Recall that NVIDIA introduced the GTX 750 Ti back in 2014. The combination of Maxwell’s GM107 GPU with support for 640 CUDA cores, 2 GB of GDDR5 memory and an adequate price tag of $149 made this video card a welcome guest in mainstream gaming systems.

But over time, more and more games, even at minimum settings, require more than 2 GB of video memory. And now on sale you can find 4-gig versions of the GTX 750 Ti. So we decided to evaluate both options in practice in order to answer the question: “Can a larger amount of video memory breathe a second life into an already outdated video card?”.

Recently, a large number of laptops for work and play have appeared on sale. All items can be purchased on credit. Take a look yourself — you might find something interesting for yourself.

Let’s move on to the video cards themselves. The classic 2-gig version is presented in the version from MSI . She received a small, within 5%, factory overclocking of the GPU and a simple cooler with a heatsink and one axial fan. The length of the video card is only 165 mm — it will fit in compact cases. Power consumption does not exceed 75 W, which means that additional power is not required.

The 4GB version of the GTX 750 Ti in this test is the creation of AFOX . The engineers must have used four 8Gb memory chips instead of the standard 4Gb to increase the overall capacity. Also, the video card will please with a more powerful 2-fan cooling system. But its clock speeds are standard.

Now let’s go through the test bench configuration. It is based on the 8-core processor AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT . Even at face value, it will not limit the capabilities of video cards of this class.

The ASUS TUF B450-PRO GAMING motherboard successfully coped with two tasks: to ensure the stable operation of all components now and to ensure compatibility with similar video cards in future tests.

For ease of assembly and efficient cooling of the processor, a 3-section CBO NZXT Kraken X73 was installed.

RAM is represented by the 16 GB kit DDR4-3600 Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro .

Windows 10, game clients and some games were written to a Kingston NV1 terabyte M.2 SSD.

The remaining games fit on a 2 terabyte Kingston KC2500 .

The power supply was immediately taken more reliable and with a margin — Seasonic FOCUS PX-650 . It is 80 PLUS Platinum certified, fully modular cabling, a reliable FDB fan and a 10 year warranty.

All this stuff was collected in a beautiful and spacious case Lian Li O11 Dynamic . It supports motherboards up to E-ATX, CPU coolers up to 155mm high and graphics cards up to 420mm long.

To improve the temperature inside, a set of three fans Lian Li UNI FAN SL120 was added.

The image was displayed on the monitor AOC U2790PQU , and the gameplay itself was recorded by an external system with AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K , i.e. without loss of performance.

Let’s move on to the tests. We deliberately ditched objective gaming benchmarks in favor of subjective real-world gameplay to showcase the GTX 750 Ti in practice and share live gaming experiences.

Let’s start with an error in Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla . The game refused to start, citing the fact that the video card does not support DirectX12. Although other projects in this API started without problems.

We will get to them a little later, but for now let’s look at simpler games. Dota 2 in both cases is comfortably played in Full HD with high graphics quality. The performance of the classic 2-gig version is slightly higher due to the factory overclocking of the GPU. Otherwise, everything is smooth, responsive and pleasant.

For starters, Sea of ​​Thieves launched at 900p with the lowest Cursed graphics preset. In both cases, we got the same performance with an average speed of 65 FPS. We did not notice any difference in sensations: the video sequence is quite smooth and the control does not lag.

On a 4-gigabyte GTX 750 Ti, you can raise the textures to a mythical level, but it’s hard to see the difference in the picture in dynamics.

Alternatively, you can drop down to 720p and select the «Normal» quality preset. The level of comfort of the gameplay will not suffer. The quality of the graphics improves up close, but the background becomes more blurry.

World of Tanks in Full HD at the maximum preset, if possible, reserves more than 2 GB of video memory. It is logical to assume that a 4-gigabyte video card will give a higher frame rate. However, in practice, the frequency of the GPU plays a big role. In general, the gameplay impressions are equally positive, but the classic version of the map turned out to be a little faster.

Warframe in Full HD with an improved engine and a low quality preset pleases with smooth visuals and predictable controls. Frame skips sometimes, but without critical consequences. The average speed on a 2-gigabyte video card is higher.

If you want to go to the middle preset, no problem! We go down to 900p and turn on the classic engine. The quality of the graphics is improved at the cost of a drop in picture clarity. There are no complaints about the smoothness of the video sequence. The performance of 2 and 4 GB video cards are on the same level.
