The AMD Radeon HD 6970 and HD 6950 graphics cards were introduced simultaneously in December 2010. The first has become a new single-chip flagship, and the second is its more affordable alternative. But externally and internally, the reference versions are very similar. Both received 6 + 2-phase power subsystems and 2-slot coolers with a vapor chamber, a small one-piece heatsink and one radial fan.

The maximum temperature in games for the Radeon HD 6950 did not exceed 81°C, while for the Radeon HD 6970 it reached 89°C.

Both models feature 40nm AMD Cayman series GPUs and 2GB of GDDR5 memory. But compared to the top variant, the HD 6950 GPU lost 128 stream processors and 8 texture units. Also, the GPU clock speed decreased by 80 MHz and the effective memory speed dropped by 500 MHz. But its maximum power consumption is also lower: 200 versus 250 watts.

As a result, the peak single and double precision computing power of the Radeon HD 6950 is almost 17% lower. Let’s see if this advantage continues in games, shall we?

Even at very low settings in HD benchmark Middle-earth Shadow of War almost completely loads both video cards and eats up almost the entire video buffer. The results differ by 2-5 FPS, which in this case is equivalent to 10-15%.

Rainbow Six Siege at the same resolution, but with a medium profile, we see a similar picture. The maximum difference in average speed is 8 FPS or 13%. But the statistics of rare and very rare events differ by only 2-3 frames / s, which is equivalent to 6-9%.

Benchmrak The Crew 2 determined the winner only by the average frame rate: the results of the Radeon HD 6970 were 14% higher. And according to the rest of the statistics, the difference is zero.

As a result, it turns out that the HD 6970 is 6-14% superior to the HD 6950. Or we can say that the Radeon HD 6950 is inferior to the top version by 5-12%. Remember these numbers — they may come in handy. The point is that we didn’t start running video cards in one set of games, but decided to take different ones. So if you are wondering, for example, how much would Sabnautica give out in a system with a Radeon HD 6970, then just add 14% to the current results.

And vice versa, if your favorite Witcher is not here, then take the result of the last test and reduce it by 12%.

The following stand was used for testing:

      • Intel Core i7-7740X @ 5.0 GHz
      • Thermaltake Water 3.0 Riing RGB 240
      • ASUS TUF X299 MARK 1
      • 2 x 8 GB DDR4-2133 G.SKILL Sniper X
      • Apacer PANTHER AS330 240 GB / 960 GB
      • Seagate ST2000DX001 2TB
      • Seasonic Snow Silent 1050 1050W
      • Thermaltake Core P3
      • AOC U2879VF

An external system with AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K was used to record gameplay in Full HD resolution, i.e. without loss of performance.

If you remember, one of the main problems of old video cards is the lack of support at the driver level and optimization of the games themselves. For example, the latest stable WHQL driver for the Radeon HD 6900 series under Windows 10 was released in mid-2015, and a slightly newer beta version appeared in March 2016.

With the HD 6970 we didn’t experience any particular problems, but this time there were problems with new games. For example, Battlefield 5 first reported an incompatible video card, continued to download and asked for updates, but the Update and Not Now buttons did not work. Therefore, it was not possible to play.

Need for Speed Payback was stuck during the loading phase. We waited another 30 minutes, but the launch indicator never moved any further. Reloading and other dances with tambourines did not give anything. Star Wars Battlefrond II on the same engine, Frostbyte immediately gave a message that the driver is outdated and it will not start on such a system.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider turned out to be not so stubborn. It started at the minimum settings in HD, but artifacts in the form of black squares immediately appeared on the screen. The slightest movement of the mouse leads to the fact that they completely cover the entire screen. This is no longer a game, but an installation of contemporary art with a deep philosophical message.

These glitches spoiled our mood a little. But at the same time, many games started without problems. Let’s see how playable they are.

Let’s start with a simple Rocket League , in which all settings can be turned to the maximum and enjoy a completely comfortable gameplay. With the proper degree of dexterity and luck, you can easily score goals and save your own goal.

Released back in 2013, but actively updated to this day Path of Exile immediately suggested higher settings. But the speed dropped to 30 FPS and friezes slipped through. Therefore, I had to manually lower the quality of the shadows and turn off post-processing. After that, we got under 60 FPS without noticeable jamming.

Fans of Warframe rejoice! The game runs without problems in Full HD with a high graphics preset. The average speed exceeds 80 fps, and the rest of the statistics steps over the 60 FPS mark. Therefore, you can not be afraid of friezes and slowdowns — this is not some kind of RUST for you.

Paladins , a.k.a. Poor Man’s Overwatch, at very high settings produces an exorbitant 166 FPS on average with fully responsive controls, so you can even take on the role of a sniper. The same publisher has a battle royale project called Realm Royale on the same Unreal Engine 3, which will probably also run without problems. If, however, someone else plays it.

      Description

AMD started Radeon HD 6950 sales on December 14, 2010 at a suggested price of $299. This is a desktop video card based on TeraScale 3 architecture and 40 nm manufacturing process, primarily aimed at gamers. It has 2 GB of GDDR5 memory at 1.25 GHz, and coupled with a 256-bit interface, this creates bandwidth.

In terms of compatibility, this is a two-slot PCIe 2.0 x16 card. The length of the reference version is 267 mm. Two 6-pin additional power cables are required for connection, and the power consumption is 500 watts.

It provides poor performance in tests and games at the level of

      8.94%

from the leader, which is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.
