Last but not least we have our customary look at overclocking performance. With all 3 of our cards being based on the same reference design, we expect to see some relatively consistent results between the cards. At the same time NVIDIA has told us that GTX 750 has some very interesting overclocking properties, and boy they weren’t kidding.

On a quick note, as a GPU Boost 2.0 product, overclocking on the GTX 750 series is not any different than on other GTX 700 series cards. It’s still based on offset overclocking, with the user adjusting offsets for the final overclock. But with that said there are two things to point out. The first is that the power target is limited to 100% on all cards. Because these are sub-75W cards, NVIDIA is not allowing anyone to exceed the card’s default TDP, so you only have as much power to play with as you started with. Second of all, none of our cards had available overvoltage bins. Apparently some cards do, but ours did not, so our voltage bins maxed out at the default bins you see listed.

Finally, all 3 cards have a maximum clock offset of 135MHz. This will be an important fact in a little bit.

As we can quickly see, two patterns emerge. The first is that with every card equipped with 6GHz memory (though we remain unsure which mode the Zotac GTX 750’s is in), each and every card hits at least 6GHz, and sometimes a bit more. With the 128-bit memory bus generally providing the biggest bottleneck for GM107, the fact that there is 12%+ overclocking headroom here is going to be very helpful in feeding the tiny beast that is GM107.

More significantly however is the core overclock. We maxed out every single one. Every card, from the NVIDIA reference card to the Zotac cards, had no trouble overclocking by the full 135MHz to their respective maximum overclocks. The Zotac GTX 750 Ti, having the highest maximum boost clock by default, is technically the winner here at 1310MHz. But at this point everyone is a winner. Going by the maximum boost clock, every card is capable of an 11% core overclock, to go with that tasty 12% memory overclock.

The fact of the matter is that this is not something we normally encounter. Sub-75W cards are not poor overclockers, but they’re not usually strong overclockers either, which is why a 135MHz offset limit makes sense at first glance. But it’s clear that NVIDIA underestimated their own overclocking potential here when setting the specifications for these cards, as there’s seeming some headroom left untapped. Without additional offset room it’s impossible to say just how much more overclocking headroom remains – it may not be very much – but there should be room for at least some additional overclocking.

At this point with cards already in the pipeline we’ll have to take a look at individual cards and see what manufacturers have set their offset limits at. If they have followed NVIDIA’s specifications, then they’ll be equally limited. But hopefully with the launch now behind them, NVIDIA’s partners can work with NVIDIA on making greater offsets available on newer batches of cards.

Depending on the game being used, the benefits from overclocking range from 9% to 12%, roughly in-line with our overclocks. For the GTX 750 this is sometimes enough to catch the stock clocked R7 260X, but even with this overclock the GTX 750 Ti will still generally trail the R7 265.

On the other hand, because of the hard TDP limit of 100%, this extra performance is relatively cheap. Video card power consumption moves by only a few watts, and then a few watts of CPU time on top of that. For all practical purposes overclocking can extend NVIDIA’s already incredible performance-per-watt ratio by another 10% with no meaningful impact on noise. Given the consistency of overclocking headroom we’ve seen in our GTX 750 series samples, this is one of those scenarios where overclocking is going to be a reasonable and (relatively) fool proof action to take.

Galaxy’s Overclock Oriented GeForce GTX 750 Ti HOF Dismantled and Detailed

Galaxy Microsystems unveiled their GeForce GTX 750 Ti HOF, which was undoubtedly the fastest and an insanely custom designed GTX 750 Ti card that I have ever seen back at Computex 2014. We just saw a glimpse of the card during the event but GamerSky has managed to grab one and done a comprehensive testing of the card itself just to reveal that the card can hit insane clock speeds on air without any voltage adjustments of OC profiles.

In terms of technical core specifications, the card features NVIDIA’s first generation Maxwell chip «GM107» with 640 CUDA cores, 40 texture mapping units and 16 raster operation units. The chip is based off the 28nm process and we expect to see NVIDIA’s second generation Maxwell architecture based cards during September 2014. The GeForce GTX 750 Ti HOF also comes with a 2 GB GDDR5 memory running across a 128-bit interface and memory clocked at the standard 5400 MHz (5.4 GHz effective) clock speed pumping out a total bandwidth of 86.4 GB/s. These are the basic specifications which you should expect from a GeForce GTX 750 Ti but its not the specs that scare me, its the sheer design of this card.

Starting off with the core clocks, this is the fastest factory overclocked design currently with core frequencies rated at 1215 MHz and 1294 MHz boost clock. The Maxwell core architecture is capable of high frequencies which is exactly what Galaxy has done over here but does it leave room for more overclocking? That’s something which only the PCB can decide and this one is beast. The Galaxy GeForce GTX 750 Ti HOF is based off a entry level Maxwell chip which is geared towards budget gamers and the reference model retails for $149 US. The HOF will most certainly retail at a higher price but it comes with a PCB that’s bigger than the one featured on GeForce GTX 770 HOF and a triple fan cooler for the sake of overclocking. Seriously, this card runs around 50-60C on load in the reference designs, the triple fan cooler is pure overkill for a chip of this standard but hey if I am paying an extra for this card, then why complain if Im getting something much better than the standard models.

In all honesty, the Galaxy HOF cooler is pure awesomeness, from its design to its layout and the way they have handled the color scheme from the milk white fans to the silver metallic shroud along with brushed aluminum backplate configured on the rear side of the PCB. This is not only the fastest GeForce GTX 750 Ti’s of all, this is also the most hottest.

Known as the Triple Fire «Limited Edition» heatsink, the cooler is used not only on the GTX 750 Ti HOF but also Galaxy’s high-end GTX 780 Ti HOF. The GTX 780 Ti HOF makes use of a more refined and beefy version but the design is similar. There are several HOF logos placed engraved on the shroud and backplate and the large «Hall of Fame» label on the side of the shroud actually lit up in white color. The Display connectors on the card include Dual DVI, HDMI and a Display Port. The cooler features three 80mm fans with dual heatpipe and aluminum extrusion technology. There are two sets of heatsinks which are interconnected via two dense copper heatpipes which make direct contact with the core base and dissipate heat along the several aluminum fins which are then cooled off by the triple fans.

The PCB on the other hand sticks with Galaxy’s highly acclaimed milk white color scheme and features a 6+2 Phase PWM with the IR3595 PWM controller featuring materials of high-end overclock standard such as the eight Coiltronics inductors rated at 70A. The back of the PCB features tantalum polymer capacitors which deliver stable current to the GPU core and power delivery system. The card features Samsung made K4G41325FC-HC03 memory chips clocked at the reference 5400 MHz but there’s no stopping you from overclocking this bad boy. Galaxy has really put aesthetics into consideration with this card and they have another HOF logo engraved on the PCB itself which is quite nice. A small BIOS chip is located next to the power connector which offers easier control if overclockers face any issue while overclocking.

Talking about power draw, the standard GeForce GTX 750 Ti has a TDP of 64W and there are several designs with and without a 6-Pin connector which is there just to add stability to the core. The Galaxy GeForce GTX 750 Ti HOF has a total power draw of 225 Watts. You heard it right, 225W and delivered through a single 8-Pin connector that is located on the board along with the 75W added through the PCI-Express connector. This again is part of the high-end overclocking positioning of this card. During testing, it was unveiled that the card was able to reach a stable 1.4 GHz without any BIOS profile or voltage adjustments with temperatures of under 70C which is impressive. The source mentions that user can take it further by messing with the voltage but that was the highest clock speed achieved with the card getting no additional voltage over the standard issued. The card hasn’t reached consumer market yet but it’ll definitely be priced around the $200 US mark due to its premium design but Galaxy should be applauded  for their continuous focus towards the enthusiast and overclocking community over and over again with the HOF series.

MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming review — economy option for GTA V, WoT and BF4

NVIDIA solutions, then the best option would be the GeForce GTX 750 Ti. And one of the best non-reference versions of this video card is undoubtedly the MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming.

Positioning on the market

It’s worth starting, perhaps, with the fact that the MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming video card in the catalogs of online stores can be listed under two other names: MSI N750TI TF 2GD5/OC and MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti Twin Frozr Gaming. But this is all the same video card built on the NVIDIA GM107 chip (640 stream processors) of the first generation of the Maxwell architecture. In the GeForce GTX 750 Ti product line, it sits between the budget GTX 750 (512 microcores) and the mid-range GTX 960 (1024 microkernels), which recently visited us for testing. GTX 750 Ti competitors from AMD are Radeon R7 260X and R7 265 — the first is slightly weaker, the second is slightly more expensive.

Design and Construction

The GTX 750 Ti looks almost identical to other MSI Gaming series graphics cards with Twin Frozr IV Advanced cooling system, such as the MSI R9 270 Gaming 2G. The same red and black casing, finned aluminum heatsink, a pair of copper heat pipes (6 and 8 mm) in direct contact with the graphics chip, and two large 10 cm fans. A metal stiffener stretches along one of the ends of the video card.

PCB is not shortened like the reference GTX 750 Ti. It uses high-quality Military Class 4 electronic components: high-temperature resistant Solid Cap and Hi-C Cap, as well as superconducting SFC chokes. The GDDR5 memory chips are manufactured by Samsung. The interface panel has a «gentleman’s» set of video outputs: DVI, HDMI and D-Sub.

Software

Given that the MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming does not need additional power (power consumption is only 60 W) and does not support SLI bundles, only a software disk and paper instructions are supplied with it. On the disk, in addition to drivers (it is better to download the latest from the official sites of MSI or NVIDIA), proprietary MSI applications are supplied — Gaming APP and Afterburner with Kombustor and Predator functions.

The Gaming APP allows you to switch frequency profiles for MSI graphics cards: in the case of MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming, these are «OS» (1085 MHz), «Gaming» (1059 MHz) and «Silent» (1020 MHz). By default, the MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming runs in «OS» maximum performance mode, while the «Silent» low-speed profile corresponds to the frequency of the reference GeForce GTX 750 Ti.

But MSI Afterburner is compatible with almost all brands of graphics cards. With its help, you can overclock graphics accelerators, and using the Kombustor and Predator functions, test video cards for overheating and record gameplay videos, respectively. The latter, however, is of little relevance for NVIDIA video cards with ShadowPlay hardware video recording.

Test bench configuration

  • Intel Core i3-4130 processor (2 cores, 4 threads, 3.4 GHz)
  • be quiet! Pure Rock (up to 150W)
  • motherboard MSI Z97 Gaming 5 (LGA1150)
  • RAM Kingston HyperX Savage 2×8 GB (DDR3, 2400 MHz)

  • WD Black hard drive (4 TB, 7200 rpm)
  • be quiet! POWER ZONE Z1-850W (750 W, 80 PLUS Bronze)

Overclocking

We managed to overclock our MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming to 1220/1298 MHz for the core and 6540 MHz for the memory without increasing the supply voltage. The increase in clock frequency compared to the nominal amounted to 135 MHz for the core and 1140 MHz for the memory. An excellent result, given the already existing factory overclocking.

Frequency formula Reference GTX 750 Ti MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming Overclocked MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming Growth, percent

Boost, MHz 1085 1163 1298 12
Memory frequency, MHz 5400 5400 6540 21

In idle, the core temperature of the video card was 30°C, after fifteen minutes of warming up by the Unigine Valley benchmark at nominal frequencies — 57°C, and under load after overclocking it increased to only 58°C. The TwinFrozr IV Advanced cooling system coped with its task not only efficiently, but also extremely quietly — no more than 1000 rpm, which is not at all distinguishable against the background of the buzzing of other PC components.

Test mode Temperature, °C Fan speed

Under load during acceleration 58 1000

Test Methodology

Video card performance has traditionally been tested in Unigine Valley, Tomb Raider, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Total War: Rome II and Sniper Elite 3 at 19 resolution20x1080 dots. In addition, at the numerous request of readers, the list of test games was replenished with the popular World of Tanks, Battlefield 4 and GTA V (testing in these three games was carried out only without overclocking).

Unigine Valley is a synthetic graphics benchmark that, unlike 3DMark, gives results not only in meaningless points, but also in much more understandable frames per second. The maximum picture quality profile is set to Extreme HD.

Tomb Raider is an adventure game from Square Enix. The penultimate graphics settings profile «Excellent» was selected, since the TressFX technology, which is supported only by AMD video cards, is used at the maximum. Testing was carried out using the benchmark built into the game.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is a fantasy action RPG from Monolith and Warner Bros. optimized for NVIDIA graphics cards. Penultimate graphics settings profile «High», built-in benchmark.

Total War: Rome II is a historical strategy from Creative Assembly that depends not only on the performance of the video card, but also on the number of cores and the frequency of the CPU. Penultimate graphics settings profile «Ultra» (whereas the maximum profile is called «Limit»), built-in benchmark.

Sniper Elite 3 is a tactical shooter from the Rebellion studio that supports Mantle technology, which allows you to get a slightly higher frame rate on AMD video cards. Maximum graphics settings profile «Ultra», built-in benchmark.

World of Tanks is a multiplayer arcade tank simulator from Wargaming.net. It also depends heavily on the processor, but not so much on the number of cores as on the clock frequency. Frame rate was measured using the Fraps app. Graphics settings profile «Maximum».

Battlefield 4 is the latest part of the multiplayer military shooter from the DICE studio (the new Battlefield Hardline was developed by Visceral Games). Supports AMD Mantle technology. Testing was carried out in the «Conquest (Large)» mode on the «Siege of Shanghai» map. Penultimate graphics settings profile «High», Fraps app.

GTA V , Rockstar’s shooter/racing/RPG hybrid, has finally made it to the PC platform and made it into our test games list right away. There are no ready-made graphics settings profiles in this game, so the quality we set can be described as medium-high (texture quality is “High”, FXAA is on, MSAA is off, etc.). Fraps was used instead of the benchmark built into the game.

Test results

In all seven games we tested, the MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming delivered an average frame rate of 45 FPS and above (Unigine Valley with 22 FPS is a synthetic benchmark). At the same time, in all games, except for GTA V, high graphics settings were set, and in Sniper Elite 3 and World of Tanks, they were set to the maximum. Even in the fast-paced multiplayer shooter Battlefield 4 at high settings, the average frame rate was 55 FPS. True, there were significant FPS drawdowns, so for a comfortable game, perhaps, it is worth lowering the graphics settings to «Medium». Manual overclocking had a positive effect on the performance of the video card: the frame rate increased by an average of 12 percent. This allowed, for example, in Tomb Raider and Sniper Elite 3 to overcome the 60 FPS mark.

Average frame rate

Game or benchmark / graphics settings Rated frequencies Acceleration Growth
Unigine Valley, Extreme HD 22 26 18
Tomb Raider, Excellent 57 64 12
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, High 46 52 13
Total War: Rome II, Ultra 41 46 12
Sniper Elite 3, Ultra 59 66 12
World of Tanks, «Maximum» 51
Battlefield 4 Tall 55
GTA V medium-high 45

Conclusions

The MSI GTX 750 Ti Gaming graphics card proved to be an excellent economy class solution that can handle any modern game at worst at medium, and at best at high graphics settings. Unlike the very weak GTX 750, the GTX 750 Ti has a year or two of performance headroom. Manual overclocking can further extend the life cycle of this video card. Fortunately, the cold 60-watt GTX 750 Ti has great overclocking potential.

Benefits:

  • high performance for the price
  • quiet and efficient cooling system
  • energy saving
  • no need for additional power
  • good overclocking potential, especially memory

Disadvantages:

  • factory overclock could be higher than
