This self-sufficient program is useful if you’re using applications that have heavy multimedia elements.

These days a lot of high-speed multimedia and rich gaming software simply can’t be used on older computer set ups. This is where runtimes like DirectX comes into play. It’s bundled as part of standard Windows OS but you do still need to keep an eye out and make sure it’s updating continually to reliably run your rich audio, 3D animation and full colour graphic files. Even some videos now rely on similar programs to help them function at full capacity.

If your DirectX is lagging behind the times, there are good chances that some the above will stop functioning as reliably. It’s also possible that your audio and video playback abilities will become affected. If you’ve checked and you’re not running the most recent version it’s an easy problem to fix: just download the update for free.

DirectX is compatible with Windows 2000, 2003, XP, 7 and Vista operating systems and it cannot be uninstalled so you may want to do a full back up or set your restore point before installing.

Pro’s: Feature and security updates released as required, multiple language support including Chinese, Czech, Russian and Swedish

Con’s: Pay attention to the option extras as you’re installing it, it automatically downloads some aspects you don’t need to run the program (ie search toolbars)

Conclusion: Runs silently in the background, various file types will draw on DirectX support if required when you open them. It’s a little irritating that it will install a search toolbar if you forget to deselect during install but then again, freeware needs to be paid somehow. Worth taking the time to install for the bother it could save you down the line.

DirectX 12 is the latest version of DirectX, a set of application programming interfaces required for multimedia, video, and game programming.

If DirectX is already installed on the OS, it will be updated automatically every time Windows checks for updates. However, your system may be running previous versions of DirectX.

This can happen because certain programs prevent you from reinstalling the latest version, or because the update process fails when updating/reinstalling Windows 10.

First, you need to check which version of DirectX your OS is using. To do this, press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard, type dxdiag in the Run box, and press Enter.

If DirectX 12 is not listed and since there is no separate package for this version, we recommend the following solutions.

    1 Check for updates

    1. Open the Start menu and select « Settings».
    2. Select Update & Security .
    3. Click Check for updates .

Windows usually updates automatically. But if any updates are missing, this action should resolve the issue. Wait for the process to complete and try again to see the DirectX version.

2 Run the DirectX Runtime Installer for End User

Reinstall DirectX using the DirectX Web Installer for End Users available from the Microsoft Download Center to attempt to repair missing files, if any.

Check for updates again and see if the problem is fixed. If you’re still having trouble installing the graphics component correctly, check out this dedicated article that lists a few alternatives.

3 Use the SFC tool for missing files

    1. Type Command Prompt on the taskbar and click Run as administrator.
    2. Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
    3. Wait for the results.

This scan may take several minutes. SFC is a built-in tool that is supposed to repair any corrupted files on the system or install missing ones after an incorrect OS installation.

    4 Perform a clean boot

    1. Type System Configuration in the taskbar and select Run as administrator.
    2. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, and then select Disable for all.
    3. On the Startup tab, open the Task Manager and disable all items .
