AMD 16 Core Ryzen 9 3950X Faster Than Intel 18 Core i9-10980XE

Once again, AMD’s Ryzen 9 3950X 16 core mainstream and Intel’s Core i9-10980XE 18 core high-end desktop CPUs have been benchmarked against each other in Geekbench. Both CPUs, aimed at the enthusiasts and gamers alike, feature massive core count under $1000 US and are scheduled for launch later this month.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16 Core vs Intel Core i9-10980XE 18 Core Processor Benchmarks Leak Out — AMD’s Mainstream Enough To Tackle Intel’s HEDT

AMD officially introduced the Ryzen 9 3950X 16 core mainstream flagship processor yesterday. The processor was launched alongside the 3rd Generation Ryzen Threadripper lineup which will aim at the HEDT market. The 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper lineup initially features 24 core & 32 core CPUs but is expected to go up to 64 cores in January 2020 with the release of the flagship Threadripper 3990X.

In the meanwhile, AMD has well-positioned their flagship mainstream, the Ryzen 9 3950X to take on Intel’s flagship X299 HEDT CPU, the Core i9-10980XE. In fact, AMD’s mainstream lineup such as the Ryzen 9 3900X 12 core and Ryzen 9 3950X 16 core offer absolutely amazing value compared to Intel’s 10th Gen X-series parts. Not only do the X-series parts come in at a higher price point but the cost of the X299 platform alone is a huge factor. AMD’s mainstream platform features dual-channel memory support and you can find various X570 motherboards around $150 US.

The same can not be said for the X299 platform which features Quad-channel memory support and the boards designed to support the new 10th Generation chips cost north of $250 US. The cooling requirement for both the Ryzen 9 3950X and Intel Core i9-10980XE is similar since AMD recommends using a top-end liquid cooler with their chip. The HEDT Intel chips also require very high-end liquid cooling to run at optimal boost clocks. With that said, let’s take a quick look at the specifications of both chips before moving on to the benchmarks.

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X 16 Core CPU Specifications

In terms of specifications, the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X will feature the 7nm Zen 2 core architecture. There will be three chiplets on the Ryzen 9 interposer which include two Zen 2 dies and a single I/O die which is based on a 14nm process node. The AMD Ryzen 9 3950X will be fully enabled, offering 16 cores and 32 threads. This core configuration has never been available on mainstream platforms such as AM4. Even the 12 core, 24 thread Ryzen 9 3900X configuration wasn’t seen on mainstream platforms until AMD launched it, bringing high core counts, that used to be HEDT exclusive, down to mainstream users.

In terms of clock speeds, the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X runs at a base frequency of 3.5 GHz and boosts to a blisteringly fast 4.7 GHz which is the highest for AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series processor. The chip will feature 72 MB of total cache and just like the other Ryzen 9 parts, feature a TDP of 105W. The TDP is based on the base frequency numbers so it will actually be higher when the chip boosts or is manually overclocked by users. When it comes to overclocking, we also know that like all other Ryzen CPUs, the Ryzen 9 3950X will feature a soldered design that should help deliver better thermals than TIM. The processor is scheduled for launch on the 25th of November for a price of $749 US.

Alright so let’s talk about the benchmarks of both processors. I will start with the Geekbench 4 benchmark where both processors are compared against one another in single-core and multi-core optimized workloads. In single-core performance, the Ryzen 9 3950X scores 5570 points versus 5453 points of the Intel Core i9-10980XE. In multi-core performance, despite having more cores and threads, the Intel Core i9-10980XE still looses with a score of 51180 points versus AMD’s 52098 points from the Ryzen 9 3950X. In the single-core and multi-core workload performance breakdown, you can clearly see that AMD is crushing Intel across the board which is impressive for a chip that has fewer cores/threads, a lower boost clock speed, a lower TDP and also comes in at around $250 US less.

AMD introduced Threadripper processors — the fastest desktop CPUs / Habr

This autumn promises to be hot. AMD just hit a quarterly revenue record since 2005 and it’s not going to stop there. The company announced three new desktop CPUs last week with shipping in two weeks from . According to 3DMark preliminary tests, these are the fastest desktop processors on the market. For example, 24-core Threadripper 39The 60X leaves behind both the Core i9-9900KS and the Intel Core i9-9980XE.

AMD in Brief:

  • Ryzen 9 3950X Dual TSMC 7nm Chiplets: 16 Cores, 3. 5-4.7GHz, $749.
  • Ryzen Threadripper 3960X (24 cores, 3.8-4.5 GHz) and Ryzen Threadripper 3970X (32 cores, 3.7-4.5 GHz) of four chiplets each. These are the first 3rd generation Threadripper processors based on the 7nm Zen 2 architecture, $1399 and $1999.
  • TRX40 chipset for new Threadrippers. New socket and new motherboards.
  • Overclockable Athlon 3000G for $49.

The Ryzen 9 3950X is aimed at the more mainstream market, while the 3rd generation Threadripper is aimed at powerful gaming systems and high-end workstations (HEDT market, high-end desktop).

The presented processors will go on sale in two weeks, from November 25, 2019 (Athlon 3000G — from November 19).

The Ryzen 9 3950X is one of AMD’s most anticipated processors, and the company has mentioned it at almost every presentation this year. AMD’s new flagship for the mainstream desktop market is being manufactured by TSMC from two 8-core chiplets on a 7nm process.

The 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X is based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture. Compared to the previous flagship Ryzen 9 3900X (12 cores), the maximum clock speed has increased by 100 MHz (4.7 GHz vs. 4.6 GHz), and the L2 cache has been increased from 6 to 8 MB. Otherwise, the nominal characteristics have not changed, even the TDP remained at the same level of 105 watts.

The Ryzen 9 3950X is compatible with most AM4 motherboards, but to take advantage of the maximum lane of 24 PCIe 4.0 lanes, an X570 motherboard is recommended.

AMD claims Ryzen 9 3950X gaming performance at 1080p roughly matches Core i9-9900K and outperforms Core i9-9920X, and outperforms both Core i9-9900K and Core i9- 9920X by 18-79% «in selected tests».

AMD also points out that the 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X has lower power consumption than the 8-core Core i9-9900K.

In addition, all Ryzen 3000 processors support power and performance reduction through the Ryzen Master software. So, a processor with a TDP of 95/105W can be downgraded to 65W. Then the temperature of the Ryzen 9 3950X will drop from 54°C to 47°C, and performance will decrease by 23% (in Cinebench nT).

The Ryzen Threadripper 3960X and Ryzen Threadripper 3970X mark the start of the 3rd generation Ryzen Threadripper processor series.

32-core TR 3970X with 64 threads, 3.7GHz base, 4.5GHz turbo, 64 PCIe 4.0 lanes, 128MB L3 cache, 4-channel DDR4-3200 (1DPC), 280W TDP and suggested price $1999. For context, until recently, for less than $ 2000, you could buy a maximum of a 10-core processor, writes AnandTech .

The 24-core TR 3960X has a slightly higher base frequency of 3.8 GHz. Other characteristics are the same, and the recommended price is $1399.

Edition Tom’s Hardware published preliminary Threadripper 3960X benchmarks compared to previous generation Threadripper 2970WX processor, current AMD Ryzen 9 desktop flagship3900X, as well as the main competitors Intel Core i9-9900KS and Intel Core i9-9980XE.

Processor Fire Strike Time Spy Time Spy Extreme
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X 27 751 12604 12603 / 12677
AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX 21 567 7539 6556
Intel Core i9-9980XE 30 658 11492 10 222
AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 28 705 12 164 6696
Intel Core i9-9900KS 26 306 11 759 5385

As you can see, the Threadripper 3960X is seriously superior to its predecessor Threadripper 2970WX, which was to be expected. It falls short of the Ryzen 9 3900X and Core i9-9980XE chips in the Fire Strike test, but outperforms them all in Time Spy and Time Spy Extreme.

Test results for the Threadripper 3970X are not yet available. But it can be assumed that increasing the number of cores by 25% will clearly improve performance in some tasks that allow massive parallelism. AMD itself claims that the Threadripper 3970X «delivers up to 90% performance gains over the Core i9-9980XE, including:

  • Up to 90% in Cinebench R20 nT
  • Up to 47% in Adobe Premiere
  • Up to 49% in V-Ray
  • Up to 43% in Chromium Release 78 Compile
  • Up to 36% in Unreal Engine

Benchmark results Intel Core i9-9980XE 18C36T, AMD Threadripper 3960X 24C48T and AMD Threadripper 3970X 32C64T

But no independent test results yet.

For the TR 3960X and TR 3970X processors, a new sTRX4 socket and new TRX40 motherboards have been developed, although technically the socket is still 4094 pins, as in the previous one. AMD representatives at the presentation mentioned that they were pledged for the longevity of this platform. You can probably expect at least one more generation of Threadripper to be compatible with these motherboards. They stressed that the new socket had to be implemented due to the new PCIe 4.0 x8 requirement.

The TRX40 chipset is designed by AMD engineers and manufactured in 14nm by GlobalFoundries.

A large number of PCIe lanes (72, with 88 redundant) allows motherboard manufacturers to offer a variety of configurations, even crazy ones like 20 SATA ports, writes AnandTech . In a sense, it is this parameter (the number of lines), and not the number of cores, that becomes the main difference between Threadripper and the «mass» Ryzen 9.

Motherboard manufacturers are already publishing teasers of their new products, and most of them will be presented closer to 25 November 2019year, i.e. the date of the official start of sales of the Threadripper 3960X and Threadripper 3970X.

True, there are fears that new motherboards will be very expensive. So far, the cheapest I’ve found is the Gigabyte TRX40 Aorus Pro WiFi for $407.81. The rest are even more expensive.

The $49 Athlon 3000G is a pretty interesting processor, though it stands apart from the high-end offerings. This is a dual-core CPU based on the 12nm Zen+ Picasso microarchitecture, like the Athlon 3000G, Ryzen 3 3200G and Ryzen 5 3400G.

It runs at 3.5GHz non-turbo with Radeon Vega 3 (1.1GHz) graphics and a TDP of 35W. Supports up to 64GB of DDR4-2933 memory and comes with a 65W AMD quiet cooler. At this price, this is a pretty attractive offer.

An interesting detail: AMD is touting the Athlon 3000G as the first AM4 Athlon «totally open to overclocking». Buyers can increase the multiplier as much as the hardware can handle. AMD calls plus 400 MHz «typical overclocking» for the end user. This is why the bundled cooler is for a 65W heat sink, rather than the nominal maximum TDP of 35W for this processor.

The Athlon 3000G is likely to threaten the market positions of Intel Celeron and Pentium. AMD has stated that it is ready to produce Athlon chips in large quantities, so their shortage in the market is excluded.

How will Intel respond? In early October, the company introduced several processors of the new Xeon W-2200 line for workstations and servers, and in May announced the tenth generation of Ice Lake 10 nm processors. To keep up with the competition, Intel released Core i9 processors10th generation based on Cascade Lake-X architecture with higher clock speeds, support for Turbo Boost 3.0, more PCIe lanes and more system memory with higher frequencies, and in October drastically reduced the prices of both new and old generation processors. For example, the flagship 18-core Core i9-10908XE with a clock speed of 3 GHz and up to 4.8 GHz in turbo mode is priced at $979. For comparison, last year’s flagship 18-core Core i9-9980XE was offered at $19 at launch.90.

At the moment, the market for «mainstream» desktop processors is as follows (recommended retail prices for AMD, and OEM prices for Intel, which are usually $20-50 lower than retail prices):

AMD

Ryzen 5 3600 ($199) 6/12 Below $200 4/4 Core i3-9350K ($173)

In addition to lowering prices, Intel has taken another smart step by canceling the release of the 16-core Cascade Lake-X so that the situation does not look too obvious.

At the same time, AMD stated that the sharp price cuts from Intel and other maneuvers by Intel «will not affect the product release plan.»

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X review: 16 cores on 7nm process technology with PCIe 4.0

The choice between building a regular PC and an advanced office computer has always been very clear: if the problem is with the budget, and you are interested in games, the user, as a rule , travels around the house. However, if the user wishes to perform more professional work, he turns to the advanced office. Under the latest series of AMD-core Ryzen processors, the lineup has been sluggish. This year this line has disappeared. Even in 2016, typical processors were over four hours: today they are over six.

What do you need six times? Yes.

Need six courses? No.

For most PC builders, there are two main pilot projects: cost and performance. Users who want a car for themselves will invest their money in what the best gaming games offer. Users who want to edit videos will watch content-focused material. For those in business, an additional incentive for additional results is the ability to offset or amortize these costs by increasing the level of work. For a video editor who needs a video week, they can spend +40% on a decrease in profitability, this can be profitable in a short time.

As we progress in 2019, users will be more with their systems. Even range-based users can have two monitors where they can play and watch their favorite streamers at the same time. Advanced users can reserve multiple cores for different tasks, ensuring there is always enough power for high speed workloads or virtual machines. Well, processors need to be «multi-core» over ten years old, we as users just need to adjust our way of doing things so they are more parallel and the hardware meets our needs.

In fact, AMD Ryzen processors were put up for sale. The first generation of standard Ryzen hardware in 2017 was a freshly brewed air buffet in a market old enough to be addicted. With color video, AMD Ryzen was active until it had only one processor and is currently running Intel hardware in the lower class. The new architecture has not advanced today, but has allowed a different paradigm at an obscene and reasonable cost.

Between round 2 and Zen 2. Earlier this year, AMD advanced again, this time 12 times in the market at the same price as 8, or it was the price from 4 times in just three years. In three years we had three trials for the same price, and in these races there are even more brutal performances. The frequency was not even higher than the competition, but it was compensated by the frequency of brute-cycles, and finally, where the competitors offered dormant huit cœurs, AMD offered 12 with lower power consumption to run.

Tour 2 today is part 2: take the same processor to 12 hours and add another four hours (to increase the price by 50%), and choose not only the best public processor that Intel has to offer, but also the best high-performance processor. the game. office processor. It is AMD that is pushing the Intel product portfolio like never before. What is the dominant current, anyway?

AMD’s new Ryzen 9 3950X has a MSRP of $749. To that end, AMD has announced six of its latest Zen 2 cables based on TSMC’s 7nm process that run at a base frequency of 3.5GHz and a unique turbo frequency of 4.7GHz. The tablet has a TDP of 105W and has 24 PCIe 4.0 cables as well as two memory channels for charging up to 128GB DDR4-3200.

Not too long ago, this price range was rich for AMD’s cutting-edge Threadripper desktop processors, ranging from 8 hours to 32 hours. AMD is pushing that paradigm forward as well, with this 16-core block priced at $749, and the new generation of Threadripper 3000 processors starting at 24 blocks for $1,399. When AMD PDG, Dr. We asked Lisa Su earlier this year what happened is that more cows will be fed conventional processors, and he replied: «When Ryzen monte, Threadripper monte.» This is the implementation of those.

It should be noted that the price is allowed to be higher in retail at the start, since demand must be higher and stock levels are not determined — given the popularity of 12 times the popularity of pu shu, it seems that users as a public platform to always be the best.

Come on AM4: Battle with more cards

When the AM4 platform was first launched, technically with pre-Zen hardware, it took over the four cores. The same platform currently supports up to six drivers, which is not bad at all. The inconvenience of this lies in the motherboard fees: some AM4 motherboards were not loaded with processors up to six prices for high performance per spirit. A few more cards built on socket AM4 were intended for the budget market and will have problems with this part within 16 hours.

AMD has at least tried to segment its AM4 market a bit. Only the latest AM4 chipset, the X570 chipset, officially accepts Ryzen 3000 series PCIe 4.0 connections. In order to enable PCIe 4.0 files on the processor as qualified by AMD, users must purchase an X570 motherboard, otherwise these routes will run at high speed. speed (PCIe 3.0) on cards other than X570.

The quality of the motherboard probably also affects the turbo frequencies. AMD’s turbocharging algorithms depend in part on the power of the food that powers the power of the food. We see X570 motherboards cost between 170 and 999 dollars. This isn’t to say that doubling the cost of a motherboard doubles the power of the turbo, but as we’ve seen with previous Ryzen 3000-series washers, the choice of motherboard (as well as the cooling it uses) matters.

All X570 motherboards we’ve recently tested are capable of accessing the Ryzen 9 3950X. Here is a list of what we tested:

Users looking into motherboards should find a good combination of capacity, cost and features. We conducted a visual inspection of more than 35 launch models.

Close: Intel Core i9-9900KS / Core i9-9980XE / Core i9-10980XE

While the mainstream and advanced desktop market is currently converging, there are many points of view on the various competing divisions between Intel and AMD. If we don’t compete with the PCIe lanes, we will be able to beat the Core i9-9900KS (8 cores) vs 3950X (16 cores) even though there is a big price difference ($513 vs $749). If we compare prices, the closest processor to the 3950X will be 9900KS (general public) or Core i9-10940X ($729), but the 3950X has more cores than anything in between, but not as many Voice/PCIe Voices memory as the 10940X. If we choose the number of cores, the obvious candidate would be the size of the Intel Core i9-9960X, although this processor is much cheaper (unless Intel lowers the price) and is technically an X299 processor, so it has more PCIe roads and memory channels.

There is no easy comparison between any of the processors. AMD is pushing the boundaries of the standard dual-channel memory card processor, and Intel is unmatched in this space. Intel can have a conversation in an advanced office, but there are other issues with PCIe voice numbers and memory charge in between, and Intel’s current retail options are costly options. New generation Intel hardware will be released in November with some price reductions, but given the known differences between current Intel processors and next generation Intel processors, the performance gain should not be significant.

Welcome to AMD’s second golden age

The launch of AMD’s Ryzen 9 3950X earlier this week is yet another illustration of how the competitive dynamic between Intel and AMD has shifted again. From April 2017, when Ryzen was released, until July 2019, AMD and Intel were playing a familiar game of the same skill. Intel’s goal during this period was not price/performance leadership, but absolute performance, and this was done at various times with the 8700K and 9900K, as well as Skylake-X and processors such as the Core i9-9980XE.

The problem for Intel is not that the Core i9-9900K, 9900KS or 10980XE are bad processors. They are objectively great chips. The problem is that constant delays of up to 10nm have put the company in a bad position to respond to AMD’s competitive advantage. The use of chipsets has given AMD the ability to scale the number of cores in a way that Intel has trouble matching, and it’s unclear when we’ll see 10nm desktop processors struggle with Ryzen’s improvements. From 39AMD’s 50X now sets the pace for massive desktop core counts, multi-threaded performance, and even single-threaded performance in many cases.

These improvements were not limited to the desktop sector. Back on August 7, AMD released a 7nm update to its Epyc processor family. These new cores are not the only Intel one in a certain category; they have made huge improvements in every category. AMD lowered prices per core, increased IPC, and shipped many more processor cores than Intel’s equivalent socket.

Only another time AMD came close to beating Intel so decisively with the introduction of the dual-core Opteron and Athlon 64 X2 in 2005. The launch of Epyc has become more massive. In 2005, AMD’s dual-core processors matched Intel’s in core count, outperforming Intel in clock speed and per core, and were quite expensive. For 2019, AMD chose the Trifecta with higher performance, more cores, and a lower price per core. This is the most serious assault on the high-performance Intel Xeon processor market that the company has ever launched.

Industry analysts have already predicted that AMD’s server market share could double over the next 12 months, reaching 10 percent in the second quarter of 2020. Achieving greater market share in the data center market is a critical goal for AMD. Increasing enterprise and data center market share will not only increase AMD’s revenue; This will help stabilize the company’s financial performance. One of AMD’s critical failings over the past two decades has been its reliance on low-end PCs and retail sales. Both of these markets tend to be recession sensitive. The budget computer market also offers the lowest revenue per socket and the lowest margins. Enterprise business cycles are less affected by the downturn. AMD briefly achieved its goal of significant enterprise market share in 2005-2006, when its server market share exceeded 20 percent.

Enthusiasts like to focus on AMD desktop performance, but outside of gaming, overall PC sales are declining. Growth in narrow categories such as 2-to-1s was not enough to offset the overall decline in sales. While no one expects the PC market to crash, it’s clear that the 2011 downturn wasn’t unexpected. It still makes sense for AMD to fight to expand its share of the desktop and mobile market, but it makes even more sense to fight for a share of the server space, where revenue and shipments have increased over the past eight years. 2019The year could be a downturn for server sales, but the trend to move workloads to the cloud shows no signs of slowing down.

Why Rome is a threat to Intel

In our discussions of Rome, we have focused mainly on the Epyc 7742. This graph, provided by ServetheHome, shows the performance of Epyc vs. Xeon for more SKUs. Look at the stack:

ServeTheHome data and graph

A pair of AMD Epyc 7742s costs $13,900. Brace 7502 (32C/64T, 2.5GHz base, 3.35GHz boost, $2600) is $5200. The Intel Xeon Platinum 8260 processor costs $4,700, but the top-rated system has four for a total of $18,800. $13.9 AMD processors00 processors give you 1.19 times the performance of $18,800 Intel processors. The comparison doesn’t get any better when we drop the stack. Four E7-8890v4s will cost around $30,000 list price. A pair of platinum 8280s is $20,000. The 8676L is a $16,600 listed processor.

But it’s not just price or even price/performance where AMD has an edge. Intel pretty much shares the features of their product and charges significantly more from them. Consider, for example, the price difference between Xeon 8276, 8276M and Xeon Platinum 8276L. These three processors are identical except for the maximum amount of RAM each supports. Pricing, however, is anything but.

Oh, do you need 4.5 TB of RAM? It will be an additional 8 thousand dollars.

In this case, «Maximum Memory» includes Intel Optane. 4.5TB of RAM means 3TB of Optan and 1.5TB of RAM. By comparison, all 7nm Rome processors support up to 4TB of RAM. This is a standard built-in feature on all processors that makes it easier to buy products and plan ahead. AMD not only offers chips at lower prices, but also uses Intel’s market segmentation method. Good luck justifying the $8,000 price increase for additional RAM support when AMD is willing to sell you 4TB addressable capacity at the base price.

One of AMD’s conversations with Epyc is how it offers the benefits of a 2S system in a 1S configuration. This chart from ServetheHome shows the differences well:

Picture of ServeTheHome

AMD has the advantage of being able to hit multiple Intel weak spots at the same time. Need a lot of PCIe lanes? AMD is better. Want PCIe 4.0? AMD is better. If your workloads are optimally scaling with cores, no one is selling more cores per socket than AMD. Intel can still claim a few advantages — it offers much larger unified L3 caches than AMD (each individual AMD L3 cache is 16MB, and 4MB per core). But these benefits will be limited to the specific applications that respond to them. Intel wants manufacturers to invest in building support for their Optane DC persistent memory, but it’s not clear how many are doing so. The current low prices for NAND and DRAM have made it much harder for Optane to compete in the market.

Features such as DL Boost could give Intel a performance boost in AI and machine learning workloads, but the company intends to get into a decidedly uphill battle and so far the data we’ve seen suggests these factors could help Intel match AMD, not beat it.

How much do Xeons cost?

The price lists we quoted for this story are the official prices that Intel publishes for 1Kb Xeon processors. They are also widely known to be inaccurate, at least as far as major hardware manufacturers are concerned. We don’t know that Dell, HPE, and other vendors are actually paying for Xeon processors, but we do know that it’s often much less than the list price that only the retail channel usually pays.

The gap between Intel’s prices and actual prices may explain why Threadripper hasn’t gained much market penetration. Despite Threadripper processors offering significantly more cores per dollar and better performance per dollar for two years, OEMs that share sales information like MindFactory are reporting very low sales for both Threadripper and Skylake- x. With Cascade Lake, the situation has changed. Intel launches Core i9The -10980XE is about half the price of the Core i9-9980XE. AMD, in turn, is bringing 24-core and 32-core processors to market at a higher price point than previously, indicating that it believes it has a product that will be competitive even though the very best that Intel has to offer.

Intel is now playing the game AMD

Intel may cut prices to respond to AMD in the short term. In the long run, AMD will have to be challenged directly. This will mean shipping more cores at lower prices with more memory supported per socket. Cooper Lake, built at 14nm and including additional support for the new AI-focused AVX-512 instructions, will arrive in the first half of next year. The chip will help Intel focus on some of the markets it wants to compete in, but it won’t change the difference in core count between the two companies. Likewise, Intel may have trouble placing $3,000 to $7,000 premiums for 2TB to 4.5TB RAM support, as AMD is willing to support up to 4TB of memory per CPU socket.

Ice Lake servers will support up to 38 cores and Cooper Lake will have socket processor sockets up to 48 cores, but AMD already ships 64 core Epyc processors. By the time the ICL servers are ready to ship, AMD’s 7nm EUV models may also be ready. Starting with all the update cycles in Rome, AMD’s challenge over the next 12-24 months will be to see continuous, smooth frame refreshes and continuous performance improvements. If this happens, then he will have a real chance to create a stable corporate market, which he would like for decades to come.

Don’t be daring

When AMD released the dual-core Opteron and its consumer counterpart, the Athlon 64 X2, there was a certain feeling that the company was finally here. A little over a year later, Intel released the Core 2 Duo. AMD spent the next 11 years wandering in the proverbial wilderness. Later, executives admit that the company was distracted and diverted from the ATI acquisition. A succession of problems followed.

The simplistic assumption that the P4 Prescott was a disaster that Intel never recovered from turned out to be wrong. Historically, attacking Intel has often been like hitting a rubber wall with a sledgehammer (pun intended). Deforming a wall is relatively easy. Destroying it as a whole is a much more difficult task. AMD has arguably the best opportunity for enterprise market share it has ever had with 7nm Epyc, but building a server share is a slow and careful process, not a sprint of the wind. If AMD wants to keep what it builds this time around, it needs to play its cards differently than it did in 2005-2006.

But with that said, I don’t use phrases like «golden age» lightly. I am using it now. The Ryzen 9 3950X follows the successful debut of 7nm Epyc, which followed the successful launch of 7nm Ryzen. We are seeing growth in AMD processor usage across all markets, including a landmark agreement with Microsoft. Intel remains a big and entrenched competitor, but AMD has taken an aggressive lead in the processor industry in a way we haven’t seen in nearly 15 years.

While I’m not making any predictions as to how long this will last, the consistent success we’ve seen around 7nm and Ryzen in general are making it official from what I understand. Welcome to AMD’s second golden age.
