What is Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a single board computer that can fit entirely in the palm of your hand. Raspberry Pie was originally developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation as a low-cost platform for teaching computer science. Most Raspberry Pi models are made on a four-layer printed circuit board the size of a plastic card and do not require assembly, since all computer elements, including the processor in the form of a BGA chip, are already soldered to the motherboard. Accordingly, this type of computer has no other possibility of modernization, except for adding a few adapters and connecting usb devices that expand its functionality or increase the capabilities of the system. For example, you can add a Bluetooth module, a WI-FI modem to the Paspberry Pi in this way, increase the amount of RAM using ReadyBoost, a Microsoft software technology that allows you to increase the speed of your computer due to the memory of a connected flash drive.

A Brief History

Raspberry is developed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, a charity founded in 2009 to promote computer science education in schools.

The first model, assembled on the board of a Broadcom single-chip system, was released in 2011 as a prototype, and a year later the 10,000th “circulation” was sold among computer enthusiasts. The release of the final version of the Raspberry Pi B model began in February 2012. The price at the time of release was $35, and a year later, in February 2013, the presentation of the Raspberry Pi A costing $20 took place — the production process was reduced in cost and optimized for mass production.

Raspberry Pi “B”, Raspberry Pi “B+”, Raspberry Pi “2 model B” were released from 2012 to 2015 W. Their main differences are the price of 5 and 10 dollars, respectively, and an unmounted GPIO connector.

Raspberry Pi 3, Raspberry Pi Zero W, Raspberry Pi 3B+ were released from 2016 to 2018. The main difference between the third generation models is the presence of Wi-FI, Bluetooth, Ethernet (in the latest model, its speed can reach 1Gbps), more powerful 64-bit processors

At the end of June 2019, the Raspberry Pi 4 was released. The novelty received a complete update of the main components, including the processor, memory and interfaces, but retained the old price of $35 (63 — in the maximum configuration).

Single Board PC OS

The Raspberry Pi was originally designed to run on Linux to make it more versatile, but in 2015 Raspbian officially introduced the Raspberry Pi Foundation as the main OS for its computers. Raspbian OS is optimized for the low end ARM processors found on the latest Raspberry Pi4.

In general, in practice, the following operating systems work well on Papberry Pi (not later than the third version):

OSMC (Open Source Media Center) is the best, most functional open source multimedia software.

ARCHLINUX is a special version for Raspberry Pi. The OS is an independent general purpose distribution of GNU/Linux.

· PI MUSICBOX is a distribution based on Mopidy Music Steraming Server, a standalone streaming music player for Spotify, Google Music, SoundCloud, Webradio, podcasts and other music from the cloud.

· MOSIX (Cluster Management System) – patched Linux distribution. Programs do not need to be recompiled, and running processes can migrate across the cluster, and this happens automatically. The goal of the migration is to find nodes that have better performance and less load.

Today everyone can assemble a micro-version of a supercomputer. Ready-made assemblies (chips with racks and cooling systems) are sold on the same Aliexpress. The software is open source and free. To manage a cluster from a mini-PC, special builds of Linux are often used.

The world’s largest supercomputer of more than a thousand Raspberry Pi 3 B+ was introduced in 2019 by Oracle, a software company. The build of Oracle Autonomous Linux was used as the OS.

Computers communicated with each other via LAN ports. Ubiquiti 48-port network hubs were used for communication. To provide the installation with energy, specially designed PSUs were used.

The company does not plan to use the unit yet. For Oracle, the interest was only in the build process itself — no one had ever assembled a Paspberry Pi project on such a scale before them, so the company had to develop all hardware solutions from scratch.

Raspberry Pi is very convenient to use as a control device for robots — it already has a built-in Wi-Fi module, and all the hardware of the robot will communicate with it via USB. What are the strengths of the Raspberry Pi?

The main strength of the Pi is its ease of use compared to many rivals.

Poor software and driver compatibility is also a common complaint about Pi competitors, although some are much better than others in this regard.

What is the cheapest Pi alternative?

Unfortunately, if you want a cheaper board than the Pi, you have to compromise.

If you don’t mind software and driver issues, then you can try using the ones with the best hardware. $29Pin A64. At first glance, the board has a lot of advantages over the Pi — the combination of Gigabit Ethernet and 2GB DDR3 RAM with 802.11n Wi-Fi support, a quad-core Arm Cortex A53 processor, and a pin header that is compatible with Pi board hardware add-ons.

There’s a big one, but however the Pine64 release was heavily criticized in several reviews for having such poor software support that some reviewers weren’t even able to get a working Linux

Two years ago and seems to have improved, however, in a wiki listing working versions of Android 7.1 and Ubuntu Xenial with a Mate desktop, complete with an office suite and a browser available for whiteboard. However, there are still issues such as Xenial’s lack of support for video hardware acceleration.

What is a good Raspberry Pi alternative for the same price?

At the same price as the Pi 3, $35, the Odroid-C1+ offers broadly the same specs but adds Gigabit Ethernet. 9The 0003

C1+ packs a 1.5GHz quad-core processor — faster than the Pi 3 but based on a slightly older architecture — 1GB DDR3 RAM and a reasonable price for a Mali-450 GPU.

However, Odroid does touch the Pi 3 in one notable way by not being able to connect to the board’s Wi-Fi.

. A big plus for the computer is that the Odode board set has a good reputation for the quality of their operating systems and driver support. While software support is good — including Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, LibreElec Media Center, and Android — some of the operating systems are older versions, like Android 5.1.

Other good cheap Pi alternatives?

If you’re only after similar specs for a lower price, then the Orange Pi range offers a lot, at least on paper.

$25 The Orange Pi Lite2 has similar specs to the more expensive Raspberry Pi 3 B model, with the same memory, 64-bit quad-core CPU, reasonable GPU, 1GB RAM, and Bluetooth 4.1 support. It even has a few advantages over the Pi 3, at least on paper, such as one USB 3.0 port, 802.11ac Wi-Fi support, and Android 7.0 support.

However it tracks the Pi paired with fewer USB ports and fewer pins for adding hardware to the board and no Ethernet.

. One downside is that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support isn’t built into the XU4 or C2, so you’ll need to use a USB dongle for wireless connectivity.

What is the best Raspberry Pi alternative for homemade IoT gadgets?

If you’re after a super simple machine, then the $10 Nano Pi Neo mentioned above is a smart choice if you’re more comfortable with wired than wireless. If you want Wi-Fi on the $8 Nano Pi Duo ($12 with 512MB memory) whose Allwinner h3+ processor runs at faster speeds than the Pi Zero W and has a newer CPU architecture and two preloaded pin header 32-pin connector for connecting to hardware. However, it lacks the Pi’s mini-HDMI port and Bluetooth support.

If you don’t mind spending a little more, there’s the $35 NanoPi Neo Plus2, which also offers 32 pins across two titles.

If you want something with a little more power and are willing to spend more than twice the price of a Pi 3, there’s a $99 Up Core.

The computer has a 1.8 GHz Intel Atom x5-Z8350 quad-core processor, 1 GB memory, one USB 3.0 port, and 16 GB eMMC storage. However, the ace to the board sleeve is 100 pins available for connecting add-on boards and other specialty hardware compared to the 40-pin header available on the Pi. The UP Core high speed expansion header includes pins for UART, SPI, 2 x USB HSIC, PCI-Express, GPIO, Intel Sensor Hub, SDIO and 5V Power.
