How to convert Controller client application to run using LAA («Large Address Aware») enabled

Customer is experiencing intermittent «OutOfMemoryException» errors on a client device which is based on a 64-bit operating system, and has more than 2Gb RAM installed.
How can the Controller client be modified to allow it to use more than 2Gb RAM (typically the full 4Gb potential that is physically allowed)?

There are many potential «OutOfMemoryException» errors that are listed in the IBM Technotes.

  • For example «System.OutOfMemoryException: Out of memory» when exporting structures

Alternatively, the end users may find that they receive a strange ‘red cross’ background to Controller from time to time.

There are several possible causes for «Out Of Memory» errors.

This IBM Technote specifically relates to the scenario where the cause is a known limitation in Controller 10. 1.1 (and earlier) where the Controller client software (CCR.EXE) is not LAA-aware.

  • Therefore it has detected that there is more than 2Gb RAM to use (and is attempting to use it) but it is hitting the default 2Gb limit for 32-bit programs.

More Information
Large Address Aware (LAA) is a technique available in 64-bit Windows operating systems to allow 32-bit programs use all 4Gb (typically 2Gb user + 2Gb system space) of its potential memory space, rather than be limited by the default (typically 2Gb, but sometimes 3Gb if using special techniques).

At the time of writing, all current versions of the Controller client do *not* have Large Address Aware (LAA) enabled.

  • In other words, the CCR.EXE does not have the LAA flag enabled (shown below inside CFF Explorer)

This means that they cannot take advantage of Microsoft 4GT, and therefore they are restricted to using 2Gb RAM.

  • NOTE: By converting the Controller client to use 4Gb RAM it will not 100% eradicate ‘Out Of Memory’ issues, but it should make them occur vastly less frequently.

Controller 10.1.1 (or earlier) client running on:

  • 64-bit version of Windows (e.g. Windows 7 64-bit or Windows 2008 R2)
  • with more than 2Gb (for example 3Gb or 4Gb) RAM installed.

For example, it is most likely to be seen on Citrix / Terminal Servers based on 64-bit operating systems (e.g. Windows 2008 R2) since these are much more likely to have very large amounts of RAM installed.

Fix:

Upgrade to Controller 10.2 or later.

Workaround:

Modify the Controller client executable (CCR.EXE) to use LAA («Large Address Aware»).

Steps:

PART ONE — Locate the CCR.EXE that the client(s) are configured to use.

  • Historically, many customers have chosen to deploy the Controller ‘web client’
    • This means that the executables are downloaded from the website
      • In other words, the location of the CCR. EXE file would typically be here: http://servername/ibmcognos/controllerbin/ccr.exe
      • Therefore the CCR.EXE is located on the Controller application/webserver, in a folder similar to: C:\Program Files (x86)\cognos\c10\webcontent\ccr\ccr.exe
    • In this scenario, naturally only one CCR.EXE file (located on the webserver) has to be modified.
  • However, many customers now choose to deploy/install the ‘local’ Controller client, by installing CCRLocalClient.MSI
    • This means that the executable is stored locally on the client device’s hard drive
      • By default, the location is here: C:\Program Files (x86)\ibm\IBM Cognos Controller\ccr.exe
    • In this scenario, the CCR.EXE file has to be modified multiple times (once for each end user’s client PC).

PART TWO — Modify the CCR.EXE

There are several potential methods to modify the CCR. EXE file.

  • IMPORTANT: The two methods shown below use THIRD-PARTY (non-IBM) software to modify the application
  • IBM offer no Warranty using third-party (non-IBM) tools, so customers use these third-party tools at their own risk.
  • The information below is given in good faith as a ‘best endeavour’ to provide helpful information. The third-party tools are not officially recommended by (or affiliated to) IBM

Method (1) Use third-party utility «CFF Explorer» to tick (enable) the setting «App can handle >2gb address space«

Method (2) Use third-party (non-IBM) tool «4gb_patch.exe» (written by the same person as «CFF Explorer») to modify CCR.EXE in the same way.

Restaurant of high Russian cuisine from Arkady Novikov. The space opened in 2009 and immediately became a city landmark of sorts. Requires location. Being in the center of the cultural and fashionable life of the capital, opposite the Bolshoi Theater and the Central Department Store, the Bolshoy restaurant attracted creative intelligentsia and representatives of the political and business elite to its halls. The place is also popular with tourists.

The «Big» has two impeccably elegant rooms furnished with Ralph Lauren furniture. The pride of the restaurant is a collection of works by contemporary artists and sculptors, which enlivens the interior. The main hall is decorated nobly, in ivory tones, as if it was created for dinner parties and celebrations. The Small Hall is more intimate and austere. Business meetings or leisurely dinners are often arranged here, sitting on leather furniture surrounded by mahogany walls.

The Bolshoi restaurant’s cuisine corresponds to the concept of high gastronomy. The emphasis was made on Russian specialties with French chic. You can order thin pancakes with black caviar and sour cream or try the Traditionally Cooked Beef Stroganoff. The menu includes exquisite combinations for simple products, for example, cabbage rolls are made from Savoy cabbage stuffed with rabbit meat.

The list of dishes based on the restaurant’s signature recipes was placed under the heading «Bolshoi Specialties». The menu also included a section with meat items «From the Josper Oven» and local «Burgers». In addition, they added interesting vegetarian dishes like vegetable cutlets or eggplant carpaccio.

A long breakfast menu is available on weekday mornings. The Bolshoi restaurant hosts 5 o’clock tea parties daily with desserts for a fixed price.

    I am a permanent visitor to the restaurant «Large». Today, 12/20/2021, I encountered the rudeness of a cloakroom attendant, who rudely told me that I was chasing him for my outerwear. He said that I could go out into the street wrapped in a blanket and that it was not his job to give me clothes several times. I would definitely go forward and not bother your cloakroom attendant to give me outerwear, but it’s -11 on the street and, alas, I would freeze in a blanket. It’s sad that your cloakroom attendant overshadowed a visit to my favorite restaurant. I strongly recommend that you have a conversation with the employee and avoid such situations in the future.

    Why do we go to a restaurant? For a busy person, the answer is not too obvious: this is the place where meetings with colleagues, partners, and friends take place. Definitely not for the sake of meeting with the waiters (especially in this particular place), no matter how surprising it sounds to them. However, no matter how much we create or destroy during the meeting, in the end or at the beginning we will have to eat. And this is where the problems begin. I had to visit the Bolshoi twice. The first time everything went pretty smoothly, however, I have to thank the Spanish farmers for this, because at the corporate buffet I limited myself to Iberico jamon and water. On my next trip to gastronomy, I suffered a crushing defeat from which I cannot recover. No matter how pathetically the restaurateurs substitute the essence, the basis of the Russian dinner is and remains soup. Simple soup. And this is a real tragedy in the Bolshoi (with a capital D). Our company ordered two varieties of soup — hodgepodge and borscht. They were so bad that there is no desire to describe them, but to describe the indigestion that happened to people who ate both hodgepodge and borscht (not together and not mixing) — there is a desire, but, alas, it’s not worth it 🙂 Although it is worth noting that The borscht was also served badly: pouring it onto a plate, the waiter soiled its margins, but did not wipe them with a napkin.
