It seems that the further down the chain of PC components, the more companies there are to produce the hardware.  For desktop PCs we have two main CPU manufacturers, three main GPU manufacturers (including Intel), half-dozen mainstream motherboard manufacturers, about the same memory manufacturers (many smaller ones), a dozen storage manufacturers and a couple dozen main chassis manufacturers (with even more getting involved in CPU cooling).  To this extent, more competition requires more innovation and brand recognition to differentiate the company: over the past several years, we have seen Lian Li come out with a variety of unique case designs, and the PC-A51 today is a little more conservative in that respect.

The PC-A51 is a 44 litre ATX mid-tower design suitable for CPU coolers up to 175mm (6.8”), 160mm (6.2”) PSUs and 400mm (15.7”) GPUs.  The brushed aluminium commonly associated with Lian Li is here, with a side window on the PC-A51WX and PC-A51WRX models.  The chassis comes in at 4.9 kg, measuring 230mm*393mm*489mm (WxHxD), with space for five storage drives (2.5” or 3.5”) in the main section and two 2.5” drives in the cable management area.

The thermal design is based around a reverse airflow system – air comes in through the rear 120mm fan, passes through the CPU cooler (make sure it is mounted the right way, this should also give the bigger temperature delta between hot/cold), and through the storage drives out the front panel ventilation holes.  The system also has liquid cooling grommets and space for a 240mm/280mm radiator on the top.

This layout is a little odd, as the intake of air comes above the outtake of the GPU airflow, suggesting that warm GPU air will come in at the CPU level, re-entering the case.

The chassis is also designed for a front mounted PSU, with an internal cable being routed through the 30mm of cable management space behind the motherboard.  Two of the storage bays have to be removed for an initial GPU longer than 280mm, and GPUs beyond the first have a 280mm limitation depending on the PSU.

The chassis is a tool-less design, with the front panel featuring four USB 3.0 ports, audio jacks and space for one 5.25” drive.  As seen in the images, these four USB 3.0 ports use two cables rather than a hub, meaning that in order to get full use of these ports, the user needs a motherboard with at least two USB 3.0 headers.  This combination is commonly found on the more expensive Intel 8-series motherboards that advertise 10 USB 3.0 ports or more.

The PC-A51A (silver, no window) and PC-A51B (black, no window) will be available in North America from the end of February at an MSRP of $149.  The PCA51WX (black, window) will be released at the same time for $189, and the PC-A51WRC (red and black, window) will be available in April at $199.

Lian Li Releases the PC-A51 Aluminum Mid-Tower PC Case

By Nathan Kirsch •

14 February 2014, Keelung, Taiwan – Lian-Li Industrial Co. Ltd, today announces a new brushed aluminum mid-tower chassis with a reverse airflow design PC-A51. Previewed to the worldwide DIY community in its prototype stage, the PC-A51 is a conglomeration of user feedback and Lian Li’s time-honed expertise and engineering capabilities.

Reverse Airflow Design

This community collaborated chassis sports a reverse airflow design in which cool air is pulled into the chassis from the rear filtered 120mm fan. The front 140mm fan above the front-mounted PSU pulls hardware-damaging hot air out of the case.

An additional 120mm or 140mm fan can be mounted on the floor of the chassis.

Versatile HDD/SSD Mounting System

Debuting on the PC-A51 is Lian Li’s new versatile HDD/SSD mounting system. This new system allows DIY builders to mount either a 3.5 or 2.5 drive on the five individually removable hard drive bays. For more versatility, if the bays are removed, up to three 2.5 drives can be mounted directly onto the tray freeing up space and helping to increase airflow. Behind the motherboard tray an additional 2.5 can be mounted.

Compact Size / Full Hardware Compatibility

At 44L, the PC-A51 is a compact mid-tower that makes use of all available space. CPU coolers up to 175mm (6.8) in height and power supplies up to 160mm (6.2) are supported. VGA cards up to 400mm (15.7) comfortably fit inside the PC-A51.

Water Cooling Support

A tool-lessly removable top panel allows for 240/280mm radiators and AIO liquid cooling kits to be easily installed.

Convenient Connectivity

The I/O panel containing four USB 3.0 ports and HD audio connections is located on the front bezel for convenient connectivity. A stealth bay for the 5.25 drive keeps the front bezel uniform.

Price and Availability

The PC-A51 will be available in North America in four variations:

  • PC-A51A (silver) / PC-A51B (black) USD149
  • PC-A51WX (internal black w/ window) USD189
  • PC-A51WRX (red and black w/ window) USD199

In early December last year, Lian Li Industrial Co. invited the Internet community to participate in the creation of the PC-A51 Mid Tower computer case by posting images of a prototype of a future product on the Web in order to collect opinions and wishes regarding its design. And now the developers have officially announced the release of this novelty, designed taking into account the collected feedback.

Made entirely of aluminum and available in two colors with or without a transparent side window. It is designed to install an ATX, Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX motherboard, graphics adapters up to 400 mm long, a CPU cooler up to 175 mm high, and a power supply unit up to 160 mm long (the latter is located at the bottom in front of the interior). Also in the arsenal there are seven expansion slots and one 5.25-inch external bay.

Notably, the new product uses a new internal HDD or SSD mounting system, which consists of five separate removable trays for 3.5- or 2.5-inch drives. In addition, there is one additional slot for a 2.5-inch drive behind the motherboard tray.

Two fans are initially included in the package, namely 120 mm at the rear and 140 mm at the front. It should be noted that the air flow created by them is directed in the opposite direction, that is, from the rear «propeller» to the front. To increase the efficiency of excess heat removal, the user can independently add another 120- or 140-mm fan from below. In addition, it is possible to use a water cooling system based on a 240- or 280-mm radiator (there are special holes on the rear wall for the outlet of hoses, and the top cover can be easily removed to ensure the convenience of installing a dropsy).

As for the set of interfaces located on the facade, there was room for four USB 3.0 ports, as well as headphone and microphone jacks.

In the US, the start of sales of the product described above is scheduled for the end of this month at a price of $150 to $200 (depending on design features and colors).

The Lian-Li PC-A51 case uses a non-standard cooling scheme: the blower fan is located at the back, and the blower fan is at the front.

The Lian-Li PC-A51 case uses a non-standard cooling scheme: it has a blower fan at the back, and an exhaust fan at the front. A similar system has already been used, for example, in the PC-A05N model.

Power supply located at the front. Being aluminum, the novelty accommodates ATX and micro-ATX motherboards. There are seven expansion slots, five places for 3.5/2.5-inch drives.

The recommended length of the video card is 280 mm (if you remove one of the slots for hard drives, any accelerator will fit), the PSU length is 160 mm, the height of the CPU cooler is 175 mm. In addition, a 240mm or 280mm CBO radiator will fit. As much as 30 mm is allocated for cable management — a rare generosity for this class of cases.

A 120mm fan at the rear and a 140mm fan at the front are responsible for cooling, and they can be supplemented with two more 140/120mm Carlsons.

Solid sidewall version $149, with a transparent window — $189.
