Huo Yuan Jia: I believe that there’s no superiority or inferiority in Wushu. Just the distinction of practitioners with different levels of ability. Through the competition we can discover this and meet the true self. Because indeed the antagonist is namely ourself. Only through competition, can one recognise one’s true self.

Jet Li’s paean to martial arts

Make no mistake about it, Fearless is the best straight-ahead martial arts film since Jackie Chan’s seminal Drunken Master 2. Director Ronny Yu crams more bone-jarring, well crafted fight scenes into the first forty minutes of this movie than most films can match in their entire runtime. This is a canny move, as it pulls in the viewer via the blurring action before beginning to develop the film’s narrative in the middle third. While the story is a well used one (kung-fu bully comes to realise his skills can be used to educate rather than brutalise), it’s a perfect structure on which to hang the film’s many excellent confrontations. It’s obvious that this film is Li’s love letter to his Wu Shu background and martial arts in general. In dramatic terms, Fearless never reaches the heights of recent wuxia movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or Hero and so is unable to feel truly fulfilling as a great movie per se. It is however up there with Jet Li’s very best work in the genre, OUATIC & Fist of Legend for example, and if it is (sadly) true that it is to be his last period martial arts picture, it’s a hell of a bang to go out on.

Who was the real Huo Yuanjia 霍元甲? — Jeremiah Jenne

I just finished the movie Fearless (霍元甲) Jet Li’s self-proclaimed final wushu film. The movie itself is not bad (Not that I’m much of a movie critic). It’s about equal parts Fists of Fury and Rocky IV (compare the final fight scenes) with a dash of Raging Bull and an inexplicable Dances with Wolves second act. I like wushu movies and this as good as any, I guess. I can also see why it was so popular in China. The sight of the lithe and deadly-looking Jet Li beating the crap out of a giant white guy (in this case Aussie professional wrestler Nathan Jones) wearing red, white, and blue shorts must be as satisfying for the average Chinese teenage male as it was for my young punk ass to watch American Hero Rocky Balboa beat down the steroid-pumped Ruskie, Ivan Drago, back in 1985.

    *****************************************
A quick spoiler alert: Most Chinese are familiar with the story of Huo Yuanjia and so know the basic plot of the movie. If you don’t know the story and don’t want to know what happens, you might want to stop reading here.

    *****************************************

The movie is loosely based (sometimes VERY loosely) on the life of Huo Yuanjia 霍元甲 (1860-1910), one of China’s most famous martial artists. Much has been made of the liberties taken with the life of the real Huo Yuanjia in making this film and one of Huo’s descendants, Huo Shoujin, even filed a lawsuit against Jet Li himself trying to block its distribution. Huo’s family were angered by scenes showing the famous hero callously killing his opponents and annoyed that in the movie Huo’s whole family is killed off as revenge for his actions. (I could see why this might be disconcerting to his grandkids.) The plaintiffs also charged that the movie depicts Huo Yuanjia as growing up in an upper-class household with servants when in reality Huo’s family made their living by farming.

With so much creative license taken, what is the story of the real Huo Yuanjia? Huo is most famous for challenging foreign fighters at a time when China herself was under threat of ‘being carved up like a melon’ by the imperialist powers. Whether or not those foreign fighters ever stepped into the ring with Huo is perhaps less important than Huo as a symbol, both in the early 20th century as well as today, of Chinese patriotism and nationalism.

Huo was born in 1868, the middle of three brothers in the village of Xiaonanhe which is today part of the Tianjin municipality. His father Huo Endi (霍恩第) practiced a style of fighting known as Mizongquan 秘宗拳 (later the style became known as Mizongyi 秘宗义) and earned a living as a farmer and occasional hired goon for the caravan trade.

Young Huo Yuanjia was sickly as a boy (in the movie, he has asthma) and so his father refused to train him in the martial arts. As in the movie, Huo Yuanjia watched in secret and soon became quite adept. Promising his father he would not take part in any competitions (a promise he would eventually break), his father agreed to train him and in no time Huo Yuanjia surpassed both of his brothers in skill.

In 1890, Huo won his first well-known bout, subduing a traveling wushu fighter named Du who had come to challenge the Huo family in combat. Yuanjia’s victory over Du made Huo’s reputation as a daring young fighter. Soon after, like a lot of other young men at the time, Huo Yuanjia migrated to the city. In Tianjin, he participated in organized fights and did a variety of odd jobs including warehouseman and bill collector (read: house thug) for a promising young Tianjin merchant named Nong Jinsun (农劲荪) who dealt in herbs and Chinese medicines. Nong and Huo were to form a lifetime friendship.

It was also about this time that Huo met his most famous disciple, Liu Zhensheng (刘振声 who is seen briefly in the movie) and had his first brush, of sorts, with national politics.

After the failure of the 100 Days reform in 1898, one of the leading figures of the movement, Tan Sitong (谭嗣同) was executed and his head put on display. One of Tan’s friends was a Muslim merchant and martial arts expert in Beijing named Wang Zhengyi (王正宜) also known by his nickname Dadaowangwu 大刀王五 or Broadsword King #5. (He was the fifth son in his family and his favorite weapon was, well you know…) After Tan’s execution, Wang fled Beijing and ended up in Tianjin where he and Huo took an immediate liking to one another. According to legend, Huo even helped Wang sneak back into Beijing to steal Tan’s head so that the famous reformer could be buried properly. Wang Zhengyi later would join the forces of the Boxer Rebellion and be killed in Beijing fighting the Allied Forces 八国联军 in 1900.

Meanwhile, Huo’s fame spread. In 1901, a Russian strongman was making the rounds in Tianjin, challenging Chinese fighters and calling the Chinese “The sick men of Asia.” According to legend, when no other Chinese fighter would answer the Russian’s challenge, Huo stepped up and accepted the fight. The Russian then allegedly backed out claiming to be only a showman. The Russian was asked — and apparently agreed — to write a letter to the Tianjin newspaper retracting his claims slandering the Chinese people though I haven’t been able to find a copy or record of this letter so far.

In 1909, another foreign fighter, the English boxer Hercules O’Brien, put an advertisement in the Shanghai newspapers insulting the Chinese as weak. Huo asked his friends to go to Shanghai and arrange a fight. After considerable negotiations (O’Brien wanted only punches above the waist and no kicking), the terms of the fight were settled. According to most of the accounts I have read, O’Brien grew so concerned about Huo’s fearsome reputation that he ended up fleeing the country and apparently the fight never took place.

Huo capitalized on his fame and with the help of investors, including his old friend Nong Jinsun, established his legacy: the Jing Wu Athletic Society. (精武体操学校 later changed to 精武体育会) He attracted many students as well as the attention of some of China’s leading figures. Sun Yat-sen (孙中山) himself praised the school and said, regarding the Jing Wu Society, “To make a country strong, everyone must practice the martial arts.” (欲使国强,非人人习武不可) Dr. Sun even graced the school with his calligraphy (such as it was) inscribing the words for martial spirit (尚武精神) and giving it as a gift to the club.

Huo Yuanjia died relatively young, and his death is surrounded by myth and mystery. According to the story told by Huo’s descendants, the Japanese Judo Association came to Huo Yuanjia’s school to ask for a competition. A disciple of Huo disciples broke the arm of one of the association leaders. After that, the Japanese nursed a grudge against Huo but feigned friendship. When Huo became ill, they took him to a Japanese doctor who then poisoned Huo.

Other sources say that it was Huo who, in competition, defeated the head of the Japanese Judo association. At the banquet that night, Huo suddenly became ill, violently coughing. Huo was taken to a Japanese hospital where he was given, allegedly on purpose, the wrong medicine. He then died a short time later.

Like a lot of famous figures whose lives become encrusted by myth and legend, we might never know the actual truth. Huo apparently suffered from some kind of respiratory problem most of his life and it is not impossible that this might also have led to his death especially after nearly two decades in competitive fighting. Nevertheless, the story of the Japanese treacherously poisoning China’s most patriotic wushu champion persists and a version of the story, again with considerable creative license, figures prominently in the new movie as well.

After Huo’s death, the leadership of the Jing Wu Association passed to Huo’s younger brother, Huo Yuanqing (霍元卿), and Huo Yuanjia’s second son, Huo Dong’ge(霍东阁). After his death, the Jing Wu School spread throughout China and the world. In the movie, Huo’s family is killed as a result of his reckless actions. In reality, Huo was survived by two sons: the aforementioned Huo Dong’ge and Huo Dongzhang (霍东章).

What interests me most about Huo Yuanjia’s story is what Huo meant to the Chinese people of his day. How did the stories of Huo challenging the foreign fighters fit within the context of the times? What sort of symbol was he to those who saw a brighter future for China, a future free of foreign domination? The Qing dynasty was in its last few years and as the empire crumbled, foreign powers from Europe and elsewhere began plotting how best to carve up the remains. At the same time, it was also an age of considerable revolutionary fervor, even optimism, and the beginnings of a great quest for national identity.

Writers such as Liang Qichao 梁启超 and Yan Fu 严复 began asking important questions about China’s past and future. What did it mean to be Chinese in the ‘modern’ world? How could China become a powerful, wealthy, and independent nation? In many ways, these are questions that China is still asking at the turn of this, the 21st century. Perhaps that is why the stories of Huo Yuanjia, the great wushu patriot, still have such currency nearly 100 years after his death.

    Top notch martial arts movie

Obviously this movie isn’t geared towards younger kids, but older kids will be fine with it. There’s some sad and bloody deaths in the film so if showing with sensitive or younger kids, you may want to preview it first so you know when to fast-forward.
It’s very violent (what martial arts film isn’t?) but also tries to have a good message. at least from the perspective of the main character and his fans. Definitely portrays the US and UK etc. as «the bad guys» so maybe have a discussion afterwards about how this shows history «from a certain point of view» etc. We enjoyed it were, as always, amazed by Jet Li’s speed and skills.
There are several scenes in which people toast one another with wine and blood is shown several times.

    Huo Yuanjia

This is not the typical fighting movie. It is also definitely not for an immature audience.
****This movie takes multiple viewings to truly appreciate.
Huo Yuanjia, Jet Li, starts the movie off by defeating 3 people in a row and before the 4th fight he has a flashback. During this flashback you see him as a child, where he watches his dad get defeated, his dad would not land the final blow. After this he fights his dads opponents’ son… and loses. Huo then vows to never be defeated again.
The movie goes on to show how his «adulthood» played out. Needless to say, he was not the best role model and takes the life of another in a fight.
After he learns it was all for not, he leaves and travels until a small tribe takes him in. While with these people he learns what he has done wrong and truly takes it to heart. *speed up about 20 minutes* and we are back to the final fight: Huo and Tanaka. [you will know the reason if you watch the movie].
Tanaka knows that the Japanese business man played dirty and declares Huo the winner, Huo used a similar punch from earlier that killed someone— but did not follow through with it. Tanaka declares Huo the winner and Huo shortly dies afterwards.
The end scene of the movie is the best in my opinion, the ghost of Huo is training and Moon can feel his presence.
Anyone who would say only Jet Li fans and martial art fans would like this, did not understand the movie fully.
    Overall: A+
Definitely not for kids or most teens(they will not understand the reasons in the movie).

This story begins with a child who only understands winning. Therefore, as an adult, his pride prevents him from understanding compassion. However, he learns this through very difficult trials in his life and comes through the other side of the tunnel standing up for compassion and understanding that winning isn’t everything.

    This is a must see

I’m a fan of the old martial arts/foreign films and I have to say is that this a must see. Not just the fighting scenes but also the philosophy of the movie really makes you think. You have some of these movies in America that are just shoot ’em up movies… but foreign movies you have to think and look at the morals of the movie. This movie if you think about it and see what that «meaning» means than you will understand the movie..

    Fine for 13 and up

The movie was some adult themes like revenge, but the only other concern would be the violence. This fight scenes are not overly graphic and, as with most Chinesse martial arts movies, the combat is so acrobatc it is unrealistic. Most teens will be able to relate the violence to that of a cartoon. No one believes that they can fall off a cliff like Wyle E. Coyote, hit the ground and hold up a sing that says «Ouch». The same is true for being able to balance on pole tops while fighting or punches that cause massive internal damage. While the movie is about fighting, it is easly perceived as artificial.

In the world of cinema: The Pathfinder — an epic battle between love and hate

The film Fearless, starring martial arts master Jet Li, was released in Russian cinemas. Tons of great action scenes and a compelling storyline, all done in 90 days, of which 60 days were spent filming action scenes.

This film might never have come into existence if, quite by chance, in 2004 while passing through Hong Kong, producer Bill Kong did not discuss the script about the Chinese martial artist Ho Yuanjia with director Ronnie Yu. Of course, when it came to actor Jet Li, who was proposed for the title role, Ronnie exclaimed Yes! It is he. I agree. In fact, Jet Li is the only actor out of all who can really do everything: he really knows martial arts, he does all his own stunts, and besides, he is a real actor.

Fearless is already a box office hit in Asia. Actor Jet Li played the legendary martial artist Huo Yuanjia, who was China’s most famous fighter in the early 20th century. Jet Li, one of the few world-class star actors, is also an internationally recognized martial artist. Lee has appeared in more than two dozen films in Hong Kong and China. Many of them were both box office and critical successes. Among them are several films released under the general title Once Upon a Time in China, in which he played the role of the legendary folk hero Wong Fei Hung. He also starred in the films Heroes, Romeo Must Die, From the Cradle to the Grave, The Standoff and others. Jet Li was a four-time MTV Movie Award nominee. Fight choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping has long been regarded as one of the finest action choreographers and began studying martial arts at a very young age under the guidance of his father, a respected martial artist and actor. The first film in which he participated as a director of action scenes was MAD KILLER. Fearless is his eighth film to work with Jet Li.

    Behind the scenes!

Li, who wanted to play Huo Yuanjia for a very long time and devoted more than ten years to preparing the film about him, and producer Bill Kong, who together with Li made the international blockbuster Heroes, finally joined forces to ensure that the film was finally made . The filmmakers were aware that the screen version of Huo Yuanjia’s story should not be just an action movie. The script, written by Chris Chou and Kristin To, assumed that the actor’s own experience would be used to reveal the image of the famous fighter. The character played by Lee turned out to be very close to him. Jet Li put all his martial arts experience into this film. While portraying his hero, he tried to show on the screen the role of martial arts in his life and explain why he does it. A great help in bringing the image of Ho to the screen was given to Jet Li by his longtime close friend and colleague, the wonderful choreographer of action scenes, Yuen Wu-Ping. This outstanding duo recently worked together on the hit Danny the Watchdog, and there was no way Lee could do a new, very personal project without Woo Ping. For example, for the decisive match scene, the filmmakers assembled an amazing international team of world-class fighters: seven-time world kickboxing champion Jean-Claude Leyer (English boxer in the tournament scene), world-class star, wrestler, Australian bodybuilding champion Nathan Jones — in the scene on ring. As well as the famous swordsman Anthony De Longis (Spanish fencer in the tournament scene). According to Wu Ping, this circumstance facilitated his work and at the same time complicated it. However, thanks to the unprecedented scale of fighting talent gathered in Fearless, the film managed to show what Ronnie Yu calls action: long, uncut scenes that demonstrate the skills of the participants — instead of short cuts and close-ups that hide the flaws of newcomers.

    Plot:

He was the son of a famous fighter who did not want the boy to follow in his footsteps, and Ho, intimidated by his father, decided that he would learn to fight on his own and he succeeded. Years of training allowed him to win match after match in his hometown of Tianjin. However, as his fame as a martial artist grew, so did his pride. After an imprudent fight that resulted in the death of his opponent, members of the Huo family were killed out of revenge. Overwhelmed with grief and shame, the shocked Ho wandered around the country. He was saved from certain death by a woman who lived in an idyllic village — her amazing kindness and generosity healed him and helped him find peace of mind. Ho realized that in the future martial arts should rely not on rudeness and cruelty, but on courage and decency, and he returned to life and to people in order to put into practice everything he had learned.

Back in Tianjin, Ho tried to reconcile the present with the past and restore his family’s good name. Invented by him an elegant way of fighting a missed fist brought him success, and he organized a progressive sports society — Jingwu Sports Federation. But it so happened that the duplicitous members of the Foreign Chamber of Commerce, the organizers of the championship in Shanghai, began to incite Huo against four foreign participants in the competition, representing very strong foreign fighting schools in China. Ho comes face to face with a British boxer, a Spanish swordsman, a Belgian soldier and a Japanese martial artist. What happened on that distant day10 years, has not been forgotten so far and will never be forgotten in China.

Voice-over. Middle of the 15th century. The Ottoman Empire peacefully annexes the Principality of Wallachia. As proof of the purity of his intentions, the ruler of Wallachia sends his sons as hostages to the Turks. So the future ruler of Wallachia, known as Vlad the Impaler (Dracula), ends up in the palace of Sultan Murad. There he is brought up together with his son Shahzade Mehmed, the future conqueror of the world (Fatih). This acquaintance opened a new page in the age-old history of the struggle between good and evil, between justice and cruelty.

Earth, water, air and fire are the four verses from which everything that exists has arisen. And if one of the two became a Rose, then the second turned into an Oleander, which poisons everything around it. This means that it must be pulled out of the earth, burned on fire and scattered over water.

Vlad Tepes walks between long rows of impaled people to the gates of his castle. There he gives an audience to the Ottoman ambassador. He reads to Tepes the decree of Sultan Mehmed: you now consider yourself the son of the Dragon, that is, the heir of the devil. And that means you’re no longer my brother. Sitting on your throne, you sow only evil, shedding human blood in powerful streams. For this you will pay a high price, which should be equal to the cruelty of your deeds. But while you still have the opportunity to squeeze out at least a drop of mercy from my heart.

Tepes interrupts the messenger. The turban on your head brings back the saddest memories for me. I then lived in the palace of the Sultan, there I was surrounded by many people in the same turbans, and there was always one spoiled boy named Mehmed nearby. And I well remember the dark nights in the walls of this palace, which I spent shedding tears. So take that turban off your head! The ambassador replies that Tepes will be able to remove the turban from his head only after he dares to kill the envoy of the Sultan.

Tepes’ henchmen hold the Ottoman ambassador by the chains in which his hands are shackled. The ambassador shouts to Tspeshu: you will never get away with this crime. Tepes takes a metal crutch and with a blow of a hammer drives his Turk into the crown of the head.

Mehmed comes to the park. He opens the door of a cage hanging on a tree branch, takes out a bird and releases it into the wild. A man dressed in a suit of tree bark comes out from behind a tree to Mehmed. This is the magician Baba Sultan. You have freed the bird and thereby removed a heavy burden from your sorrow-weary heart. Mehmed tells Baba Sultan: this Vlad Tepes causes great suffering to people. But this seemed to him not enough. He executed my ambassador who delivered my warning to Wallachia. Therefore, Tepes should be roughly punished. Baba Sultan: and then the fate of Vlad Tepes will be a warning to all villains on three continents. Mehmed: make sure that all the Dauntless Muslims of the world know about my will, spread the word about it to them.

Baba Sultan sends a falcon with a message.

At the top of the mountain sits the leader of the Dauntless, the warrior Gokkurt. A falcon flies to him, Gokkurt reads the message sent to him by Baba Sultan. Gokkurt rises and loudly blows a huge horn. The fearless mount their horses and rush to Baba Sultan. Gokkurt: you thought about us and we came to you. Our weapons are your weapons, and we are ready to give our lives for the Sultan. Baba Sultan informs the Fearless about the atrocities of Vlad Tepes. You are the children of your country. You have the decree of the Sultan and the law. Get on your way and punish the tyrant for the atrocities he has committed.

Before the Dauntless leave, Baba Sultan gives one of them, Kuman, his magic locket. This is the mirror of my soul. I can send messages to you with it.

In a cave filled with alchemical accessories, a man tied to a table wakes up: where am I? What happened with me? A gray-bearded Alchemist approaches him: I am treating you. Tepes enters the cave: what about the weapon? Alchemist: After I infected the rats with the plague, red moss stopped helping them. And when I first fed the rats red moss, they became difficult to deal with. Tepes: I’m not interested in details. What’s with the weapons? When will it be ready? Alchemist: When it’s ready, you can conquer any city. Moreover, its walls and buildings will remain intact, but all people, animals and even insects will die. Tepes: and what do you need for this? I need more rats, they’re almost all dying. What else? Also red moss. Tepes shouts to his assistants: did you hear what he said? Deliver it to him immediately! Alchemist: and then Constantinople will be yours overnight, all the Turks will flee to where they came from. Impaler: do everything as soon as possible, otherwise you will have a worse fate than your «patient».

Small village. The boys are arguing about whether the Dauntless exist. My father says it’s fiction. And my father claims that they really are. There are shouts: the soldiers are coming! The commander of the Tepes detachment convenes the inhabitants of the village: everyone is here! We need rats, we change them for gold. The one who brings a full cage of rats will receive a bag of gold.

Tepes Castle. The Gospodar is talking to his wife Elizabeth about a new weapon. I will destroy Mehmed, erase his traces from history, I will bring down on him and his people epidemics, diseases and famine. Elizabeth: And the Pope will support you in this. Impaler: The Pope has no real power, he leads the faithful by the nose. These fools bathe children in the water they call holy, they stand in line at the service for wine and bread. But I will arrange a real hell for the Turks. I am the hand of the Lord, I am the messenger of God on Earth!

Tepes’ soldiers take cages filled with rats from the villagers. One of the residents asks: where is the gold? The squad leader pierces him with a sword. Anyone else want to know about gold?

In the evening, the Dauntless settle down for a halt, they camp around a fire in a cave. It’s raining outside. In the rain, raising his head to the sky, stands one of the Fearless — Ashkar. Gokkurt explains: he remembers his brother, whom he could not save in battle from death. Gokkurt goes out into the rain, takes Ashkar by the hand, and leads him into the cave. You need to eat.

The Dauntless are discussing a plan for further action, they have approached the borders of the lands controlled by Tepes. Someone suggests approaching the tyrant’s castle from the north, since in the south the Tepes soldiers are busy ruining local villages. But Ashkar suggests going straight to where the villainy is happening in order to help people. Gokkurt agrees.

The alchemist is summoned to speak with Elizabeth. He comes out of the cave. How are things going? The weapon is almost ready. Elizabeth puts a knife to the old man’s throat: almost? He replies: done. This conversation is overheard by a boy who lives in a neighboring village. He runs to his grandfather. There are rats! They killed an old man there because of the rats! There are weapons! And then there was the princess! The grandfather asks the boy to calm down and tell him everything in detail.

Tepes’ soldiers are watching what is happening in the village from the mountain. The commander gives the order: to take away all the gold and silver, not to leave anyone alive.

Aladja, a young woman, brings food to the forge. Eat, father! And this is for your cough. There are shouts in the street: they are coming! Save yourself! The blacksmith says to his daughter: stay here. He takes the sword and leaves the forge. Tepes’ soldiers burst into the village, killing everyone in a row. The blacksmith enters into battle with the soldiers, he is killed with a sword stab in the back.

The Dauntless watch the burning village from the mountain.

Aladzha, with a burning brand in her hand, tries to fight off the Tepes soldiers who surrounded her. One of the soldiers laughingly knocks the firebrand out of the girl’s hands. His laughter is interrupted by an arrow piercing the back of the head and exiting through the eye. The Fearless rush into the village on horseback. They destroy Tepes warriors using various types of cutting, stabbing and slashing weapons. Gokkurt rides up to Aladzha, holds out his hand to her, puts her on a horse in front of him and takes her out of the war zone.

The bloodstained Dauntless stand in the middle of the village. Gokkurt gives the command: Suskun, check for any survivors. Ashkar approaches Aladzha, hides the sword in the scabbard: do not be afraid, we will not touch you. Aladja cries over the body of a dead blacksmith. Gokkurt consoles her: he died a martyr, now he is in heaven, with Allah. Anyone can envy such a death.

Suskun walks around the village. He hears a child’s cry, sees a murdered woman and a baby lying next to her mother.

Flashback. Little Suskun sits in a hut next to the body of his wounded mother. He loudly calls for help. An armed man enters the hut. It’s good that you screamed, we wouldn’t have found you that way. The man takes out a dagger and finishes off the wounded woman. Next time, think before you scream.

Suskun brings the baby to his comrades.

The fearless on the field meet a shepherd with a flock of sheep. They stop, choose a lambing sheep, give the shepherd money. Suskun milks a sheep, fills her horn with milk.

Aladzha is talking to Ashkar: I have no one else, all my relatives were killed by Tepes’ soldiers. My adoptive father was a blacksmith, he was one of those Turkmens who moved to permanent residence in the Wallachians. Aladzha misunderstands Ashkar’s gaze on her cleavage and tries to hide the cross in her bosom. Ashkar: Faith is a personal matter for each person. On the lands of the Ottomans, no one is persecuted for their faith. So you can’t hide it. Aladja shouts to Suskun: hey, what are you doing! So they don’t give milk to children. She gets off her horse, takes the child from Suskun and feeds the baby.

Tepes Castle. The head of his guard, Kostel, reports: all your units sent to plunder the southern villages have been destroyed. Only this one survived. Tepes addresses a soldier who escaped from the hands of the Fearless: what happened? They appeared suddenly, the chief had wings behind his back, the rest were dressed in animal skins, just monsters. They killed everyone. But what about you? How many were there? Okay, you must be hungry? Tepes brings the fugitive to a table laden with dishes, grabs him from behind by the neck and puts his face to the tabletop: how many were there? Then he turns to Kostel: find and destroy!

Fearless at rest. Aladzha addresses the youngest of them: why are you called Adsiz (Nameless)? He says that the military name must be earned, it is not easy to pick it up. After this trip, I might pick up a real name for myself.

Gokkurt says: there is a gypsy camp nearby, these are my friends. They must have food. Here we can leave the child with them.

A wedding is celebrated in the camp, gypsies dance, sing, have fun. The Dauntless appear. The head of the gypsies Rosa orders: take the horses from them. Gokkurt addresses her: we have a baby, he is hungry. Rose: We have food. She turns to Aladja: are you his mother? No. Rosa asks Suskun, who is holding the baby: are you his father? Yes. Gokkurt explains to Rosa that they found the child and the girl in the village, which Tepes’ soldiers ravaged. Rosa: we have a wedding, we are walking, join us! Gokkurt: thanks, we’ll sit quietly in the corner.

The man in the cave of the Alchemist comes to his senses, delirious. The alchemist cuts through his chest with a knife, cuts out pieces of bloody flesh from the prisoner’s body. With your help, your meat and blood, I will create a real army. Alchemist feeds rats with human flesh: eat, my little warriors!

Rosa and a young red-haired woman named Mariam approach the Dauntless by the fire. Rosa says that Mariam, like herself, is Jewish. After their fellow tribesmen were killed by the Tepes soldiers, they hid for some time on the lands of the Ottoman Empire. And that man over there escaped from the atrocities of Tspesh from Torgovishta.

Aladja asks Ashkar: don’t you have anyone? You asked me about everything, now I want to know about you. Ashkar says he has other Dauntless. And besides them? Mother, brothers? Ashkar: I haven’t seen my parents since I was six years old. Our path is not made for family ties.

Rosa tells the Dauntless: I was barely able to take the baby from your Suskun. When you love someone so much, you don’t want to let them go.

Gokkurt tries to wake up Suskun in the morning. Aladzha asks to let him sleep more: he, sitting next to the baby, did not close his eyes all night.

Ashkar says to Aladja: we must go. Our path is not for women and children. There are good people here, stay with them. And we will have to fight with the people of Tepes. Aladja: this baby will remind me of you. I will take care of him all my life. Gokkurt gives the signal to depart. He appeals to Rosa: take good care of Suskun’s son! Aladzha looks after the Starless: now I know that I have friends among the Ottomans.

Passing through the territory of the camp, the Dauntless stop near the swing, on which a little girl is sitting. Roza explains that this is the only child from the Turkmen village who survived after the people of Tepes massacred her entire family. The girl tells Gokkurt: when I meet Allah, I will tell him about the suffering of my loved ones. Gokkurt: You don’t have to meet a god to do that. He has already sent his lions to avenge you.

An envoy from the Pope arrives at Tepes Castle. He hands the casket to the ruler. There is a crown. The Ambassador says: The Pope is very glad that you drove the Turks away. He called you the protector of the faithful and ordered that this crown be given to you. You are more important to him than any cardinal. Elizabeth: This is a great honor for us! After all, Vlad is now the protector of all who believe in Jesus Christ! Tepes turns to the ambassador: tell the Pope that I will not be a slave or a guard to anyone. When I erase Mehmed from the pages of history, I will come to the Pope himself and put his throne on his head if he does not recognize that I am the son of the Lord. Tepes puts the crown on the head of the ambassador, raises his hand to his lips. The ambassador is forced to kiss the ring depicting the devil’s head on Tepes’s finger. All right, tell your master that I forgive him for the time being insolence in front of me.

While resting, Gokkurt addresses one of the Fearless — Mubariz: you open your eyes only at night, and during the day they are closed. You don’t like the strong sun of our region? During the day I sleep, but I hear everything. Our sun is as strong as yours. But we, on the shores of the Caspian, have a completely different evening. And at night I stay awake so that the moon is not sad.

Ashkar says to Suskun: don’t be sad about the baby. It’s for his own good, because our mistress is death. One of the Dauntless — Kongar — greets Ashkar’s words with laughter. Ashkar reproaches him for this, calls him a jester. Gokkurt advises Ashkar: are you angry with him? So pierce it with your sword. But then you will turn your weapon against yourself. For Kongar had buried his comrades so many times that his heart had hardened. Suskun’s heart went numb. You will become like him, or you will laugh like Kongar.

Baba Sultan communicates with Kuman through a magic medallion: open your wings, remember that you are not alone, that you are the truth. And now the wolves have come to you! Gokkurt commands the alarm. Kongar is severely wounded by an arrow fired from a bow. The Dauntless destroy the Tepes soldiers who suddenly attacked them.

Ashkar is grieving over Kongar’s injury, wants to stay with him, find a healer for him: then he will survive. But Gokkurt tells Ashakr that he must prove himself on the battlefield. And Koeman will do whatever is right.

Kuman puts Kongar on his horse and sets off with him on his way back. The Dauntless penetrate further into the domain of Tepes.

The Dauntless enter the tavern. There are fights without rules. The fighter who has defeated his opponent bullies the Fearless, calls them cowards, compares their silence with the behavior of the Turks impaled by Tepes. Suskun gets up from the table, enters the ring, beats the bully, breaks his arm, throws him to the floor, sits on top and beats him to death with his fists. Then he returns to the table, his comrades pin the best pieces on his plate.

The Dauntless stop at the river bank. Gokkurt asks Adsiz to look for a place with cleaner water. He goes on reconnaissance, he is taken prisoner by the soldiers of Tepes.

The Fearless enter a village where a villager who demanded payment for rats was killed. They meet Gokkurt’s friend, the priest Karali. He says that there is a secret passage leading to the Tepes castle. And the Alchemist in the cave is preparing a bacteriological weapon for Tepes — rabid plague rats. The Fearless instruct the priest to deal with the rats, and they themselves go to the rescue of Adsiz.

Karali enters the cave, scatters gunpowder there, sets off an explosion.

Tepes tortures Adsis, he bites off his finger with tongs. Adsis says nothing to his tormentor.

The Dauntless are approaching Tepes Castle. They see a tyrant coming out at the head of an army. He goes out to the meadow where the place for the execution of Adsis has been chosen. Adsiz shouts to the Dauntless: I didn’t tell him anything! Tepes slits Adsis’ throat in front of the Fearless. Gokkurt gives the command, and the Dauntless charge into Tepes’ army. He calls the Dauntless fools and orders the soldiers to destroy a handful of brave men. Archers of Tepes launch arrows with set fire tips towards the Fearless. Arrows fly into the haystacks along the path of the Dauntless. Gunpowder is hidden in the stacks. Haystacks explode, Fearless are showered with burning straw. Despite this, they continue the attack completely unscathed. A frightened Tepes puts a helmet on his head. Voice-over of Baba Sultan: Motherland will never forget you. Cavalry comes to the aid of the Fearless. The battle begins. A recovered Kongar appears, who also takes part in the battle.

The Dauntless and their allies defeat Tepes’ army. The tyrant himself in a full-time duel is defeated by Gokkurt. The bloodied and debilitated Tepes is on his knees. He says: again, father, you betray me into the hands of the Turks. But if I go down into darkness, then you will go there with me.

With a cry of «In the name of Allah!» Gokkurt cuts off Tepes’ head. Like this: the body in one direction, and the head in the other.

The Dauntless approach the body of Adsis. His teacher Mubariz says that until now the nameless warrior gets a name. Now he is Hamza, the lion hunter.

The Dauntless carry Hamza’s body on a stretcher. Gokkurt says: we are the Fearless, those who die once and be born a thousand; they are those who drown tyrants in their blood; these are their swords — light in the darkness; it is they who destroy the thrones and crowns, and then go to the mountains; they are buried in unmarked graves; it is they who go to their death so that others do not die; they are the ones who go ahead and don’t come back. They are called the Fearless.

In the cave, the Alchemist gives Elizabeth a cage. He says that’s not all. Elizabeth removes the cover from the cage, there is a rat. She bares her teeth and throws herself against the bars of the cage.
