Dayco vs gates timing belt: Gates vs Contitech vs Dayco – Which Timing Belt Is Best? – IDParts Blog – Diesel News, Info and Guides

Dayco Vs Gates Vs Continental

It is important to regularly maintain your vehicle to keep it running smoothly and to avoid costly repairs down the line. One key component of regular maintenance is replacing the timing belt. Timing belts are typically replaced every 40,000 to 60,000 miles, so it’s important to know which brand to trust.

So, what are the best timing belt brands, and how do you pick one? As per our experience and research, Dayco, Gates, and Continental (also known as Contitech) are among the best brands. But how do these three big players of the Automotive timing belt compare with each other, and which one has the edge? To help you decide we’ve put together a comparison of Dayco vs. Gates vs. Continental to help you decide.

Dayco Vs. Gates

Dayco and Gates. Both brands offer high-quality products backed by years of experience and research. So, which one should you choose for your vehicle?

Here’s a quick comparison of Dayco and Gates timing belts:

Price

To start, let’s look at each brand’s prices. Dayco timing belts are typically cheaper than Gates timing belts. However, this does not mean that Dayco belts are of lower quality. They generally are just as good as Gates belts, if not better.

Built Quality

Dayco timing belt is made from a high-strength, heat-resistant Neoprene rubber material designed to withstand high-performance engines’ rigors. It also features a reinforced tooth profile that is engineered to resist wear and tear. As for the Gates belts, they are made with Nitrile, a  synthetic rubber compound that provides superior resistance to wear and tear, as well as oil and heat.

The Dayco belt also had a slightly different profile than the Gates belt. The Gates belt has a rounded profile, while the Dayco belt has a more squared-off profile. Though it doesn’t make that much of a difference in performance, it’s something to keep in mind.

Design

The Dayco belt was a little bit thinner than the Gates belt. The thinner belt means less surface area for the engine’s power to grip onto. This results in less power being transferred to the wheels, making the belt more susceptible to slipping.

Warranty

One major difference between the two brands is the warranty. Dayco offers a longer warranty on their timing belts than Gates does. Gates Timing Belt such as  Roadmax™ MV belts come with a meager 30.000 miles warranty, while Dayco timing belt’s warranty is 125,000 miles, the highest warranty coverage you can get for a timing belt.

Dayco Vs. Continental

Price

Regarding price, Dayco belts are typically slightly more expensive than Continental belts. However, it’s important to remember that prices can vary depending on the specific model and size you’re looking for.

Built Quality

Dayco belts are made from Neoprene rubber, while Continental belts are made from high-quality Rubber and polyurethane. Both materials are designed to withstand high temperatures and extreme tension, so you can rest assured that either brand will do the job.

Design

Continental timing belts feature a unique tooth design that makes them more durable than other brands. The belts are resistant to oil and heat, so you can be sure they’ll last for a long time. But the main downside of Continental timing belts, when compared to Dayco belts, is that they tend to stretch more over time, which can cause them to slip or break.

Warranty

Dayco offers a stunning warranty of 125,000 miles on all its products, while Continental offers a  60,000 miles warranty. Another important difference is that Dayco offers a warranty on labor costs incurred for replacing a defective product, while Continental does not. This can be significant cost savings if you need to have a professional mechanic install the new part.

So, when it comes to warranty coverage, Dayco wins hands-down over Continental.

Gates Vs. Continental

Price

Continental belts are usually less expensive than Gates belts. However, they’re not always made from the same high-quality materials. This means that they might not last as long as a Gates belt. But if you’re on a budget, Continental is a good choice.

Choosing between Gates and Continental timing belts comes down to personal preference. If you want the best quality belt, go with Gates. But if you’re working with a tight budget, Continental is a good option.

Built Quality

Gates Timing Belts have a higher tensile strength than Continental Timing Belts and a higher resistance to stretching than Continental Timing Belts. As a result, Gates timing belts are less likely to break over time.

Continental timing belts are made from a high-strength material to withstand high temperatures and heavy loads, but they are not as durable as Gates belts.

Warranty

Although Continental belts are slightly behind when compared to Gates belts in terms of built quality or durability, when it comes to warranty, Continental belts do have the edge. Continental belts offer 60,000 miles of warranty coverage, while Gates belts come with 30000 miles of warranty coverage.

Final words

The timing belt is responsible for ensuring your engine’s pistons and valves are in sync. If the timing belt were to break, it would cause significant engine damage and could leave you stranded on the side of the road.

So, which belt is better, Dayco vs. Gates vs. Continental? In my opinion, it’s a close call. All of these belts are good quality, and they all have their pros and cons. Most importantly, Dayco, Gates, and Continental have slight differences that make them suitable for different purposes.

If you’re looking for a belt that’s a little thinner and quieter, go with the Dayco belt. But if you’re looking for a belt that’s a little thicker and has a better grip, go with the Gates belt. Lastly, the Continental belt is a better choice if you need a more durable belt and resistant to wear and tear.

Gates vs Dayco belts: Where are they produced?

Now from curiosity, you might have wondered where the Gates and Dayco are made. Well, Gates makes their serpentine belt and other related products in Arkansas, USA. Yet, they are planning to broaden their product line in Europe and China.

“An official statement from a year ago (here) states the resulting rollout worldwide. It will be the first in Europe, after that, Chinese offices to come.”

If you ask who makes Dayco belts and where are Dayco belts made? Then you are getting your answer here. American parts supplier Mark IV produces Dayco drive belts products. They fabricate their product mostly in China and Mexico.

An important note: Belt dressing and EPDM serpentine belts

There is an important note for you if you don’t want to ruin your new belt. As serpentine belts are EPDM material constructed, so don’t dress your belt on them. If you do so, the rubber compound will get swell that will damp your dressing.

If your dressing is damping, your belt will create noise. As the surfaces of the ribs are getting dried, nothing can stop the chirping of your belt. And your problem will begin.

If you want to minimize the chirping problem of your belt, you have to change your belt. Otherwise, you have to tolerate the noise, and that will cause a problem for you.

Dayco themselves warn of this on their official site

What is a serpentine belt?

A serpentine belt is a single as well as a continuous belt that is used in an automotive engine. An idler pulley or a belt tensioner guides the belt.

Gates vs Dayco timing belts: Gates’ timing belt kits are popular for its thicker construction and longer performance. It is highly resistant to harmful contaminants such as oil, chemicals, etc.

Dayco vs Gates tensioner: Both the Dayco and Gates tensioner are perfect for your vehicle. But, the Dayco tensioners are a little bit more expensive than the Gates. Yet, there are a bunch of plastic parts in the Gates tensioner.

Gates vs Dayco hoses: Gates achieved its popularity over Dayco in terms of Radiator coolant hose. To know the accuracy of Gates hoses, you have to learn the Gates hose cross reference guide. Some customers complain about Dayco that their belt is too short of installing.

Gates belts: Gates offer their automotive V-belts for all of the American vehicles. The Gates belts are resistant to heat and harmful contaminants. Besides, it exceeds the OEM quality.

Gates tensioner review: The gates belt tensioner provided the best performance in your power transmission system. It performs even better than the factory one.

Dayco belts: Dayco belts are famous because of their automotive power transmission and the cooling system components. They offer the super flexible V-belt that will increase the airflow around the belt.

Gates belts review: The Gates offers good quality and heavy-duty belt. They are heat and crack resistant. If you look over Gates vs OEM belts, you will find that they have thicker construction than the OEM belts.

Which timing belt is better to choose

Popular brands of timing belts

The day comes, and every Russian car owner asks the question “what timing belt to buy?”, Because the market is replete with goods of foreign and domestic production.

When choosing a belt, they are guided by its type (toothed or wedge-shaped) and geometry (width, length or center interval).

Width is given in mm or inches, center distance is given in mm and inner belt length is mainly in inches.

Usually the choice of timing belt rests on the name of the manufacturer.

The most solid specimens are produced:

Gates,

Bosch

,

Dayco,

Contitech.

The last brand is the most common. This Belgian concern makes belts for drive gears of special equipment, internal combustion engines and is their main supplier to the assembly shops of the global automotive industry.

German Contitech and Bosch, in addition to the main range, produce drive units, air suspension parts, and other auto components.

Italian Dayco specializes in the production of drive belts and roller bearings.

How to choose a timing belt?

It is better to buy belts from an authorized dealer. In his catalogs, they go under the brand of the automobile plant, and not the RTI plant, but they are original.

For example, for Cadillac products are presented with the General Motors brand under their own catalog code, although in fact their place of origin is Gates Corporation.

This belt is 20-30% more expensive than a belt directly from Gates. However, in the Russian Federation, authentic products of this kind with the designation of a real manufacturer are not for sale.

That is why the car is equipped with a Gates-marked part before entering the series, and the analogue replaced during the warranty service is cataloged as a GM product.

In this regard, there is an opinion among car enthusiasts that samples of the highest class are supplied for assembly, and mediocre quality is not exported.

Why overpay?

This circumstance allows you to use a more accessible version of the selection. If the car was equipped from the very beginning with, say, a thing from Contitech or Gates, or it is known for sure which brands the manufacturer uses, there is no need to buy the original at the dealership.

It is enough to change it for the same wear-resistant analogue of a legal supplier company. It has long been proven by experience that such products serve no less time than the original.

Products of the listed brands are considered to be tested, coping well with their technological functions, successfully working out the prescribed.

You can, of course, take a chance and not listen too much to the opinion of experts, immediately stopping at a suitable (in your opinion) option, but in the future, only blame yourself.

About fake timing belts

There are quite a few fakes in free retail trade (although fakes are rare among the «officials», but still, by some miracle, they penetrate there too). Sometimes traders (especially small merchants of the Lipetsk car market or debutant distributors) can be mistaken on this score and sincerely assure that they are offering the original, besides advertising it.

Take the same Gates, which for some time now has been producing a reinforced belt with an extended service life. The annotation for this product says: it is allowed to operate it 3 times longer than competitors’ products. The promotional brochure mentions that Gates uses nitrile (HNBR and HSN) instead of neoprene (CR, chloroprene), which is the base material for the range of rubber products.

Don’t be fooled!

As you know, it is quite hot under the hood, and at the same time, the nitrile drive train remains in optimal condition and does not crack from temperature contrast (heating and freezing in the cold season).

In addition, these products are not sensitive to the effects of fuels and lubricants, as well as technical chemical solutions.

Thanks to such super properties, the manufacturer promises extended warranty conditions that reliably ensure the prescribed service life (if the belt is correctly installed and adjusted).

But all the insidiousness of a fake, visually similar to the original, lies in the fact that it is cast not from expensive nitrile, but from the same neoprene, and sometimes even substandard.

In the meantime, the client believes that he has acquired a branded counterpart, as a result of which the prestige and business reputation of the counterfeit brand suffer, and there are problems with the image.

From selection to replacement

Sometimes «belt with rollers» repair kits are sold, which we recommend to purchase, because it will cost less than each element separately.

Practice shows that the resource of the rollers is often not enough for one more belt life, so it is better to change both at the same time. The belt must be mounted exclusively on a cold engine using special tools.

Please note that in 70 cases out of 100, an inept performer of the operation is to blame for the imminent cliff. According to the hardness of the belt according to Shore, the mentioned parameter should correspond to 63-67 units, and the larger it is, the more the belt “dupes” in the cold (and winters in Lipetsk are cold).

In general, it is better not to save on components, because the deterioration of a handicraft or product of dubious origin in many cases turns into a repair of the power plant.

Timing belts: which is better to choose?

So, the question «which timing belt is better?» largely trivial. As a basis, you can take the message that the most acceptable way out is to equip with an original product or a reliable copy.

With the latter option, you should additionally ask and check whether the spare part is branded.

It is characteristic that the appearance of the belt, packaging in such cases may not cause concern (sufficient level of printing, application of a serial code, the presence of holograms).

As you can see, there is no unambiguous algorithm for determining the most suitable belt.

If we turn to statistics, then in terms of the number of sales in the former republics of the USSR, the rating is as follows:

Gates.

Contitech.

Dayco.

Bosch.

If even after that you are tormented by the question of which timing belt to put on, then it makes sense to seek advice from the portal avtoritet48.ru, whose administration is based in Lipetsk.

Which timing belt is better — Autoworld

Which timing belt is better?

If you found this article, you are definitely on the right track. As great minds have said, asking the right question is half the answer, or something like that. Whatever car or engine you have, the abundance of timing belts on the market is crazy and there are a lot of alternatives, but do they all have the same technical characteristics and are safely interchangeable? — No, and very much not.
Let’s start from the leaders of the drive belt world and go down to the bottom.
The main manufacturers and suppliers of timing belts, generator, power steering, air conditioning compressor drive, water pump for car conveyors are … Continental, Dayco, Gates. This is the cream of society, but there are other decent guys, namely Bosch and Ina.
The first three are wonderful, their belts run the declared resource and even more, of course, subject to tension, no contact with oil or antifreeze and all that stuff (well, you understand). But there is one caveat — fakes, counterfeit or «Chinese» (historically, our people do not like low-quality «Chinese»).
All three are mercilessly forged, and if you think that it is very difficult to buy a fake, then … you are a romantic. No, there are a lot of fakes and every year they get better and better in appearance, thus it becomes simply impossible for an inexperienced person to distinguish a fake.
5 years ago we filmed the first video reviews of spare parts, including timing belts. The fakes were terrible — crooked inscriptions, disgusting workmanship, a lot of jambs in general. Watch any of the latest videos of 2020 — a whole new level. I recommend that you familiarize yourself with our work:

Top belts have always been counterfeited and will continue to be counterfeited because they are the best. Yes, this is already clear to everyone, and what happens? Install a belt from another manufacturer, it is probably not forged. Of course they don’t fake it, but the belt itself can be rubbish. I do not want to study the structure of carbon atoms, what is contained in the rubber of timing belts, what is its content, how the threads of the court are braided and all this nonsense.
I repeat, if you buy a timing belt, then only the best brands, yes, there is a chance of a fake, but it’s better than buying a pig in a poke.
We went down to the bottom, let me list low-quality, little-known, dubious, and most importantly problematic belts. Problematic ones are those that are torn, stretched and go much less than the stated period. This list is many times larger than that trio:
AT — allegedly a Czech manufacturer, an ordinary low-quality China in a beautiful package;
LSA — the same as AT, only «Slovakia» will be written on the package. Well, yes, they showed creativity.
Zollex — oh God… it’s hard to say what’s normal about this brand
Aurora — cheap Chinese, the inscription «made in Poland». I am not against these inscriptions, but this is done in order to get into trust, ala European product. In fact, even some of the TOP 3 belts are made in China and they run great. But definitely not Aurora, Zolex and further down the list.
Hort, SKL, Finwhale, Trialli …. when will these «producers» end?!

Ina and Bosch timing belts are pretty good, especially Ina. Quite often, instead of the original belt or Gastes-Conti, people put Inu and everything works fine. Ina is a manufacturer of excellent bearings, and, accordingly, timing rollers. With Bosch belts, the situation is slippery — Bosch simply does not make some belts, but simply repackages Conti, Gates, Daiko, etc. In a sense, a good lottery.
As for belts for VAZ cars, and not only VAZ, you can add Lanos, Aveo, Nexia, Renault Logans, etc. a good Russian manufacturer of rubber products — BRT, but … sometimes their price is not quite adequate and competitive. And today, Gates and Continental belts are cheaper.
