After graduation, he worked in the non-profit sector for two years, after which, without changing the trajectory, he entered the Master in Smart City management (MSC) program. What are the benefits of continuing the educational track and who else might be interested in studying in the MSC program, Vladislav tells in an interview.

Many people associate the name «Smart City Management» with the installation of meters, the use of solar panels and other devices. Can you please tell us what the program is really about? nine0016
Smart city management is not only about smart technologies: smart houses, streets, safe roads, meters, cameras, etc., but smart global solutions in all areas, made with sustainability in mind. Change requires fundamental analytical work, for example, in order to anticipate the behavior of stakeholders (stakeholders), find common interests, bring them together and form the most successful decisions in urban planning. If you limit yourself to the introduction of know-how, you can miss a lot and thus come to unforeseen consequences. nine0003

For whom is such education interesting and useful?
In order to benefit from the program, one must be interested in urban development issues, green economy trends and information technology. All these topics are now relevant for our major cities and regions. A specialist from any field, with any background, including technical, will be able to find himself in the MSC program. Urban life is very diverse and requires interdisciplinary solutions to improve the quality of the environment. nine0003

Do GMU and MSC programs complement each other, do they overlap, or do they have different educational and career paths?
The Master’s program continues and complements the Bachelor’s degree. MSC is more focused on the problems of urban development and planning, here we are more often talking not about the state as a whole, but about specific specific things. Master’s research of each student is devoted to a specific problem of great social and social significance. nine0003

What are the career prospects for GMU or MSC graduates? Many believe that graduating from one or both of these programs is the only way to become a civil servant. Is it so?
GMU graduates work in commerce in a variety of areas: consulting, IT, sales. The programs of management and state and municipal government are similar: the main focus of education is directed to the techniques and concepts of management. In the GMU program, students are also taught how to apply these mechanisms and knowledge in the field of state and municipal government. My classmates are in great demand in the field of «government relations» — communications with public sector organizations. This is a promising direction. Big business often interacts with the authorities and needs specialists who understand the needs of society and the requirements of the state. My experience is the opposite, I worked for a non-profit organization. nine0003

Tell us about your experience. What did you do for two years after your bachelor’s degree?
I worked in the field of construction and housing and communal services. It was an invaluable experience of interaction both with private structures — for example, construction companies — and with public authorities, local governments, and regional governments. I faced tasks of a very different nature: I had to deal with both building standards and legal documents. Each day was different from the previous one. nine0003

Did you use the knowledge and skills you acquired in your undergraduate studies?
The ability to learn helped in the process of work — this is one of the most important skills that one can learn at GSOM SPbU, as well as the ability to act in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment, in conditions of limited time and information, in conditions of multitasking. GSOM SPbU develops soft skills well. I advise everyone to take advantage of this opportunity, because they will definitely come in handy after graduation from business school, regardless of the line of work. nine0003

Why did you decide to continue your studies?
I came to the need to complete the full cycle of education in the chosen specialty. In our world, you need to move faster and faster to stay in place. It is important to look for new opportunities for partnership and interaction with other people in order to solve complex problems together. For me, studying has become a way to look at what I do from a different angle — from the side of science. I am very glad that I made the right decision, although at first I did not intend to go to the magistracy. nine0003

Many people think that if you do not change the educational track, it will be boring to study. Is it so?
I do not agree with this opinion. There is an element of repetition, and it is needed to make it easier for people who come from other directions to integrate into the program. It was also useful for me to update my knowledge after a two-year break. Now training is gaining momentum and a lot of new material has appeared.

Smart city management is a very broad specialization. In what direction are you currently working in terms of science and research? nine0016
I study current trends in the field of data analytics and decision-making on the formation of policy based on the information received. This is a very strong course and it is needed for my master’s study, which is devoted to energy efficiency and energy saving in housing and communal services. This work combines my practical experience and theory.

What are your plans after the end of the program?
I would like to continue to work in the field of housing and communal services with a slight adjustment towards energy saving and energy efficiency. But I do not limit myself to this direction, time will tell. The approach will remain unchanged: to accumulate skills and competencies, to strive to apply them in the most successful way in order to benefit society. Postgraduate studies and research activities are also extremely interesting and promising, especially if you do this at GSOM SPbU. In general, there are a lot of development scenarios. nine0003

What is the most valuable thing for you at GSOM SPbU?
The most valuable element of GSOM SPbU is the community, the unique composition of students who come from different fields and exchange experiences while working together. At GSOM SPbU, the interaction of students is very well organized. This is largely the merit of the administrative staff, which is one of the elements of the community. Do not forget about the professional teaching staff and the continuous improvement of educational content. This is clearly seen in the Smart City Governance program — it is relevant and meets the current challenges of society. Constant adaptation of disciplines, courses, focus on results, on providing students with advanced knowledge and developing the most demanded skills from them — all this is very valuable. nine0003

GSOM SPbU environment is often said to be very competitive, and students are involved in the struggle for high scores. How much does it help or, on the contrary, hinder learning?
In the Master’s program, the competitive environment is not so strongly felt, because we interact in a narrower circle and are focused on teamwork. In undergraduate studies, healthy competition, which is dosed at the Graduate School of Management of St. Petersburg State University, serves as a performance driver. The roots of this approach come from the science of management. This is a positive experience that needs to be further developed. But if you look deeper, it seems to me that a person must compete not only with others, but also with himself: set ambitious goals and objectives and strive to outplay himself. nine0003

Make a checklist for the GSOM SPbU applicant. What qualities and ambitions do you need to have in order to maximize your potential at the Business School and after graduation?
I would note discipline, perseverance and constancy. This set of qualities allows you to achieve results in any field, not only in education. It is important to be in harmony with yourself: to understand why training or work is needed, to feel your interest and involvement — this serves as a catalyst for hard disciplined work. nine0003

A look through the «one window», or Prospects for business

Tatyana Zorina.

New Solutions Business Support Center

— I have been in business for more than a decade and during this period I have experienced different stages of business: from despair, burnout, routine to creating a management system for my successful business. Therefore, now I look at everything from a different angle, from the perspective of an owner and a businessman, and I understand that I can share my experience with other entrepreneurs in building a profitable business by building a working business system. So, no one calls me a theoretician — begins a dialogue Tatyana Vladimirovna .

— Tatyana Vladimirovna, tell us about the methods of your work?

— Our clients receive a holistic, integrated approach to doing business. We do everything «from invoice to report», and also perform functions of management accounting and the construction and implementation of business processes. To do this, we have all the necessary resources: knowledge, experience in various industries, software, a staff of specialists in various areas: economists, HR, lawyers, accountants, analysts, financial and tax consultants. nine0003

Our regulations for interaction with clients are built in the «one window» mode, the owner can resolve all issues within the walls of the Center. Entrepreneurs sometimes come with a feeling of gloomy hopelessness, problems are crushed by the iron grip of fatality. And they come out after the conversation unconditionally encouraged, with answers to a number of their questions, in our «window» they see a «light» that helps them find their way, a new direction in business development.

— How to save business when everything is collapsing: in the world, country, economy?! nine0133

— A favorite example of self-responsibility is an oxygen mask on an airplane. No one has a question why it is necessary to put it on first of all on yourself, and then on the child. If I myself am in order, then I can help those around me.

I act on the same principle, I provide security for my business, my team, in order to be able to help other entrepreneurs.

We try to convey to our clients that they need to remain calm, that we are nearby, in touch and monitor non-stop updates in legislation, reassure them and together think over a strategy of action in the current situation. nine0003

Of course, now many are concerned about the issues of mobilization and various legal subtleties associated with this. Our mission is to help the owners, called up for military service, quickly and correctly arrange the transfer of company management, maintain and increase the business while they are on the borders of the country. We become the guarantor of the well-established work of financial and managerial activities.

The most important thing is not to panic, because finances and their accounting require a cool head.

— What would you recommend to the heads of companies now? nine0133

In a crisis, a leader is a support, someone who creates a sense of security, a clear path. If the leader himself is confused and cannot predict his activities for at least some minimum period, then what kind of calmness and efficiency in the team can we talk about? Chaos, panic may begin and it will be difficult to keep the team in working mode.

Therefore, I repeat once again: it is important to calm down and, first of all, ask yourself questions, what has changed in the current conditions, where are we going to move, what are the assumptions about the future? And with some readiness, you can communicate this plan to others. If the manager is not ready to ask himself these questions, let alone find answers to them, then we come to the rescue — the Business Support Center. nine0003

— One of the key areas of your company is accounting services. Tell me, after what amount of revenue does the company need a chief accountant in the state?

— I have heard this question many times. It usually occurs when the owner (or manager) is not satisfied with the work of an accountant. You can change to another. But if the replacement does not help, then the matter is clearly not in the «soldier». Something is wrong inside the document management system and processes in general.

It is pointless to demand from an accountant that he has order, while not demanding the same from himself and the whole company as a whole.

And, having put the procedures in order, describing the regulations and implementing the mechanisms for their impeccable implementation, you don’t have to worry too much about where your accountant is: in the next office, at home, in the country or somewhere on the other side of the city in your office.

Therefore, we are for an integrated approach, so that the client’s company can move to a different stage of development.
