    • Geforce GTX 1080 and Geforce GTX 1070 — the first 1000-series gaming graphics cards with the latest Pascal architecture and 16nm process technology.

Perhaps we’ll start with them, because in terms of its capabilities, the GTX 1080 claims a significant lead over both current Nvidia flagships. Here are the currently known characteristics of new products along with Titan X,

    176 128 ? 160(?)

    * Based on official Nvidia presentation. According to unofficial data — 6.14 ** According to unofficial data *** According to other data — 4.6

First of all, the significant reduction in power consumption of the GTX 1080 compared to the flagships of last year (180 W vs 250 W) attracts attention — and this despite 1.6x clock speed increase. Thanks incl. the latter circumstance, the performance of the GTX 1080 exceeded even the most productive gaming card in the world, last year’s GTX Titan X. Judging by the graph at the presentation, the difference is 20-25%, and in virtual reality applications, in combination with the use of technologies announced today, the performance increase becomes twofold . Two things obviously played a major role in reducing power consumption: the new process technology and the new GPU architecture.

The release price of the GTX 1080 ($599) was not only lower than the GTX Titan X ($999), but also the GTX 980 Ti ($649). Comparison with the latter is perhaps more correct, since in games it has about the same performance as the Titan X.

Compared to its predecessor, the GTX 980, the GTX 1080 has slightly increased power consumption (180 W vs 165 W) and price ($599). vs $549), but at the same time surpasses the GTX 980 SLI in performance, i.e. two combined GTX 980.

Nvidia has chosen GDDR5X over HBM2 as the video memory standard for the GTX 1080. Recall that the latter is used in its first video card with Pascal architecture and 16-nanometer lithography, Tesla P100. The graphics card has five display outputs: 3 x DisplayPort 1.4, 1 x HDMI 2.0B and 1 x DVI. To connect a second card, you will need a new standard connector, SLI HB.

The GTX 1080 will go on sale May 27th and the GTX 1070 on June 10th. Both cards can also be purchased in a special edition, which differs from the traditional one by a higher frequency and, accordingly, performance. Overclocked to 2 GHz GTX 1080 costs $699 (while it still uses air cooling), and the GTX 1070 overclocked to an unnamed frequency is $449.

As we said above, Nvidia introduced several new technologies along with new graphics cards. A feature of the Pascal architecture is support for Simultaneous Multi-Projection — simultaneous multi-projection, when the video card displays the same image from several (up to 16) independent viewing angles. This is especially true in the game on three monitors, which reproduce, for example, the view from the inside of a racing car. Traditionally, the image is displayed in such a way as if the monitors were in a row. It would be more reasonable to put them in a semicircle, but then there is a visual distortion — you look at the image from one angle, formed from the calculation of the view from a different angle. Until now, this could have been avoided with multiple graphics cards, but now, thanks to increased performance, Nvidia has made this possible with a single graphics card.

Simultaneous Multi-Projection forms the basis of two other technologies, Lens Matched Shading and Single Pass Stereo, which greatly optimize the graphics rendering process on two displays in VR glasses. It is thanks to their use that the performance of the GTX 1080 in virtual reality devices exceeds the Titan X twice. Nvidia also announced several new technologies that have become an extension of VRWorks and PhysX and formed the VR Funhouse toolkit. In particular, we are talking about VRWorks Audio, which provides a more reliable sound distribution in virtual space that complies with the laws of acoustics. The company expects that VR Funhouse will make VR immersion more realistic.

Another technology, Ansel is a tool that, by embedding it into their new games, developers will allow gamers to create very effective screenshots by setting the desired angle and point of view, applying filters and photo enlargement. The latter will be possible thanks to a 32-fold increase in the resolution of the screenshot taken (up to 8 gigapixels) compared to the resolution of the game itself. Screenshots can be made panoramic and stereoscopic, with subsequent viewing not only on a PC, but also on a virtual reality device and even on a smartphone.

GeForce GTX 980 Ti versus Radeon R9 Fury X at WQHD

This summer, NVIDIA and AMD updated their line of graphics accelerators, introducing new top-level solutions. The performance bar has once again been raised to a new level. The GeForce GTX Titan X video adapter took off to the top of the «Olympus», which received the status of an exclusive premium product. In the segment of mass serial solutions, the leader from NVIDIA is the GeForce GTX 980 Ti. And competitors from AMD introduced the Radeon R9Fury X with a completely new type of memory. We will talk about these two video cards in this review, compare their technical features and conduct a major gaming test at a resolution of 2560×1440.

    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti

but operates with a large number of computing units. Maxwell chips are based on Graphics Processing Cluster (GPC) data processing clusters. GM206 (GeForce GTX 960) there are two, the GM204 has four, and the GM200 already has six. The cluster structure is the same in every device. Within the cluster, compute units are grouped into four SMMs, where each SMM has 128 compute CUDA-cores and 8 texture units. As a result, GM200 has 3072 cores and 192 texture units. The processor has a large 3 MB L2 cache and 96 ROPs.

Six memory controllers communicate with external memory via a 384-bit bus. And thanks to the new data encoding algorithm, the efficiency of such a bus is even higher. An example is the GeForce GTX 9 graphics card.60, which with a 128-bit bus easily competes with the old 256-bit models.

The full power of the GM200 can be demonstrated within the GeForce GTX Titan X. This graphics «monster» has all the processing units active, and the amount of memory reaches an impressive 12 GB. For a more mass product, part of the computing units was donated. The GeForce GTX 980 Ti has two SMMs disabled, so the total number of CUDA-cores is 2816, texture units are 176. But there were no cuts in the bus or cache size. The amount of memory is reduced to 6 GB, which is also quite a lot.

The base GPU clock is set to 1000 MHz and the average Boost Clock is set to 1075 MHz. This means that if the power and temperature limits are not exceeded, the processor will tend to work at higher frequencies. When the limits are reached, the frequency gradually decreases, but not below the base level. These are the features of GPU Boost technology. The effective data exchange frequency for GDDR5 memory corresponds to the value of 7012 MHz. Note that these frequency characteristics are valid for the GeForce GTX 980 Ti, and for GeForce GTX Titan X.

Let’s take a look at the device itself, for which we will partially use demo photos from NVIDIA.

The reference version of the GeForce GTX 980 Ti is made in the usual style: a silver case with black accents, a transparent window above the heatsink and a radial fan. The length of such a card is 27 centimeters.

On the side there is a large illuminated inscription GeForce GTX. To connect external power, there are two connectors — 6 and 8 pins. There are two connectors for SLI.

A choice has been made in favor of modern graphical interfaces. There is one DVI left, but there are three DisplayPort 1.2 standards and one HDMI 2.0.

The housing consists of several parts that are screwed together. If desired, all this can be disassembled without completely dismantling the cooler from the board.

The cooler works like a turbine, expelling hot air outside the housing. The entire board is completely covered by its base, which is in contact with the memory chips and transistors of the supply circuit. On the other hand, a small ribbed block radiator is soldered onto this plate. So the VRM cooling is powerful and thoughtful.

The main heat sink that contacts the GPU is independent of the base plate. Its own base is an evaporation chamber that works on the principle of heat pipes and ensures maximum heat transfer throughout the area.

The board somewhat resembles the old top solutions from NVIDIA, but with enhanced power supply. The processor is powered by six phases, the memory is powered by two phases.

The processor is marked GM200-310-A1. All its characteristics will once again be illustrated by a screenshot of the GPU-Z utility. Please note that the version of the video driver does not match the one used for the tests. Description of the test configuration will be below.

A 601 mm² graphics chip with 8 billion transistors generates a significant amount of heat. The standard cooler handles the cooling within reasonable limits, but don’t expect it to be impossible. Under gaming load, operating temperatures reach up to 84 ° C with a temperature limit of 83 ° C. To maintain this mode, the fan spins up to 2500 rpm and above, creating a certain hum. This noise can be assessed as moderate.

With the declared average Boost of 1075 MHz, the peak frequency reaches 1202 MHz. In some applications, the video card works for a short time at frequencies close to this value, but after warming up, it starts to abruptly reset them. This behavior is illustrated below with screenshots from MSI Afterburner. On the left side is a screenshot of parameters monitoring during tests in War Thunder. There’s a stepped graph of the GPU frequency when going from level 1190 MHz to 1025 MHz is almost instantaneous. But in most cases, the frequency change is smoother, and the final frequency line resembles a curve. This can be seen in the right screenshot from Metro Last Light. In this test, the overall frequency level is lower, in the range of 1150-1050 MHz, occasionally dropping lower.

For overclocking, the power limit has been increased to the maximum, the fan speed has been increased to 80%. As a result, the base value was raised to 1258 MHz with peak Boost up to 1460 MHz. An impressive result, almost at the level of solutions based on the junior GM204. Memory overclocked to 3960 MHz (resulting in an effective value of 7920 MHz).

In some tests, the Boost frequency approached the maximum level, in the heaviest applications there were drawdowns below 1400 MHz. Among those is Last Light. The behavior of the video card in this test is illustrated by the upper screenshot.

    AMD Radeon R9 Fury X

Now let’s move on to the top Radeon. For illustrations, this time we will use exclusively photographs of the manufacturer.

This graphics accelerator is unique due to the use of progressive memory HBM and CBO as default cooling. HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) technology is the next stage in the development of graphics accelerators, and the first to introduce it into AMD’s mainstream products. HBM memory was designed with the goal of increasing memory bandwidth while reducing power consumption. Physically, these are 4 multilayer memory banks, which are located directly on the processor substrate, forming one device with it. Each bank communicates with the processor via a 1024-bit bus through a special conductor layer. Common memory interface 4096 bits A physical frequency of 500 MHz results in a DDR value of 1000 MHz. The result is a significant increase in overall throughput, and thanks to the new technology and low operating voltage, power consumption is reduced.

By switching to HBM, it was possible to simplify the structure of memory controllers and increase the total number of computing units in the new Fiji processor. It uses the new version GCN architecture, operating 15 Compute Units, which are grouped into 4 Shader Engine processing arrays. Fiji has an impressive number of minimum computing units, including 4096 pieces and 256 texture blocks. The previous AMD Hawaii processor had 2816 stream processors and 176 texture units.

But the memory is limited to 4 GB, which can become a bottleneck when using ultra-high resolutions. The

Radeon R9 Fury supports the new DirectX 12 at Feature level 12_0, while the GeForce GTX 980 Ti supports Feature level 12_1 with some additional features. However, only time will tell the relevance of this.

Having coped with the task of increasing power, AMD engineers have taken a radical approach to the issue of cooling, having equipped the Fury X with a liquid cooling system. This requires an external unit with a heatsink and fan that communicates with the video card with two braided hoses. But the card itself turned out to be compact, 19.5 centimeters long.

The plastic case with a soft soft-touch coating completely covers the video card. Monitors can be connected via one HDMI or three DisplayPorts, DVI has been completely eliminated. The old HDMI 1.4 interface is supported.

The processor with memory is covered with a water block with a built-in pump. The board is covered with a heat sink plate, the efficiency of which is further improved by a copper tube in contact with the base in the VRM area and included in the common water circuit.

The liquid is cooled in a radiator, which is blown by a 120 mm fan. The length of the hoses allows you to place a heatsink above the video card on the rear wall of the case. The presence of a large air cooler can create problems with this arrangement of the radiator.

The complex structure of the compact board can be seen below. It’s full of elements. The core power system has six phases, the memory is powered by two phases. External power is connected via two 8-pin connectors.

Fiji processor running at 1050 MHz, effective memory frequency 1000 MHz. The presence of CWO has a positive effect on temperatures and noise. The GPU only warmed up to 60°C at an average fan speed of 1200-1300 rpm.

The frequency of the Radeon GPU also changes dynamically based on power and temperature limits. But with such powerful cooling in the Radeon R9 Fury X, you get an absolutely stable 1050 MHz on the core.

Moderate acceleration. All that we managed to squeeze out was 1095/1120 MHz for the core and memory. And even for this mode, we had to increase the fan speed in order to maintain stability in all tests.
