MSI Afterburner is an app used the world over for graphics card monitoring, overclocking, and undervolting. It’s become pretty synonymous with general GPU tinkering, yet the app’s developer has suggested it might not have long left to live in a forum post earlier this month. MSI disagrees, telling us «we fully intend to continue with MSI Afterburner.»

MSI Afterburner is developed by Alexey ‘Unwinder’ Nicolaychuk, a Russian national who has kept the overclocking app functioning over many years. Nicolaychuk is also responsible for the development of RivaTuner Statistics Server, which is part of the foundational software layer powering Afterburner.

In a post on the Guru3D forums (via TechPowerUp ), Nicolaychuk suggests that Afterburner’s development has been «semi-abandoned. «

«…MSI afterburner project is probably dead,» Nicolaychuk says.

«War and politics are the reasons. I didn’t mention it in MSI Afterburner development news thread, but the project is semi abandoned by company during quite a long time already. Actually we’re approaching the one year mark since the day when MSI stopped performing their obligations under Afterburner license agreement due to ‘politic [sic] situation’.»

Nicolaychuk says development of the app has continued over the past 11 months, but that may also be ending soon.

«I tried to continue performing my obligations and worked on the project on my own during the last 11 months, but it resulted in nothing but disappointment; I have a feeling that I’m just beating a dead horse and waste energy on something that is no longer needed by company.  

«Anyway I’ll try to continue supporting it myself while I have some free time, but will probably need to drop it and switch to something else, allowing me to pay my bills.»

Development of the RivaTuner Statistics Server—software is pivotal to many of the functions of Afterburner—is materially separate from Afterburner and will continue, Nicolaychuk notes.

Nicolaychuk suggests the issue comes down to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and we’ve since confirmed with MSI that this is the case. MSI has stated to PC Gamer that the payments were halted due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, saying: «payments had been put on hold due to the RU/UA war and the economic regulations that entailed.»

The ongoing invasion has led to many countries and companies pulling out of Russian or reducing their footprint in the country significantly. The banking system used internationally to easily transfer funds across the globe, SWIFT, has been restricted in Russia. Many of the country’s banks have been cut-off from the system since last March. Yet according to a report by Yale , updated January 9, 2023, Micro-Star International Co. (MSI) is still operating in Russia.

On this being the end for Afterburner, MSI disagrees.

Whether in the same form or something slightly different, this doesn’t sound like the end for the Afterburner software. Though it’s unclear whether that means finding a way to pay Nicolaychuk, the sole custodian of the application for many years, or operating another plan to develop the overclocking app entirely.

MSI Afterburner software without MSI support, «project is probably dead»

Alexey “Unwinder” Nicolaychuk confirmed that Afterburner project could be dead. 

The most popular overclocking tool for modern graphics cards is facing licensing problems due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Due to sanctions, companies such as MSI are unable to perform their obligations under the agreement signed with the developer. Alexey, who is based in Russia is now continuing the project without MSI’s support.

The developer confirmed that the project has been dead for over 11 months now. The current political situation, as he explains, is preventing MSI from performing its obligations. The project is now only supported by Alexey during his spare time.

MSI Afterburner is one of the most popular tools for discrete GPU overclocking. The software is a spiritual successor to RivaTuner software, which has been used for GPU overclocking many years ago. Users may find it problematic to find an alternative that supports all many GPU vendors natively. Most brands now include their own monitoring and simple overclocking software that also controls GPU functionality such as lighting control or fan speeds. MSI also has such a tool called MSI Center.

What is worth mentioning is that MSI is still officially listing the software for newly released GPUs, including RTX 4070 Ti. The popularity of the software means that scammers are trying to take advantage of it by releasing cloned apps with malware. MSI is well aware of this fact and continues to mention the official source for the software is still MSI’s own website. The only good news is that RTSS (RivaTuner Statistic Server) is not an MSI tool, therefore it is not affected by sanctions. This statistics and overlay software has full support from Alexey and will continue to be supported as it was. That said, the 3rd party software that uses RTSS should not be impacted.

Alexey confirms that he will continue to support the Afterburner project during his free time, but this is not the full support that many of us would prefer. What is important to note is that the sanctions may not be limited to financial compensation but also access to prerelease hardware, essentially stagnating the development process or preventing it altogether.

Update: According to Hassan Mujtaba (Wccftech), MSI is now trying to solve the payment issue. There is a chance this will be sorted out, after all:

To install a Windows operating system from scratch (as opposed to pre-installed), follow the steps below.

Note: If the new version of Windows differs from the version of the operating system preinstalled on the MSI device, you will need to enter a license key.

Please follow the instructions below.

First make sure you have all of the following:

  • MSI Notebook
  • Power supply
  • Windows installation disc or USB stick

Follow the steps below to install Windows.
(Note: it is recommended to back up all data before installing the OS.)

  • Power up the laptop.
  • Insert the installation disc into the optical drive or connect a Windows USB drive.
  • Press the power button to turn on the notebook.
  • After the MSI logo screen appears, keep pressing the Delete key until the BIOS interface loads.
  • In the BIOS interface, navigate to the Boot tab using the arrow keys.
  • In the “Boot mode select” section, select UEFI (this mode is supported by the Windows 10 operating system.
  • Press the F10 key to save changes and exit the BIOS interface. After that, the computer will automatically restart.
  • Press the F10 key to save the changes and restart the computer.
  • After the MSI logo screen appears, start pressing the F11 key to display the boot menu.
  • Select the previously connected USB stick from the menu and press the Enter key. (The illustration shows an example with a USB drive. If you want to boot from the installation disk, select the optical drive from this menu).

This step is related to the partitions available on the drive. First, select the partition on which you want to install the operating system. If none of the existing partitions suits your requirements, then they should be deleted in order to then allocate disk space in accordance with your preferences.

  • If you are satisfied with the current drive partitioning, select the desired partition. It will be formatted, then the operating system will be installed on it. The data on the remaining partitions will be preserved. To continue, select the desired drive in the Name column and click the Next button.
  • If you are not satisfied with the current drive partitioning, you should delete the existing partitions and create new ones. (In this case, all data on the partitions being deleted will be lost.) To continue, select the partition you want to delete and click the Delete button.
  • After deleting all partitions, select Unallocated Space and click the New button.
  • Specify the size of the new partition in the Size field and click the Apply button. The size is specified in megabytes, so if you need, for example, 50 GB, you should enter «50000».
  • After allocating disk space as needed, select the desired partition and click the Next button.
  • The Windows Installer will automatically start and install the operating system.
  • The computer will then restart automatically. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation. Then you can enter the OS.

As a result of the installation of working programs, it turned out that there may be an incompatibility between the protection of these programs and the protection of Windows 10. Everything worked only BEFORE rebooting. After the reboot — an endless cycle of «Automatic System Restore».

I pumped up a bunch of everything — from old stocks, and from new ones of the type «WinPE10_8_Sergei_Strelec» — that is, disks with tools and utilities for restoring the health of the Windows operating system. Unfortunately, it was not possible to restore.

chkdsk /f /r x/, sfc /scannow, dism and so on — everything showed a complete absence of problems, but the system refused to start. Because there was nothing to save — I used the MSI Recovery System. In general, the system recovery system is called up by pressing the F3 key at the power-on stage. MSI Recovery System is also called by the F3 key.
