CHAPTER II. FIGHT AGAINST PASSIONS AND ACQUIRE VIRTUES
Fight against passions and acquire virtues
The Lord will test the righteous and the wicked: he who loves unrighteousness hates his soul.
(Ps. 10:5)
In sinful souls there are hellish fire, darkness, worms and tartare in various voluptuousness, the all-consuming darkness of ignorance, in the unquenchable thirst for sensual pleasure and the stench of fetid sin.
These pledges and thresholds of hellish torments arise and act in them as a result of passionate habit. Just as the beginnings of hellish torment are invisibly hidden in the souls of sinners, so the beginnings of heavenly blessings are communicated to the hearts of the righteous through the Holy Spirit. The kingdom of heaven is a virtuous life, just as hellish torment is the result of passionate habits. Commandments should be considered and called actions, and virtues habits, just as vices, due to their stability, are called habits. The cause of passions abuse and sinful deeds, thoughts passions, dreams thoughts, thoughts memory, memory oblivion; the mother of forgetfulness is ignorance, the cause of ignorance is carelessness. As the origin of the virtues is in the soul, so is the source of the passions. But the former are naturally born in it, while the latter are contrary to nature. Only those who labor in deed and word and who have received from the Holy Spirit the gift of knowledge and reasoning can recognize the power and action of the passions. Reason illuminates a person like the sun, but the insane spontaneously closes the eyes of the soul with unbelief and laziness, indulges in oblivion and despondency. Ignorance, oblivion and despondency are strong and strong giants, supporting mental foreigners. If they are defeated, then it will be easy to fight with all the power of the evil spirits. Ignorance is the mother of all evils, and oblivion is his sister and helper. Despondency fills the soul with evil, covering it with dark clothes like a black cloud. Whoever has completely uprooted self-love in his soul will easily overcome other passions with the help of the grace of God. Voluptuousness (love of luxury and sensual pleasures) and love of glory (vanity) are close to self-love.
He who does not hate them will not destroy the other passions, since they are the parents of every vice. nine0005 The love of money is the root of all evil (1 Tim. 6:10), but it is clearly composed of vanity and voluptuousness. The mind is blinded by three passions: voluptuousness (sweetness), avarice and vanity. Fury, anger, scolding, murders and all other evil from them in people have strongly strengthened. The rest of the demons all go behind them, take the wounded and cause evil and harm to the souls. It is known from experience that it is impossible for a person to fall into sin or any passion, unless he has first been wounded by one of these three giants, and it does not happen otherwise.
It is impossible to fall into the hands of the spirit of fornication without falling from gluttony (gluttony), and it is impossible to be indignant with rage for one who does not fight for food, or wealth, or glory. And it is impossible to escape the spirit of sorrow who has not suffered the deprivation of all this. He who conquered the three initial passions destroyed the others as well, and thus conquered all passions. Therefore, it is necessary to hate the love of money, vanity and voluptuousness, as the mothers of all passions. For this the apostle says:0005 Do not love the world, nor anything in the world «(1 Jn. 2, 15). Here the apostle does not command to recklessly hate the creation of God, but says that it is necessary to cut off the causes of the main passions.
Brief «genealogy» of the eight ruling passions is as follows. The three great passions (gluttony, love of money and vanity) are followed by their offspring five evil spirits: fornication, anger, sorrow, despondency and pride. From gluttony (gluttony) comes fornication, from the love of money — anger, from which sadness, producing despondency. From vanity comes pride.
