Intel Core i7-8700K vs Intel Core i7-7700K 2018 gaming comparison

Introduction

The last two years cpu speeds have not increased as rapidly as the number of physical cpu cores we see today in the latest AMD and Intel offerings. Two years ago 8 core (Octa-core) cpu’s were valued as highly exotic, but today in 2018, core count ends at an astonishing 18 cores and 36 threads in Intel’s most expensive Intel Core i9-7980XE, followed by the relatively cheaper AMD Threadripper 1950X with 16 cores and 32 threads. That is in consumer cpu’s not enterprise level. Nonetheless, more cores are only beneficial if the users favorite programs, or games, are designed to use these resources in the first place.

For gamers though, IPC, or instructions per clock are still the most important factor when deciding on a cpu. After all, a higher IPC means the cpu is able to process images faster delivered to and from the GPU. The last Intel generation, more specifically the i5 and i7 Coffee Lake cpu’s 8×00 series are considered the best gaming cpu’s, delivering the highest IPC to date when compared to the direct competition. Does this mean you have to upgrade your previous Intel Kaby Lake Core i7-7700K to the new Coffee Lake platform, or is it all marketing talk? In this blog we will take a look at a few scenario’s which are based on a straightforward set of benchmarks.

Testing Methodology

We prepared two test systems which consist of a quad core Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake and 6-core Intel Core i7-8700K Coffee Lake with identical Nvidia GTX 1060 6G GPU’s. The games of our choice are The Rise of the Tombraider (DX12), Battlefield 1 (DX12) and GTA 5 (DX11). We also run 3D Mark Firestrike, Timespy and Cinebench R15 (single and multi-core) being the static benchmarks of our choice. We could opt for a GTX 1080 Ti, but to make things interesting, and in line with the average users videocard budget, we opted for the GTX 1060 6G from Asus and Zotac.

Both systems have their cpu clocked at stock speeds and their GPU’s at identical frequencies (2025/9000 mhz). Both systems have their XMP DDR4 (3200mhz) memory profile activated. We leave all bios power saving options at their default values. All benchmarks are performed at 1080P resolution resulting in the highest cpu load, and represents the favorite gaming resolution for 76,47% of all STEAM gamers in the period of 2016-2018. Within this period the GTX 1060 6G took the highest market share with 14,27% ( at 29th march 2018) of all STEAM gamers running this GPU chip in their systems.

Finally, once we have run all benchmarks we can draw a conclusion based on these findings comparing the out of the box performance differences of both cpu’s.

Benchmarks conclusions

During the benchmarks, the Intel Core i7-8700K ran at a boost speed of 4. 395 Mhz compared to the Intel Core i7-7700K maxing out boost clock at a higher 4.500 Mhz. Despite a 105 Mhz difference we found the 8700K performing on par with the 7700K except for the Battlefield 1 benchmark. In Cinebench R15 the Intel Core i7-8700K is a few points faster than the Core i7-7700K. The multithreaded Cinebench score increased by a massive 35% compared to the Intel Core i7-7700K. Obviously, having two cores and four threads more the Core i7-8700K has a clear advantage.

What can we conclude from all this? Well, first the Intel Core i7-7700K is still a beast of a cpu in 2018, giving no reason to switch to a 8700K if gaming performance is your only criteria. Having said that, the Intel Core i7-8700K gives you best of both worlds, being faster clock for clock compared to the Intel Core i7-7700K meanwhile delivering performance across the board, regardless if you are a gamer or content creator. Once overclocked to 4.9-5.0 GHZ the multi threaded cinebench score of the Intel Core i7-8700K reaches Ryzen 7 1800X (8 core) performance levels. Again, that is impressive, knowing you would have paid triple the price for this performance less than three years ago.

Two cores might not seem much if you think about it but it concludes a 50% improvement over the Core i7-7700K.

Apparently, the core clocks of Core i7-7700K may seem better to you as the i7-8700K has a 3.7-GHz frequency base clock but the turbo core clock of the 8700K is, in fact, a bit better than 7700K at 4.7-GHz, i.e. 0.2-GHz more than the turbo frequency of 7700K.

We are pleased to return to testing processors and have prepared for you an interesting comparison of this novelty with direct and not so competitors. First, a few words about the processor. In 2017, Intel was very generous with gifts: in the first quarter, it introduced the Kaby Lake line to the market with the Intel Core i7-7700K model at the head, and in the fourth — Coffee Lake with the flagship Intel Core i7-8700K.

There are no fundamental changes in the process technology or microarchitecture, but there are still minor improvements. Also, the novelty stands out with the support of 6 cores and 12 threads with a proportional increase in the cache memory of all levels. And in order to keep the thermal package at around 95 W, I had to reduce the base frequency to 3.7 GHz.

Additionally, it boasts a 2-channel RAM controller with guaranteed support for DDR4-2666 modules. At the same time, the recommended price tag rose from 350 to $359.. And from the unpleasant moments, we note the need to purchase a new motherboard based on Intel 300 series chipsets, although the same Socket LGA1151 connector is used.

The main internal competitor is the aforementioned predecessor of the Kaby Lake line — the Intel Core i7-7700K. It offers only 4 cores and 8 threads, but a higher base frequency of 4.2 GHz. However, its main advantage at the time of preparation of the material was the real price tag, which is $90 below: $370 vs $460.

The second internal competitor is the 6-core Intel Core i7-7800X for the Socket LGA2066 platform. This is the most affordable representative of the Intel Skylake-X series, and in the future it can be replaced even with 10-18-core models of the Intel Core i9 line. The recommended price tag of the Intel Core i7-7800X is $30 higher, and the real one is $20 lower due to the small supply and high demand for the Intel Coffee Lake line.

But we didn’t have it, so this platform will be represented by the 8-core Intel Core i7-7820X. Let’s clarify that its real cost at the moment is $650, that is, it is almost $200 more expensive than the Intel Core i7-8700K.

And the 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 1700 acts as a nominal external competitor, but we didn’t have it either, so we took a slightly more expensive AMD Ryzen 7 1700X. It is characterized by lower clock speeds and a similar TDP. Its average sale price is $390, and the saved $70 can be invested in other components, if, of course, it makes sense to save.

The Intel Core i7-8700K was tested using a GIGABYTE Z370 Ultra Gaming motherboard and was cooled by a Thermalright Archon SB-E X2 cooler. Thanks to the modified BIOS version and the Enhanced Performance option disabled by default, the processor did not boil during nominal operation.

Other systems used ASUS ROG Strix X299-E Gaming and ASUS PRIME Z270-A motherboards, as well as MSI X370 SLI Plus. The RAM modules of the Patriot Viper 4 set in all cases worked at a frequency of 3200 MHz with approximately the same timings, and an Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 X3 was used as a video card. Systems and most games were installed on GOODRAM Iridium Pro series SSDs. More details about test configurations are in the description.

We will compare processors in two stages. First, we compare their results in the nominal mode when running synthetic and gaming tests, and then in overclocking.

By tradition, let’s start with AIDA64 , which immediately presents very interesting results. For example, the Intel Core i7-7700K is slightly ahead of the new flagship by 1-3% when working with RAM, but the cache memory of all levels of the new product is faster. The advantage of the representative of the Core X series reaches 91% when working with RAM, and the L1 and L2 cache memory is faster, but L3 is much slower, so it must be accelerated when overclocking. But Ryzen 7 boasts an 8% advantage only in the speed of reading from RAM.

On the other hand, the data access latency in AIDA64 is the lowest for the 4-core Intel Core i7, and the highest for AMD Ryzen 7. , and the advantage of the 8-core from Intel is 23%. The AMD Ryzen 7 outperformed in unboxing speed and overall rankings, but lost out in packing speed. On average, its advantage is 4%.

WinRAR also leads the Intel Core i7-7820X, which is 10% ahead of the novelty. In turn, the top Coffee Lake bypasses the representatives of Kaby Lake and Ryzen by 45 and 51%, respectively.

When rendering a scene in Corona , the test model showed the third result, losing 20% ​​to the 8-core Intel Core i7 and 4% to the AMD Ryzen 7. But the 4-core predecessor took 43% more time.

In the V-Ray benchmark, we see a very similar situation: the Intel Core i7-8700K lagged behind the 8-core models by 19 and 3%, and the top Kaby Lake coped with the task 42% slower.

Shortest scene encoding time in benchmark x265 was predicted for the Intel Core i7-7820X. It is followed by the novelty under consideration, which took almost 4 s more time, which is equivalent to 10%. Its gap from AMD Ryzen 7 is just over a second, and it is separated from the 4-core by more than 12 seconds.

A very interesting situation happened in CineBench R15 : in the CPU test, the processors are located depending on the number of cores and clock frequency, and in OpenGL only the frequency played a key role, so the Intel Core i7-7700K is in the first place here.

We complete the review of synthetics in the complex test RealBench . The novelty has a strong position in the image editing tests and in multitasking mode, which brings it to second place in the overall standings, although the gap from the 8-core Intel Core i7 in this case does not exceed 0.5%. In third place was AMD Ryzen 7, followed by 4-core Kaby Lake.

Now let’s move on to the games, the choice of which was carried out not by the «poke» method, but quite consciously. It’s no secret that there are games with good optimization for multithreading, but there are bad ones. There are exciting projects on new engines, and there are on old ones.

For example, Far Cry Primal is highly dependent on CPU performance in single-threaded mode, and in order not to run into the capabilities of the video card, we switched to HD resolution. GTA V nominally supports multithreading, but its engine is not very fresh, and the optimization is lame. In The Third Witcher, code parallelization is already better, but still, the optimization is far from ideal.

But WATCH_DOGS 2 is good at using additional cores and threads. The test includes popular representatives of heavy online shooters, which are not very clear in terms of the repeatability of the results, but without them there is no way, since I immediately “dislike, unsubscribe and take my friends away”. And, for example, in Ghost Recon Wildlands, we deliberately decided to rest against the video card and see if there would be any difference between the systems.

In a word, games and settings were chosen in such a way as to explore different classes of projects and different scenarios for their work, making the test more objective and complex.

Let’s start with online mode Battlefield 1 in Full HD resolution with ultra graphics settings. The Intel Core i7-8700K showed the highest minimum frame rate at 103 fps. But the average rate turned out to be 5-8 FPS lower than that of internal competitors. The backlog of AMD Ryzen 7 was up to 13%.

In Assassin’s Creed Origins we left the settings at maximum, but reduced the resolution to HD so as not to be limited by the video card. According to online reviews, 30% of the processor’s performance is spent on online protection decoding, so it is not surprising that a system with an 8-core Intel Core i7 on board took the lead. And the top-end Coffee Lake lost even to its predecessor, perhaps due to lower frequencies.

Ultra preset in HD test Far Cry Primal clearly demonstrates the importance for older engines of single-threaded performance. The Intel Core i7-7700K became the undisputed leader, and its 6-core replacement lagged behind by 13-16%. Both 8-core processors were far behind.

Similar graphics and resolution settings were used in the benchmark Rainbow Six Siege . It does better with multi-threading optimization, but single-threaded performance is also very important. Therefore, we have dual power: the Intel Core i7-8700K is 4% ahead of its 4-core predecessor in terms of the minimum indicator, and the latter, in turn, minimally bypasses the new product in terms of average frame rate. Among the 8-core processors, the representative of Intel looks better.

In WATCH_DOGS 2 at ultra settings and HD resolution, we again fix a couple of winners, only now the leadership cannot be shared between 6- and 8-core representatives of the Intel Core i7 line. The test model by 3 FPS or 4% bypasses its counterpart in the minimum frequency, and he breaks ahead by 2% in the average. By the way, Intel Core i7-7700K and AMD Ryzen 7 also failed to determine a clear leader among themselves.

It would seem that a new game set in the world of Middle-earth should be well optimized for multithreading. And to test it, we ran its benchmark at HD resolution and ultra graphics settings. But the best result was shown by the 4-core Intel Core i7, and the system with the 8-core Intel Core i7 on board did the worst. The Intel Core i7-8700K outperforms the AMD Ryzen 7 in terms of the average frame rate, but slightly loses to it in the minimum frame rate.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is very demanding on the processor, video card, and disk subsystem, so we decided to run it at Full HD and a very high preset in order to load all the nodes to the maximum. If you think that the results were within the margin of error, then we hasten to surprise you. In terms of the average frequency, the Intel Core i7-7700K takes the clear lead, and in terms of the minimum frequency, the Intel Core i7-8700K. The lag of 8-cores becomes especially obvious precisely in terms of the minimum speed.

Let’s check if this applies to the 6-core Intel Core i5-8600K.

The Intel Core i5-8600K runs at a base frequency of 3.6 GHz and can dynamically boost up to 4.3 GHz. But since its multiplier is unlocked, it becomes possible to overclock. It also has in its structure a 2-channel RAM controller with guaranteed support for DDR4-2666 modules and an Intel UHD Graphics 630 video core with 24 execution units. Thermal package is 95 W, and the critical temperature is at 100°.

We will compare this novelty with three competitors. The first is the flagship of the Kaby Lake series — the Intel Core i7-7700K. It has only 4 full cores, but can handle up to 8 threads. Let’s see if 6 cores can compete with 8 threads. And the price tags at the time of preparation of the material are quite close: $330 for the Intel Core i5-8600K and $370 for the Intel Core i7-7700K.

Perhaps it would be more appropriate to take the Intel Core i5-7600K for comparison, but we simply do not have it in stock, like some other close competitors.

Moving on. The second opponent will be the recently reviewed 6-core flagship Intel Core i7-8700K. Of course, their price ranges are quite different, because the top model is $130 more expensive. But still we want to check whether the additional 6 threads solve a lot and whether it is worth overpaying for them.

There are two competitors in the AMD Ryzen series: the $290 6-core AMD Ryzen 5 1600X and the $350 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 1700. But, since we do not have them in stock, we will limit ourselves to the more affordable AMD Ryzen 5 1600, which can be found on average for $230. It features support for 12 threads, but runs at lower clock speeds: from 3.2 to 3.6 GHz. Although its multiplier is also unlocked, so it is overclockable.

We got to know the test participants. They will be assisted by GIGABYTE Z370 Ultra Gaming, ASUS PRIME Z270-A and MSI X370 SLI Plus motherboards. The Thermalright Archon SB-E X2 cooler is responsible for cooling. The RAM is provided by a dual-channel Patriot Viper 4 kit, while the operating systems themselves and most games were installed on GOODRAM Iridium Pro series SSDs.

Opens an AIDA64 test session. In terms of reading, writing and copying data, the novelty loses to all competitors, but the gap is small, in the region of 1-7%.

But the data access latency is lower than that of Ryzen 5, although both representatives of the Core i7 series have even lower rates.

In the 7-ZIP archiver, the presence of additional threads plays a more important role than the frequency of the cores, so again the Intel Core i5-8600K is in last place. But if the advantage of 8700K is more than 40%, then for Ryzen 5 it does not exceed 26%, and for 7700K it reaches a maximum of 3%.

WinRAR is not yet very good friends with the Ryzen series, so the new product bypasses its external counterpart by 7%, but lags behind the 7700K and 8700K by 20 and 45%, respectively.

Scene rendering in Corona was the fastest done by the flagship of the Coffee Lake series. The Intel Core i5-8600K was also first, only from the end, trailing the leader by 78 seconds or 36%.

Now let’s move on to games. We have chosen those projects that are typical representatives of their classes.

In a word, games and settings were chosen in such a way as to explore different classes of projects and different scenarios for their work, making the test more objective and complex.

In Assassin’s Creed Origins, we lowered the resolution to HD, but left the graphics settings at maximum to reduce the impact of the video card. The best results were shown by representatives of the Intel Core i7 series. Intel Core i5-8600K lagged behind the leader by 8-10%.

The Far Cry Primal ultra preset in HD resolution showed quite unexpected results: despite the lower number of threads and lower clock speed, the Intel Core i5-8600K outperforms the Core i7-8700K by 13-16%. The Core i7-7700K became the leader: it beat the novelty by 2-3 FPS.

Conclusion

Thus, for a gaming system, the 6-core Intel Core i5-8600K is currently a very interesting purchase. It is not much inferior to the flagship of the previous series or the new 12-thread Intel Core i7. Yes, the nominal value of the Intel Core i7-7700K looks a few percent better, but it also costs a little more and is harder to overclock. Moreover, over time, the price tag on the Core i5 should fall, and then it will be even more attractive. But the Intel Core i7-8700K is more suitable for streamers or those who want a productive universal system for work and play right away.

As for AMD Ryzen 5, despite the noticeable lag in games, in most cases it gave a comfortable FPS level. In synthetic benchmarks, the advantage of the Intel Core i5 is noticeably reduced. And since AMD’s Ryzen 5 1600 is $100 less, budget-conscious buyers should look into it.

To cool the Core i7-8700K, we used Cooler Master MasterAir MA610P (the maximum TDP of this cooler is 180 W). At the standard frequency (3700 MHz, voltage — 1.136 V), both fans operated at 1000 rpm (virtually silent version), the maximum temperature of the processor in this format is 57 degrees.

Performance and test results

Obviously, the Intel Core i7-8700K is an extremely powerful processor; it’s hard to find a task that this CPU can’t handle (we mean operations that a home user or gamer faces). Do not forget that we have stone oriented to the mainstream segment.

For gaming, we recommend choosing something simpler.

The competitive alignment is as follows: the direct rival of the Intel Core i7-8700K is the AMD Ryzen 7 1700. In professional computing (for example, rendering), where it is possible to use the maximum number of threads, both CPUs show approximately equal performance (plus / minus).

The power of one core is expectedly higher for the Intel Core i7-8700K, and therefore in single-threaded operations and tasks (users have to deal with them quite often), this processor is more powerful than the AMD Ryzen 7 1700. In games, both solutions are equally good.

Intel Core i7-8700K and Core i7-8700 (locked multiplier variant) are roughly equal in nominal value, which is generally obvious. The technical arsenal of two stones is identical, the clock frequency differs insignificantly. Therefore, if a CPU without the “K” index is enough for your tasks, it’s better not to overpay for the top option (which is at least an additional $50).

Intel Core i7-8700K looks worthy against the background of processors based on Socket LGA 2066. In our opinion, the leader of the Coffee Lake family is a more interesting product compared to, for example, the Intel Core i7-7800X with the same 6 physical cores.

Core i7-8700K is another grow-out from Intel. For the current tasks of the mainstream segment, it is too good.

In the Corona 1.3 benchmark, which gives a clear indication of CPU speed (in minutes and seconds), the Intel Core i7-8700K draws the scene about half as fast as the 16-core Intel Core i9-7960X, but four times faster than the Pentium G4620.

The high performance of the Intel Core i7-8700K is useless for modern games. Absolutely equal results (in terms of frame / s) are demonstrated by much more affordable processors, for example, Core i3-7100 or the same Pentium G4620.

Any modern Intel CPU with two physical cores and 4 processing threads is enough to unlock the potential of a top-end graphics adapter (for example, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti) in high resolution (1440p and 2160p).

Optimization for 6 physical cores in toys is a matter of the future. Now in additional resources, if the PC is needed mainly for entertainment, there is no point.

Overclocking

Overclocking the Intel Core i7-8700K to 5GHz is very easy, especially if you have an ASUS motherboard based on the Intel Z370 chipset. AT BIOS ASUS TUF Z370-Pro Gaming has an OC Tuner option for this purpose. It is enough to press one button, and after rebooting the CPU will start at 5000 MHz, with all six cores absolutely stable.

After overclocking, the results in benchmarks have grown significantly, which means that this simple operation makes sense. But along with the increase in frequency (and voltage), TDP also jumped, and hence the temperature.

Intel Core i7-8700K at 5GHz consumes at least 156W (1.344V operating voltage). Cooler Master MasterAir MA610P during stress tests started to the maximum, both fans functioned at the limit of 1700 rpm. The final temperature of the CPU is 88 degrees.

The Intel Core i7-8700K started at 5200 MHz without problems (it would start at 5500 MHz as well), but overheating caused any test to crash. Conclusion: for values ​​above 5 GHz, an appropriate cooling system is required, preferably water, the TDP of which is above 200-250 W.

Conclusion

Intel Core i7-8700K enthusiast processor; the first thing to do with it immediately after installing it in Socket LGA 1151 is to overclock it well, the main thing is to take care of serious cooling.

Before the release of the Coffee Lake family, the computer community had some concerns about the overclocking potential of 14 nm products, but they were not confirmed. New items of the eighth generation conquer high clock speeds almost better than the variants from the Kaby Lake and Skylake lines.

The cost of the Intel Core i7-8700K in domestic retail has fallen to an acceptable (and actually recommended) mark.
