    Like the vast majority of consumer 3D printers, the Printrbot Simple uses FFF fusing technology. It is almost identical to the patented Stratasys FDM technology used in desktop devices, which are about three times more expensive than this model.

    Due to its simple design, Printrbot Simple does not provide ideal 3D printing quality and precision, and does not allow high-quality prototypes. It is rather a toy that will allow you to study the principles of operation of such devices and understand whether you need such a printer at all. nine0003

    2. Kinpo XYZprinting da Vinci 1.0 ($500)

    Taiwanese company Kinpo’s XYZprinting da Vinci 1.0 printer was introduced in December 2013 and has not yet gone on sale, but it is already clear that it will be a much more interesting device than Printrbot simple.

    da Vinci also features FFF fusing technology. ABS plastic is used as consumables, the maximum dimensions of the created object are 7.8 cubic meters. inches, or 20 cm cubed; the declared level of accuracy, depending on the printing speed, is from 0.4 to 0.1 mm. nine0003

    The XYZprinting da Vinci 1.0 looks like a very attractive entry-level offering, and its «coffee» design already fits right in with the home office interior.

    3. RepRap Open-Source Line ($470-620)

    This device is unique compared to all modern 3D printers. Unlike the rest, the design and software of the RepRap printer, developed at the University of Bath in the UK, is available on an open source basis and is offered free of charge to everyone. What’s more, the assembly parts for these printers can be printed on them! nine0003

    Of course, RepRap is far from the only project developing 3D printer designs that are designed to be self-assembled. For example, here you can see an impressive list of similar devices and compare prices. nine0003

    It is important to note that the vast majority of 3D printers run their own unique software, in some cases free (see here for a partial list). In addition, the correct setting of the assembled unit and its timely maintenance, including adjustment to the level of the base plate and cleaning the extruder, are of great importance. Therefore, self-assembly and ensuring the operability of a 3D printer can be a non-trivial task even for structurally simple models. nine0003

    Workhorses

    Mid-range 3D printers strike the right balance between ease of use, functionality and, of course, price. The vast majority of them are equipped with a heated base and are able to work with ABS plastic.

    4. Cubify Cube ($1,300)

    The Cubify Cube 3D printer is considered an entry-level model by this manufacturer, and this is confirmed by its characteristics. Nevertheless, it has a bright, memorable design of a high-quality household appliance and no longer looks like the fruit of a mad scientist, but like a good serial device. nine0003

    The device is capable of creating objects with a volume of 5.5 cubic meters. inches, or 14 cm cubed, from PLA and ABS plastics with a layer thickness of up to 0. 2 mm. The printer can be connected to a computer not only via a wired USB interface, but also via Wi-Fi, it supports reading files from a USB drive. The price of one PLA or ABS cartridge, which should be enough for 13-14 medium-sized objects, is $49.

    Cubify Cube is a very successful device suitable for use in the hands of unskilled users. The manufacturer’s website has a lot of 3D models that can be printed on 3D printers, but not all of them are suitable for this particular model, and it’s not so easy to understand. In addition, free models from repositories like MakerBot Thingiverse do not always print correctly. nine0003

    5. Afinia H-Series h579 ($1,560)

    The Afinia H-Series h579 doesn’t look as homey as the Cubify Cube, it looks more like some kind of desktop machine. Funnily enough, the extruder shroud on the Afinia is itself 3D printed.

    The printer does not have its own controls and cannot read files from USB drives, however, thanks to the built-in memory, it can be disconnected from the computer during printing.

    On the other hand, it provides a higher resolution (0.15 mm compared to 0.2 mm). Printing is carried out from PLA and ABS plastics, and the maximum size of the created object is 5 cubic meters. inches, or 12 cm cubed. nine0003

    In general, the Afinia H-Series h579 received favorable reviews (see for example here or here), also due to the user-friendly software.

    Models for the Particularly Demanding

    If you’re looking for an all-in-one unit with really top quality performance, you’ll have to shell out at least $2,000 for it. You’ll get great detail and fluidity, but be prepared to sacrifice speed for that.

    6. Lulzbot TAZ 3 ($2,200)

    The LulzBot TAZ 3 3D printer from the American company Aleph Object differs from its competitors primarily by the ability to print with almost any materials used in such devices: in addition to ABS, PLA, HIPS and PVA plastics, it is able to form three-dimensional objects even from wood!

    More precisely, it is a special «wood thread» consisting of a mixture of fine wood fibers and a binder polymer. At the same time, the products look and smell like wood, and the properties of this “wood” are close to PLA plastic. By changing the temperature, you can change the color of the material and even create fake «growth rings». nine0003

    Lulzbot TAZ 3 provides layer thicknesses from 0.075 to 0.35 mm, a maximum print speed of 200 mm per second, and object sizes of 11.7 x 10.8 x 9.8 inches, or 29.8 x 27.5 ×25 cm.
    The device can be controlled through a built-in controller with a color LCD monitor, and it is possible to print without a computer at all — from SD flash cards.

    7. Makerbot Replicator 2 ($2,200)

    The well-known Makerbot Replicator 2 3D printer has won multiple awards and has been named best in class multiple times. It is characteristic that it has been produced since the autumn of 2012, but not only is it not discontinued, but it does not even lose in price! During this time, only a two-color modification with two Replicator 2X printheads appeared, which will cost $ 2,800.

    The device is capable of printing with a resolution of up to 0.1 mm per layer, which is still a very good indicator, and at the time of its appearance it was generally a record. The only limitation is that this accuracy is only achieved when working with biodegradable PLA plastic, which is less practical than, for example, ABS. The maximum dimensions of objects are 11.2 x 6 x 6.1 inches, or 28.5 x 15.3 x 15.5 cm (volume — 67 cc). The price of consumables is the most common — $48 per coil.

    9The 0002 Makerbot Replicator 2 is a very common 3D printer, and there are a huge number of ready-made 3D models for it on MakerBot Thingiverse. MakerWare’s own modeling software has received a lot of positive feedback and is easy to use.

    8. Cubify CubeX, ($2,800)

    The CubeX 3D printer is a mid-range Cubify-branded 3D printer capable of creating objects to larger than the Makerbot Replicator 2 at the same quality. Print resolution, according to various sources, ranges from 0.125 to 0.1 mm per layer, and the maximum object size is 10.75 × 10.75 × 9.5 inches, or 27.3 x 27.3 x 24.1 cm; as advertised, it can print a basketball.

    The design of the CubeX is typical of the Cubify brand: it looks like some average kitchen appliance like a microwave oven or a tabletop dishwasher. At the same time, the base model has two significantly more expensive modifications: the Duo, capable of printing in two colors, will cost $3,300, and the Trio with three printheads will already cost $4,400.

    9. Formlabs Form 1 ($3,300)

    Formlabs Form 1 is a kind of «high-end» consumer printers, which already works on quite industrial SL stereolithography technology, but at the same time fits on the table.

    Instead of applying thin layers of plastic one after the other during stereolithography, a light-sensitive liquid polymer based on methacrylate is illuminated layer by layer with a laser beam through a photomask and then hardens.
