Only a few days have passed since we met NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, and NVIDIA is already ready to please the consumer with another novelty, this time called NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 .

Based on the name of the video card, in theory it replaces the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670, which is actually stated in the presentation, but is it really so, and what place is assigned to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 in 2013 is still unknown, which we will talk about later.

NVIDIA notes that the new graphics card has more CUDA cores (compared to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670), faster video memory, now running at an effective frequency of 7010 MHz, and support for GPU Boost 2.0 technology, which was introduced together with the announcement of NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN.

Despite the fact that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 graphics card, unlike the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, is based on the already familiar NVIDIA GK104 graphics processor, NVIDIA promises a 22% increase in performance compared to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 and by 65% ​​compared to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570. In theory, this is not bad, but it leads us to think that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 is just an improved and overclocked modification of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680.

Of course, none of the presentations of a new video card is complete without comparison with competitors, and AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition plays this role for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770. Based on NVIDIA data, in gaming applications, the new product demonstrates, on average, a 10-15% higher frame rate, which is certainly commendable, but do not forget about the excellent overclocking potential of the AMD solution, as well as the cost of the new product, which may not be too humane.

We also note the declared excellent scalability of two NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770s in 2-Way SLI mode, which, again according to NVIDIA, is about 80%. Moreover, as you can see, we are promised almost the same increase in most modern popular games, which is good news, but in the future we will, of course, independently test the operation of a pair of video cards and try to either confirm or refute this statement.

As in the case of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, one of the important features of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 is the presence of a new fan controller, which should have a positive effect on the noise level of the «reference» CO. However, as you remember from the results of testing the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, its cooling system still emitted a fairly high level of noise at maximum fan speeds, like all «reference» turbine-type coolers.

Since these are all the main points that were voiced at the presentation, it’s time to go directly to the acquaintance with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770, but first, since our laboratory tested a «non-reference» version of the video card, let’s say a few words about the reference NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770.

As you can see, the new product is made in the same style as the NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780. Both the cooling system and the design of the textolite and its dimensions are completely the same. To display the image, a standard set of video outputs is used, which consists of DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort. The only information that we currently do not have is data on the element base of the «reference» video card, as well as on the design of its power system.

The MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning graphics card differs significantly from the «reference» sample. In addition to the proprietary Twin Frozr IV cooling system, MSI engineers used a PCB from MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning and a similar element base to create a video card. We also note that the video card comes with significant factory overclocking, so instead of the recommended 1046 MHz, the graphics core operates at a frequency of 1150 MHz (10% overclocking), and taking into account the work of GPU Boost 2.0, the frequency reaches, on average, 1202 MHz.

Before proceeding directly to the review of the video card, we propose to find out the main differences between the NVIDIA GK104 modification for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 compared to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680.

As you can see, GK104 itself in its initial version for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 consists of 8 SMX, 1536 CUDA cores and 128 texture modules. Oddly enough, but we see the same thing in its modification for the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 video card and, in fact, the only significant differences between the new product and last year’s flagship are higher frequencies of the graphics core and video memory, as well as support for GPU Boost 2. 0. It turns out that the new line of video cards from NVIDIA is a little strange, the cut-down version of NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN has replaced the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 at a higher price ($750 for Ukraine and Russia), while the improved version of last year’s flagship claims the second place in terms of performance. The most interesting thing for us will be to find out what kind of real performance increase we will get from the new product compared to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680. The recommended price for the new video card will also be an important factor, since buying, in fact, last year’s solution with a number of improvements, for a higher price than the current $500-550 for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680, not everyone will be ready. On the other hand, if we get a graphics card that performs better than the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680, but at the rumored price of $450, that would be a very strange move on the part of the company. Firstly, a very large free range is formed between the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 for $450 and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 for $750, and it is not known how it will be filled, and perhaps in the future we will see simplified modifications of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 with the SE index . Secondly, the $450 price kills the current sales of both the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680, which is also not the most logical step, since they can still sell well in the next few months in anticipation of the saturation of the market with versions of new products from manufacturing partners.

Packaging and Contents

The MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning graphics card comes in a standard Lightning-series graphics card box with a flip-up lid, under which there is a small viewing window. In fact, we have before us an almost complete copy of the MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning package, which we already had for testing. On the front side, in addition to color printing, you can pay attention to the name of the video card and the manufacturer’s company, an indication of the amount and type of video memory used, DirectX 11 support, and the Unlocked Digital Power logo, which indicates that the video card has a digital power system , improved element base, plus unlocked BIOS.

The reverse side of the hinged cover is fully dedicated to the listing and description of proprietary improvements and improvements in the element base of the video card.

A special module called GPU Reactor is installed on the back of the video card, which, according to MSI engineers, can significantly reduce the level of GPU voltage ripple, which in theory should have a positive effect on the overclocking potential of the video card.

The MSI N770GTX Lightning graphics card uses a reinforced power supply circuit that includes 12 phases. It also uses a digital PWM controller that supports active phase switching, which allows not only to optimize the power consumption of the video card in minimum and medium load modes, but also allows you to more accurately control the overclocking of the video card using MSI’s proprietary software — MSI Afterburner. As we said a little higher, the BIOS of the video card is unlocked, which will allow you to easily remove all restrictions on increasing the voltage when overclocking the video card using extreme cooling methods, for example, liquid nitrogen.

The element base of the video card corresponds to the Military Class III concept. Only high-quality solid-state and tantalum capacitors, «golden» SSC (Solid State Choke) chokes and CopperMOS power transistors in a copper package are used, which again should have a positive effect on the stability and overclocking potential of the video card.

Separately, it was noted that the video card complies with the concept of «3×3 OC Kits», which means that there are test points for connecting multimeter probes on the textolite for accurate voltage control during overclocking, support for increasing the voltage on the three main components of the video card (graphic core, video memory and PLL) , as well as the possibility of monitoring their temperature indicators.

Free space around the viewing window dedicated to the advantages of the proprietary Twin Frozr IV cooling system:

  • SuperPipe Technology — The video card’s cooling system uses five 8mm copper heatpipes that, thanks to SuperPipe technology, dissipate heat from the base more quickly than conventional pipes.

  • Dust Removal Technology — When you start a PC with a graphics card installed, the fans rotate in the opposite direction for the first 30 seconds, which allows you to remove accumulated dust from the cooling system.

  • Propeller Blade Technology — The specially shaped fan blades generate 20% more airflow for more efficient cooling.

  • Also separately noted is the advantage over the «reference» cooling system, both in temperature and in noise level. According to MSI, the Twin Frozr IV cooler delivers 14 degrees cooler and 5.2dB less noise.

The reverse side of the box is reserved for a short description of the main characteristics of the video card in several languages, including Russian.

Also on the reverse side is a list of system requirements for a computer in which it is planned to install the MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning. Based on them, the power supply in the system must have a power of at least 600 W, be capable of delivering at least 42 A through the 12 V power line and be equipped with two eight-pin PCI-Express power connectors.

The MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning package includes a CD with drivers and utilities, two adapters for powering the video card, three adapters for connecting multimeter probes to PCB connectors, a user manual, a DVI to VGA adapter, a certificate of quality and 2-way SLI bridge.

The MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning video card has the following set of interfaces for displaying images:

Considering the presence of a DVI-VGA adapter in the kit, and, accordingly, the trouble-free connection of an analog monitor, such a configuration of video outputs can safely be called optimal.

Appearance and element base

The MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning video card is made on a textolite absolutely identical to the MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning 280 mm long. A similar reinforced element base is also used.

Video card power stabilization system made according to the 8+3+1 phase scheme (for GPU, memory chips and VDDCI unit, respectively). As you can see, MSI is clearly following the path of unifying processes, both development and production, by making a new video card almost completely identical to last year’s MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning, which, in principle, is quite understandable and users do not suffer from this at all.

Chil 8318 is used as a PWM controller. We saw a similar one in the MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning. As we said above, this controller supports active phase switching to optimize the power consumption of the video card.

In addition to the PCI-Express slot, the graphics card is powered by two additional connectors on the side. Both connectors are 8-pin.

Also on the video card is an interesting element that is common to most video cards of the Lightning series, which is responsible for switching between different BIOS versions and has three positions.

On the right side there are three connectors for connecting multimeter probes using supplied adapters. Each of the connectors is responsible for monitoring the voltage on one of the three main components of the video card: graphics core, video memory, and PLL.

On the reverse side of the textolite, in addition to the connector for attaching the GPU Reactor module, there is an impressive number of elements of the power system and a number of LEDs that clearly illustrate the operation of the power system and the level of load on it.

The GPU Reactor module itself is a small printed circuit board with capacitors and LEDs soldered on it. According to MSI, the use of this module can significantly reduce the level of GPU supply voltage ripple, which, in theory, should have a positive effect on the overclocking potential of the video card.

One thing is for sure, if on your motherboard the slots for installing video cards are located through one, then you will not be able to install two MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning with the GPU Reactor module connected, since it significantly increases the width of the video card.

The MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning is based on the NVIDIA GK104-425-A2 (Kepler) graphics chip, manufactured using a 28 nm process technology, which consists of 8 active SMX, 1536 universal shader pipelines (CUDA cores in NVIDIA terminology) and 32 raster blocks. As we have already said, the frequency of the graphics core has been increased relative to NVIDIA’s recommendations and is 1150 MHz. Thanks to the support of the GPU Boost 2.0 technology, in turbo mode, the average frequency of the graphics core is 1202 MHz. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is carried out via a 256-bit bus.

The MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning video card has a total memory of 2 GB and is composed of 8 chips with a capacity of 256 MB each, manufactured by Samsung. The chips are marked K4G20325FD-FC28 and, according to the documentation, their nominal frequency is 7 GHz.

Cooling System

The cooling system of the MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning is exactly the same as that of the MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning. The video card with installed CO occupies two expansion slots and has a total length of 285 mm.

The cooler itself consists of a fairly large heatsink made of 58 nickel-plated aluminum plates, two fans with 100 mm blades, and a metal casing that covers the entire structure from above.

Five heat pipes, two 8 mm and three 6 mm, are used to improve heat transfer efficiency. Note that the nickel layer covers not only the radiator fins, but also the copper base and heat pipes. This should reduce the chance of possible copper oxidation, which we know is detrimental to cooling efficiency.

A separate metal plate with thermal pads is used to cool power elements of the board and memory chips. A similar element is responsible for cooling the back of the PCB.

Let’s proceed directly to testing the cooling system of the MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning video card.

With automatic fan speed control, in the maximum load mode, the graphics core heated up to 70 degrees, and the cooler, judging by the monitoring readings, worked at only half its capacity. The cooling system in this mode operates almost silently and absolutely does not stand out from other PC components.

In the maximum fan speed mode, the temperature of the GPU dropped by 8 degrees. The noise emitted by the cooling system at maximum fan speed can be described as average and quite comfortable.

When there is no load, the graphics core and memory frequencies are automatically lowered, resulting in lower power consumption and heat dissipation. The cooler in this mode works almost silently, and the temperature of the graphics core does not exceed 30 degrees.

As a result, the cooling system of the MSI GeForce GTX 770 Lightning performed exceptionally well, not only perfectly coping with the cooling of a significantly overclocked GPU, but even at maximum fan speeds it did not exceed the average noise level.
