I need to fix an RRODed 360, I realize that there are several guides floating around out there.
What worked good for you? I need to find a good guide and a parts list so that I can fix this one I have.

Im curious as well. You can get RROD’d systems for next to nothing if you’re brave enough to buy an AS-IS off ebay. I read the issue mostly deals with overheating and that replacing the heatsink and reapplying better thermal compound can fix it. However I wonder how far you can repair something like that. I mean wouldnt that damage the PCB or something beyond repair if overheating was the case?

A. It’s over three years old
B. I hacked it before I ever turned it on.
C. Good advice if a and b weren’t true.
It seems to work great for some people.

The problem here is that there’s at least a half-dozen different, distinct problems that can cause an RROD, and not all of them are related to the heat issues. If it’s just the heat issue, the repair is fairly easy, but if you screw it up, you can DOA the system.
Here’s one guide on it (and I don’t know whether it’s a good guide or not, sorry):

I just used this on my original HALO Green 360 and it worked perfectly. I took the chance that it was a heat related issue since it happened so quickly. Either way the instructions were very clear and easy to follow and it worked great. Now I have two Xbox 360 since I was so pissed that it broke that I went out that night and bought one of the new ones, nice to have an extra for the bedroom.

I had an original 360 that on it’s first RROD was replaced. A year after the blanket warranty RROD replacement the refurbished I got back got it. I nursed it along using the RROD kit from llama and the guide they have there. I also did the mod where you clip the brown (I think) wire to the fans and give them a 12 volt source from a voltage regulator on the board. This increased the noise quite a bit since it does speed up significantly. Later I bought the GPU replacement heat sink since I had an original thin GPU heat sink, and I bought a new case for it so it’s a beautiful clear blue. Every once in a long while I still have to strip it down and perform one of the last steps in the llama RROD guide where you let just the GPU overheat by directing the fans to only cool the CPU. It is more reliable than removing the fan and letting it overtemp, which the guide does explain.
Side note: Over the time since the original, I later bought a resident evil edition just for the upgrade to HDMI, and I hate split screen so I bought my gf her own (she wasn’t impressed after having to do the overtemp once), and so now the blue original is about to go to a friend who won’t mind the occasional hiccup.

AAANDD at llama.com there is a RROD lookup table for the specific problem code, It could help to make sure it’s not failure the clamp fixes don’t touch.

but since i don’t have a recite or any proof of purchase,i doubt i will be legible for the Microsoft fix?

EDIT:Towel Trick did work,at least for now,I have no idea how long it will last, but as of now one of them is running cool….maybe i will get lucky and have no more problems.
im just going to let it sit overnight, and then stress test it tommorow.

I think you just call MS and they send you a box with shipping lables. I don’t think you need any receipt. Could be wrong, but that’s what I’ve heard about the RMA process.

If you are comfortable opening your case, (voiding your warrenty) then do what I did. Take everything off the xbox, (There are many guides, use google), take both heat sinks off, cover the plastic IO connector parts on the sides and use a heatgun.
This has lasted me 6 months on the first time, so I did it again, and it’s going strong. If you want a longer term thing, go and search X-Clamp replacement and find the parts to fix your clamps.
This works because when the board is sitting there, the x-clamps lose tension over time, so teh board warps to the back of the case. When it does this, it puts too much tension on the solders, breaking them. The heatgun reheats them, and fixes it.
Now i can play Call of Duty 4 without Cheaters (PC) or Mouse Snipers (PS3).
360 4 life!

For you.
Way to fix the RROD
New Thermal paste
Lap the heat sinks
New fans
http://secure.llamma.com/catalog/pro…roducts_id=715
Use this method in heatsink installion
http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair…-clamp_fix.htm
That spreate two fans for each cpu and gpu.
Than tape Cpu heatsink to the cpu.
And that add a cover to the gpu andalso tape to the duct.
Finally add memory heatsinks to memory.
There you go.What I did and now it runs at room temp.

Depends, I bought my 360 at Sams club and the disc drive kept getting stuck so I got all the original stuff (manuals, remotes, cables) and took it back and paid $50 more for the Elite.
They pretty much only care for the manual, remotes, cables, and the system itself if your return it to store.

DON’T TOWEL TRICK.
You will seriously screw up the rest of the logic and make the GPU balling worse than it is.
I can confirm the x-clamp, I’ve done 12 fixes with it now, all tanks that have not stopped running in 13 months now.
PM me for either arranging to do it, or hooking you up with the guide to do it yourself.

Llama says to not heat up to 2-flash failure, which is not accurate, it’s the best way to dirty reball (that sounds so bad). They also say to tighten the sink if it’s a no-go, which is way wrong. The «sweet spot» is a looser, bolted GPU sink that dumps heat quick. Just tightening it will just crack the die eventually. The 360 heat sink is flexible aluminum as well, so tightening just pulls the center of the sink away from the surface of the chip. FLAT is the key, not convex.

Leave bling and lights to Llama, their RROD guide is poor.
This guide by RBJTech is the king, and even then you have to massage a bit…

Rod Lama
adminlivt
Before starting a story about the heroes of our today’s material, it is worth noting that llamas and camels are relatives. The former differ from the inhabitants of the Old World only in that they lack a hump and are smaller in size. The genus of llamas is small and is represented by only three species of animals, each of which deserves great attention. Only one of them has not been domesticated by humans, and guanaco llamas continue to live in the wild.
An interesting feature of these animals is that all these species live only in South America. And now we would like to talk with you in more detail about each type of llama.
Considering the fact that Llamas belong to the camelid family, it is not difficult to guess that if someone offended an animal, it can spit at its offender with the help of chewed gum.
The first species is called Lama. These animals are not the largest. The length of their body can vary from one hundred and twenty to two hundred centimeters. The height at the withers can reach up to one hundred and twenty centimeters. With such dimensions, the animal does not weigh too much. The weight of an adult individual can reach from seventy-five to eighty kilograms. The head is small and located on a thin neck. The color of animals of this species can be the most diverse — from white to black-brown. The value of this species of the genus Lam is not too high, but still it is quite often used in the production process.
The main purpose for which Alpacas are bred is their wool. The Alpaca population has declined a bit lately. These animals are sheared only once every two years. For one such procedure, about one kilogram of wool can be obtained from one animal. Thanks to such characteristics as fineness and beauty, the wool of these animals is so famous all over the world. The wool is then sent for processing. Clothes, blankets and warm blankets are made from it. Alpacas are smaller than Lamas. They rarely reach a height of one meter. The weight indicator does not exceed seventy kilograms.
And now about the llamas that could not be domesticated. They live at an altitude of four thousand meters above sea level. The maximum speed that these animals can develop is fifty-six kilometers per hour. Guanacos must run fast in order to save their lives from natural enemies. Guanaco belongs to the herd animal. The average group size is twenty heads. There can be only one male in the harem, who will expel each male if the latter is already six months old or a year old. There are also male groups. Males can also live as hermits.
In order for a male to possess a female, he has to take part in a fight with another male. The gestation period of the female lasts for eleven months. As a result, only one baby is born. He will eat his mother’s milk for four months.
The average life span of a guanaco is twenty years. If raised in captivity, such an animal can live for about thirty years.

about Llama
Llamas (lat. Lama)
Llamas are American «relatives» of camels, differing from
relatives of the Old World by their smaller size and the absence of
humps. The genus of llamas includes 3 species, two of which were
domesticated several thousand years ago — these are llamas (lat. Lama glama) and
alpacas (lat. Lama pacos), and guanaco (lat. Lama guanicoe) is still
is a wild type. All types of llamas are found only in the territory of
South America.
Before the introduction of horses and sheep into South America, the llama was the only large domestic animal
used to carry heavy loads. A three-year-old male llama is able to carry a pack
weighing up to 50 kilograms (this is with its own weight of no more than 75
kilograms) and travel a distance of 25 kilometers with it in a day. In 90,022 mountainous areas at an altitude of over 2700 meters, lamas and now still widely
is used as pack transport.
This is not the largest representative of the genus Lam from the camelid family.
The body length of the animal varies from 120 to 200 centimeters, weight — 75-80
kilograms, and height at the withers — about 120 centimeters. On the thin neck of
is a small head with high pointed ears.
Lamas and camels have a lot in common, except for one thing — they do not have a hump. So
, like llama camels, in case of irritation, they spit at the offender
with chewed gum.
Llamas are world famous for their soft wool, although in its quality
it is still inferior to alpaca wool. The animal can be the most
of various colors — from almost white to black-brown.
2nd view — Alpaca (lat. Vicugna pacos)
Alpacas — another type of lamas. They were domesticated by the very first of two 90,022 species — about 6,000 years ago by the Indians of Peru.
They are bred in the mountainous regions of South America (Andes) solely for the sake of
their wool. Most alpacas live in Peru, although their range is
passes through Ecuador, southern Peru, northern Chile and
western Bolivia.
The current number of alpacas is about 3 million individuals.
They shear them once every 2 years, removing from each animal a little more than 1,
kilograms of fine fine wool, for which they are so famous.
is used to make warm and soft blankets, clothes and blankets.
Alpacas are slightly smaller than llamas. Their height does not exceed 1 meter, and their weight is not more than 70 kilograms, and their wool is longer (15-20 centimeters) and softer than that of
lam.
There are 2 types of alpacas, which differ from each other only in
the appearance of the coat — these are Suri (Suri) and Huacaya (Huacaya). In the former, it is
long and looks like pigtails, while in the latter it is softer. Their wool
is similar in properties to sheep, but much lighter. In addition, it is not
covered with sebum and things from it remain clean for a long time.
Like all representatives of the genus Lam,
alpacas are herbivores,
but they, unlike
llamas, lack front teeth,
therefore they are forced to
pinch the grass with their lips and use their lateral teeth
when chewing.
