In general, there are many options. In fact, at the end of 2013, Intel decided to immediately present the buyer with a new generation of processors, or rather, SoCs.

We already know the name of our Intel Celeron J1800 processor. It is also worth determining that in the new generation there are three groups at once, which are indicated by their letter. For example, our version with the «J» index is designed for desktop PCs. «N» are for laptops. Systems with «Z» are placed in tablets.

Our hero is classified as low-performance and energy-efficient systems. This segment is referred to as SoC Bay Trail-D. Here you can find eight models. The simplest is the dual-core Celeron J1750. There is a powerful «industrial» C2750 with eight cores. In the latter case, the power consumption level is 20 watts.
In addition, the processors have different amounts of cache memory. Among all the available platforms, only Avoton did not receive an integrated graphics core. The rest of the options are crammed with all sorts of add-ons, entry-level graphics, and so on.
There are Bay Trail circuits that work in conjunction with the technology responsible for dynamic overclocking. And instead of the familiar name Turbo Boost, its name has changed to Burst Technology 2.0. The difference between them is insignificant, but the latter option is still more flexible. As a result, the technology works with the frequency dynamics of the processor and simultaneously adjusts the graphics and other components.
Two physical «hearts» in such a scheme are combined into one array, but the technology regulates the frequency on each core separately. As a result, the 2 lvl cache chooses a faster core to work with.

It is followed by our hero, the Intel Celeron J1800. Its characteristics are practically unchanged relative to the first option. The difference is only in frequencies, which can rise to 2520 MHz in turbo mode, although the starting frequency is 10 MHz lower.
The next pair of Celeron J1850 and J1900 are quad-core models. They have a frequency of 2 GHz, but the older model has a turbo mode technology that allows you to accelerate the core to 2420 MHz. They also consume 100 watts, but the amount of L2 cache has risen to 2 MB. The frequencies of the integrated graphics have also changed slightly.
Quad-core models don’t stop there. The Pentium J2850 and J2900 do not differ from the previous pair in any way, except for the frequencies. Moreover, these figures have increased significantly — up to 2410 MHz, and in the second case there is a turbo mode, which accelerated the core to 2670 MHz.
Next pair of Avoton platform: C2550 and C2750. The first option also operates on four cores. It consumes 14 W, the cache memory has 2 MB, but the manufacturers have abandoned the integrated graphics. The frequency in turbo mode rises from 2.4 GHz to 2.6 GHz. The C2750 is an octa-core model with the same frequency as the previous one. Consumes 20 W, and the cache memory has increased to 4 MB.

With this function, as usual, you can transfer both simple documents and images, as well as more serious «heavy» materials — movies and audio. But sending websites is not carried out.
Celeron J1800 received the famous «Flex» interface, now it is not considered special and revolutionary. Nevertheless, he decides to correct independent pictures, gives out data in two streams at once. At the same time, this technology requires the greatest load on the graphic component of the system.
And the last function related to media is «Clear». She is engaged in improving the quality of photos and pictures. But it has no effect on video files. Interestingly, it cannot function on portable PCs, although it plays a big role during encoding. The functions of the Celeron J1800 processor do not end there. In addition to the above, which are more related to media information, there is «Hyper» — a technology that functions for the benefit of productivity. With it, the system actively analyzes two streams at a time. In this case, the chip has to activate two cores at once for the same power. With all this, power consumption remains the same.
The TX system is related to virtualization. She supports this process and is also responsible for receiving and sending data. This should include the Intanium function, which, in particular, helps to enter data. Although it is more related to the A-32 architecture, it is still applicable in our case in security measures. In general, it also affects performance.
Testing
Along with the Celeron J1800, its older brother Celeron J1900, their competitor from the «red» company AMD A6-7400K, as well as more powerful models of the Intel Core i7, i5, etc. family were tested. As a mobile platform, our hero is inferior to many models. So, in terms of performance of computing cores, its older brother and the competing Athlon 5350 occupy the same position, while the J1800 lags behind, since it has only two cores.
Cryptography test shows the superiority of Athlon models over Intel ones. This is due to the lack of specific instructions for the latter. As a result, the Kabini crystal is much more successful in the case of encryption. Archiving the data again showed the equality of the «red» and «blue» companies, although J1800 is again lagging behind.
As a result, the dual-core model yielded to its quad-core brother in all tests. In the benchmark FHD showed 2.82 points against 5.33. And although the older crystal also showed a not too phenomenal result, the hero of our review showed a low one at all.
Analogues and competitors
Of course, this platform and its elder brother have got a lot of competitors. There were fewer analogues, although they could compete with the J1800. Among competitors, you can often find a board for which it is recommended to purchase a chip. So, for example, the ASRock AM1B-ITX motherboard paired with the AMD Athlon 5350 does an excellent job with all the tests that it passed.
The model GIGABYTE GA-J1900N-D3V has become an analogue of the monitored platform. Despite the fact that it is based on the J19 chip00, she can also easily be opposed to our hero. Although many connoisseurs believe that a competing model with a separate «motherboard» and a chip is much more profitable, since it can be easily modified and improved.
Reviews
Intel Celeron J1800 received good reviews, as the mobile-desktop platform turned out to be balanced and productive. Of course, it is not enough for super-tasks such as powerful computer games, but even so, it easily performs office and everyday tasks. As a result, the platform allows not only to create an economical and inexpensive server, but also to try to form everything into a home media center.
The main advantage, which, according to users, helped the platform become popular, is its low power consumption and heat dissipation. As a result, the system is quiet, and its dimensions allow it to be placed in a compact case.
Comparison of J1900 and J1800 makes us understand that both models are almost the same and suitable for an office system. But the older platform is still more focused on multimedia due to the larger number of cores and memory. Although those buyers who pursued everyday use did not overpay and purchased the Celeron J1800.

The desktop version of the Intel mobile platform was not very popular. The Atom family of processors remained widely known only in narrow circles — among users of embedded systems and workstations, when cost and power consumption came to the fore, and only then performance. However, with the release of Bay Trail-D, the situation began to change; today, processors of this family can be found not only in specialized systems, but also in laptops and monoblocks. We invite our readers to get to know this platform better.
Let’s try to answer the most common question right away: who needs them at all, these «underprocessors»? From the point of view of an ordinary user who needs to work and play, and even inexpensively, this is true. This category of processors could never boast of performance. But if you slightly change the perspective and remember such a part of the market as embedded systems and workstations, then everything will immediately fall into place.
Most of these systems can safely be called a «computer with one program»: cash register or banking software, payment terminal shell or information stand. Performance in such cases fades into the background, and power consumption and heat dissipation become relevant, since these devices often have to work in difficult conditions, as well as low cost and the possibility of quick repairs.
Indeed, the board with the processor soldered on it is an inexpensive and complete system with low consumption and guaranteed performance. In case of failure, we simply change the board and that’s it. You don’t have to puzzle over where to get a motherboard for the remaining processor, whether it will start with this version of the board, whether BIOS firmware is required, whether the OS will boot, etc., etc. As a separate plus, you can write low power consumption and, as a result, a fanless cooling system, which reduces possible points of failure, especially when working in difficult conditions.
The previous version of the platform Cedar Trail caused conflicting impressions, complaints were primarily about performance, which was balanced on the lower limit of acceptable for comfortable work. Any attempts to use this platform as a regular, albeit not very powerful, PC immediately revealed an extremely low level of performance.
With the release of Bay Trail the situation has improved significantly, now the performance of the platform is enough to be used as a simple workstation, a good example is a fairly large range of laptops and monoblocks on this platform.
For example, the Lenovo C260 , based on the Intel Celeron J1900 , handles most day-to-day tasks quite well under both Windows and Linux.
We are more interested in the ability to provide simple and inexpensive solutions for automating retail outlets and small offices on the basis of this platform, when the same configuration quite successfully acts both as a workstation and as a regular workstation. Allowing you to unify and reduce the cost of a set of equipment as much as possible.
A general look at the
platform First of all, we note the fact that Bay Trail is the first Intel desktop platform made in SoC format — system on a chip ( System-on-a-Chip ). This approach has a number of advantages — a simpler platform layout, since there is no need for a south bridge and additional controllers, as a result — a lower price and lower power consumption. We will not analyze the processor architecture in detail, there are specialized resources for this, but we will just briefly note the main features.
As you can see, the chip covers all the basic needs of systems of its class, providing support for modern technologies and interfaces, such as USB 3.0, HDMI or DisplayPort, this allows you to use this platform in multimedia systems, since the performance allows you to confidently work with HD content.

Marketers obviously had a hand in the formation of the product line, giving the top processor the name Pentium, although in fact it is a slightly faster Celeron J1900, at the same time, J1800 and J1900 are two different processors, and not similar models, as you might think by name . Only J1800 and J19 are available for sale as motherboards00, we met the older model only as part of finished products: monoblocks or desktop PCs, for example, HP Slimline.
However, you should not be upset about this, overpaying for the word Pentium on the box is not the best way to manage your money, especially since the J1900 is very, very good.
Test participants
Let’s start our practical acquaintance with the platform from the younger model — J1800, which will be represented by the GIGABYTE GA-J1800N-D2H motherboard (rev. 1.0) . This is one of the most expensive models on this processor, its cost at the time of this writing was $70.8.
The processor, or rather SoC, is installed in the center, and the entire strapping is located in a circle. On the one hand, this simplifies the layout of the board, and on the other hand, it forces some elements to be arranged in a very non-standard way, which can cause difficulties during assembly. So, for example, the location of the COM-port connector at the top of the board, next to the auxiliary power connector, causes criticism, in order to use it, you will have to specially purchase a bracket with a long cable and pull it through the entire board.
Also inconvenient is the additional USB on the right, right behind the heatsink, to which you have to pull the cable from the front panel of the case through the entire board. But the place traditionally occupied by these connectors is allocated for mini PCIe, which is of interest only for installing a Wi-Fi adapter.
Another drawback that we encountered is that the board does not recognize all USB keyboards at the initial boot stage, which can make it difficult to get into the BIOS settings. In all other respects, these boards made only favorable impressions, as far as stability and reliability are concerned, there are no complaints about them.
The older J1900 will be represented by the ASRock Q1900B — ITX board for $73.8.
Unlike Gigabyte, ASRock has chosen a classic layout, and the set of connectors on the rear panel, including the outdated LPT, can also be called classic. For automation purposes, this board is of interest due to the presence of two COM ports, one on the rear panel, the second — a connector on the board. The port brackets in this model are located more conveniently — at the bottom right, where we expect to see them.
And in order to understand how far Intel has come, we decided to compare the SoC data with one of the most popular processors of the past generation Atom D2550 with a frequency of 1.86 GHz in the form of ASRock AD2550B-ITX board .
Both boards from ASRock are very similar in appearance and have a similar layout. In general, work with them did not reveal any serious problems, these boards just work.
Performance Overview
Bay Trail-D Platform Representatives (J1800 and J1900) support 8 and 16 GB of RAM and incorporate an Intel HD Graphics class video adapter, which allows you to feel confident when working with any modern OS. The platform equally supports 32-bit and 64-bit Windows and Linux systems. Graphics performance allows you to work with HD resolution and all the included graphic effects of the OS, and also handles HD video without any problems.
But Cedar Trail (Atom D2550) is far from being so happy, but if the lack of support for 64-bit systems is not so important yet, due to the support of only 4 GB of RAM, then the Intel GMA 3600 video adapter crosses out all attempts to use this platform in as an ordinary, albeit not very powerful, PC. An attempt to view video in HD quality is still somehow possible for the 720p format, an attempt to view FullHD ends with a slideshow.
Working in the interface of modern operating systems is also not very responsive and requires turning off almost all graphic effects. If in the Windows 7 and 8 environment, the Intel GMA 3600 still somehow manages to draw the interface, then in such Linux DEs as Unity or KDE we encountered terrible brakes that turn the work with the OS interface into a slideshow. You can only get an acceptable level of performance with simple DEs like XFCE or LXDE.
Actually, this already brings Bay Trail-D to a fundamentally new level, allowing you to step from the «undercomputer for specific tasks» step to the «low-power general-purpose computer» step. And if you soberly assess the needs of the average office worker, it turns out that the J1800 or J19 resources00 will be enough for him.
But let’s move on from lyrics to physics. Based on each of the motherboards, we assembled systems with 2 GB of Crucial PC3-12800 RAM and a 60 Gb SmartBuy Ignition 2 SSD, the installation of an HDD was not initially considered due to the same price level for inexpensive hard drives and solid state drives. The OS used was Windows 8.1 x32.
First of all, due to our professional activities, we are interested in the work of the platform with the popular 1C:Enterprise package. Overall performance, without being tied to a specific configuration, can be evaluated Gilev test .
Let’s start with Atom D2550 :
The overall rating is bad, which roughly corresponds to subjective feelings. The platform is limitedly suitable for working with 1C, allowing you to run the application in specific modes, such as RMK (cashier’s workplace) or perform simple operations. There is no question of any comfortable work.
Celeron J1800 :
The new platform is almost twice as fast as its predecessor, taking a solid mark between satisfactory and good, we personally, choosing between ratings of 3+ or 4- are more inclined towards the latter. Indeed, the system on J1800 does not experience problems in working with Retail and UT both in RMK mode and in manager mode, which allows you to safely use this SoC not only to complete the cash registers, but also for the workplaces of merchandisers and managers.
Things are not so rosy with Accounting and Payroll, but no one promised these heavier configurations and comfortable work with them on budget hardware.
Celeron J1900 :
Despite the additional two cores, the J1900 is on a par with its younger counterpart, which can be explained by the specifics of 1C, which is more critical to the clock frequency than to the number of cores. In all other respects, everything said for the J1800 is also true for the J1900, but if the main purpose of the workstation is to work with 1C, then it is better to opt for the J1800, which has a lower price and a higher frequency as its pluses.
The next question that interests us is working with the Internet and web applications. Today, the role of the World Wide Web has smoothly shifted from HTML pages with mostly text and images to full-fledged web applications: e-mail, corporate portals, and so on. The role of the network as the main element of communication has also grown, and we can safely say that the absence of the Internet in some cases can seriously disrupt work.
We used online test 9 to evaluate performance in web applications0088 WebXPRT 2015 , which contains basic HTML5 and JavaScript scripts. To be able to compare the results, we ran another test on our working system based on the Core i5-4670 , which is difficult to classify as low-power or budget systems.
The results are generally quite expected, the Bay Trail once again shows a doubling of performance and quite good overall results. Spending 8 seconds where the i5 manages in three is normal, unlike 24 seconds for the previous generation, obviously no one will wait that long. It can be stated that the platform has overcome the lower performance bar for comfortable work with Internet applications and copes well with most tasks, at the same time, no one will expect miracles from it in heavy applications, say browser games.
Another test that reflects real computational capabilities quite well is the built-in test of the archiver. You have to work with archives quite often, for example, when backing up or installing new software. We took two popular packages WinRAR 5.10 and 7-Zip 9.35, normalized the results to improve perception, i. e. took the best result as 100% and recalculated the remaining values accordingly.
Archiving, as the test showed once again, depends on two main parameters: frequency and number of cores. Thus, the much weaker Atom practically caught up with the J1800, and the J1900 bypassed them almost twice due to four cores.
In general, even the small amount of tests that we have carried out allows us to quite clearly position this platform as a good solution for workstations and entry-level office PCs.
To decide between the older and younger models, we ran a few more tests from the PCMark 8 package.
Home accelerated test (J1800 on the left, J1900 on the right):
This set of tests repeats the most typical tasks for a non-gaming home PC. As you can see, both processors cope with most tasks in the same way, with the exception of multimedia tasks, where J1900 outperforms J1800 by about 35-40%.
Work accelerated test
As the name implies, the following set of tests represents typical work PC tasks; this test uses LibreOffice as an office suite. Here again, it’s hard to single out a leader in everything except video decoding, where the J1900 gets the same 40% advantage.
Application test
In addition to general tests, PCMark 8 allows you to evaluate performance in software packages from Microsoft and Adobe, it makes no sense to test the latter on this hardware, but the office suite from Microsoft is of some interest. Unlike LibreOffice, two additional J19 cores00 gives a small, about 15%, performance boost that roughly matches the price difference.
Energy Efficiency
The declared maximum power dissipation (TDP, Thermal Design Power) for processors of the Bay Trail-D family is 10 W, the same TDP was declared for Cedar Trail (Atom D2550), although in the latter case, you should add 2 more, 5 W to the Intel NM10 southbridge, but the numbers are still close.
In practice, the Atom D2550 proves to be a very hot system, the heatsinks heat up noticeably and in some cases an exhaust fan may be required. J1800 and J1900 proved to be the complete opposite compared to its predecessor, during the tests the processor temperature did not exceed 50-55 ° C, and the heatsink remained warm.
In practice, replacing several systems with Atom D2550, located in a closed and poorly ventilated space, with more modern J1800, we got a significant improvement in the thermal regime for the rest of the components, not counting the objective increase in performance.
Conclusions
The new version of the mobile-desktop platform from Intel turned out to be extremely balanced and successful. The performance of the new processors is enough for simple office or home tasks. There are also good prospects for creating economical and inexpensive entry-level servers (router, web server, etc.) or home media centers. A separate plus is low power consumption and heat dissipation, which allows you to assemble a truly quiet system in a compact package.
Both models on the market are not bad, while the J1800 can be safely used for office tasks, in this category it is on an equal footing with the J1900, while the latter is ahead of it in multimedia tasks.
