I have a Linksys WMP54G v 4.1 Wireless PCI card from an old computer I would like to use it for something but I have a problem.

The end that the antenna attaches to is broken (See picture). I was wondering if I could somehow attach a new end to it? I have a connector I think is called an N connector, I know it better as RP-TNC. The card had an RP-SMA connnector. Is it possible to solder the connector to the broken one? (See Pictures).

Yes — that will probably work OK (there may be some inovious gitch but should be no technical problem. ).

Very importantly though — you want good mechanical support for the nw larger connector. A non conductove brack (eg plastic) that supports the connector and is screwed to the PCB in a neutral location is advisable. Or Heath Robinson solution is to pot the connector and PCB with eg epoxy resin ;-(.

Ensure shortest possible connections between old and new centres connecyor and good ground to ground connections.

Note that the new connector does not have to point in the same direction as the old one.

Mounting it at 90 degrees on a sheet of plastic that extends from the PCB may be extremely effective.

Even if it is at an angle it can work OK. Shortness of connection length is more important than prettiness.

There are several physical ways to connect.

(1) Either connect middle to middle and brass cube to body. This should be very easy to trial with the new connector at an angle so that relevant parts touch. Not pretty but should work OK for trialing.
or

(2) Remove brass cube and connect inner to inner, outer to where body connected
or

(3) Connect from bottom of PCB with old brass block still in place.

Any of these schemes may produce an impedance step and cause reflections and some loss of signal. But all may work OK — there’s a degree of luck involved.

PCI is a Peripheral Component Interconnect, an industry standard for connecting devices to a computer’s CPU. PCI works by establishing a common interconnect called a bus that all connected devices use to communicate. Desktop PCI Adapter

The PCI Wireless Adapter card connects to the desktop PCI bus. Because the PCI bus is contained inside the computer, the device must be open and the wireless network adapter installed inside.

An example of a PCI wireless adapter card, Linksys WMP54G, is shown above. This block is over 8 inches (200mm) long to accommodate the standard bonding strip required for electrical connection to the busbar. The device plugs in and fits snugly into the PCI, although the wireless adapter card’s antenna protrudes from the back of the computer.

Wireless PC Adapter for Notebooks

PC Card Adapter connects to your laptop network. A PC card is a device that conforms to the width and height of a credit card that is compatible with the PCMCIA hardware interface standard. The

Linksys WPC54G shown above is a typical laptop PC network adapter. This adapter contains a very small built-in Wi-Fi antenna for wireless connectivity. It also has built-in LED indicators to show the status of the device.

PC Cards are inserted into the slot on the side of the notebook. Wireless adapters, such as those shown, typically issue a small amount on the computer side; This design allows Wi-Fi antennas to transmit without interference. In contrast, wired Ethernet to Ethernet card adapters are fully inserted into the computer.

Linksys WUSB54G USB Wireless Network Adapter shown above is a typical WiFi USB Wireless Network Adapter. These adapters connect to a standard USB port available on the rear panel. most desktop computers. In general, USB network adapters are not much larger than PC Card adapters. Two LED indicators on the adapter indicate its power and network line status.

Installing the wireless USB adapter is easy. A short USB cable (usually included) connects to the computer adapter. These adapters do not require a separate power cord as the same USB cable also draws power from the host computer. Wireless Ethernet Bridge

Wireless Ethernet Bridge converts a wired Ethernet device for use in a wireless computer network. Wireless Ethernet bridge and USB adapters are sometimes referred to as wireless media adapters because they allow Wi-Fi devices to use physical or physical Ethernet or USB media. Wireless Ethernet bridges support game consoles, DVRs, and other Ethernet-based consumer devices, as well as regular computers.

the main stationary computer moved to another room, the question arose of buying a wi-fi adapter. I took this model. Everything was installed easily, I found the network right away. Worked great for the first few months.
But in the last couple of weeks:
— first began to disconnect from the network. But the wi-fi signal remained. Running the utility and entering the password again, the Internet appeared. This, of course, did not please.
— then stopped connecting to the network altogether, although there was a wi-fi signal. This went on for probably a week. Tried to reinstall the drivers, the utility — did not help. Only downloading the utility from the site helped (how it differs from the one on the disk). After that it worked.
True, breaks still happen, but less often.
Updated 10/30/12: Removed the utility, leaving one driver for the card — and everything works!
Updated 12/11/12. Communication breaks remained. I cured it by disconnecting it, buying and pulling a regular Internet cable))

Someone there spontaneously turns off, adjust the power modes, turn off «turn off the hard drive when idle» and you will be happy.

I suffered with this device for a very long time, in the end I won, but still I was not satisfied. Many people write that the driver from the disk in the kit is not suitable, it turned out the opposite for me: it is installed from the disk and works from the site. I assume that there are some differences in the versions, which the manufacturer did not mention a word about. The disk was lost, of course (who keeps them in the 21st century?) As a result, I had to tear off the cover and look for a driver by chip manufacturer. Atheros AR9 chip227. On the Czech site, atheros eventually found a driver. After long dances with a tambourine, I made 2 conclusions for myself:
1) I will never take TP-link again.
2) I will no longer take and do not recommend built-in Wi-Fi adapters to anyone. Due to the poor location of the PC (for example, in the corner), the Wi-Fi speed can drop tenfold. And if an external usb adapter can be simply transferred using a USB extension cable, then to transfer the antenna from such an adapter you will need a feeder (antenna cable), and feeders are not a consumer demand and cost the entire adapter as a whole (or even more)

Disadvantages:
Reception is worse than analogues. (speed is lower, compared with ASUS N10)
No software support from the manufacturer (shameful)
Requires hands and brain to set up drivers and place antennas.

The first month after the purchase everything was fine. Managed to set up an access point on Ubuntu 16. 04 server x64 in 802.11n mode. MIMO failed to start. this mode was not supported by the out-of-the-box driver. Drivers and software only from official Ubuntu repositories.

Advantages:
Availability of drivers and stable operation under Linux.

Weaknesses:
The description is misleading, indicating a maximum speed of 300Mbit/s. MIMO is not a twofold increase in the speed of 802.11n, but two channels of 150Mbit / s.
