherboard chipsets that cannot be updated. This raises the question of hardware compatibility. Many negative reviews are left by users who are dissatisfied with the price offer.

ASUS Radeon HD 4670

According to the characteristics of ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series 4670 has two options for video memory size: 512 megabytes and 1 gigabyte. The variant from the manufacturer ASUS has a video memory capacity of 1,024 megabytes and a bandwidth of 128 bits. Although it is positioned as an office one, many users use it as a gaming one, but with selective settings, without trying to run particularly demanding games.
In terms of data transfer, we can say that ASUS has abandoned the standard AGP adapter and uses the PCI-E 16x interface to make data transfer even faster. The card fits on a single slot in a standard-sized motherboard, and there is also support for CrossFire and CrossFire X technology, which allows you to connect from two to four video cards. It turns out to achieve unprecedented performance in image processing.

The graphics processor is called RV730 and has an operating frequency of 750 megahertz. The technological process, as in the younger model, is 55 nanometers, the supported video memory format is GDDR3. 32 texture units provide high-quality rendering of a two-dimensional image, and 8 rasterization units were added for better image smoothing. Thanks to the ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series, the 4670 shader specification of 320 pieces, the graphics card is able to perform more calculations.
DirectX 10 allows you to better work with all applications that require GPU support. Object anti-aliasing level is one of the most popular technologies in graphics cards. 24x anti-aliasing will provide a smooth and crisp image, however, this setting can negatively affect the overall performance of the card, so experts recommend reducing this setting to an acceptable image quality.
For a decent rendering quality and a realistic picture, technology such as anisotropic filtering is used, which can be increased up to 16 times on this card.

User Reviews of ASUS Radeon HD 4670

In positive reviews, users note good performance in games, as well as an affordable price. Also, many are satisfied with the cooling and design solution.
Negative reviews were left by those users who complained about the noise from the video card. Also, few noted that these video cards are incompatible with their motherboards.

Radeon HD 4600 Adapter Specifications — ABC IMPORT

30-11-2018 22:00

Contents of the article:

  • The main technical characteristics of the graphics adapter
  • Conclusion

Modern graphics adapters are quite expensive. But what if the budget is limited? It makes sense to look at video cards from the past. Among the old video cards, there are pretty good models that can be quite acceptable for a modern budget computer. One such product is the Radeon HD 4600 graphics adapter from the cult company ATI, released under the AMD label. This adapter, of course, will not pull modern toys, but for other entertainment it will do. His characteristics are still nothing. And we will now consider them.

The main technical characteristics of the graphic adapter

So, the HD 4600 series graphics accelerators are made on the RV730PRO core, which in turn is made using the 56 micron process technology. At the time of their release, this was the most advanced technology. And then video cards were capable of a lot. This same core operates at a frequency of 600 megahertz. Not so little for an adapter from the past. But the card’s memory operates at a frequency of 1000 megahertz, which at that time was an incredible breakthrough. However, the HD 4600 was not among the top graphics cards. This adapter uses GDDR3 type and 128 bit bus width. This allows for excellent color depth. To install the adapter in a computer, you will need a PCIe 2.
