Fat people driving small cars: Reddit — Dive into anything

Report: US buyers too fat for small cars

Big people and small cars don’t mix, with rising levels of obesity forcing US buyers into larger vehicles.

A study has found that buyers in the US are shying away from more diminutive cars because they’re too large to feel comfortable in them.

The report on US website AOL Autos states that sales of large vehicles (including SUVs, pickup trucks and people-movers) have been steadily rising since the 1970s – with the percentage of people who are overweight or obese following a similar trajectory.

More recently, car manufacturers have increasingly struggled to sell small cars, despite record-high fuel prices. While there have been strong years for small car sales (2008, for example, saw 28 per cent of all sales made up of smaller vehicles), the take-up rate has dropped substantially – the current  for 2011 is about 22 per cent.

The US market has only recently opened its doors to city-sized cars such as Ford’s Fiesta (which went on sale in 2010) and Mazda’s 2 (late 2009) – but, as the report claims,  drivers simply don’t feel safe or secure in smaller cars and therefore opt for bigger cars that invariably use more fuel.

Karen Steelman – a stay at home mother with a body mass index of 37 (seven points above the obesity mark) – told AOL Autos that she’d researched several small cars and even test-driven a few, but none of them made her feel safe or comfortable.

«I want to be environmentally friendly, but unless I am in an SUV these days … I find no pleasure or comfort in driving,» Steelman told the site.

In the US, the number of obese people is currently estimated at around 40 per cent (close to 123 million people), with a projected increase to 43 per cent in 2018.

Business consulting firm AT Kearney’s vice president Dan Cheng said that even though smaller cars are almost always cheaper than larger vehicles, little can be done if people are continually getting bigger.

Some manufacturers, though, are working towards making smaller cars more comfortable for larger occupants.

Ford US, for instance, is currently working on making car interiors more accommodating for larger drivers. Two of the key areas that are being looked at are interior design – seat controls and intruding centre consoles are the main bugbears – and roofline height, as bigger drivers generally sit up higher in their seat.

Similar conditions are also becoming more prevalent in Australian car industry. Sales of SUVs and larger dual-cab utes are booming, and the national obesity rate – according to the government – is about 60 per cent for adults and 25 per cent for children.

Uber-luxury brand Bentley has targeted the waistlines of Australians, saying it had received complaints that its seats weren’t wide enough for those who are broader set.

Spacious sedans that offer roomy leg and hip space for larger drivers

Driving is a necessary part of daily life. In fact, more than 90 percent of Americans drive to work (per the Brookings Institute). Unfortunately, car design doesn’t always move forward with larger, wider drivers in mind.

The need for cars that heavier people can drive safely and comfortably isn’t just theoretical. According to CDC statistics from 2013-2014, nearly 38 percent of Americans are obese, and nearly 71 percent are overweight. Meanwhile, Edmunds reports that obese drivers face much higher risks behind the wheel.

For drivers who are overweight or obese, here’s a look at five cars that provide plenty of hip room to accommodate their size, along with adequate leg room and head room for those who are also taller than average.

2020 Honda Fit Premiere
Photo: Honda

Subcompact car: 2020 Honda Fit

Why it’s great: A subcompact car isn’t usually the most ideal option for a larger driver. However, the 2020 Honda Fit provides 51.5 inches of front hip room, which is better than usual for this segment. The Fit also provides 41.4 inches of front leg room and 39.5 inches of front head room, both of which are equal to what’s available in many larger vehicles.

Another good option: 2020 Toyota Yaris

2018 Subaru Impreza

Compact car: 2020 Subaru Impreza

Why it’s great: The 2020 Subaru Impreza offers a roomy 56.7 inches of front shoulder/hip room for wider drivers. It also offers an outstanding 43.1 inches of front leg room, along with 39.8 inches of front head room.

Another good option: 2020 Chevy Cruze

2020 Kia Optima

Midsize sedan: 2020 Kia Optima

Why it’s great: The 2020 Kia Optima provides a comfortable 56 inches of front hip room. Front leg room comes in at a spacious 45.5 inches, while front head room measures 39.8 inches.

Another good option: 2020 Hyundai Sonata

2018 Chevrolet Impala

Full-size sedan: 2020 Chevrolet Impala

Why it’s great: Larger drivers get 54. 9 inches of front hip room in the 2020 Chevrolet Impala, along with 45.8 inches of front leg room and 39.9 inches of front head room.

Another good option: 2020 Nissan Maxima

2019 Cadillac CT6-V

Photo: Cadillac

Luxury car: 2020 Cadillac CT6

Why it’s great: The 2020 Cadillac CT6 provides plenty of front hip room: 55.9 inches. It also provides a generous 46.4 inches of front leg room and 40.2 inches of front head room. Bear in mind that production of the 2020 CT6 is limited, as Cadillac discontinued it in the USA.

Another good option: 2020 Genesis G90

While considering these cars, keep in mind that body types vary widely, so a personal inspection and test drive is an especially crucial step in any buying decision. It’s also important to make sure that the seatbelt fits properly and that there is adequate space between the chest and the steering wheel.

90,000 Fat parents have fat children 2

And being fat has nothing to do with housekeeping, love and the ability to cook. All the fat people I know just don’t like to cook, they mostly throw fast food, loaves with butter and meat delicacies, ready-made sweets, confectionery and pastries. My sister and son-in-law are fat, they got fed up when extra money appeared. My sister stopped cooking altogether. They eat cakes every day, a roll with ham, smoked sausages and cheeses. They don’t have any guests and feasts, laziness and it’s a pity for money. While they lived in poverty, cooked soups, the sister carefully thought out what to cook, they were both slender. 9Guest

Complete nonsense about fat parents and fat children. Almost all of my friends mothers were fat or very fat, and the girlfriends themselves are slender or thin. One friend’s mother was so fat that her daughter was embarrassed to go to the beach with her. Even came to tears. Moreover, the mother was young, gave birth to a friend at 22 years old. And fat just has nothing to do with housekeeping, love and the ability to cook. How is that, explain? That is, you eat a leaf of lettuce, and weigh 100 kg? Think for yourself, these 100 kg just do not come from nowhere. Everything comes from food.

This food is USED DIFFERENTLY in the body. genetically embedded processes. That’s the whole point. For some it goes to the muscles, for others it goes straight to the adipose tissue. The same leaf of lettuce

don’t go to the side. Just an example when people of different genetics of different ages of different health become thin if they eat little, that’s all. There are no such who remain fat no matter what or get fat from air, from water, etc.

Everyone uses the same food. Metabolism is different, yes. Think for yourself, weight loss always begins with dietary adjustments! As well as the process of gaining weight. It all depends on calories, proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Calorie content above the norm — weight gain, carbohydrates predominate — there is a fat mass.

And how then to explain that many people start to get fat in marriage? There lived a thin guy / girl up to 30 years old, and after the wedding he began to get better, there are many such examples, but almost all of them. Has the genome changed or have people just moved less and eat more?

Genes, hormones are all bullshit. They get fat from food. Always. Genes and hormones can only influence poor metabolism, which will result in faster weight gain and slower weight loss. But if an obese person does not overeat high-calorie foods and exercises, he will not be fat! Because there is nothing to make him gain weight. Of course, people are different, someone throws cakes and doesn’t get fat, and someone can gain an extra 200 g of salad, but if there are health problems, and you don’t want to be a cloud, then you can sacrifice gluttony.

I disagree with 1.2. There are two families of close relatives (I watch their life «in real time» almost every day), where ALL generations were exactly FAT, and not just chubby. And they got married, they also married fat people. So. Their way of life is a continuous war with weight (fruitless). At home, no sweet rolls and so on. Calorie counting, that’s all. Because serious problems with the musculoskeletal system. The weight presses on the joints. Children also grow up in an atmosphere of control over what they eat. But all in vain. The thickness doesn’t go away. The maximum in adults is with an almost complete hunger strike -0.5 kg per month (out of about 90-100). But at the same time, there is no strength at all by the type of anemia, even if you lie in a layer. This is when, conditionally, lettuce and yogurt. Any other food in the PP category either costs weight or grows a little. Genes are clearly at work here

Childhood scorched by war. Gladun Galina Andreevna

    02/08/2019

I was born in the Siberian village of Chistoozerka, Barabinsky District, Novosibirsk Region. Parents are indigenous Siberians from large families.

My parents; father — Andrey Ilyich, mother — Augusta Ivanovna, 1949

We had four parents. I was born at 1935, brother Nikolai — in 1937, sister Elvira — in 1939, and in April 1941 sister Tamara was born. They lived in a big family — mother, Augusta Ivanovna, father, Andrey Ilyich, father’s parents — grandfather Ilya Ivanovich and grandmother Vasilisa, and we are children.

In the photograph from left to right: brother Nikolai, father Andrey Ilyich, grandfather Ilya Ivanovich, sister Tamara, mother — Augusta Ivanovna, sister Elvira and I — Galina. 1946

Before the war, we lived in the village of Karmakla on Lake Sartlan (Novosibirsk Region).

Dad was the head of the fish station. Brigades of fishermen on rowboats were catching fish (ide, pike, perch, chebak, crucian) with a net. They unloaded it into a storehouse, where they froze, salted, dried, smoked and sent to the base in the city of Barabinsk by trucks. In the collective farm called «Red Sailor» of the same village, they grew wheat, rye, peas, carrots, beets, kept dairy cattle, horses, and there was one team of fishermen. The school in the village was 4 years old, there were only two teachers. There was also a small club, two shops, a first-aid post with a paramedic. All families had their own gardens, kept cows, chickens, ducks, pigs. They didn’t live richly, but they didn’t go hungry either. Grandfather Ilya knitted and repaired nets, mother and grandmother were engaged in housekeeping and raising children. At the age of 6 I learned to read and in the evenings, when the whole family got together, I read fairy tales aloud.

There was no radio or telephone in the village. Therefore, we learned that the war had begun only in the evening.

June 22, 1941 was a Sunday and the weather was very hot. Therefore, all the children from the very morning disappeared on the lake. The adults, having finished their household chores, went out into the street, sat on benches, talked, laughed. And then they saw that someone was riding a horse, waving his arms, shouting. The children ran to find out what had happened. I ran into the house and said: “Mom, uncle says that there is a war. What is this war? Mom just cried.

Mobilization began immediately. Almost all healthy men were taken away. There were old people, teenagers and women. Father was seen off twice. Twice they collected things, cried. But they brought him back. It turned out that he had some kind of congenital disease. He couldn’t run. He walked very fast, but he could not run, he was suffocating and fainted.

From the district committee of the party, dad received a task — to organize the harvesting of fish for the front.

Once dad came home gloomy and said: “Mother! I’ll probably get arrested. I will not be able to fulfill the plan for the extraction of fish, no people. Then, he sat down and said: «I’ll go collect the women, we’ll manage.» And he assembled a women’s brigade. Throughout the war, these women rowed longboats loaded with fish, and in winter they dug holes and pulled heavy seines with fish from under the ice, all work was done by hand. And where did the forces come from? In the morning they left quietly, silently, and they were already driving back with songs. Through the whole lake a song was heard: “Khasbulat is a daring…”.

On the shore, fish were also processed by women. The children also helped. In the summer they hung them to dry, then they took them off the hangers and put them in boxes. Although the work was not hard, all fingers were punctured from sharp fish fins. But for this work we were given dried and smoked fish to eat. The fish was greasy when it hung on hangers, fat dripped from it, and we substituted our mouths under these drops. It was so delicious. They came home smelling of fish and smeared with grease. They also worked on a par with adults in the fields. In the autumn, schoolchildren on the collective farm harvested potatoes, carrots, beets, cabbage, and collected spikelets.

This is how war entered our lives. Products have disappeared from the store. They began to be issued on cards, according to the lists they were given kerosene for lamps. There were long queues for bread. Wounded soldiers returned, funerals came, they wept both from grief and joy.

When coal and firewood were scarce, the stoves began to be heated with reeds. Potbelly stoves began to be installed in the huts, since you cannot heat a Russian stove with reeds. As soon as the lake froze over, the old men and women went to mow the reeds and brought them to their homes. Then we tied it into bundles and heated the stove with them.

Surprisingly, in these years there were good harvests of potatoes, cabbage, carrots and beets both in vegetable gardens and on collective farm fields. There were enough vegetables until May, then fish helped out. The workers of the fish point were given «rations» of fish, and the old men and teenagers caught it themselves. At the fish point, large fish were gutted for salting. From offal, women learned to render fat. Mom made it clean, odorless, with the taste of fish. We ate it with potatoes, dipped slices of bread in salted fat. And if there was a little flour, they baked cakes on this fat. Fish bones were not thrown away, they were dried in the oven, crushed in a mortar and added to flour for bread.

In 1944, military vehicles that came for fish brought smoky sugar, flour, peas, combined fat, stewed meat in crumpled cans. The food was smoky, the sugar even a little fried. These products were from ships that were bombed. We received products according to the lists, and it was a holiday.

In 1942, Kalmyks, Estonians, Latvians, and Germans evacuated from the European part of the country began to arrive. My girlfriends were Karelian Galya, Kalmyk Bayanka, Russians Toma and Marusya, German Marta. The Kalmyks were very friendly, the children were friends and played with the locals. We became very good friends with a girl named Bayana. In appearance, we were completely opposite. I am completely white — white hair, white skin, and she had jet black hair and very dark skin. We sat at the same desk and the boys, entering the classroom, laughed: “Look, they are sitting day and night!”.

Adult Kalmyks worked together with everyone on the collective farm, at the fish receiving station and fishing. Two young Kalmyks worked in the office. The accountant helped me solve difficult problems in arithmetic. And Bayanka’s father was a professional shoemaker. He sewed canvas slippers so that the children would not run barefoot. And once he sewed me real shoes with heels. At school, they called me «Galya in heels.»

Many of the young people then married and married local people, and remained to live with their families in Siberia. Bayana also got married at one time and moved to a neighboring collective farm. Some at 19In the 60s they left for their small homeland.

And the Estonians were very wary and distant. The children were very well dressed, in suits and bow ties. And they sat in the classroom separately in the corner and they were never called to the board, and the assignments were given in writing. They stayed with us for a short time, they were sent somewhere further.

There were not enough textbooks. Dad went on business to various collective farms and brought old textbooks from familiar teachers and chairmen, whose children had already graduated from school. The whole class used these textbooks. When the notebooks ran out, they wrote on newspapers between the lines, on old books, turning them over so that the text could not be read. Feathers ran out — they wrote with reed pens and goose quills. Thick stalks of reeds were sharpened like feathers and written with ink from beets and soot.

We didn’t have any toys. Mom made straw dolls, wrapped them in a rag, inserted a stick instead of hands, and painted her face.

In our area, neither spruce nor pine grew. I remember how grandfather Ilya cut down a small birch in winter and we put it in the hut instead of a Christmas tree. They cut strips from the newspaper, glued them into rings with potato glue and made chains. Toys were made from rags. Dad went to a meeting in the city and brought back two real Christmas decorations — a samovar and a big ball. This decorated the birch.

And in 1943, evacuees from Leningrad were brought to us for a short time. I remember how dad brought a young man to us and said that he would stay with us. When he undressed, his mother and grandmother screamed and cried «What a thin one!» It was just a skeleton. Mom was warned that you need to feed him little by little. Mom poured him soup and gave him bread. He ate for probably an hour, tearing off tiny pieces of bread and washing down his fish soup. Even now, remembering this episode, I can not hold back my tears. Then they, too, were taken somewhere further.

In those years, the winters were very severe, and in the summer there were torrential rains with thunderstorms. But the children studied, played their children’s games, waited for the warm summer to splash around on the lake, bask in the sun. In winter, they gathered near the burning stoves, baked potatoes on potbelly stoves and read books aloud or told fairy tales.

We were poorly dressed and shod, so we caught a cold. We were treated by doctors evacuated from Leningrad — the Ryzhovs, people of amazing kindness. There were no medicines, they were treated with folk remedies, attention and affection. Children were not even afraid of vaccinations, although they were very painful. But they saved people from infections — there was no typhus, no scarlet fever, no dysentery in the villages. At 19In 42, a disease appeared among the fishermen — suddenly, the temperature rose sharply above 40 degrees, the person was shaking in a chill and losing consciousness. It turned out to be malaria. And then the paramedic began to go from house to house and distribute yellow cinchona tablets to all patients, as well as adults and children for prevention. They were such bitter pills, they were hard to swallow. But persuasion, and even threats (we won’t give sugar!) We were forced to eat. They cried, but swallowed. They coped with the disease, it did not reach the epidemic. With the remaining pills, the women dyed the gauze and sewed curtains for the windows. Beautiful, the sun on the windows!

Children studied, adults worked, life went on. And everyone was waiting for the end of the damned war.

They learned about the victory from a message on the radio, and in the evening a courier from the village council rode on horseback. He waved a red flag and shouted: “Victory! Victory!». In the evening the fishermen returned, everyone gathered at the office. They congratulated each other, laughed, sang, cried.

A peaceful life began in labors and worries. Soldiers began to return, but not all returned. There were not enough workers. The grown-up boys replaced their mothers on fishing trips.

1947. From right to left: Galina, Nikolai Elvira, Tamara, Boris (cousin)

Gradually, life got better. They brought two boats, motors for launches, new nets. The fish processing specialists arrived. Fry of new species of fish — carp, carp, ripus, tench — began to be launched into the lake. They created a fish hatchery for growing fry on the lake. They began to build housing for fishermen, built a storehouse for processing fish, a bathhouse, a bakery, and a 7-year-old school.

A few years later, commercial catching of fish and on-site processing began. Frozen, dried, salted, smoked fish began to go on sale.

One day a group of fishery specialists from Novosibirsk and Tyumen came to get acquainted with the work of fish stations on Sartlan. Among them was Anatoly Savelyevich Zybin. He really liked the fish cooked by my mother at home. Many years later, we met with him at the Omskhi, when the leaders of educational farm No. 2 gathered for a meeting on pond management. A.S. Zybin spoke about his trips to the lakes of the Novosibirsk region and remembered our fish station and my father as a good expert on fisheries. That’s how we met again.

In 1946, my father, as a specialist in fisheries, was sent to organize fish points on the lakes of the Zdvinsky, Kupinsky, Karasuksky districts. Our whole family went with him. We studied at different schools, but studied well. All completed the 10-year-old and received a vocational education. Brother Nikolai is an auto mechanic, knew and knew how to drive all types of cars and motorcycles, sister Elvira is a projectionist, sister Tamara is a kindergarten teacher.
