Golden Orb Socket 370 / FCPGA Cooler Review

After going «retro» with my last cooler review, I’ve
decided on reviewing something more contemporary. Here’s where the Thermaltake Golden Orb,
comes into play. This is an interesting cooler indeed. It promises
good cooling (comparable to an Alpha,) but without the annoying hindrance of
an inflated price tag (it sells for about $20 CDN / $14 USD).

As I was busy working away at the store today, the Fed-Ex guy dropped off the
Golden Orb. Being accustomed to somewhat elaborate Alpha packages (and
reciprocal installations.) The Golden Orb surprised me; as this cooler comes
in a very lean package. The Golden Orb comes fully assembled; it even includes
a tiny bit of heat sink paste already applied to the base of the heat sink. The
installation instructions are printed inside the box. The only other thing that
is included with the Golden Orb is the plastic cover to protect the clips, and
heat sink paste.

Appearance:

As you can see from the picture, the Golden Orb is one funky looking device.
Golden Orb type coolers are truly unique from the gamut of standard socket
coolers, as the `gold’ coloured heat sink looks different, from the more common
black, and silver designs. Additionally the heat sink has fins orbiting the fan.
Finally, the clipping system is also unique, because you simply place the clips
atop the CPU socket, and turn it left to lock it into place. Another refreshing
change is that this cooler does NOT block any DIMM slots when mounted on a
FC-PGA converter board in my Soyo 6VCA motherboard (upcoming review!)

    Quick
    Specs:

  • 69mm (diameter) X 48mm (height)
  • fan is a 12V device, 43X25mm,
    19.1CFM
  • material is aluminum
  • fan has RPM monitor

Installation:

1: Take the cooler out of the box.
2: Remove the plastic cover.
3: Place the clips in place atop the CPU, and socket.
4: Turn it sideways (to the left,) to secure it.
5: Plug the 3-pin power connector into the motherboard (CPU fan header.)

The Rig:

Since I’m the only one in my household that has a FC-PGA
CPU to use, I decided to use my own computer to test out the golden Orb.
Motherboard: Soyo 6VCA (can read the CPU temperature directly, without an external diode.) FC-PGA Converter: Asus S370-133. CPU: FC-PGA
Intel Celeron 566 @ 935mhz (8.5X110mhz)

The
Thermaltake Golden Orb
Bright
and Shiny Heavy-Metal Cooling

High
Performance CPU Cooling and Heat Sinks
themselves, have literally become an art
form over the past few years.   From
wild water cooled rigs to simplistic brute
force multi high speed fan set-ups, many
inventions have been mothered by the
overclocking community’s relentless need
to eliminate heat from their CPUs and
cases.

Many
innovative designs of heat sinks, some
even with exotic metal alloy combinations,
have been brought to market.  With
each new iteration of CPU technology it
seems as if the cooling folks are right
behind with a better way to cool these new
CPUs.  This is a look at the
Thermaltake Golden Orb, a Socket 370 and
FC-PGA  Cooler that is truly, in
every essence of the word, a design
«revolution».  When the
folks at Plycon
sent us this unit for review, we were more
than impressed at first glance.
First impressions are usually fairly
accurate.

Not
to sound too corny here folks but in this
case, a picture is really worth a thousand
words.  This thing just plain looks
cool!  I mean that in all aspects of
the word «cool» as well.
It looks like it will do a killer job of
drawing heat out of your CPU and is damn
impressive to behold.  The weight of
the unit is fairly chunky as well but not
as overboard as some.

One
of these Orbs is not like the others!!!!

(Click

OOOhhh!!!
You meant an «Orb» not an «Orbb»
????  🙂  ( sorry, just had to
throw that in there)

The design
is based somewhat on the HP
(now called Agilent Technologies)
«Polar Logic — Turbo Cooler»
technology.  The spiral design is
similar but also different in some
respects since the fins are much
thinner.  Perhaps they allow better
air flow through the device this
way.  I am not too sure about this
though, having not seen a Polar Logic unit
up close.  Either way, this
«Turbine» sort of design really
channels air through the the sink.
The fan blows into the unit and air is
distributed out through the fins very
evenly and efficiently.   The box
notes that it has an «Ultra
Quite» fan but I would differ with
that.  It is not as loud as some I
have heard but there is definitely as
whiney sort of turbine sound to the
unit.  However, it is not to the
point of being an annoyance at all.

The
3 pin power fan connector is not nearly as
long at it should be.  As long as you
have a spare motherboard three pin power
header near by, it should not pose a
problem.  If you have to go across
the motherboard to a power source, you
will most likely require an
extension.  I used a three pin power
connector splitter to act as an extension
for our unit.  These can be found at
any good shop or super store that carries
this type of miscellaneous stuff.

Also of
note, is the little white square pad of
CPU interface material that is applied to
the back of the heat sink before it is
shipped out of the factory.  This
material is Bergquist
Hi-Flow2000U and
I can assure you, you DON’T want to remove
this stuff and add your own paste.
This is extremely good thermal interface
material and actually doesn’t get too
gooey but remains viscous (oooh there is a
dictionary term for you!  it means
«thick» 🙂 ) when it gets
hot.  It does a nice job of staying
on the sink and interfacing to the top
slug of a CPU.  I would venture to
say that this stuff is better than any
average thermal paste you can find.

So
let’s slap this thing on a CPU, shall we?

    planting and care in the open field, the role of the variety in landscape design, growing from seeds and propagation

    The bright yellow lush flowers of rudbeckia are a wonderful perennial decoration for the garden. The plant, the most popular variety of which is also called Golden Balls, blooms in open ground from July to October. A common feature of rudbeckia is the ease of planting and caring for the crop. Experts share recommendations on what you need to know about growing this flower.

    Description: varieties and varieties of rudbeckia

    Rudbeckia is a genus of flowering plants discovered by Carl Linnaeus. These flowers were brought to Europe from across the Atlantic. In the wild, the culture has several types:

    • dissected;
    • hairy;
    • bright;
    • glossy.

    Rudbeckia dissected and became the basis for the most sought-after ornamental variety Goldball or Golden Ball.

    This is a perennial plant about 2-2.5 m high. How it looks can be seen in the photo:

    1. The leaves are strongly dissected, green.
    2. Inflorescences dense, spherical, about 10 cm in diameter. They consist of tubular petals in the center and reed petals around. nine0020
    3. Double flowers. Color is bright yellow.

    Perennial rudbeckia

    There is another variety — Goldquelle, which is also popularly called the Golden Ball. Its difference in height: a herbaceous plant grows only up to 0.8-0.9 m. Breeders have eliminated a significant drawback of the Goldball variety — the tendency of tall shoots to deviate in different directions under the weight of inflorescences. This feature harms the beauty of a flower bed or flower garden.

    Golden Balls: planting a plant

    Rudbeckia is a viable plant even without proper care. Golden balls grow normally in partial shade, although they will still feel better in a sunny area. Before planting, dig the soil 20-30 cm and remove all weeds. Then apply compost or humus (about 5 kg per 1 sq. M) and complex mineral fertilizer. nine0076

    The best time to plant this way is May. The plant will flower in the same season. Landing is carried out as follows:

    • make holes on the ridge with an interval of 30-50 cm;
    • deepen and dig in the seedling;
    • water;
    • It is not necessary to compact the soil.

    Attention! Regular watering will be necessary for a young plant until it takes root and takes root in the ground.

    Rudbeckia dissected can also be grown from seeds. The soil should be light, preferably slightly acidic or neutral. Seed planting is carried out in the second half of June. nine0076 Flowering variety Golden balls

    Seeds are placed on the bed, without deepening, at a distance of 15 cm between them. Sprinkle them with a thin layer of soil on top and moisten thoroughly. In autumn, small bunches of greenery will grow on the site, and next spring they should be planted at 40-50 cm.

    Attention! With the seed method of propagation, the plant blooms only after a year, but earlier than the Golden Balls planted by the vegetative method.

    Care, fertilization and top dressing of rudbeckia. Diseases and pests

    How to care for Golden Balls outdoors:

    1. Rudbeckia is considered a drought-resistant perennial. But in the heat it is better to increase the intensity of watering. Otherwise, the plant will lose its attractiveness.
    2. In November, after flowering, cut off the entire above-ground part, leaving 8-10 cm from the stems.
    3. Rudbeckia grows rapidly in open ground and can oppress neighboring crops. Consider this feature at the planting stage: dig a root barrier around the plants or pick up a remote place. nine0020
    4. About once every 5 years the flower needs thinning. Delete everything you see fit.
    5. The plant does without winter shelter.

    Golden ball fertilizer is recommended to be applied twice a season:

    • in May, before flowering;
    • at the end of summer or the first days of autumn.

    Rudbeckia grows well

    Use any mineral fertilizer complex to grow flowering plants. Top dressing will make flowering more lush and bright. nine0076

    Rudbeckia is completely resistant to pests and diseases. In a very neglected form, the plant can be affected by powdery mildew — a white coating on the greenery. Care in this case consists in spraying with liquid copper sulphate (8 g / l) or colloidal sulfur. Brown spots on the foliage are a sign of infection with a leaf nematode. In this case, spray the bushes with Bazamid or Nemaphos.

    Golden balls: plant propagation

    Rudbeckia will grow in the open ground by self-sowing even without human intervention. For cultural propagation, you can buy ready-made seedlings in the store. And you can get it yourself. If you plant seeds in pots in March, you will see flowers in the same year:

    1. Stratify 3 weeks before planting. To do this, place the material in the refrigerator for 3 weeks, and then hold it in room heat for a couple of days.
    2. Use a combination of ordinary garden soil with humus and sand as a substrate.
    3. Insert planting material 3 mm deep. The distance between the seeds is at least 10 cm. Cover with foil or glass.
    4. Water lightly. Ventilate and moisten the soil until seedlings appear.

    Expect seedlings by the end of the second week. Their care consists in:

    • keeping the topsoil moist;
    • provide abundant lighting;
    • outdoor hardening at t not lower than +15 °C.

    Rudbeckia is easy to care for

    After reaching a height of 20 cm, the seedlings are ready for transplanting into open ground. If you have a ready-made adult plant, you can get several full-fledged samples from it. Reproduction by division is carried out in spring or autumn:

    1. Dig up a bush.
    2. Use a sharp tool to cut the rhizome apart. If it is hard to see, shake off the ground and rinse.
    3. For all parts to be viable, each must have at least 2 adult shoots.
    4. In the new place, deepen the plant by 9-10 cm. Add a portion of humus to the soil.
    5. Pack the soil and water the transplanted bush thoroughly.

    Attention! Rudbeckia, propagated in this way, will also bloom next season. nine0076

    Rudbeckia: combination with other plants

    Golden Ball will delight you with beautiful flowering in one place for many years. In open ground, it is planted where the flower bed is not updated every season. Its decorating properties are used when landing:

    • near walls and fences;

    Rudbeckia Golden balls will perfectly decorate any corner of the garden

    • against the background of green corners, areas with tall shrubs;
    • near benches and gazebos.
