Hi,
I want to give my iMac i3 an upgrade to i5 or i7 processor.
I’ve red some posts of some people who tried several combinations.
Some combinations worked, some didn’t.
The CPU’s that didn’t work were the CPU’s with a TDP of 95W.
The i5 CPU’s that have been tried out and worked were the CPU’s with a TDP of 73W. My big question is; There are several CPU’s with a TDP of 82W like the i5 750S/i7 860S/i7 870S.
Will those CPU’s work? I can’t find any information on the web with these specific CPU’s….
The TDP is ±9W higher then the standard i3..

Apple has used so many different CPU’s in their systems I doubt anyone has a listing what works in which logic board. A better way to do this is to get down to your CPU in your system and make note of the part numbers, then go to Intel’s web site and look it up. Once you know the CPU series you can select a different chip within it.

The i7 870 has TDP of 95W but thats irrelevant the power consumption is of 121W and the 21. 5 imac doesn’t have the juice for that.
But ! the i7 870S (wich is the low-power variant) has the TDP of 82W and squeezes 66.63W from the power source. Bingo ! We have a winner.
I can confirm it works, i have the 21.5 mid-2010 imac with the i3 550 (dual core) now housing the quad i7 870S (2.66GHz turbo boost up to 3.6GHz, 8MB L3 cache). 4K video was a no go with i3 now plays smooth on i7, everything is blazing fast and I haven’t even upgraded to SSD yet. the only thing I did notice is that in System Report I had 5.86GT/s Processor Interconnect Speed now its 4.8GT/s.
Did a lap on cpu before mounting in socket, reports 41 degrees Celsius on all cores never went past 60 in full load. The i3 had 44-46 on average use and difference of 1-1.5 degrees between cores.

You can use the L3426 Xeon in the 2010 iMac !It has a lower power consumption 45w and gives 50% increase in multi core performance.
Shows as i3 1.86ghz in system profiler but can boost 1 core to 3.2ghz or 2 cores to 3.06ghz when needed.

I have a mid 2010 iMac with a core i3 3. 06 GHz CPU, and ATI Radion HD card with 256 MB a video room, and the 500 GB 7200 RPM HD. I am about to do an upgrade of the CPU, the GPU, and the Hd to SSD. It’s going to be a long tedious job, but doable. They are basically only two processor upgrade options that I am aware of and I chose to go with the Intel quad core i7 2.93 GHz That has the same socket type as the stock CPU. There is another core I five option, but I am upgrading this to the max. If you upgrade to the iOS 7, then you can use 32 GB of RAM instead of the 16 GB limit. Also, there are other graphics card options pulled from other imacs purchasable and eBay that you can swap for the stock built-in one. Changing from an HDD to an SSD is an enormous improvement in performance. And I’m not just talking about disc performance. But the entire system. I didn’t believe it until I tried it. As far as I know from everything I have read, there is no need to change the power supply when going with the CPU that I have bought. I’m actually about to commence the upgrade right now and really not looking forward to it. There are a ton of screws to remove in a lot of parts to take out. You literally have to disassemble the entire thing. As long as you follow the instructions and are very careful, it will be well worth it. You can take an 11 year old iMac and for $200, turn it into practically a brand new one as far as performance goes. The benefit is, you have peripheral ports that no longer exist so that hardware you might have that is fully functional you can still use, and you will not be forced to upgrade software because you can also run older versions of Mac OS X on other partitions. It’s also possible to remove the internal SuperDrive and replace it with another SATA SSD if you so choose. If you have the time, the patience, and the confidence, I say go for it

A mid-range processor product with good technical specifications and acceptable performance is the Core i3-540. Although this chip was released a long time ago, it still continues to be relevant and allows you to run most of the existing software. It is he who will be considered in this material.
What PC system blocks is this chip intended to assemble?
The Core i3-540 belongs to mid-level solutions. Its characteristics indicate its similar positioning by the manufacturer. On the one hand, it has two physical cores implemented at the hardware level, and this feature essentially makes it similar to the junior processors of the Celeron and, of course, Pentium families. On the other hand, at the software level, this chip looks like a full-fledged quad-core processor, and in terms of speed it is almost comparable to the older, more expensive i5 series CPUs. As a result, the chip in question will look decent at the heart of the following computers:
- Mid-range gaming system (in this case, a powerful gaming graphics card is required).
- Graphic station (there should also be a discrete accelerator as part of such a PC).
- High performance office computer.
- Print server.
- Workstation.
- Multimedia PC.
Types of bundles and their features
Most often, the Core i3-540 can be found in a bundle called BOX. In this case, the delivery list included the following:
- Processing device.
- Protective plastic case for CPU.
- Stock cooling system, which included improved thermal paste and proprietary cooler.
- PC front panel sticker with processor model logo.
- Warranty card.
- Installation and use manual.
The second delivery option was called TRAIL. In this case, the cooling system was excluded from the delivery list, and due to this, the cost of the product was reduced. Socket and system logic sets
The processor socket in which the chip in question must be installed is LGA1156. Its second name, according to the manufacturer’s nomenclature, is Soket H. It debuted in 2009 and replaced the outdated LGA775 processor socket at that time. In 2011, it was replaced by a more advanced LGA1155 socket, which was intended for installing chips based on the second generation Core architecture. Semiconductor chip architecture
In reality, the i3-540 was a full-fledged processor with 2 computing cores. But the implementation of NT technology and an increase in the number of transistors by 15% made it possible to obtain from it a full-fledged 4-block logical processor. This, in turn, made it possible to obtain an increase in performance, which in percentage terms was equal to the same 15%. The code name according to the nomenclature of the manufacturer of the architecture of this semiconductor crystal is Clarkdale.
Cache organization. Levels and volume
The cache memory in the Intel i3-540 consisted of 3 levels. The characteristics of the lower level indicated its total volume of 128 Kb. These 128 KB were divided into 2 modules of 64 KB each, which were strictly «fixed» to a specific core. Also, these 64 KB, in turn, were divided into 2 more equal parts of 32 KB each. One 32 KB held CPU instructions, while the other 32 KB held data. The total volume of the 2nd level cache was 512 KB, which were similarly divided into 2 parts of 256 KB. The third level of cache memory was 4 MB. In the latter case, volatile memory was common to all resources of the processor unit.
RAM. Specifications of modules and controller
Only the Intel Core i3-540 is aimed at working with DDR3 RAM. CPU specifications indicate that 1066 MHz and 1333 MHz modules are officially supported. But in practice, faster modules could also work successfully with such a processor solution, the frequencies of which could reach 1866 MHz or even 2100 MHz. The RAM controller, as noted earlier, is integrated into the chip package, and it is a two-channel one. That is, installing two 2 GB sticks instead of one 4 GB stick with a similar frequency allows you to get a speed increase of about 10-15 percent due to an increase in the performance of the RAM subsystem.
Frequency
The Intel i3-540 cannot dynamically adjust its frequency because it does not support Intel’s proprietary TurboBust technology. It is found only in more expensive chips of the i5 and, of course, i7 lines. The multiplier in this case is fixed at 23, and somehow it is not possible to change the frequency of the chip with its help. As a result, this product’s only nominal clock speed is 3.06 GHz.
Power consumption. Temperature range and technological process remember that the chip went on sale 5 years ago, in 2011, and at that time it really could boast of phenomenal performance. The highest temperature allowed for this processor is 72.6
0 C. When operating in nominal mode and in combination with a standard cooler, this value does not exceed 65 0 C. That is, this processor device has a solid margin of safety in terms of thermal load. In the case of this chip, there are 2 silicon crystals at once. One of them houses the computing part, manufactured according to the standards of a 32 nm technological processor. The second crystal includes a graphics adapter, a RAM controller and a north bridge of a set of system logic. It has already been manufactured according to the 45 nm process technology.
Increasing performance by overclocking
The i3-540 can overclock quite well, as for a mid-range processor device. The specifications of this solid-state solution indicate that it has a fixed CPU frequency multiplier of 23. The system board bus frequency is 133 MHz. Multiplying the first number by the second, we get 3.0 GHz. You can increase the performance of this processor solution only by increasing the clock frequency. As a rule, its value can be increased to a maximum of 195 MHz. This increases the CPU frequency to 4.5 GHz. This, in turn, allows you to achieve a 30% increase in productivity.
Integrated graphics
Like any modern similar processor, the i3-540 is equipped with an integrated graphics accelerator. Its technical specifications are not impressive, and the level of performance is minimal. Its performance is only enough to implement the most simple tasks, and for something more, a discrete graphics subsystem must be installed in the PC. The clock frequency of HD Graphics (this is the video card the solution in question is equipped with) is fixed at 733 MHz, and the number of displays simultaneously in operation is limited to only 2.
Synthetic tests of the CPU
It is not entirely correct to compare this processor with similar modern solutions, because the performance level has grown over the past 6 years since its release. Moreover, it has increased not only due to architectural changes, but also by adjusting the cache structure and increasing the clock frequency. Therefore, it is most correct to compare this CPU with the i5-2500, i3-2100 and Phenom II X4 955BE. These are more recent processor solutions, a comparison with which will allow us to evaluate the real level of performance of the hero of this article. In the SuperPi 1.5XS synthetic test for calculating the 1st million numbers after the decimal point in the number π, the processors showed the following results:
- i5-2500 — 11.09 seconds.
- i3-2100 — 12.75 seconds.
- i3-540 — 13.88 seconds.
- Phenom II X4 955BE — 21.66 seconds.
The situation in the PCMark 07 test changes dramatically. In this case, the CPU data received the following scores:
- i5-2500 — 3184. 540 — 2503.
The previous results indicate that in software that is optimized for 1 or 2 logical threads, the advantage will be on the side of Intel processors. The failure of the AMD representative in the first test is another confirmation of this. But software optimized for more cores shows completely different results. In this case, the advantage is already on the side of the CPU with a large number of computing modules.
Gaming performance
The i3-540 processor is able to show quite good results in gaming applications. As a rule, such software is well optimized for one, maximum for 2 cores, and this allows the hero of this review to show very, very good results. In the BattleForge game at 1680×1050 resolution and in conjunction with a Radeon HD 6970 video card with 1 GB of RAM, the following results are obtained with the list of processors in FPS given earlier:
- i5-2500 — 115.
- i3-2100 — 109.
- Phenom II X4 955BE — 93.
- i3-540 — 88.
Completely different situation in Lost Planet 2 in the same mode. In this case, the number of FPS is identical and equals 64 for all these processors. The first game is optimized for 4 threads, and due to this, such a distribution of results arises. In the latter case, the game is «sharpened» for one thread and the results are the same.
Results and reviews
The i3-540 continues to be an actual processor solution today. Its performance level is sufficient, and energy efficiency is acceptable. But still, it is more correct for the owners of such PCs to think about updating the computing system. The new processors will have much better performance and power efficiency.
