Representatives of the uTorrent torrent client do not support installations of third-party programs that are invisible to users, but they consider the mission of Epic Scale, whose application contained a bitcoin miner, to be useful.
According to one uTorrent employee, the company stopped releasing the Epic Scale version of its client on the afternoon of Friday, March 6, after a massive flood of complaints.
He clarified that only 6% of Windows client users who installed it between mid-January and March 6 received this version.
All user complaints were related only to the fact that together with the uTorrent torrent client, the Epic Scale bitcoin miner application was installed completely invisibly. At this point, it is not known whether Epic Scale required a hidden installation as a partner or whether this was an initiative of the creators of uTorrent themselves.
Representatives of uTorrent said that affiliate offers are one of the main ways for the project to make money, provided that their program is distributed completely free of charge. Representatives from BitTorrent developer emphasized that their policy prohibits the installation of third-party services discreetly, and even the uTorrent installer application itself makes hidden installations impossible.
Anyway, uTorrent representatives apologized, but did not explain the reason why Epic Scale was installed without any notification.
