I have a Linksys WMP54G v 4.1 Wireless PCI card from an old computer I would like to use it for something but I have a problem.

The end that the antenna attaches to is broken (See picture). I was wondering if I could somehow attach a new end to it? I have a connector I think is called an N connector, I know it better as RP-TNC. The card had an RP-SMA connnector. Is it possible to solder the connector to the broken one? (See Pictures).

Yes — that will probably work OK (there may be some inovious gitch but should be no technical problem. ).

Very importantly though — you want good mechanical support for the nw larger connector. A non conductove brack (eg plastic) that supports the connector and is screwed to the PCB in a neutral location is advisable. Or Heath Robinson solution is to pot the connector and PCB with eg epoxy resin ;-(.

Ensure shortest possible connections between old and new centres connecyor and good ground to ground connections.

Note that the new connector does not have to point in the same direction as the old one.

  • Mounting it at 90 degrees on a sheet of plastic that extends from the PCB may be extremely effective.

Even if it is at an angle it can work OK. Shortness of connection length is more important than prettiness.

There are several physical ways to connect.

(1) Either connect middle to middle and brass cube to body. This should be very easy to trial with the new connector at an angle so that relevant parts touch. Not pretty but should work OK for trialing.
or

(2) Remove brass cube and connect inner to inner, outer to where body connected
or

(3) Connect from bottom of PCB with old brass block still in place.

Any of these schemes may produce an impedance step and cause reflections and some loss of signal. But all may work OK — there’s a degree of luck involved.

Wireless Adapter Cards and Wireless Network Adapters

PCI is a Peripheral Component Interconnect, an industry standard for connecting devices to a computer’s CPU. PCI works by establishing a common interconnect called a bus that all connected devices use to communicate. PCI is the most common interconnect used in desktop personal computers and remains common with wireless network adapters.

01 of 04

Desktop PCI Adapter

The PCI Wireless Adapter card connects to the desktop PCI bus. Because the PCI bus is contained inside the computer, the device must be open and the wireless network adapter installed inside.

An example of a PCI wireless adapter card, Linksys WMP54G, is shown above. This block is over 8 inches (200mm) long to accommodate the standard bonding strip required for electrical connection to the busbar. The device plugs in and fits snugly into the PCI, although the wireless adapter card’s antenna protrudes from the back of the computer.

Wireless PC Adapter for Notebooks

PC Card Adapter connects to your laptop network. A PC card is a device that conforms to the width and height of a credit card that is compatible with the PCMCIA hardware interface standard. The

Linksys WPC54G shown above is a typical laptop PC network adapter. This adapter contains a very small built-in Wi-Fi antenna for wireless connectivity. It also has built-in LED indicators to show the status of the device.

PC Cards are inserted into the slot on the side of the notebook. Wireless adapters, such as those shown, typically issue a small amount on the computer side; This design allows Wi-Fi antennas to transmit without interference. In contrast, wired Ethernet to Ethernet card adapters are fully inserted into the computer.

Given the small space they fit into, PC Card adapters get very warm during normal operation. This temperature is not a major issue as the adapters are designed to keep heat out. However, laptops provide an eject mechanism to remove PC Card adapters when not in use to protect them and possibly prolong their lifespan.

Linksys WUSB54G USB Wireless Network Adapter shown above is a typical WiFi USB Wireless Network Adapter. These adapters connect to a standard USB port available on the rear panel. most desktop computers. In general, USB network adapters are not much larger than PC Card adapters. Two LED indicators on the adapter indicate its power and network line status.

Installing the wireless USB adapter is easy. A short USB cable (usually included) connects to the computer adapter. These adapters do not require a separate power cord as the same USB cable also draws power from the host computer. The wireless antenna and USB adapter circuitry always remain external to the computer. On some devices, you can adjust the antenna manually to improve Wi-Fi reception. The accompanying device driver software performs the equivalent function as in other types of network adapters.

Some manufacturers sell two types of USB wireless adapters, a «basic» model and a «compact» model designed for travelers. Their small size and easy setup make these adapters an attractive choice for those looking to simplify their network setup.

Wireless Ethernet Bridge

Wireless Ethernet Bridge converts a wired Ethernet device for use in a wireless computer network. Wireless Ethernet bridge and USB adapters are sometimes referred to as wireless media adapters because they allow Wi-Fi devices to use physical or physical Ethernet or USB media. Wireless Ethernet bridges support game consoles, DVRs, and other Ethernet-based consumer devices, as well as regular computers.

The Linksys WET54G Wireless Ethernet Bridge is shown above. It’s little more than a Linksys Wireless USB Adapter.

True network bridge devices such as WET54G do not need to install device driver software to operate, simplifying installation. Instead, network settings for the WET54G can be made through a browser-based administrative interface.

Like USB adapters, Ethernet Ethernet bridges can draw their power from the main cable connected to the host device. However, Ethernet bridges require a dedicated Power over Ethernet converter to do the job, while this feature is automatic with USB. Without the PoE add-on, wireless Ethernet bridges require a separate power cord.

Wirelss Ethernet bridges typically have LED indicators. For example, the WET54G displays power, Ethernet and Wi-Fi status indicators.

  • the main stationary computer moved to another room, the question arose of buying a wi-fi adapter. I took this model. Everything was installed easily, I found the network right away. Worked great for the first few months.
But in the last couple of weeks:
    — first began to disconnect from the network. But the wi-fi signal remained. Running the utility and entering the password again, the Internet appeared. This, of course, did not please.
    — then stopped connecting to the network altogether, although there was a wi-fi signal. This went on for probably a week. Tried to reinstall the drivers, the utility — did not help. Only downloading the utility from the site helped (how it differs from the one on the disk). After that it worked.
True, breaks still happen, but less often.
Updated 10/30/12: Removed the utility, leaving one driver for the card — and everything works!
Updated 12/11/12. Communication breaks remained. I cured it by disconnecting it, buying and pulling a regular Internet cable))

    Advantages:
    — Good network
    — Easy installation

    Disadvantages:
    — Periodically began not to connect to the network

    Period of use: several months

Stands in a torrent-rocking chair, fulfills every ruble invested with a bang. Before that, I worked with DIR 615 (a terrible router), my impressions were so-so, after replacing it with zyxel keenetic giga, my file downloader changed beyond recognition, up to fixing the exchange rate with zyxel keenetic giga at 270 mb / s. (of course, the provider does not distribute so much 🙂 ), worked for three days without freezes, breaks and other delights, pulled the series in HD quality.
In general, feel free to take TP-Link 851, you won’t lose. On my advice, a colleague at work took the same adapter, he is completely satisfied (he was lucky with Dir615, it does not fall off).
Someone there spontaneously turns off, adjust the power modes, turn off «turn off the hard drive when idle» and you will be happy.

    Pros:
    Low profile
    Good speed (154-270mb/s)
    Stable operation

    Cons:
    Not found.

I suffered with this device for a very long time, in the end I won, but still I was not satisfied. Many people write that the driver from the disk in the kit is not suitable, it turned out the opposite for me: it is installed from the disk and works from the site. I assume that there are some differences in the versions, which the manufacturer did not mention a word about. The disk was lost, of course (who keeps them in the 21st century?) As a result, I had to tear off the cover and look for a driver by chip manufacturer. Atheros AR9 chip227. On the Czech site, atheros eventually found a driver. After long dances with a tambourine, I made 2 conclusions for myself:
    1) I will never take TP-link again.
    2) I will no longer take and do not recommend built-in Wi-Fi adapters to anyone. Due to the poor location of the PC (for example, in the corner), the Wi-Fi speed can drop tenfold. And if an external usb adapter can be simply transferred using a USB extension cable, then to transfer the antenna from such an adapter you will need a feeder (antenna cable), and feeders are not a consumer demand and cost the entire adapter as a whole (or even more)

    Advantages:
    Price
    Good chip

    Disadvantages:
Reception is worse than analogues. (speed is lower, compared with ASUS N10)
No software support from the manufacturer (shameful)
Requires hands and brain to set up drivers and place antennas.

The first month after the purchase everything was fine. But after a couple of months it started… When heated from the video card, the ping began to increase and the sites either opened for a long time or did not open at all, this was rare. But after a month after identifying such problems, this case became more frequent and now the Internet began to disappear periodically, there is a Wi-Fi connection, but it says that the Internet is not available (Win 7 x64 Maximum). I won’t sin on the router, because at the moment of freezing the laptop works fine. This model has a weak signal, the router is standing through the wall and shows a signal of 4 divisions out of 5, but in the same place the laptop shows all the divisions. Now I’m thinking of what to replace, 300 Mbit / s is needed, since the router also supports it, and I would like to read from external file storage at maximum speed)

    Advantages:
Easy to install, wound up with a half turn.

    Disadvantages:
    — When heated, it starts to «dull».
    — Cuts speed.
    -Weak power

The first month everything was fine, then the problems described in the shortcomings began. I took TP-Link TL-WN821NC as a replacement — so far I’m satisfied.

    Advantages:
    Quick installation

    Disadvantages:
Works only through the utility, often crashes from the network and does not connect automatically, you have to re-enter the home network password every time.
began to slow down a lot after a month of use.

If you (i.e. a potential buyer) use windows xp and (or) 7, and do not want to change anything, then this card will suit you.
If you want to work on windows 8, then don’t be surprised by the fact that the computer will freeze.

    Advantages:
When there was windows xp or 7, there were only positive feelings from it. the Internet did not fall off, did not interfere.

    Disadvantages:
but when I installed windows 8, it started…
at startup the computer freezes tightly. I can’t say about any use of the Internet, because. failed to use.

More than a year ago I decided to transfer all home PCs, of which 3 to the wafer. I installed this adapter on my PC. Well, I’m very satisfied, because the price tag for it is small, and in combination with a router from the same company, model 842ND, I get speeds in torrents up to 9 meters per second. True, there was an unpleasant incident recently — a DLL was damaged and often, under network loads, a blue screen appeared swearing at the waffle. But I cured everything. I advise, excellent Wi-Fi adapter!

    Advantages:
Nimble, small size, stable and reliable.

    Faults:
    Did not reveal.

Works disgusting even when paired with a top router. Even for free, such an adapter is not needed.

    Advantages:

    Disadvantages:
Extremely unstable operation. Every 10 minutes the speed drops to zero, or the network falls off. Inconvenient fastening. Very low speed and huge ping.

Bought, installed, downloaded drivers, utilities, instructions via cable, as it is deprived of a disk drive. I started to install drivers, writes — it cannot be installed on this platform. I was upset, I was already thinking of running back to return. But I noticed that wireless networks appeared in the list of networks. Was unspeakably happy.

    Advantages:
Connected immediately, went into work without any complaints. No driver installation required, win 8.1

    Disadvantages:
Not yet, but this is only the first hour of use

Period of use: less than a month

Good working device. I only had to break my head due to driver glitches. 🙂 Before that, I suffered with the extremely unstable work of «whistle» type adapters that were inserted into USB. Now I installed it as a separate board and forgot about the instability.

    Advantages:
Works stably through the wall and cabinet. There are no problems. Speed is ok.

    Disadvantages:
Glitchy native drivers for XP, even the latest ones, which TP-Link only has in 2010. My antivirus program did not want to contact one of the servers to update the databases, although the server was pinging. I installed drivers from the Atheros AR9227 chipset manufacturer (released in 2013) and the glitches immediately disappeared.

    Advantages:
    Small ping delays. Stable work.

    Disadvantages:

Managed to set up an access point on Ubuntu 16. 04 server x64 in 802.11n mode. MIMO failed to start. this mode was not supported by the out-of-the-box driver. Drivers and software only from official Ubuntu repositories.

    Advantages:
Availability of drivers and stable operation under Linux.

    Weaknesses:
The description is misleading, indicating a maximum speed of 300Mbit/s. MIMO is not a twofold increase in the speed of 802.11n, but two channels of 150Mbit / s.
