When it comes to finding the best PC case for your next build, there are a few key areas that everyone needs to keep in mind. Ensuring your components have sufficient airflow is one of the most important, and many of the best PC case manufacturers take care of this issue with ease. Trickier areas to tackle, such as aesthetically pleasing design and acoustic performance, are not so easily handled without additional costs. Still, regardless, the best PC cases tend to offer a balance of all three.
Build quality and performance are just two of the factors that should weigh in on your decision. You need to think about form factor, if you care about viewing your system through a tempered glass panel, and what budget restrictions you have, as all these can affect your decision.
In our search for the best PC cases out there, we have ensured to include high-quality models from reputable manufacturers. Furthermore, regardless if you are going for a full-tower, Mini-ITX, or a case constructed entirely of tempered glass, our recommendations have spacious interiors and promote excellent airflow. If you’re interested in seeing what sets them apart from other cases, then read on. You can also check out our collection of PC case reviews right here.

Motherboard Form Factor
Before buying a case, you’ll need to know your motherboard’s form factor. The three most popular form factors are ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX, each of which being smaller than the former.
Being smaller means you have less room for components and that you’ll generally have fewer features. This isn’t bad if you don’t need a lot, but if you’re making a high-end gaming build, or a mid-range build you intend to upgrade in the future, then you might want to stick with the classic ATX board.
PC Case Form Factor
Since there are motherboards with different sizes, there will obviously be smaller cases that can’t accommodate for larger form factors. However, larger cases can usually fit smaller motherboards but always be sure to double-check compatibility before you make a purchase.
There are three prominent types of computer cases (although there are more) and each is compatible with different types of motherboards:
- Full-tower PC cases are the largest cases and can work with E-ATX, ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX. Their large size is more meant for extra components rather than exceptionally larger motherboards. You can view our best full tower PC cases here.
- Mid-tower PC cases are the most popular and can also work with motherboards from Mini-ITX up to ATX.
- Mini-ITX PC cases sacrifice the larger ATX boards, but can always fit Mini-ITX boards inside, with the odd PC case being able to cope with Micro-ATX.
Form factor aside, there are cases that follow similar dimensions but don’t conform with design. Take open-air PC cases, for example, giving water-cooling enthusiasts a very unique chassis to create some incredible loop designs.
Airflow And Water Cooling
If it weren’t for your CPU cooler, your processor would reach dangerous temps. While PC components are designed to operate at relatively high temperatures without being damaged, that doesn’t mean you want them to get too hot. If your components overheat, it will damage them and significantly reduce their lifespan.
When building a computer, it needs to have good airflow. Most cases ship with fans already installed, some even with built-in LEDs. It would also be wise to have additional space for aftermarket fans or a radiator if you choose to use an all-in-one cooler.
I would recommend having at least two case fans, but three or more is ideal. If you’re only using two, you’ll want one of them to draw in cool air while the other exhausts hot air. This system will keep a constant stream of air passing over your components, while at the same time drawing in cooler air and expelling warm air.
Fan configurations vary based on your case, and the level of airflow your system requires. For example, heavy overclockers would need more airflow to their hot components than the average builder.
Of course, some PC cases are designed to benefit from negative air pressure (only have exhaust fans), but this can attract dust in unwanted places, so be wary.
Knowing how to pick the best case for water cooling can be tricky. Water coolers tend to have large radiators and pumps, so you’re going to want a case with plenty of space for the water cooler itself, not to mention the large radiator fans.
Drive Bays And Expansion Slots
In general, cases ship with three different kinds of drive bays, each with their own uses:
- 2.5-inch bays are generally used for SSDs (solid-state drives)
- 3.5-inch bays are used for standard mechanical hard drives.
- 5.25-inch bays are used for optical drives (aka DVD or BluRay readers). However, many manufacturers have started to do away with 5.25-inch optical drive bays since physical disks are becoming less and less popular (or needed).
Cases will also come with expansion slots. These are found in the back of the case and are used for graphics cards, sound cards, etc. That’s to say they are very vital.
Some PC cases now do away with drive bays all together and favor SSD/HDD mounting brackets instead. This system is no different and is actually a more efficient way of using space in some cases.

CHECK PRICE
The Lian-Li O11 Dynamic was a hit back when it was released and this XL version is no different, with the same non-standard layout and one of the nicest designs on the PC case market. This computer case is, of course, meant for water-cooling but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a standard build in there, you’ll just want to make sure you include an efficient amount of fans.
This spacious enclosure can support motherboards from Mini-ITX all the way up to E-ATX. There is an optional accessory you can purchase if you wanted to fit an EBB too.
With the increased size over its predecessor, it is now even easier to install the most ambitious of systems inside. The case also comes with hot-swap drives, which is a great feature when compared to your standard cages/ bracket mounts. Inside you get four hot-swap 2.5″/3.5″ and six internal for 2.5″ SSD.
The case features are tailored primarily for custom water-cool builds, with some added cutouts for different system configurations. Furthermore, everything almost tool-free and easy to access, which is surprisingly rare with PC cases. There is a lot of support for radiators and fans. The front I/O ports are fairly standard but it is good to see USB Type-C involved.
There are eight standard expansion slots at the back with an option to vertically mount your GPU too, supporting high-end GPUs up to 169mm in height.
Overall this is one of the best PC cases we have ever seen, with great GPU cooling, hot-swap drives, great rad/fan support, multi-PSU support, and one of the nicest looking designs out there, great stuff Lian-Li.

NZXT are no strangers to premium cases and this mid-tower, the H510, is yet another impressive model from the brand. At first glance, you instantly recognize it’s from NZXT with the overall design being minimalist yet elegant. The quality speaks for itself and this PC case has impressive cooling performance too.
The case supports motherboards up to ATX and comes with a healthy amount of features for the price. Along with the included 120mm Aer fans, we see superb water-cooling support, a PSU shroud, cable management brackets, and tempered glass.
NZXT has added USB Type-C port to this refreshed model and it features a vertical GPU mount option, which is always great in a tempered glass case. The case gives off a sleek feel with its two-tone glossy metal panels and the “cable bar” rounds off the design nicely.
Considering the modest asking price, the H510 is easily one of the best mid-towers on the market. This case will make your PC build look superb with minimal effort and thanks to NZXT’s clever design, it is incredibly easy to build in.

Phanteks takes build quality and useful features as seriously as anyone else, all while offering superb PC cases at affordable prices. The brand has cases to suit all budgets and needs and the Enthoo 719 sits as one of the best full-tower cases you can get. Not only is this tower huge, but it’s also built to last and looks incredibly premium. Furthermore, the price to performance with this chassis is near unbeatable.
This PC case supports motherboards from EEB all the way down to Mini-ITX and can even support a dual system setup. That’s right, if you are a streamer/ content creator you can get everything you need and fit it inside this one full-tower.
Some may consider this to be a “budget” full-tower but don’t let that fool you, this is one classy chassis. Any type of build looks amazing behind the huge uninterrupted tempered glass panel. Water-cooling isn’t a must but the main features go a long way to support a custom loop setup. Furthermore, there is a vast amount of drive options at hand here, with 11 places to mount a 2.5″ SSD and 12 spots for a 3.5″ drive.
As there is plenty of radiator and fan support options, the Phanteks Enthoo 719 comes with a fan hub. A simple feature to include but it much appreciated when you need to tidy up the cables in this build. Looks great and performs even better, a superb full-tower PC case.

The Best Mini-ITX PC Case
NZXT h310 – Mini-ITX

How we review
CHECK PRICE
The NZXT h310 comes with similar features to its bigger brothers, only compacted into the smaller form factor. The design is, once again, superb from NZXT and this Mini-ITX-only case is actually a little bigger than most competitor models on the market.
With the h310 you’d struggle to find many design features that are different from the H510. This comes with tempered glass, cable management brackets, and a few SSD mounting options too. Furthermore, it is available in similar color schemes and has impressive water-cooling support for the price.
The case comes with two preinstalled Aer 120mm fans, so make sure your ITX board can accommodate for this. Otherwise, go for the h310i model with the included smart device V2.
This may not offer the same compact size as cases such as the Thermaltake Core V1 or Fractal Design Node 202 PC cases but its unique size in this bracket means you can get some impressive builds in there and fit ATX sized PSUs.
With its aesthetic steel and tempered glass design, it’s a real sight to behold.

The Best Silent PC Case
Fractal Design Define 7

CHECK PRICE
Fractal Design has released some unbelievably good PC cases over the years and this latest refresh follows that trend. The Define 7 is essentially the latest update on the brilliant R6, aimed towards those who love silent operation. The interior, color options, and tempered glass options all remain the same, with a few tweaks that make this one of the best silent PC cases I have seen in recent years.
You can’t hide from Fractal’s build quality, it hits you in the face straight away. Furthermore, the brand constantly adds useful features whenever they spot a gap for one and while you may not always need it, it’s great to have these extra options.
We see a lightly tinted glass back on these and the interior now sports a gorgeous white coat on the tempered glass models. Of course, if you go for the non-TG version the inside remains that gun-metal grey color. This case supports all the way up to E-ATX but you will lose the use of the cutouts. For optimal use go for ATX form factor when building in this case.
Sound performance is very close to its predecessor, with the added quality of life improvements making all the difference. The cooling performance takes a hit with the case door at the front but you are most likely grabbing one of these to cut down on system noise. The front, sides, and top all feature heavy-duty sound dampening materials to give you excellent acoustic performance.
This well-constructed case comes with a modular layout, plenty of cooling support, water-cooling support, and drive options. A truly amazing case and one of the best for silent operation.

The 7 Best Cheap PC Cases Under $50
If you’re building a budget PC and you need an affordable case to put it inside, in this guide, we’ve rated and reviewed seven of the best cheap PC cases under $50 to help you find the right case for your build.
If you’re looking to build a new gaming PC, but you’re working with a tight budget, the first component that you’ll want to scale back on is your case. While computer cases do play important roles in the cooling process, they won’t have as significant of an impact on your system’s performance as your other components will.
And, for the most part, you can get adequate cooling and airflow out of a cheaper case. So, while certain cases might lure you in with their aesthetics, the reality is that you’re going to be able to build a more powerful system if you minimize the amount you spend on your case and allocate the savings to more important components (like your processor, graphics card, and RAM).
Fortunately, though, spending less on your case doesn’t mean you can’t get a nice-looking chassis that has decent airflow. In fact, there are quite a few different cheap PC cases that will give you enough room to house just about any single GPU setup and there are plenty of nice-looking options as well. And, in this guide, we’re going to take a look at seven of the best budget PC cases under $50.

Best Cheap PC Case:
AeroCool Bolt
Our Rating: 8.6/10
Check Price on Amazon
While we do like the Thermaltake Versa h28 listed below, the AeroCool Bolt is an option that offers pretty much all the same features, but in a bigger mid tower format and with some RGB lighting thrown in. The Bolt comes with a tempered glass side panel, one preinstalled fan, a grilled front panel (to help with airflow), an RGB strip on the front panel, and a full length PSU shroud.
And, it gives you all that for just slightly over $50.
That’s a steal of a deal. And, if you didn’t think you’d be able to build a budget system that performs well and looks good, this case might just change your mind.
Its only downside is that the front panel is only grilled/meshed on half of the panel. This should still provide adequate airflow, but a fully grilled front panel would have been more ideal.
However, the 355mm GPU clearance that the Bolt offers is enough to house even an RTX 3080 Ti. So, this is a cheap PC case that can house a very powerful system.
The bottom line, though, is that if you’re looking for a nice-looking case that you can build an affordable gaming PC in, the AeroCool Bolt will give you plenty of room, good airflow, and nice aesthetics, all for right at ~$50.
Affordable High Airflow:
Thermaltake Versa h28
Our Rating: 8.6/10
Check Price on Amazon
Thermaltake’s h28 micro-ATX case and the AeroCool Bolt are our picks for the best airflow options among cases under $50. The h28 is an all-black case that will give budget builders a nice-looking chassis that will provide adequate airflow for their components.
The h28 can support graphics cards up to 350mm long and CPU coolers as tall as 155mm. With 350mm of clearance for the graphics card, that means the h28 can house pretty much any graphics card currently available.
It can also support three different radiators at the same time (on the front, top, and back of the case) with the ability to hold a radiator as long as 280mm (on the front of the case). So, if you want to put a 280mm AIO cooler in this case, you definitely won’t be lacking for options that will fit inside of it.
As a micro-ATX case it can hold both micro-ATX and mini-ITX motherboards.
Ultimately, for right about $50, the Thermaltake Versa h28 comes with the room, clearance, and airflow necessary to house a high-end gaming computer. So, if you are looking for a budget-friendly case that you can use to build a solid system with, or a case that you can grow into in the future, the h28 is a solid option that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.
Budget Tempered Glass:
FSP CMT260
Our Rating: 8.6/10
Check Price on Amazon
Most budget PC cases don’t get a lot of love, but FSP’s CMT260 is probably an even lesser known option. However, it is one of the cheapest PC cases out there. Its biggest feature is probably its tempered glass side panel as you typically won’t find tempered glass on a case in this price range.
Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t come with a fully-ventilated front panel—which will restrict airflow. In most cases, this won’t have a drastic impact on system performance, but over the long run, a fully-ventilated front panel will help in ensuring your components stay cool.
Still, though, at just under $50, the FSP CMT260 is one of the cheapest PC mid tower tempered glass PC cases currently on the market. So, if you’re looking to save some money, it wouldn’t be the worst route to go.
Overall, for a little under $50 you get a nice-looking case that has a tempered glass side panel, some RGB-lighting on the front panel, and enough room inside to house a solid system.
Budget Mini-ITX Case:
Thermaltake Core V1
Our Rating: 8.4/10
Check Price on Amazon
Another Thermaltake case that comes in under $50 and is worth mentioning is the Core V1. The Core V1 is a mini-ITX case and it was also one of our choices for the best cube-style cases as well.
Despite its compact size, it can still hold graphics cards that are up to 260mm long and CPU coolers that are up to 140mm tall. So, while you can’t fit a longer graphics card in this case, or a taller heatsink, there are plenty of low-profile graphics cards and low-profile coolers that will work with it. In fact, you can fit a mini RTX 3070 inside of the Core V1, which means you won’t be limited in the kind of gaming-specific system you can build in this case.
Again, the case is a mini-ITX form-factor so you will only be able to fit a mini-ITX motherboard inside of it.
In the end, if you don’t have a huge budget, but you still want to build a small form-factor gaming PC, the Thermaltake Core V1 will allow you to do so without having to spend a ton of money on your case.
Honorable Mention #1:
Aerocool Cylon
Our Rating: 8.5/10
Check Price on Amazon
Much like the AeroCool Bolt and the FSP CMT260, the AeroCool Cylon is a bit of a lesser known option. Aerocool is an established PC hardware brand, but they don’t have quite as much name recognition as the more well-known brands (Cooler Master, Thermaltake, NZXT, Corsair, etc.) However, like the Bolt, the Cylon is another solid option in the under $50 price range. It comes with a full-length PSU shroud, an acrylic side panel, and an RGB strip on the front panel of the case that stretches from the bottom of the panel to the top of the panel.
It can also hold graphics cards up to 371mm in length and CPU coolers up to 155mm in height. And, it can house radiators/AIOs as long as 240mm on the front of the case.
The case has a really nice-looking design, but the one downside is the lack of ventilation on the front panel. It does come with the option to install two 120mm fans on the PSU shroud to help remove heat from your graphics card, though, but the solid front panel won’t allow for as much air intake as you might want.
Still, though, this might be the best looking case under $50 when all things are considered. And, it is the only option on this list to come preinstalled with RGB lighting. So, if you prefer aesthetics over airflow, this wouldn’t be a bad option.
Honorable Mention #2:
Thermaltake Versa h27
Our Rating: 8.4/10
Check Price on Amazon
Thermaltake’s Versa H-Series is a solid lineup of budget-friendly cases. We’ve provided a picture of the Thermaltake Versa h28 above, but the Thermaltake Versa h27 is a good option as well.
The h27 is a micro-ATX case that offers GPU clearance up to 350mm long and CPU cooler clearance up to 155mm tall. Unlike the h28, though, the h27 doesn’t come with a grilled front panel. That’s not ideal as it will not allow for as much airflow as some of the options listed above.
However, the h27 is also one of the cheapest PC cases on this list and so if you’re looking to save a little bit more, it’s worth considering.
But, ultimately, we recommend one of the more ventilated options listed above.
Honorable Mention #3:
MasterBox Q300L
Our Rating: 8.3/10
Check Price on Amazon
The MasterBox Q300L is another impressive budget-friendly PC case. This one comes in at a little over $50 (as do a majority of the cases on this list—thanks inflation), but it is still a solid option for anyone who is looking for an affordable option to house their components.
The case comes with two easy-to-remove dust filters on the top and front panels of the case. The Q300L also offers quite a bit of flexibility in where you can place the I/O panel by giving you the ability to place it in six different locations.
All-in-all, while we like some of the other case options listed above a bit better, the Q300L will be an excellent option for anyone who prefers its aesthetics and unique feature-set.
Will A Budget PC Case Work for Your Build?
While you might be tempted to spend more on your case, if you’re trying to build a budget gaming PC, you might be sacrificing overall system performance for a nicer-looking case. However, any of the budget-friendly PC cases listed above will help you get a solid overall case that will still keep you under budget. So, if you need a cheap PC case for your upcoming build, one of the options above should work for you.
4 Things to Consider Before Buying
While computer cases aren’t components that play a direct role in the kind of performance your PC will be able to achieve, they are still very important to your overall system.
PC cases house and protect all of your components and they also play a big role in influencing airflow in your system to keep it running cool (at least, the good cases do.)
But, there are so many case options out there. And, they all come in different sizes and with different designs and with a huge variety of feature sets. So, despite the fact that a computer case is one of the more exciting components to choose, there is a lot to consider when trying to pick the right one for your needs.
In this post, we’ll go over four different factors (some with a lot of sub-topics) to consider when choosing a case for your PC build. Hopefully, by the end of this post, you’ll have a better idea of what to look for in a case so that you can be better able to find the best PC case for you and your new system.

Case Compatibility, Clearance, and Form-Factor
Technically, this section could just simply be titled “Case Compatibility,” because, when talking about case compatibility, both clearance issues and form-factor are really just two subsets of case compatibility.
But, for the sake of organizing this post, I’ll break case compatibility down into those two sections:
Form-Factors and Common Case Sizes
There are really four common case sizes:
- Full Tower (Large)
- Mid Tower (Medium)
- Micro-ATX (Small)
- Mini-ITX (Smaller)
Technically, there are no standards for case size—at least, in terms of the dimensions of a case. All cases, however, support one or more of the various computer motherboard form-factors.
The most common motherboard form-factors are:
- Extended ATX
- Standard ATX
- Micro-ATX
- Mini-ITX
You can check out our more extensive guide on the differences between micro-ATX, mini-ITX, and standard ATX motherboards here.
The bigger the case is, the more likely it is to be able to hold a variety of motherboard form factors. For instance, some full tower cases out there can hold any of the four common motherboard form-factors.
Of course, putting a mini-ITX motherboard in a full tower case is going to look silly. But, in terms of compatibility, it is possible to do so.
On the other hand, smaller form-factor cases are limited by their size and, therefore, cannot accommodate the larger motherboard form-factors. For instance, you cannot put a standard ATX motherboard inside of a mini-ITX case or a micro-ATX case.
But, again, this is really the only standard that binds the different cases in a common case size together. What I mean by this is that, while all mid towers share the ability to hold standard ATX motherboards, not all mid tower cases have the same dimensions and feature sets. And, the same goes for the rest of the common case sizes.
Also Read: Which PC Case Size is Best for Your Next Build?
So, really, the main thing to consider when it comes to motherboard form-factor when you go to buy your case, is that you ensure that the motherboard you have chosen (or are planning on choosing) will fit inside of the case you are considering purchasing.
Of course, this can easily be accomplished by checking the case’s spec sheet and seeing which motherboard form-factors it can accommodate.
Clearance & Other Compatibility Issues
While the motherboard form-factors that a case supports are one type of compatibility issue that you will need to consider before choosing a case, you will also want to make sure that all of the other components you choose will fit inside of your case.
The most common clearance and compatibility issues to watch for when shopping for a PC case are:
- Graphics card length
- Air CPU cooler height
- Liquid cooling radiator size
Let’s dive into each of these three issues below…
Graphics Card Length
Typically, higher-end video cards are longer than budget-friendly video cards are. The longer graphics cards can cause clearance issues in some smaller cases.
While this is becoming rarer as A) graphics cards, on average, are getting shorter, and B) mid tower and smaller cases are starting to be built to accommodate longer graphics cards.
However, it is still an issue that persists. So, before you finalize your part list, you need to check the spec sheet of both your case and graphics card to check how long your card is and how much clearance for a graphics card your case has. If your case can accommodate graphics card lengths that exceed your graphics card, then you are good to go.
If not, you will want to look for a shorter alternative. And, if you’re looking to get a small form-factor case, you’ll likely want to consider going with a low profile graphics cards that are available (both Zotac and Gigabyte have mini versions available on even their higher-end cards.)
Air CPU Cooler Tower Height
Just like some graphics cards are longer than others, some air CPU coolers have taller heatsinks that other coolers. And, not every case is deep enough to accommodate the tallest air coolers.
Also Read: Do You Need a CPU Cooler for Your PC?
To ensure that the CPU cooler you have chosen will fit inside your case, again, just check the spec sheet of both the case and air CPU cooler you are considering. Your case’s spec sheet should specify how tall of a CPU cooler it can accommodate, and the CPU cooler you are considering will list its height.
If you’re limited on space and you don’t have the budget for a liquid cooler (or you don’t want one), one solution may be to use a low-profile air CPU cooler.
Liquid Cooling Radiator Size
Liquid cooling systems (whether AIOs or custom loops) utilize liquid to transfer heat from your processor to a radiator. The radiator has fans installed on it, which dissipates some of the heat from the radiator.
However, there is no single standard radiator size. In fact, radiators come in a variety of sizes.
And, just like how not every case can accommodate every CPU cooler and graphics card, not every case can accommodate every radiator size.
So, before you choose a liquid cooling setup (AIO or custom loop) to pair with your case, it’s important that you check your case’s spec sheet to ensure that the radiator that comes with your liquid cooler will fit inside of your case.
Another important thing to note is the difference between AIO coolers and custom liquid cooling setups. Custom liquid cooling setups require extra space for reservoirs and therefore, a case that supports larger radiators isn’t necessarily a case that will work for custom loops. Although, the two do typically go hand-in-hand.

A Computer Case’s Role in Cooling and Air Flow
While the biggest draw of PC cases is typically their aesthetics, cases do play a significant role in the cooling process of your computer. Keeping your components cool is obviously an important part of building and maintaining a computer. The cooler your components run, the longer they will typically last, and the fewer problems you will run into.
Computer cases contribute to (or hinder) the cooling process by the air flow they provide (or fail to provide). Your PC case will also determine what kind of CPU cooler you can get. (See the section above on clearance and compatibility.)
If you want to choose a case with high air flow and good cooling capability consider the following:
1. The case should have the ability to accommodate multiple fans at various locations in the case (front, back, top, side, etc.)
This doesn’t necessarily mean that the case you choose has to come with a bunch of fans pre-installed. Most cases only come with a few fans pre-installed (cheaper cases typically come with only one or two pre-installed).
But, budget permitting, you should try and choose a case that has the option to add multiple fans. And, it’s always a good idea to get a case that can accommodate fans on the front and back (or top) of the case so that you can intake air from the front, and then exhaust it out the back (or top).
2. The panels (front, side, and top) on a case also play a large role in air flow.
Cases that have grilled panels or grilled openings on their panels are ideal because the grill-design allows more air to flow into (and out of) the case.
On the flip side, cases that have solid front, top, side, and back panels restrict the air coming in and exiting the case because there is less of an opening for air to get into (or exit) the case.
So, when possible, try and choose a case that has grill panels, as that will increase the air flow in your case, which will, in turn, keep your components cooler.
3. Also, again, as we mentioned above, certain cases will not be able to accommodate certain CPU coolers and liquid cooling radiators.
And, while that doesn’t necessarily mean that those cases aren’t good options in terms of air flow and cooling, it does mean that they will have some limits on the types of coolers you can install in them. So, if you like the idea of getting an AIO cooler with an enormous 360mm radiator on it, but you really like a specific case that can only hold a 240mm radiator in it, you’re going to have to sacrifice one or the other.
3. Case Build Quality
Build quality is another important feature. Cheaper cases are built with lower-quality materials and, as a result, tend to show more dings and scratches, are less sturdy, have thinner panels, and will wear down more quickly.
On the other hand, higher-end cases typically have a much more solid frame and are thus more sturdy.
Of course, for some budget-oriented builders, there is no way around going with a cheaper case option. And, that’s completely fine. But just know that while a cheaper case may look cool and have some nice features, there likely had to have been some corners cut somewhere, and it is probably that they were cut on the materials and build quality of the case.
Check out these budget-friendly PC cases under $50.
4. Case Aesthetics (& Cable Mangement)
This is just my opinion, but I sincerely believe that if there weren’t so many cool computer cases to choose from, a lot fewer people would build their own computers. It might seem like a silly opinion—especially since cases have no direct impact on your system’s performance—but just imagine that the only case you could get was one of those basic-looking cases that cheap pre-built computers come in.
It kind of takes the fun out of building a computer a bit, right?
In any case, case aesthetics are important because most people want their case to look cool.
So, in this section, I’ll go over four different aspects of case aesthetics that you should consider before choosing a case:
Cable Management
In my opinion, there are three different types of people who will build computers.
- People who are incredibly particular about their cable management.
- People who do a decent job at cable management, but aren’t going to take it to the extreme.
- People who just don’t care about cable management.
For the first two types of people, choosing a case that is designed with cable management in mind is the way to go. If building a clean looking system is one of your goals, then doing your due diligence on cable management is a must. You can color coordinate all of your components, get a case with a tempered glass side panel, and fill your system with a bunch of RGB lights… but if you don’t clean up your cabling, your build isn’t going to look good.
While cable management is a bit of an art and people who excel at cable management can probably make the cabling look good in any case, having a case that has plenty of cable management options is going to go a long way towards helping you hide your cables in an efficient manner.
This is even more true for first-time builders who are likely going to be more focused on getting their computer assembled properly than they are on ensuring their cables are clean and hidden. The extra cable management features that some cases come with will make the process easier for first-time builders so they don’t have to worry about it as much.
Also Read: How to Build A Gaming PC (Step-By-Step)
Some cable management features to look for on prospective cases are:
- Plenty of holes and hooks/loops all over the case
- Rubber grommets around the holes to conceal the gaps
- Cases that have some depth behind the motherboard to accommodate large groupings of cables
- PSU shrouds are nice because they make cable managing with non-modular PSUs much easier. (And, they look really clean.)
See-Through Side Panels
If you want to build a nice-looking system, a case with a see-through side panel will help you show off the inside of your PC. And, if you take your time and do a good job managing your cables you can earn some serious credit among your non-techie friends for how cool your computer looks.
It’s important to note that not all side panels are made equal. Tempered glass side panels are your best bet. If you can avoid an acrylic see-through side panel, definitely do so. Acrylic is really easy to scratch. I’ve even left scratches on acrylic side panels just by using a cloth to try and wipe off the dust.
PSU Shrouds
I’m a big fan of the PSU shroud movement. In my opinion, PSU shrouds are a godsend for A) those of us who don’t have elite-level cable management skills, and B) those of us who are working with a tight budget and have to go with a non-modular power supply.
Also Read: Modular vs Non-Modular PSUs
With a case that doesn’t have a PSU shroud, and with a non-modular power supply, you could do every other aspect of cable management perfectly, but if you don’t have anywhere to hide the mess of molex and SATA power cables that are left over, your going to have a huge eyesore to look at inside of your case. With a PSU shroud, that mess is hidden by default.
Even if you do have a semi-modular or modular power supply, though, a PSU shroud helps provide a clean look that keeps the focus on your main components.
RGB Lighting
With RGB lighting being so popular, it’s no wonder that there are an ever-increasing amount of cases that feature RGB lights in some capacity. Of course, RGB fans and RGB led strips can be purchased separately and added to a case that doesn’t come with them. But, if the case already includes them, that’s less RGB lighting you have to pay for after the fact.
Just make sure that if you want a specific color scheme that the case does come with RGB lights and not just a specific color led light.
Which Case is Right for You?
There are literally hundreds of case options to choose between. The right case for your will come down to, first, how much you have to spend, and, second, the other components you have (or have chosen) for your build and whether or not they are compatible with the case you are considering, and, third, your personal preferences on some of the factors discussed above.
Heres is a breakdown of all of the parts you’ll need to build a gaming PC.
Ultimately, though, if you have read through this post, you’ll have a much better idea of what to look for when choosing a PC case that suits your needs.
Rating of cases for PC — TOP 18 models of 2021
Competently choose a case for your computer building to live up the terms of life of all components with a way to meet in the middle of the optimal temperature regime. We have prepared for you a rating of 18 best cases, according to different budget options and recognition: from cases for simple office machines, to wide and well-ventilated solutions that are suitable for gaming or professional work with media content.

Corsair 280X RGB Tempered Glass Black
This category has budget options up to 1500 UAH. The main benefit to them is the ability to expand the motherboard of a variable expansion. Office PCs usually have video integration or discrete cob level. There will be no high temperatures near the building, which means there is no reason to overpay for 4-5 installed fans for cooling, if you want to get a good landing for a few pieces.
Also, there are five models with a complete living unit. Sound so the power supply unit can be at a power of 350-400 W, which is quite practical for a computer of a similar class. Such a purchase can be allowed to be spared — the distribution of goods will become a trifle more expensive.
Rezone Case RCS101
Cheaper than a cardboard box! Ale, it’s hot, the buildings from the upper roztashuvannyam of the living block are to go for the simplest configurations. However, for Word and Excel adepts, there is no need for more. For a small price, we can accept the classic Midi Tower, in which it is easy to fit an ATX form factor board or a smaller one, with a complete 400 W PSU.
Easy to pick up from case. The USB port on the front panel is class 2.0, but in a similar budget it’s easy to fit in.

It is worth noting that the cooling system can be cooled up to 400 mm and allows expansion of a cold water cooling radiator, so it is possible to increase the overall cooling system with a turntable up to 120 mm (up to 140 mm in the case of cold winds).

Keep in mind that noise reduction systems can contribute to the efficiency of heating.
How to choose a computer case
Recommended case models
For those who don’t have time to read the whole article, I immediately give the recommended case models with a brief explanation.
The most common are Midi-Tower cases suitable for mounting ATX motherboards and smaller (Mini-ATX, Micro-ATX). They are great for most computers.
For an office computer (documents, Internet), it is best to purchase a case complete with a 400-500 W power supply. Among the quality power supply cases you can find on the market, I recommend AeroCool, Cooler Master, Zalman, Chieftec, Xigmatek, and ASUS (Vento). In this case, the most inexpensive AeroCool CS-1101 type with a 500 W PSU is suitable. Computer case AeroCool CS-1101 500W Black For an entry-level gaming computer (Core-i3 or Ryzen-3 + GTX-1050/1060), you can also take a case complete with a 500-600 W power supply of the same brands. As a minimum option, you can consider AeroCool V3X with a 600 W PSU. Computer Case AeroCool V3X Advance Devil Red Edition 600W For a mid-range work or gaming computer (Core-i5 or Ryzen 5 + GTX-1070), it is better to take a good power supply and a separate case separately. AeroCool, Zalman and Cooler Master cases are the best in terms of price/quality ratio. One of the most successful inexpensive models Zalman Z1 (Black and Neo). Zalman Z1 Black computer case For a powerful professional or gaming computer (Core-i7 or Ryzen-7 + GTX-1080), it is advisable to take a roomier case. It will allow you to place a long video card, a powerful cooler or a water cooling system and will provide better ventilation. Recommended brands AeroCool, Zalman, NZXT, Cooler Master, Thermaltake. Again, as a minimum option, I recommend AeroCool Aero-800. Computer case AeroCool Aero-800 If you want to understand why I recommend these particular models, to understand all the parameters of the cases, then read the article further.
You can download the program for calculating the required power of the power supply in the «Links» section.

Case with power supply
If you are building an office or home computer, you can save money and purchase a good case complete with a power supply.
3.1. Power supply capacity
Cases for office and home computers can be equipped with power supplies with a capacity of 300-600 watts. In small cases for media centers, the power of the power supply can be only 100-250 watts, which is quite enough for watching videos, but obviously not enough if you want to install a powerful video card in order to play on the TV screen.
A 400-watt power supply is enough for an office computer. For a home multimedia computer, the power supply should be 450-500 watts. For a powerful gaming computer, at least 600 watts is desirable.
3.2. Power supply capacity calculation
The power supply capacity can be calculated manually. To do this, you need to find the power consumption of all computer components on the manufacturers’ websites and add them up. To this amount, you need to add 15-30% for higher reliability and to avoid voltage drops at peak loads, to which video cards react very painfully.
But there is a better way! The power supply power can be calculated using the special program «Power Supply Calculator». It also allows you to calculate the required capacity of an uninterruptible power supply (UPS or UPS).
The program works on all versions of Windows with «Microsoft .NET Framework» version 3.5 or higher installed, which is usually already installed by most users. Download the program «Power Supply Calculator» and if you need «Microsoft .NET Framework» you can at the end of the article in the «Links» section.
3.3. Power supply configuration and location
Note the types and number of power supply connectors. As for its location, it can be upper or lower.
The lower position of the power supply is considered more progressive, but in general it does not matter. But if you get a large case without a power supply and its location is provided in the lower part of the case, then choose a power supply with longer wires, otherwise they can be connected with a stretch.
Read more about power supplies in the article «How to choose a power supply».
Case Manufacturers
Some manufacturers only produce cases without power supplies, some only with power supplies, and some make both.
5.1. Manufacturers of cases without power supplies
If you plan to purchase a power supply separately, then a high-quality case from one of the most popular manufacturers will be a good addition to it: Chieftec, Cooler Master, Thermaltake.
Not so long ago, well-known manufacturers of components for enthusiasts entered the computer case market: Corsair and Zalman, which I also recommend.
If you are looking for a more economical, but still high-quality case, pay attention to the trademarks: AeroCool and Antec.
It is worth noting that there is no obvious division between brands by price, when the cases of one brand were only expensive, and the other one was only cheap. Therefore, when choosing a housing, you can consider the housings of all manufacturers listed here.
5.2. Manufacturers of cases with power supplies
If you decide to purchase a case with a power supply, then a case made by Cooler Master or AeroCool is a good choice.
A more economical, but quite acceptable option would be to purchase a case of brands: Foxconn, FSP, InWin.
I recommend limiting yourself to the brands listed here, since they use power supplies of more or less acceptable quality.
Instead of preface
As in many areas, computer equipment is subject to strict standardization and typification. This not only allows you to achieve the required operating parameters from certified components, but also allows you to assemble the necessary configuration from a wide range of devices on the market by various brands.
Naturally, there is no perfect standard, just as there is no single «correct» frame size. Types and their characteristics are aimed, first of all, at ease of use. At the moment, there are 25 sizes of computer cases — both widely used and purely niche solutions.
The latter are the subject of interest of highly specialized specialists, so they were not included in our description. All types and you, friends, are likely to be uninteresting. And so, briefly and to the point.
Types and sizes of cases
Computer cases are divided into horizontal (Desktop) and vertical (Tower). But both of them can have different sizes.
6.1. Horizontal cabinets
Horizontal cabinets used to be used mainly in offices to save space and monitors were installed directly on them.
These cases can now be found in some supermarkets, but they are mainly used to assemble multimedia centers that can be placed in a TV stand.
Horizontal cabinets are available in the following types:
- Slim-Desktop — slim cabinet
- Full-Desktop — standard cabinet
6.
2. Tower cases
Today’s computers are mostly built using tower cases. Usually they are installed on a special stand or just on the floor.
Tower cases are of the following types:
- Micro-Tower — miniature case
- Mini-Tower — low case of legacy format
- Midi-Tower — the most common format
- Full-Tower — large case for gaming computers
- Super-Tower — extra large case for powerful computers and servers
For office and home computers it is better to use the most versatile Midi-Tower cases. For powerful gaming computers that install large video cards and coolers, it is advisable to use more spacious Midi-Tower or Full-Tower cases. They are better organized placement of components and ventilation.
Fractal Design Define S Black
With its clear shape and transparent side door, the case looks unusual and stylish. High-quality ventilation: two coolers, low noise, also suitable for liquid cooling. Convenient cable management. An impressive amount of interior space and an affordable price.
Fractal Design is a Swedish company well-known in Russia
Motherboard form factor
Depending on the size, the case can accommodate motherboards of different sizes. Usually, ATX format motherboards and less (MicroATX, Mini-ITX) can be installed in Midi-Tower cases. In Mini-Tower cases, you can install a motherboard no larger than MicroATX, and in cases for multimedia centers Mini-ITX. Full-Tower cases can accommodate large E-ATX and XL-ATX motherboards.
All cases have brackets for supported motherboard formats. Which motherboard form factors are supported by a particular case must be indicated on the website of the seller and the manufacturer of the case.
For office and home computers, I recommend purchasing a case that supports ATX motherboards, even if you purchase a smaller motherboard. This will provide more choice of motherboard in the event of a replacement, as well as the installation of larger components and better ventilation in the case.
Ease of maintenance
In this context, everything is simple — you want to be able to vacuum dust filters without dismantling the case.
Also, for the sake of ease of maintenance, I dismiss the LSS
The liquid cooling system will make the computer much more expensive and require additional fuss, otherwise a new life will start in the coolant, an incomprehensible slimy mass will clog the microchannels and (or) the liquid will leak / evaporate.
I have already spoken about the stove under the processor and I want to give a couple of examples where this problem is solved.
1) Chassis with motherboard rotated 90 degrees:
Convection and fans work together. In tests for cooling efficiency, this case showed very good results.
2) Horizontal layout of the motherboard
Everything is clear here — hot air rises from the processor and video card to the top. Components do not heat each other.
3) Flip cases
The motherboard is rotated 180 degrees, that is, the video card is located above the processor and no longer heats it.
4) You can use a riser to connect a video card
So the video card can be placed in the part of the case farthest from the processor and the components will heat each other less.
He is gone. But something came close to my idea of an ideal layout
Not an Apple fan, but I like the Mac Pro. There are only blowers and component heatsinks are installed in the airflow from them.
Someone is crowdfunding to raise money for a clone of this case, but they will not be able to implement the most important feature — flow radiators.
As a result, it will turn out like with fake Christmas tree decorations — they look like real ones, but they do not bring joy (cooling).
I don’t want to end the article on a sad note, so I’ll tell you about the options for solving the problem:
-
Place the case where it can’t be heard
No comment. A long cable to the monitor and a USB hub will allow you to take the system unit even to the balcony. Or in a home server room. At the same time, this will partially solve the problem with dust. Another thing is that such an opportunity should be taken care of even at the stage of repair.
-
Choose from available options
If you search, you can still find a case with decent dust insulation. There is no need to rely on soundproofing, so we choose the quietest components. With a lot of empty space inside, you also have to put up with it.
For myself, I chose a mATX case with a horizontal motherboard.
-
Do it yourself
You can do without the case and hang all the accessories on the wall. Of course, here you also need to choose quiet options for cooling the video card and processor. If you hang the motherboard with the connectors down, then the components will not heat each other, and convection will help cool. The dust problem will remain, but on an open stand everything is visible and easy to clean.
I didn’t do this because of laziness and having a curious cat.
-
Small-scale production
Here you can do everything yourself, but I did not find where you can get a suitable thermosyphon.
Used for cooling LED lighting systems, inexpensive. The width (which I managed to find) is up to 30 centimeters. The thickness of the base is from 6 millimeters. In some cases, it can be ordered already anodized.
This radiator profile can also be used as a cabinet wall.
Through the thermosyphon:
… install the motherboard with the processor.
We remove the standard cooling system from the video card and with the help of a riser, through a thermosyphon, we attach it to the same radiator. You are wonderful! Actually, not really. It confuses me that the contact of the thermosiphon and the radiator profile may be insufficient. Of course, here you also need to use thermal paste, but is this enough?
In addition, several fans can be installed from below to help with the load.
According to my estimates, a 30 x 30 cm radiator profile with low airflow should be enough for 300 watts of thermal power from the processor and video card.
That’s all, I hope this article will help someone.
PS
If someone knows how to find a ready-made thermosiphon, please write in a personal or in a comment.

Cooling system
From the point of view of cooling, cases with a metal grill front panel have proven themselves well. If you are building a powerful computer, I recommend paying attention to such models.
9.1. Fans and vents
Older cases used 80mm fans. This solution can still be found in some cheap models. It is desirable that the rear panel of the case provide for the installation of a 120 mm fan, as it is quieter and more efficient. One fan is usually included with the case and in most cases this is enough, but you can install additional ones if necessary.
Some more expensive cases may have additional fans in the front, side, top, and even bottom of the case. There may also be many ventilation holes. Such cases are intended mainly for powerful gaming computers and require a reasonable placement of quiet fans. For ordinary home computers, extra holes, especially in the top case cover, can allow excess dust to enter and sometimes even spill something.
9.2. Dust filters
Cases can also have dust filters, which is generally good, but requires regular cleaning or replacement, otherwise they will only interfere with cooling. In principle, they can be removed at any time or replaced with homemade ones.
Front panel connectors
The front panel of the chassis (front or side) can have various connectors for connecting external devices. It is desirable that on the front panel of the case there are 2 USB connectors and 2 audio connectors for connecting headphones and a microphone.
How convenient the location of the connectors will be for you depends on where and how the system unit will stand.
Horizontal
In our country, this type of case is not very popular among users, but in Western countries it has become widespread. The advantage is that this configuration takes up a little less space: the monitor can be placed directly on the system unit.
The most popular types would be:
- Desktop (desktop) — 533x419x152 mm;
- FootPrint (floor) — 408x406x152 mm;
- SlimLine (thin) — 406x406x101 mm;
- UltraSlimLine (ultra slim) 381x352x75 mm.
External bays
Almost all cases have 1 to 4 external 5.25″ optical drive bays. If you plan to install several of these devices, such as a Blu-ray drive and a cheaper DVD-RW drive for everyday work, then pay attention to this. Also, these compartments can be used to install control panels for various additional devices. Usually one such compartment is enough, but it is still desirable that there be several of them.
The case can have 1-2 external 3.5″ bays that were previously used to install a drive. Now they are not needed, but if there is such a compartment, then you can install a card reader for reading memory cards or an additional socket with some other connectors. But usually this is not necessary.
RAM, SSD and HDD — the first contenders for the title of «bottleneck»
There are still questions on the forums: «I have 4 GB of RAM (often also DDR2) and my toys do not start or slow down: … , what should I do?». After reading the tests, you can see that a modern PC requires a minimum of 8 GB of DDR4 memory! And this is if you do not play powerful games and do not draw in Photoshop or Corel. Otherwise, you need at least 16 GB DDR4. I must say right away that for most gamers 32 GB of RAM is not needed! Game tests show that they consume up to 12 GB of RAM. The exception is games in 4K resolution.
The next moment is the frequency of RAM and dual-channel mode. They are critical for Ryzen processors. At Intel, this dependence is not so pronounced.
It is not recommended to buy sticks of RAM from different manufacturers, they run the risk of simply not starting together, while individually they will work fine! If you still took the risk, then you need to check the coincidence of their frequencies and timings. There are already ready-made kits on sale, but they usually cost more than similar memory modules separately, and also almost always have beautiful heatsinks, which in fact are ordinary decoration.
Many memory modules can be overclocked, for example, 8Gb DDR4 2400MHz Crucial (CT8G4DFS824A) can easily go from base 2400MHz to 3200MHz. Overclockability is easiest to determine by reviews, and it does not always depend on the price tag. Most often, they overclock memory modules from Samsung (I chose Crucial due to the lower price).
Transferring games from HDD to SSD increases FPS. The most interesting thing is that this rule even works with online games, where a stable Internet connection is crucial.
If the paging file is located on the SSD, then this partially helps with a small amount of RAM.
Sometimes cheap SSDs are slower than HDDs (hard drives). This is due to the fact that they can be assembled from rejected components or returned from repair.
Previously, hybrid hard drives were actively sold, with an SSD for the operating system and an HDD for everything else. Now they are almost gone, because there is no point in them! They were a transitional solution, a thing of the past. In some stores, consultants may offer you to buy such a disc if it is lying around in their warehouse.
When buying an SSD, you should look at the volume, now it is at least 240 GB, the controller (affects the speed and service life), as well as speed tests and reviews. There is another interesting parameter — the declared resource, measured in Terabytes (TB). It shows how much information can be guaranteed to be written during the life cycle of the drive. Hence the important point for torrent lovers, it is not recommended to use an SSD for torrents, any hard drive is suitable for this purpose. You should not buy «noname» components from Ali or other stores. They are now actively advertised, but their reliability leaves much to be desired.
Internal bays
Most cases have 4-6 internal 3.5″ bays for conventional hard drives. Usually this is enough, but if you plan to install several disks, then please note that it is advisable to install them through one, i.e. leave an empty space between them. At the same time, if the case is small and the video card is long, then it may interfere with the installation of a second disk or they will have to be placed back to back one on top of the other.
Some mostly compact cases may have 2.5″ bays that can accommodate an SSD or laptop hard drive. In standard cases, you will have to purchase a special mount for this.
The most modern and sophisticated cases have one common 5.25″ rack with the ability to mount different disks in arbitrary places. For this, additional mounting frames are used, into which 3.5″ or 2.5″ discs are inserted. Such a frame can be installed anywhere in the rack, which is very convenient. But, such cases are more expensive and are intended mainly for professional and gaming computers.
Expansion Card Slots
ATX motherboard cases typically have 7 expansion card slots, while MicroATX motherboards have 4 expansion card slots to match the number of expansion slots on these motherboards. Smaller or larger cases may have a different number of slots. This is usually not a problem, but keep in mind that the number of slots on the case must be at least as many as the number of slots on the motherboard.
Case design
Various decorative elements can be used in the case design. The case may have a front door that covers all or part of the front panel, under which there may be an optical drive, a power button, additional connectors. This makes the appearance more aesthetic, but the use of elements behind the door is extremely inconvenient, since it will constantly have to be opened.
One of the side covers of the housing may have a transparent window. These cases are intended mainly for enthusiasts. If the system unit is assembled from powerful beautiful components, wires do not stick out anywhere, additional lighting is used inside the case and it stands in a conspicuous place, then all this may look interesting.
As for the illuminated fans, although it looks beautiful at first glance, it can annoy those around you. Think about where and how the system unit will stand and in which direction the light will go. He should not hit anyone in the eyes, especially in the dark.
Enclosure material
Most enclosures have a steel frame and front panel made of plastic or a combination of plastic and metal mesh.
Frame metal thickness may vary. In cheap cases, this is usually 0. 4-0.5 mm, such metal bends easily and the case can rattle. It is better to choose cases with a metal thickness of 0.55-0.8 mm.
Some more expensive cases are made from aluminium. Aluminum cases have a more solid appearance, but this has little effect on its other indicators.
Case color
As for the case color, black or black-and-silver cases are the most versatile, as they blend well with other computer devices, modern home appliances and interiors.
I don’t recommend purchasing cabinets with a glossy plastic panel, as it easily scratches, smudges, attracts dust and quickly loses its appearance.
But the most important thing is that you like the case. Then looking at it and pressing the power button you will get aesthetic pleasure.
Setting up filters in the online store
- Go to the «Cases» section on the seller’s website.
