What is CineBench R11. 5 (11.529)?

An older version of very popular multi-platform CPU benchmarking tool. The benchmarks consists of modelling, rendering, animation tasks. It can be used to test single threaded and multithreaded performance of CPU. There’s also GPU benchmark available, which tests OpenGL capabilities (however this benchmark is rarely used due to how poorly results translate to anything tangible in practical scenarios). This is a synthetic benchmark and became famous for its scores translating well to most practical usage scenarios. Pretty much any processor improvement is well reflected in score. While it’s not widely known, R11.5 scores are actually nearly identical to later version R15 scores (if decimal point is ignored and scores of R11 test are increased by 10-20%), thus it’s easy to compare version R11.5 results with version R15 results. Although, Maxon never officially said that scores between R11.5 and R15 are interchangeable.

 

For reference, a Core 2 Quad Q8300 CPU with default settings scores 2. 77 points in multithreaded test and 0.74 points in single threaded test.

Cinebench is a software application that can be used to benchmark the performance of computer systems, particularly in terms of their processing power and graphics capabilities.

Getting Cinebench scores

Gamer test: Mac vs. Windows

It is known that for a long time gamers did not consider the Mac seriously as a gaming platform. However, after the transition of Apple to Intel processors and the increase in the share of the Mac in the market, game developers began to pay more and more attention to «apple» computers. However, despite recent gains, the Mac platform is still a long way from snatching the palm from the brainchild of Microsoft. MacWorld published a comparative test of the performance of two systems using popular computer games, and we will talk about its results in our today’s material.

Boot Camp was used for graphics performance testing to allow two operating systems to run on a Mac. Apple during the test presented Mac OS 10.6.4 with Snow Leopard Graphics Update; Microsoft participated in Windows 7 Home Premium Edition. Tested on four different Mac systems: 27-inch iMac with 2.66 GHz Core i5 processor, Mac Pro with quad-core 2.66 GHz Xeon processor, 13-inch MacBook Pro with 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, and 15″ MacBook Pro with 2.53″ Core i5 processor.

With the support of Valve, a demo version of the game Portal was created, which will have to use the graphics subsystem of each Mac. At the first level of the game, the testers carried out various actions: from jumping through an endless tunnel to receiving bullets from dozens of military robots. At the same time, they tried to manipulate the maximum possible number of objects. In addition, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Cinebench R11.5’s OpenGL test took part in the test (all included in the Speedmark 6.5 benchmark package).

The first problem that experts encountered was the screen resolution, or rather, the inability to run the 27-inch iMac monitor at 2560 x 1440 pixels. Although this resolution is supported by this computer, in reality, neither Call of Duty 4 nor Portal could ever get it to run at 2560 x 1440, as they automatically switched to a lower resolution. Luckily, they managed to «trick» the system by connecting a 27-inch LED Cinema Display to the iMac as an external monitor, and everything worked at the right resolution.

Who is faster?

After the results were obtained, the best scores for Mac and Windows were compared. The biggest performance gap was on the 13-inch MacBook Pro with a 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo (running at 1920 x 1200 pixels). On it, Windows 7, using the Portal demo as an example, showed a frame rate that was 38% higher than that of Mac OS X. At 1024 and 768 pixels, this gap narrowed slightly to 37 percent. Using a Mac Pro with a four-core 2.66GHz Xeon and the same game of Portal, Windows was again the winner, showing 20 percent more performance at 1024 x 768 pixels. At 19At 20 x 1200 pixels the gap was 24 percent, and at 2560 x 1440 it was 25 percent. The 15-inch MacBook Pro with a 2.53 GHz Core i5 did not stand out much from the crowd, on which Windows 7 overtook Mac OS X in Portal frame rate by 13% at 1024 x 768 pixels, by 24 percent at 1920 x 1200 pixels and 21% at 2560 x 1440.

The gap was smallest on a 2.66GHz Core i5 iMac. This is largely due to the graphics card ATI Radeon HD 4670 with 256 MB of memory. However, there are still noticeable differences, and they are not in favor of Mac OS X. The frame rate shown by Windows 7 when playing Portal outperformed Mac OS X by 10% at 1024 x 768 pixels, 1920 x 1200 pixels and 17 percent at 2560 x 1440 pixels.

Bottom line: Windows 7 outperformed Mac OS X pretty much everywhere except in one case: When using Call of Duty on a 2.66GHz Core i5 iMac, Mac OS X ran 2-3 percent faster than Windows 7.

After updating the graphics drivers

It is worth noting that Mac OS X results would not have been so bad if the testers had installed graphics driver updates for the system from the very beginning. Recall that these updates, which became available in August, helped to significantly improve the graphics performance in Snow Leopard.

We tested every Mac before and after installing the update, and found that the most significant effect this update had on graphics performance was on a Mac Pro with a 2.
