The
Xeon e5 2630 v3 is an inexpensive octa-core processor based on the Haswell architecture. It’s not bad enough on its own, but it’s not widely used due to the presence of both the more powerful Xeon E5 2640 v3 and the budget Xeon e5 2620 v3. 9
2600 MHZ (3-8 nuclei)
The processor controller supports only DDR4. The maximum frequency of RAM for this stone is only 1866 MHz. In quad-channel mode, you can count on a memory bandwidth of ~50 GB/s, which is not much different from the speeds of quad-channel DDR3.
The closest equivalent of the 2011 socket processor lineup is the Xeon e5 2665, but the 2630 v3 outperforms it with a new architecture and faster caches. Also, the advantages include a small heat dissipation and power consumption of the model.
Overclocking
Like the entire Xeon e5 2600 v3 line, the model has a locked multiplier, but you can increase performance in other ways:
- Bus overclocking (if supported by the motherboard). You should not count on great results, usually ~ 105 MHz is the limit.
- Turbo boost lock. This hack allows you to fix the maximum frequency of TB for all cores (in this case, 3.2 GHz). Available for revisions pre-QS and higher. This method requires modifying the BIOS of the board, as well as some other manipulations. You can read more about the TB hack here and here.
If you have a suitable board, nothing prevents you from combining unlock with overclocking via the bus
Cooling
In stock, the processor does not impose special requirements on the cooling system, a conventional horizontal cooler with a copper heel could cope with heat removal. However, when the turbo boost unlock is activated, heat dissipation increases, so it’s better to give preference to inexpensive tower coolers. Models with 2-3 heat pipes will be enough, more powerful cooling systems can be taken if you plan to upgrade to hotter CPUs in the future.

Performance and Benchmarks
The Xeon e5 2630v3 shows quite a predictable performance level, slightly inferior to the older 2640v3. After unlocking the turbo boost, all the difference between the processors comes down to 200 MHz frequency.
