How to install Dolby Audio on Windows 11/10 computer
Dolby Atmos is one of the most sought-after features for people shopping for a new soundbar or home theater system – but it’s different from Dolby Audio. In this post, we will show you how to install Dolby Audio on your Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC.
What is Dolby?
Before we get right to it, a bit of background. Essentially, Dolby is an audio compression technology – it makes sound like movie soundtracks, which is designed for vast rooms and huge, cinema-style speakers – and compresses it for our viewing pleasure at home. All this is done without compromising on sound quality.
What’s the difference between Dolby Audio and Dolby Atmos?
Dolby Audio is a 2D audio technology that makes subtle enhancements to whatever you’re watching — be it a sporting event, streamed movie or even a DVD or Blu-ray — so that it sounds generally better.
On the other hand, Dolby Atmos is a 3D immersive technology that allows a speaker or speaker system to ‘trick’ your brain into thinking that you’re ‘surrounded’ by sound – it essentially gives you the watching a movie in the cinema experience, where it seems like you’re surrounded by speakers, even when you’re not.
You can download and install Dolby Audio on Windows 10/11 device in either of two ways. We’ll explore this topic under the methods outlined below in this section as follows.
Download and install Dolby Audio from Microsoft Store
To download and install Dolby Audio on your Windows 10/11 device from Microsoft Store, do the following:
- Open Microsoft Store. If you’re having issues opening Microsoft Store, this guide can help you.
- Search for dolby audio.
- Alternatively, you can access this Dolby Audio page link on Microsoft Store.
- Now, click the Get button to download and install Dolby Audio on your device.
Download and install Dolby Audio as Desktop app
This is a two-step process that includes:
- Install the Dolby Digital Plus AA Driver
- Run the Setup File for Dolby Digital Plus AA
Let’s see the process in detail.
1] Install the Dolby Digital Plus AA Driver
To download and install the Dolby Digital Plus AA Driver on your Windows 10/11 device, do the following:
- Search for and download the Dolby Digital Plus Advance Audio archive package from dolby.com.
- Unzip the archive package.
- Next, disable driver signature enforcement.
- Now that you have driver signature enforcement disabled, open Device Manager.
- In Device Manager, scroll down through the list of installed devices and expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
- Right-click Realtek(R) Audio and select Update driver.
- Click Browse my computer for driver software.
- Click Let me pick from a list of available drivers.
- Click Have Disk.
- Click Browse.
- In the Locate File window, double-click the Dolby Digital Plus Advance Audio folder.
- In the folder, double-click the folder for your system architecture.
- Now, double-click the Drivers folder.
- In the Drivers folder, double-click the Digital Plus AA file.
- Click OK on the Install From Disk prompt.
- Now, select Dolby Digital Plus Advance Audio.
- Click Next.
- Click Yes on Update Driver Warning prompt.
- Restart your computer to complete the update process.
Now, proceed with Step 2 below.
2] Run the Setup File for Dolby Digital Plus AA
After your PC has completed boot, to run the setup file for Dolby Digital Plus AA on your Windows 10/11 device, do the following:
- Open File Explorer.
- Navigate to the location where you extracted the zip file in step 1 above.
- At the location, double-click the Dolby Digital Plus Advanced Audio folder.
- In the folder, double-click the folder for your system architecture (x64).
- Now, double-click the Setup folder.
- Double-click the DolbyDigitalPlusAAx64 file to run the setup on your Windows 10/11 computer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install Dolby Digital Plus on your PC.

That way you would have the latest Realtek Driver WITH Dolby properly working PS: Run a techno track with Dolby on, then while it’s on, turn DOLBY OFF! And see the bass really start kicking! The Dolby does enhance the audio fidely but it kills the bass! So it depends on what you want, better Audio quality or crappy audio quality with proper bass! I have no trust that DELL will ever fix their buggy drivers. Here is what I noticed: the latest Realtek Audio Driver posted by DELL has a missing folder called PCEE4 That folder contains 3 files: DolbyAdvancedAudio.msi DolbyHomeTheater.msi DolbySelectorTaskPatch.exe So previously what I used to do, is install that latest driver, then after the restart, I would manually double click on the DolbyAdancedAudio.msi to install it!
While the Dolby Digital app did appear in the taskbar, I tested some audio and with Dolby on or off it made 0 difference to the sound effects. Furthermore, the equalizer wasn’t moving up/down depending on the audio frequencies like it should.
So what I did was, I copied that PCEE4 from the previous driver and placed it in the main folder named RealtekHDAudio Then I uninstalled the audio driver and restarted. Now, I installed the driver with that copied folder in it and guess what? This time the Dolby Digital did install and it DOES make a difference.

The only Dolby that I know of is a separate application, and not part of RealTek. I have a Lenovo Laptop with RealTek audio and Dolby, but the Dolby is a separate application.
My desktop systems that I have all have RealTek audio but there is no Dolby. Both of my desktop systems come with SoundBlaster Advanced Motherboard audio enhancements for the RealTek but it is a separate program, supplied with the Motherboard software and did not come from RealTek. Do you have Dolby software? The specs for the ASRock P55 Pro do not specifically state Dolby.
It does say ‘ Premium Blu-ray audio support’ whatever that is. This morning I began researching Dolby for my HTPC. I am using a nice set of stereo computer speakers and wondered if all I could ever get was stereo or if Dolby was possible. What I found was Dolby Home Theater or ‘Dolby Virtual Speaker’ which is supposed to provide the expanded sound quality of Dolby on 2 speaker systems. Then I found this (link below) which intrigued me. It uses uncertified drivers so I was trying to see if there was another way.
Then I found this youtube video. Worked OK up to trying to install the Dolby Home Theater software. I got the, ‘PCEE needs to be installed’ error when I tried. Upon refresh it lost my Dolby, so I also had to follow the instructions listed in the previously mentioned video, and the driver as well as the Dolby portion is part of my Realtek drivers downloaded from the support pages for my computer.
I also get the same error PCEE needs to be installed. Thank you ahead of time for any help.
EDIT: Found out problemI FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE VIDEO. Used the setup program itself to remove the drivers that video instructed to manually uninstall from Device Manager. 2 Computer must be restart at this point, even if doesn’t tell you to. Restarted setup program, it then installed the drivers again, and added back in the Dolby Surround Sound Program that was missing after 2 restarts initiated by the program, each time the program coming back up after the restart to finish extra stuff.
(I think before I mistakenly cancelled out of it when it restarted thinking it was accidentally started.) While this is what worked for me for my computer, the people that have other computers that the dolby software is included should have similar solutions as long as you download the driver for that individual computer from the manufacturers website like I did. Worked OK up to trying to install the Dolby Home Theater software.

Try the and see if the folks will help you there. As fireberd said, if the board didn’t specifically state that it did come with Dolby HT, you won’t be able to use it. The Dolby Home Theater software supports a limited number of Realtek HD audio devices and the Realtek audio hardware on the ASRock P55 Pro doesn’t seem to be on the ‘supported’ list for Dolby. Reason why Dolby HT works on your machine is because it first came with it. Specs on Acer Aspire M series posted. Dolby Advanced Audio v2 is designed into select PC models and is not available for direct purchase or download.

The SoundBlaster Advanced MB, is the same way. Its OEM only.Dolby Link is now outdated — redirects to (referring to Dolby Advanced Audio v2) for Dolby Home Theater V4 goes. I have a solution for SJMaye but it’s an expensive one. The Xonar U7 device has its own drivers that allow use of the Dolby HTv4 software.
It won’t allow Dolby HTv4 to be used on the onboard Realtek audio device on the ASRock board though. Or replace the ASRock motherboard with a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3, UD5 or UD7 board — those boards have Dolby HTv4 support though the Dolby HT program is bundled on the board’s drivers & utilities CD and not on the Gigabyte support site for those boards. Dolby Home Theater does not work
Dolby Home Theater may not be able to start or some functions may not work, the equalizer may not move, the Dolby Digital Plus function may not work, or you are getting a Missing driver message. Either way, installing the correct driver version will help. nine0010

From what we understand, this is because the current Dolby Digital Plus audio driver is not compatible with your regular audio driver.

Click on Windows Key + X to launch Device Manager .
Finally, right-click on the correct device name, then select Remove from the context menu.
