GeForce 800M Notebook GPUs | PC World
Nvidia promises to release chips that have higher performance and at the same time consume less power.
Michael Brown. Nvidia announces its all-new GeForce 800M line of notebook GPUs. PCWorld .
Nvidia has announced a complete overhaul of its mobile GPU family, promising to release chips that offer more processing power while consuming less power. Upgrades are underway for a range of laptops co-created with well-known gaming laptop makers Alienware and Razer, as well as mass-market vendor Lenovo.
In general, the PC market continues to fall, but sales of gaming computers (especially gaming laptops), on the contrary, are growing. The DFC/PC Gaming Alliance report says that in 2013, the PC games industry generated a combined turnover of $25 billion. Sales are expected to increase another 8% this year.
Sales of gaming equipment and PC games have brought their creators $ 25 billion, and the industry is currently growing at an annual rate of 8% |
Nvidia believes that with gaming laptops becoming thinner, lighter and more powerful, sales of new systems will continue to grow. Three years ago, a laptop equipped with Nvidia’s flagship GPU, which provided acceptable clock speeds in AAA games at a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, was about 5 cm thick. Now, a laptop with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 850M processor is only 2 cm thick, and games at the same resolution, they run 30% faster.
The most powerful of Nvidia’s new GPUs, the GeForce GTX 880M and GeForce GTX 870M, are based on the Kepler microarchitecture and manufactured using 28nm technology. Nvidia’s most powerful desktop GPUs are based on the Kepler architecture, including the GeForce GTX Titan Black. The GeForce GTX 850M model is based on the newer Nvidia Maxwell microarchitecture and is also manufactured using 28nm technology.
ShadowPlay technology allows you to organize automatic broadcasting of game sessions on the Twitch video platform.
The third processor — GeForce GTX 860M — will be available in Kepler or Maxwell versions, depending on the needs of equipment manufacturers (both options show the same performance, but have different power consumption and power dissipation characteristics). Nvidia also announced three GPUs that are positioned a class lower: the GeForce 840M and GeForce 830M models are based on the Maxwell architecture, and the GeForce 820M is based on the old Fermi microarchitecture (the same 28nm).
Three years ago, a typical gaming PC was about 5 cm thick, but now they meet the requirements for ultrabooks |
The GeForce GTX 880M and 870M processors are designed to play high-end games (Metro: Last Light, Assassin Creed IV: Black Flag, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Call of Duty: Ghosts) at 1080p, «highest» picture quality, and at least 30 frame/s The GeForce GTX 860M and 850M play the same games at the same resolution in «high» quality at 30 fps or higher.
All new GPUs share the same set of features, which include Battery Boost power management technology, ShadowPlay video capture, GameStream (for streaming PC games to a GameStream compatible device such as the Nvidia Shield), and Optimus (providing automatic switching between the graphics processor integrated in the central processing unit of a laptop computer and a discrete graphics processor depending on the workload). Some of these features are supported by previous Nvidia laptop GPUs, while others are completely new technologies. The only exception was the lack of support for combining the resources of two Nvidia SLI graphics chips in processors earlier than the GeForce GTX 850M.
Battery Boost technology provides the best balance between performance and battery life |
Nvidia Battery Boost automatically adjusts performance when the laptop is unplugged from AC power. Battery Boost takes control of the CPU, GPU, and RAM by automatically lowering screen brightness, resolution, image quality, and frame rate (up to 30 fps) to reduce battery drain and extend computer life. Nvidia claims that when powered by battery, Battery Boost technology can increase the duration of continuous operation of the PC by 2 times. Users have the ability to customize key settings, including frame rate, and disable the Battery Boost feature if they don’t want to use it.
Nvidia claims that the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4400 processors do not provide the required quality for 85% of games.
ShadowPlay video capture technology is already available on Nvidia desktop GPUs and is now supported on laptop GPUs. ShadowPlay lets you record your gaming sessions in real time at resolutions up to 1080p. The software automatically saves the last 20 minutes of the game. If something interesting happens and you have something to brag about, press a special key, and the computer will record what is happening with the H.264 hardware video codec on the Kepler architecture and with the H.265 codec on the Maxwell architecture. Manual mode is also supported, allowing you to record a game without a time limit.
To demonstrate your gaming skills, save everything that is displayed on the screen and share the resulting recordings with others |
ShadowPlay technology allows you to automatically broadcast game sessions to viewers on the Twitch video platform. Promised backwards compatibility with GeForce 700M and GeForce 600M GPUs. But that will have to wait until Nvidia releases a new version of the GeForce Experience software that ShadowPlay is part of. According to Nvidia, more than 3 million gaming sessions have already been recorded using this technology.
Nvidia GameStream technology allows you to wirelessly stream a game from a PC equipped with a GeForce GPU to a GameStream compatible device (such as the Nvidia Shield compact gaming device). In this case, the game is controlled using the joystick and Shield buttons, and the image can be viewed on the Shield display or on an HD TV connected via an HDMI cable.
Almost all laptops these days come with integrated graphics processors to conserve battery power. Nvidia Optimus technology is designed to switch between discrete and integrated GPU. When running applications that do not require a lot of graphics resources, Optimus turns off the discrete GPU and shifts the entire load to the CPU. When you start a game or graphics application, the discrete GPU turns on again and starts rendering. There is no need to restart the computer. Optimus is already supported on all Nvidia laptop GPUs.
While the quality of Intel’s integrated graphics has improved significantly over the years, even Haswell microarchitecture processors are not capable of playing AAA-class games at high resolution and good quality. Nvidia claims that the Intel HD Graphics 4400 integrated into the 4th generation Core processors for the mainstream consumer does not provide acceptable quality for 85% of games. And the integrated Intel Iris 5100 graphics processor, installed in the most expensive Core processors, is not suitable for 75% of games (Nvidia considers the playback mode with a resolution of 1366 × 768 pixels and a frequency of 30 fps without significant visual distortion to be the minimum acceptable).
If Nvidia’s claims are true, it becomes clear why there are so few computers in the world with Intel Iris Pro 5200 integrated graphics |
Nvidia is reporting even greater benefits in terms of power consumption, a critical feature for a battery-powered laptop. If you run the Elder Scrolls role-playing game at 1080p screen resolution, medium image quality, and 10 fps on a laptop equipped with an Intel Core i5-4210U processor, the CPU and integrated GPU will consume 15 watts. When running the same game at the same resolution and image quality on a laptop with the same CPU and Nvidia GeForce GTX 840M GPU, the frame rate can be increased to 30fps while power consumption only rises to 17W. Thus, the frame rate will triple, and the power consumption will increase by only 2 watts.
The efficiency gains are even more impressive when compared to the best-in-class Intel Iris Pro Graphics 5200 integrated GPU. According to Nvidia, the Intel Core i7-4750HQ laptop processor will consume 43W at 19fps in Skyrim at 1080p. We were unable to verify this claim because the PCWorld lab does not have tools to measure the isolated power consumption of the two components, but we reached out to Intel for comment and will be sure to return to this story when we get a response.
