Overclocking GTX 660 Ti — Suggestions?
Hi Guys.
I’d start to mess around with my gfx last night, in order to OC it a bit.
I researched a bit and got following programs to help me through:
GPU-Z
MSI Afterburner
FurMark
Heaven Benchmark
I started slowly increase Core clock 10mhz at a time until i’d reach +50 Core Clock and then my Heaven Benchmark got a black screen in between 5-8 scene. The blackscreen appears cause my monitor plugs out (well iit looks like if i was taking the plug to the monitor, and put it back in — like it disconnects itselfs) — Allthough it comes back after a few seconds, and it was dropped to around 3-5 fps as my min. fps and i can finish the benchmark. But throughout my researched i knew i had to look for 3 things in my Heaven progress: Artifacs, Black Screens or GFX crashs <- if that happened my OC would be unstable.
So i thought that «black screen/disconncetion of my monitor» was unstability OC. <— Am i right or wrong here btw?
I’d then try mess around with my voltage to see if i THEN could increase my core clock a bit more. But as soon as i go higher than +50 core clock value, i get blackscreen, EVEN with +100 voltage & max power limit ( 123% ).
EDIT: Just did some more tweaking, and tryi’d to adjust only the power supply to 110% ontop oo my already stable OC (coreclock50mhz/110mem clock) and my Heaven gets the black screen again, just on a later scene. HUH?
Im just thinking there must be somethiing wrong here… Cause in my researched i’ve seen that everytime my OC get unstable (ex. blackscreen) i should add increments of core voltage, and then increments of core clock — just doesnt seems to work like that for me.
My current working stable OC is following:
Default: GPU Clock: 941mhz — Memory: 1502mhz — Boost Clock: 1020mhz
OC: GPU Clock: 991mhz — Memory: 1557mhz — Boost Clock: 1070mhz (+50 coreclock / +110mem clock)

I did some more tweaking, but this time on the GPU Memory clock side. I got it up to 650mhz, and when i hit 700mhz my heaven benchmark starts to hang (fps drops alot).
My benchmark looked like this:

I just dont quite understand why i can’t turn up my voltage or power limit without itt starts the blackscreen as described earlier.

Video cards from NVIDIA annually conquer the world. Some remain successful projects even after a few years, some are only a replacement for previous generations. The company tries to be the first in everything. To compete with AMD, it goes to great lengths. So, one model just changes the name, the second — the volume, the third — the number of texture units. Why did the GTX 660 Ti appear?
History
It so happened that after the release of the GeForce GTX 680 and 670 2 GB, the company spent a long time developing a model that could compete with the Radeon HD 7870 and 7850. And if the above options from NVIDIA seemed like good contenders, they could not forever be in the race for superiority, since they were long out of production, and stocks were exhausted in warehouses.

Asus version
So, Asus GTX 660 Ti appeared a year after the introduction of the reference version on the market. It was delivered in a massive box with a corporate design. It indicates the main characteristics: there is a proprietary cooling system, memory capacity, the presence of factory overclocking, etc.
Inside the manufacturer placed two adapters, a software disk and a user manual. No more surprises for the buyer did not have to wait. On the other hand, inside there is everything you need that the user will need.
Appearance of Asus

As mentioned earlier, in the box the user is offered a card with factory overclocking. But the improvements affected only the core frequency. As a result, it increased from 915 to 967 MHz. If you use Boost Clock, then it will become 1046 MHz. The memory remained at its declared frequency of 6008 MHz. That is, we can safely say that in this model, factory overclocking is considered, rather, a marketing ploy, as it raises performance by only 5-6%.
Additional overclocking increased the core clock to 1102 MHz and the memory to 6976 MHz. At the same time, we had to slightly increase the fan speed, since before overclocking the temperature could rise to 70 degrees. Of course, such an indicator is not critical, but for effective improvement it is still desirable to strengthen the cooling system.
Model from Gigabyte
The next modification of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti is presented by Gigabyte. It was packed in a branded box, decorated with a company logo. The front shows information about the type of memory and its amount. There is also information about the presence of factory overclocking and a proprietary cooling system, which has already been seen previously in other models from this manufacturer.
There is a lot of information on the back of the box regarding the presence of specific technologies, there are several diagrams, concept descriptions, specifications and system requirements for the video card. There is nothing extra inside the box. The user manual and two adapters are modestly placed here.
Appearance Gigabyte
The interface does not differ from the Asus model. There are also two DVI connectors and one each for HDMI and DisplayPort. The textolite of the board received a blue color. From this manufacturer, the GeForce GTX 660 Ti turned out to be larger, so when buying, you need to pay attention to the dimensions. The length of the device is almost 27 centimeters.
The power here has also changed four phases to six. The board has connectors for SLI bridges. The cooling system is very different from the reference model. The manufacturer has redesigned it. It is the difference in the cooling system that also distinguishes two modifications of this card from Gigabyte.
The first version has two fans and heat pipes, while the more expensive version has three fans and three heat pipes. Generally speaking, the main advantage of the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 660 Ti is the cooling system. It turned out to be very complete and dispersed throughout the board.

This model, like its reference version, has a GK104 processor, which operates on a 28 nm process technology. Inside are the same 1344 shader units, 112 texture units and 24 raster units.
Memory, as in most modifications, 2 GB. It consists of eight chips of 256 MB. Their frequency is 6008 MHz. The card operates at manufacturer’s recommended frequencies of 1033 MHz. This model, like the previous one, does not have significant factory overclocking. But the additional improvement showed very good results.
On average, productivity was increased by 10%. The frequency of the graphics core has risen to 1105 MHz, which is an excellent indicator compared to the reference version. The maximum core frequency reached 1183 MHz. The memory also managed to be increased to 7024 MHz, which amounted to almost a 20% increase.
As a result, relative to previous versions, this one showed excellent overclocking potential. By the way, it was this version that received the most flattering reviews. Most likely due to its overclocking potential. Also, Gigabyte has created an excellent cooling system that regulates heat and improves the efficiency of the video card.
Twin from ZOTAC
It should be said that this model is almost a copy in relation to Gigabyte GTX 660 Ti. Both modifications received factory overclocking. They have exactly the same performance. However, they were different in some way.
By the way, the video card from this manufacturer appeared before anyone else. She was placed in a very bright box, made in the company’s colors. In front, as usual, all the most important characteristics are indicated, as well as the main advantages. The difference between ZOTAC and Gigabyte
As mentioned earlier, the GTX 660 Ti video card from these two manufacturers turned out to be identical in terms of performance. The ZOTAC variant comes with an improved memory frequency up to 6608 MHz. The rest of the figures are the same.
But the situation changes after additional overclocking. The graphics core receives a frequency of 1083 MHz, and the memory — 6968 MHz. As a result, the performance rose only by 3.5%, which, in comparison with the version from Gigabyte, is insignificant. Of course, testing has shown that frequencies can increase even more, but then there is a risk of instability of the entire system.
Competitor MSI
And the last modification considered was the MSI GTX 660 Ti video card. This option is also competitive among others. In addition, it has its own features and benefits.
The box in which the card is delivered turned out to be original. It has a hinged lid, under which there is a window in which you can observe the accelerator itself. All packaging is painted with a huge amount of information. There are special technologies, and advantages over other modifications, as well as the main characteristics, etc.
Inside the box, in addition to the video card, you can find a disk with firewood for the GTX 660 Ti. There is also a user manual, several adapters: for power and DVI connector. In principle, this is enough for any user.
Design MSI
The appearance of the board differs significantly from the reference version, and hence from many modifications. The length is almost 27 cm. The elemental base has been slightly changed, and materials have been reworked for it. The power converter has also been replaced again.
The cooling system looks very presentable. It is specially designed for this map and is called TWIN FROZR III. From this manufacturer, the GeForce GTX 660 Ti received improved specifications. This mainly concerns the amount of memory — 3 GB. Its type, as usual, is GDDR5. The frequency of the graphics core has also changed — 967 MHz, which indicates factory overclocking. The rest of the performance remained the same as the reference version.
Additional overclocking improved the core clock by 14% to 1107 MHz, and the memory improved by 15% to 6888 MHz. As a result, the card showed excellent overclocking potential and increased its performance by 12%.
Competitors
If we take any of the modifications of the GTX 660 Ti, then the version from Gigabyte can be considered the most successful model. Of course, you can also take into account the modification from MSI, but its volume was 3 GB, although this does not greatly affect performance, it is still a distinctive feature and a good advantage.
But if we take competitive models from another manufacturer, then we should point to the Radeon HD 7870, 7850 and 7950. It was these video cards that became the main competitors for the GTX 660 Ti 2Gb. As a result, as reviews and tests show, the adapter from NVIDIA is still ahead of its rivals. But this applies specifically to the reference version.
