NEC Personal Computers Unveils New LAVIE Pro Mobile at CES 2021

January 7, 2021- NEC Personal Computers Ltd. (NECPC), a joint venture company of Lenovo and NEC Corporation, today announced the launch of the upgraded “LAVIE Pro Mobile” at All-Digital CES 2021.
Having garnered recognition for its light weight and durability at last year’s CES, the new LAVIE Pro Mobile returns with even more tempting features for on-the-go professionals, including a long-lasting battery life and more comfortable typing experience to boost productivity.
This PC comes outfitted with an 11th Gen IntelⓇ Core i7 CPU and a keyboard design exclusively available to customers outside of Japan, while retaining the same compact 13.3-inch-wide screen and 889 grams (1.95lbs) weight. An optimized lift-up hinge function also tilts the keyboard to fit personal preference for the typing experience with 19mm key pitch.
At the event, NECPC also presented a sneak preview of the “LAVIE MINI”, an 8-inch convertible PC prototype built for fun and premium entertainment with cool gaming accessories.
The LAVIE MINI pocket-sized PC is one of the smallest form-factors featuring the power and performance of the 11th Gen IntelⓇ Core™ i7 mobile processor with Intel IrisⓇ Xe graphics. To personalize their experience, users can simply attach a gaming controller and a non-portable gaming console connected to an external monitor for home use. The prototype was showcased at the world’s largest consumer technology event to collect customer feedback and assess plans to launch in the future.

Stylish Durability on the Go: The New LAVIE Pro Mobile
The new 13-inch NECPC LAVIE Pro Mobile laptop in Navy Blue. The New LAVIE Pro Mobile is a portable PC that packs a punch.
With lightweight components housed in a rich Navy-Blue hued compact body, the device boasts a 13.3-inch-wide screen while weighing only 889 grams (1.95lbs).
Despite its compact build, it offers USB Type-C connectivity for productivity at home/office.
The PC also includes other features making it ideal for flexible working. With a durable top and bottom carbon casing and a long-lasting battery run-time of up to 10 hours*, users can work from nearly anywhere, whether at home or back in the office.

Impossibly Portable for More Freedom: LAVIE MINI
Place the LAVIE MINI into its optional dock and connect to a TV for a life-size gaming experience The LAVIE MINI is every PC gamer’s dream. The 8-inch WUXGA monitor ultra-mobile PC is 14.7 cm long and weighs 579 grams (1.28lbs).
Powered by an 11th Gen Intel® Core i7 CPU, it includes a small backlit keyboard with unique round keys and comes in Crystal White, giving it an airy translucent look.
With a 360 rotational hinge and optical touch sensor, the device can be used in tablet mode or turned into a portable gaming PC by docking with a dedicated gamepad controller.
It can also be configured into a non-portable gaming console using the docking station and sharing screen with a home TV or any other device (HDMI input) in 4K quality, as well as other input/output extensions including several USB Type-C and -A ports.
Pricing and availability of the LAVIE MINI ultra-portable convertible prototype is not available currently.

NEC LAVIE Pro Mobile: Incredibly Light 1.8 Lbs 13.3-inch Laptop
The NEC LAVIE series of ultralight laptops dated back at least from 2010 and evolved with the technology of the day, including an Ultrabook version, but 2015 was a particular year because NEC started to partner with Lenovo to commercialize the LaVie Z13, and again today with the 1.85 Lbs 13.3-inch NEC LAVIE Pro Mobile.
The series has remained faithful to its original Ultralight Laptop mission, and at 1.85 Lbs (837g), it can boast of bringing one of the lightest, if not the lightest, 13.
3” clamshell computer with a Core i7-8565 processor.
If you haven’t held one of these before, be warned: at first, it does feel like the computer is an empty shell, like a dummy computer used for iterating design revisions. When you realize that it is a full-blown PC, it’s just mind-boggling.
For comparison, the LG Gram 13.3 laptop weighs 2.13 Lbs and the newly announced Dell XPS 13 weighs 2.8 Lbs. The LAVIE Pro Mobile is just a little bit heavier than the Surface Pro 7 without the keyboard (1.7Lbs).
Despite the being lightweight and 15.5mm thin, this laptop manages to feature two USB-C 3.1, and one full-size USB-A 3.1 Gen 2 ports. That’s not all: there’s also an HDMI 1.4b video connector along with a MicroSD slot and of course, a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Yamaha dual 2-Watts speakers look pretty good on paper, and we’re now curious to see how good they actually are, but a tradeshow is definitely not the right place for sound quality testing, so check back with us, or subscribe to one of our channels.
There’s only one display option: 1080p 13.3” IPS LCD, 300 NITs, anti-glare. In our experience, these displays should cover at least 72% of the sRGB color gamut, which is good for productivity tasks, but if you’re lucky, NEC/Lenovo may have used a 99% sRGB coverage display that is better for creative tasks. We’ll speculate that being lightweight was the priority here.
The only processor option listed is the Intel Core i7-8665U (8th Gen) which is very decent, but the latest PCs have 10th-Gen processors that have much faster graphics, so if you do anything that could be significantly accelerated by the GPU, it could be a reason do a bit more research. Otherwise, the CPU performance alone is not that different for the same number of CPU cores.
There’s 8GB of RAM (16GB would have been marvelous) and 512 GB of SSD storage (M.2 2280 PCIe), which should be enough for office workers.
The 49Wh battery capacity is very similar to other “thin and light” 13.
3” laptop, but given the weight of this one, we’re not sure how NEC managed to pull this feat, and the Wh / Lbs ratio could be the best on the market.
Perhaps the most refreshing aspect of the NEC LAVIE Pro Mobile is its Bordeaux color (pronounced “bordo”) that makes the Magnesium-Lithium (wait, Lithium!?) chassis look classy and different. At $1599.99, it is a high-end ultralight and should hit the shelves in March 2020.

LaVie Mini is not one of those laptops with special design and just features to enjoy emulators, it is a prototype created by Lenovo and NEC that hides inside the entire portable gaming PC. Yes, one that you can play Triple A games with wherever you are.
Gaming PC that can be used as a portable console
Similar offerings from Lenovo and NEC are admittedly not common, but it must also be emphasized that this is not the first time we have seen something like this.
At CES last year, Alienware already showed something similar with its Alienware Concept UFO, though this time it’s changed that idea of building a gaming PC that you can take anywhere with the and use as if it were a portable console in question.
LaVie Mini was was born as a prototype and is the result of a collaboration between Lenovo and NEC. Both companies have created a gaming PC that’s special not because of the power that its hardware hides, but because it’s a device that you can use almost as you please. Because you can dock it, use it as a laptop, or place two controllers to make a Nintendo Switch-type console.
The versatility of the design is what really draws attention to the device, which may not go beyond the prototype, but can serve as the basis for future commands that will appear later. Though if it goes to market as is, that would be a good idea or something crazy. nine0007
We are sure that for some users this would already be something almost ideal, because to all these uses is added the use of a rather interesting technical sheet.
Because according to data provided by Lenovo, this computer will use to run from 8-inch touch panel with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. Although the most interesting would come from the processor.
Taking advantage of the technical capabilities of 11th generation Intel 9 processors0010 , the team is integrating Intel Core i7 with next generation Intel Xe graphics. Added to this is up to 16 GB of RAM and an SSD drive.
Okay, this won’t be a high-end gaming PC; but the truth is, given the behavior the new Intel GPUs can offer, it seems more than enough to play at 1080p quality. And besides, being able to do it in a similar way to a handheld console is an important advantage over other types of gaming PCs and even consoles like the Nintendo Switch. nine0007
LaVie Mini, a very flashy concept
Without a doubt, Lenovo’s prototype is impressive, and if the idea was to grab the attention of any user interested in gaming PCs, we think they succeeded.
Of course, as we have already said, this may be just a prototype, and hopefully in a few years we will not know more. Something similar to what happened with Alienware, but now it’s impossible to imagine a little bit of everything that the PC market can bring with this type of offering. And be careful if they switch to ARM architecture instead of Intel processors, as Apple did with their Apple Silicon Mac. Something quite doable from the hands of Qualcomm. nine0007
So we will not rule out that we will regularly see such devices in the near future. Because if you can later dock it and work with your laptop like you do now, what else do you need?
