The applications available for Mac users and the specific features included may be different from those available for PC users. With Microsoft 365, you can be flexible. With your account, you are not limited to exclusively Mac or exclusively PC, so you can transition across devices.

Yes. Documents that you have created belong fully to you. You can choose to store them online on OneDrive or locally on your PC or Mac.

Internet access is required to install and activate all the latest releases of apps and services included in all Microsoft 365 subscription plans. Note that if you are an existing subscriber, you do not need to reinstall or purchase another subscription.

For Microsoft 365 plans, Internet access is also needed to manage your subscription account, for example to install Office apps on other PCs or to change billing options. Internet access is also required to access documents stored on OneDrive, unless you install the OneDrive desktop app.

You should also connect to the Internet regularly to keep your version of Microsoft 365 up to date and to benefit from automatic upgrades. If you do not connect to the Internet at least every 31 days, your apps will go into reduced functionality mode, which means that you can view or print your documents but cannot edit the documents or create new ones. To reactivate your apps, simply reconnect to the Internet.

You do not need to be connected to the Internet to use the Office apps, such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, because the apps are fully installed on your computer.

Your Microsoft account is the combination of an email address and password that you use to sign in to services like OneDrive, Xbox LIVE, and Outlook.com. As part of signing up for a trial or purchasing Microsoft 365, you will be prompted to sign in with a Microsoft account. You must be signed in with this account to install and manage your Microsoft 365 subscription, or to use some subscription benefits, including OneDrive storage.

To determine whether you are using a retail or licensed version of Microsoft Office, use one of the following methods, depending on which version of the product you have installed.

Microsoft 365

If you’re using a Microsoft 365 product, see View Microsoft 365 licenses and services using PowerShell. Follow these steps to find your license type and other information about your version of Office.

Office LTSC 2021, Office 2019, and Office 2016

Press the Windows key + X on your keyboard to open the Quick Action menu.

Select Command Prompt (Admin).

When the security prompt appears, select Allow .

Using the command line to check the license type

Open an elevated command prompt window.

Type the following command to navigate to the Office folder.

For 32-bit (x86) version of Office

cd c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16\

For 64-bit (x64) version of Office

cd c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16\

Type cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus and then press Enter.

In this example, the screen displays license Retail Type . If you have a Volume License (VL) product, the license type is displayed as VL or Volume License .

Office 2013

Method 1: Find the DVD or ISO file for the Admin folder

This method requires that you have access to the DVD or ISO file that is used to install the Office product.

Open File Explorer and navigate to the DVD or ISO file.

Locate the folder named Admin .

If the Admin folder exists, this disc is Volume License Edition (VL).

If the Admin folder does not exist, this disc is a retail edition.

Note

Retail media contains a lowercase «r» before «.WW» in the folder name and before «WW.msi» in the MSI file name.
For example, the installation file for Proplus retail is Proplus r WW.msi in the Proplus r WW folder. In the non-retail version of Proplus, the ProplusWW.msi file in PlusplusWW.

Method 2: Use CLI

Open an elevated command prompt window.

Type the following command to navigate to the Office folder:

For 32-bit (x86) version of Office

cd c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\

For 64-bit (x64) version of Office

cd c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\

At the command prompt, type cscript ospp. vbs /dstatus and press the key ENTER .

In this example, the licensing channel is reported as RETAIL or ENTERPRISE .

What will happen to Russian users of Windows and Office

Relations between Russia and Microsoft have not yet been broken, according to some participants in the Russian software market. Experts believe that the corporation rather took a break until the geopolitical situation improves. Indirectly, this is also indicated by the fact that Microsoft and its partners in the Russian Federation refuse to comment on the loud statement of the head office. However, experts do not exclude that in the absence of changes for the better, Microsoft programs and operating systems will begin to lose functionality over time.

Silence is gold

On March 4, the American IT giant Microsoft announced the suspension of the sale of goods and services in Russia. The company’s message turned out to be stingy with details, and consequently left Russian users with many questions. For example, from the text of Microsoft Vice President Brad Smith, it is quite clear that it will not be possible to purchase new copies of software and Windows licenses in the Russian Federation for some time. At the same time, the corporation’s statement does not provide further instructions for owners of already paid subscriptions, for example, to Microsoft Office and purchased copies of Windows.

Anton Ten, Head of Corporate Sales at CommuniGate Systems, calls Microsoft’s announcement «very careful» and believes that in this situation, even the corporation itself does not quite understand what it should do with Russian users and licenses now. A similar opinion is shared by Dmitry Zavalishin, CEO of the DZ Systems group of companies. According to him, the experience of 2014, when events unfolded in Crimea, shows that companies are more likely to declare a break with the Russian market than actually leave here.

“Microsoft has been working with Russia for a long time. The loss of our market will be sensitive for the company not even because of the lost money, but due to the fact that the development of alternative solutions will inevitably spread from Russia to other countries, accelerating the replacement of Windows in the world. Some experts even believe that Microsoft’s Russian clients will get off with little bloodshed.
