Review and test CORSAIR iCUE h215i ELITE Capellix — i2HARD

Powerful and beautiful CORSAIR 280mm CBO with ARGB controller and bright Capellix LEDs.

The CORSAIR water cooler lineup has been updated with the iCUE h215i ELITE Capellix. This is a fairly efficient cooling system with a 280 mm form factor radiator and long tubes, which is well suited to top-end processors with a standard TDP of 100 W and higher. The model is equipped with large 140 x 25 mm ML RGB Series fans, which are controlled by PWM. Special attention in iCUE h215i ELITE is paid to the backlight. Here are branded bright Capellix LEDs. In total, there are 33 of them in the device, which are installed in the cover of the water block.

Equipment

The CORSAIR iCUE h215i ELITE Capellix comes in a standard bright black and yellow box with color printing.

The model comes with two 140×25 mm ML RGB Series fans, an RGB controller with 6 4pin fan connectors and a hub for 6 devices (iCUE Commander CORE), as well as a replaceable white pump cover panel (very useful when installed in cases with a white interior ). In addition, there are three sets of fasteners for all popular sockets and a detailed user manual.

The kit is quite good, the only pity is that there is no separate tube with thermal paste — you will have to be content with the one that has already been applied to the sole of the water block. Unfortunately, with this solution, the thermal paste often dries up and in the end it turns out that it would be better if it were not there at all. With the premium positioning of this CBO and the corresponding cost, this is an unfortunate drawback.

Appearance and construction

CBO CORSAIR h215i ELITE is made in the classic key for factory cooling systems: a black aluminum radiator, rather long tubes — 380 mm. The pump housing and the default panel on the lid are also black. At the same time, the radiator has impressive dimensions — 322x137x27 mm, so when choosing a model, you need to be careful — not all cases have enough space for it.

The radiator is made in a minimalist «angular» design, like the pump housing. The density of the ribs here is standard — about 20 FPI with a thickness of 27 mm. The seats on the radiator are for two 140 mm fans.

At the ends, the radiator is covered with solid metal plates, and a small CORSAIR logo is applied on the sides. Pipe fittings are metal, fixed. The material of the tubes is a special dense rubber enclosed in a protective braid.

The body of the water block is an octagon made of matte black plastic with a removable top panel that serves as a diffuser for Capellix LEDs.

This panel is held on by 4 hex screws (included in the kit). If desired, you can change to the «inverted» version — it is more suitable for white or light cases, and also transmits more light from the diodes.

The tubes are connected to the water block with L-shaped swivel fittings. Two cables leave the top part: one 3pin — for connecting the pump to the motherboard, the second — for connecting to the ARGB controller.

The pump is capable of accelerating from 2.200 to 2.650 rpm; In the settings, you can switch three levels of speed. The water block pump gives a flow of up to 0.82 l / min.

The sole of the water block is copper, fastened with 8 screws. The thermal paste has already been applied. We were lucky with the copy — the paste did not dry out. The sole is polished, but not too polished; cutter tracks are slightly visible.

CORSAIR iCUE h215i ELITE Capellix comes with two 140x25mm ML RGB Series fans (marked RWF0042). They have a fairly high-quality backlight, and the white plastic of the blades performs well as a diffuser.

The fans do not have anti-vibration pads and can be PWM controlled via the iCUE app from 750 to 1750 RPM. The fans have two connectors: one is for connecting to the controller’s RGB hub, the second is a standard 4pin.

They can be fastened to the radiator with screws from the kit — for some reason they are too long: so that when the screw is fully screwed in, the end of the screw removes the radiator fins, which, in theory, should not be.

Controller, software and RGB lighting

To control the backlight, the CBO comes with an iCUE Commander CORE controller with 6 connectors for connecting RGB devices and a hub for powering 6 4pin fans.

The water block is connected separately, from the end of the controller. To attach it to the case there are a couple of strips of 3M tape.

The controller is powered by the only standard SATA, and connected to the motherboard with a USB connector, which is very convenient — it becomes unimportant to have separate RGB connectors on the board, especially considering their diversity.

To control the CORSAIR iCUE h215i ELITE Capellix, you will need to download the latest version of the iCUE application from the official website, after which you will have access to efficiency settings, as well as backlight customization.

The speed of the pump and fans is set either in three modes, or by PWM within the range of 40-100%, there is also an excellent “zero speed” function that can completely turn off the rotation of the fans.

For lighting, there are interesting modes that are not found in other manufacturers, and it is also possible to configure the Capellix LED zones separately — they are clearly displayed in the application.

When the panel is removed from the water block cover, it is clearly visible that the backlighting turned out to be very detailed, the LEDs are located tightly, so that clear sequences can be arranged. Effects look different on black and white panels.

The backlighting of the fans turned out to be very high quality too. Since the LEDs are located almost at the axis, their point light is not so noticeable, but the scattered light just gently spreads through the blades.

Overall, the CORSAIR iCUE h215i ELITE Capellix deserves the best ratings for lighting. It looks great thanks to the smoothness, a large number of LEDs, and not ordinary, but brighter branded Capellix LEDs. Adds variability and the presence of a replaceable light water block panel along with a large number of interesting modes.

Let’s get back to the iCUE application. In addition to highlighting options, it has a service for alerting critical events in the system, which you can set yourself. There is also a standard system of device profiles for various applications.

In a separate tab, you can create a dashboard with the desired parameters for tracking, and there is also an OSD display service with a list of popular games.

Assembly and testing

For the CORSAIR iCUE h215i ELITE Capellix tests, let’s assemble a system based on an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X processor with a base TDP of 105W. For a greater load on the CBO, we will overclock it to a frequency of 4.1 GHz, simultaneously raising the voltage on the cores, and thereby increase the TDP to about 130 W, according to OCCT.

Assembly

To begin with, let’s briefly talk about mounting the CBO on the AM4 socket. The design of the water block clamp is quite simple. The necessary brackets are inserted into the slot behind the base of the sole (included are 3 sets for all popular sockets), after which the installation takes place directly, since we do not need to apply thermal paste.

Specifically, in the case of AM4, you will need a standard native backplate and fasteners — without it, you will not be able to install the CBO. The process itself takes place literally in three steps: we put the necessary brackets on the water block, after which we hook the guides to the native AM4 fasteners and wind the pressure heads on top.

The print of the thermal paste turned out to be quite even, the pressure is good, however, due to only two points of support, the paste was not distributed over the entire area of ​​\u200b\u200bthe lid. However, this is easy to avoid.

Tests

So, let’s go directly to the tests. We will use OCCT 8.0.1 tests as a stress load, and AIDA64 Extreme package and CORSAIR iCUE native software for temperature monitoring.

To begin with, let’s check the level of noise created by one pump of the water block. There are three speed levels in iCUE: Extreme, Balanced and Quiet — let’s check the level for each of them. Measurements were taken from a distance of about 50 cm with the case walls open.

The results show that at the minimum speed (2270 RPM) the pump is almost inaudible, in balanced mode it can already be heard in an open case, and at the maximum 2700 RPM it can already stand out against the background of the system in idle (which, of course, is difficult to imagine in real conditions).

Let’s separately check the noise level created by the 140 mm fans on the radiator. The measurement method is the same.

Here the results are predictable for large fans without vibration isolation at the points of contact with the radiator. However, at maximum speed they showed about 52 dBA, which is not so bad. In addition, they are unlikely to work in this mode. And in the range of 750-1300 RPM (40-70% PWM), they are quite quiet — no more than 43.6 dBA.

Let’s move on to the most important thing — testing the cooling efficiency. As we remember, the CBO is installed on a Ryzen 7 2700X overclocked to 4.1 GHz, the TDP of which can be considered equal to about 130 watts. Let’s compare first the different fan speed levels at the minimum pump speed, and then the different pump speeds at the minimum fan speed. Temperature measurements were carried out with the walls of the case closed.

The results show that the dependence of the processor temperature on the pump speed is minimal, the difference between 2270 and 2700 RPM is only 1°C (it can be noticeable only at high temperatures). Thus, it would be most logical to use the Quiet mode of the pump, and then it can be considered almost silent (34.2 dBA). In Extreme mode, it is somewhat noisy.

At 100% fan speed (1750 RPM), the processor managed to warm up to only 54 ° C — this is an excellent result, showing the high potential of the CORSAIR iCUE h215i ELITE Capellix CBO. Even at the minimum speed (750 RPM), the Ryzen 7 2700X did not heat up above 61 ° C, although 130 watts of heat dissipation is not that small. Thus, the conclusion suggests itself that for all popular desktop processors, this CBO will be enough with a large margin, even if you plan to overclock the chip. The model will also behave well with Threadripper sTR4 processors with 180+ W TDP, but as for the sTRX4 with 280 W, the power is unlikely to be enough for comfortable work — it is better to look at even more powerful three-section CBOs.

Total

In general, CORSAIR iCUE h215i ELITE Capellix will be an interesting option for those who have powerful processors and would not mind increasing their TDP by overclocking, while focusing on the low noise level of the CBO and low speeds in the “cruising” mode, as well as those who, in addition to the above, are important and good bright lighting.
