Reddit — Dive into anything
I recently bought a GTX 970 used on Facebook marketplace to upgrade an GTX 770. I have bought countless graphics cards from Facebook and have never had any issues. This one was intended to go to my brother.
When I first wanted to boot up with the new GPU I plugged in DP for the main monitor. When that showed no signal I went for DVI on the second monitor assuming it was the lack of drivers. Once I got the drivers installed I plugged in the main monitor again for it still to display «no signal.» I used an HDMI cable instead, changed the input on the monitor and still the same message. I thought this was suspicious and opened Nvidia control panel. Control panel shows both monitors connected, the second monitor with DVI and the Main with HDMI. This was suspicious to me, The computer knows the correct monitor is plugged in, sees it, can read information from it, but will not send a signal to the monitor.
I initially thought this was the cable. So I tried a Display port cable, Didn’t work. Same symptoms. Shows up in Control Panel but no display. Maybe it’s the monitor. Plugged in DVI from the graphics card to the main monitor, that works. Using HDMI to VGA adapter to the second monitor doesn’t work. Now I suspected it was the HDMI and DP port on the GPU. I message the guy I bought it from and he had no issues with either HDMI or DP. This made me think it was the Computer. So I took it from my brothers and put it into mine. Still exactly the same symptoms. I have tried every combination of cable to no avail.
Google is no help because it is flooded with people who are plugging their second monitors into their motherboards. I am not that stupid. At least I think I’m not. The threads that are correct either have no solution or the solution doesn’t work.
Suggest its Monitor not having HDMI 2.0 Monitor is ASUS VG248. This monitor has worked with DP for the GTX 770, 1050ti, a different 970, 1060. I doubt it’s the monitor. Plus I have tried 2 other monitors on top of that a vp228 and with an HDMI to VGA adapter for a few old old monitors.
Suggests HDMI is dead Im leaning towards this because I have the same symptoms but the Facebook marketplace seller says that it worked.
So far I have tried
— Every possible combination of cable. Both DVI ports work. But HDMI and DP dont. A cable that I know works because they were used with the 770.
— Reseated GPU
— Changed GPU to different PC. Same symptoms.
— Driver Reinstallation.
— Booted with only one monitor plugged into HDMI and DP.
— Both computers have had multiple other GPUs in them in their history, 1050tis, 970, 960, 760, 770, 1060,
— 3 different monitors all work with DVI but none with HDMI.
I’m about 99% sure it’s the GPU but what on the GPU is causing this? Is there a way to fix it? or should I return it to the previous owner? He has been very compliant and told me when I picked it up from his house if there were no issues and that I can return it if there is an issue.
