Here’s how to easily fix MSI Afterburner RTSS issue on The Witcher 3 next gen update

Announced back in 2020, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt next gen update finally got a release date last month after a lot of delay. The update promised ray-tracing, updated 4K assets (textures), and other improvements in various aspects. To showcase the improvements, a gameplay trailer was also released showing the 2015 GOTY in its next gen glory. Dubbed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Complete Edition, the game is now available on PC.

While many people like to fire up a game and get lost in the visuals, the gameplay and (sometimes) the story, some others who are more into the hardware side of things like to monitor the general usage statistics of their systems. A popular software utility MSI Afterburner is often used by users to track the usage data of their systems when gaming. However, in the case of The Witcher 3: Wid Hunt next gen update, it looks like there are issues with the Rivatuner Statistics Server (RTSS) overlay which means the usage statistics can not be displayed.

Guru3D members, upon further digging, found that a «d3d11on12.dll» file is causing the problem, preventing the RTSS overlay from working properly. Hence, deleting this file works as the RTSS overlay, or any other overlay on your system will now use the D3D12 (DirectX 12) as the default for the On-Screen Display (OSD) purposes. This DLL is not mandatory to run the game on PC at the moment so it can be deleted. However, do make sure to keep a backup of it in case the file becomes necessary. This is by far the easier solution.

Another workaround is to «Add» a separate application profile setting for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Complete Edition in RTSS. By default, RTSS uses the «Global» setting for all games which means for the new Witcher update, OSD reverts to using D3D11on12 by default instead of D3D12.

Got Witcher 3 Next Gen installed and peeked into the problem source. Game indeed ships with local copy of DirectX runtime (d3d11on12.dll located in .\bin\x64_dx12.dll), which is different from system one and which breaks all overlays dependent on it (which includes RTSS, Steam overlay and other third party products) due to version mismatch. Two solutions are available:

The first solution in unified and can be used to fix compatibility with any overlay, which is currently broken in this game. As @bobnewels correctly mentioned before, you may simply rename/remove d3d11on12.dll located in .\bin\x64_dx12.dll. This way you will force the game to use system version of this library instead of their local one and it will fix Steam, RTSS overlay and many other affected products. I guess the game developers will do the same in the nearest patches and remove d3d11on12.dll from distributive too.

Second solution way is RTSS architecture specific. RTSS contains two optional OSD renderers for D3D12 applications: D3D11on12 (used by default) and native D3D12 based. You may simply create a profile for Witcher 3 Next Gen and make RTSS using native D3D12 OSD rendered for it instead. So it won’t depend on D3D11on12 and won’t be affected by Witcher’s d3d11on12.dll versions conflict. To do it add the following profile template for it:

Hence, it should resolve the overlay issue on MSI Afterburner’s RTSS as well as any other overlays you may have on your system. In the case of the second solution, you won’t have to delete the d3d11on12.dll file, but as we mentioned above, deleting it is certainly the easier approach by far.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a game that I and many others hold dear to our hearts and it hardly needs an introduction or a review. In 2015 CDProject RED brought us one of the greatest games of this generation and solidified themselves in the hearts of gamers forever. The Witcher 3 went on to win Game of the year as well as Role-Playing game of the year in 2015 and to this day still remains at the top of the list as one of the greats. So, if you haven’t played The Witcher 3 yet, stop reading this review, click on one of the links on the side of this post, and come back 50 or so hours from now and leave a comment below about your experience!

In 2019 we rarely have a title that we want to pick back up after we’ve beaten the story if there even is a story, so put down the Fortnite for a moment while I give you a glimpse of Geralt of Rivia and his journey to find Ciri.

For the vast majority of the game, you are searching for Ciri, a young woman that is like a daughter to Geralt that has gone missing while fleeing the Wild Hunt. You’ll begin your journey in a small town in search of Yennefer of Vengerberg, a witch and love interest of Geralt’s throughout the trilogy who may have a way of divining Ciri’s location. Through endless questing in a massive open world chock-full of monster-slaying and the occasional debauchery, you find yourself a step behind Ciri in her race against the Wild Hunt.


Throughout the game, you’ll be forced to make tough choices that impact the way the game will progress and in some cases lead to the death of some of your allies. You may think the choice you’re making is the right one only to find out that what you’ve done resulted in the death or injury of someone else. The base game comes to a dazzling conclusion during a final earth-shattering battle pitting Geralt and company against the Wild Hunt and its terrifying leader Eredin.

After the base game’s final battle, CDProject RED has produced a multitude of expansion content and DLC’s such as Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine which add over 30+ hours of story and monster-slaying madness to the base game. On top of all that, The Witcher 3 allows you to play Gwent, a turn-based card game, with nearly every NPC you can interact with and accounts for dozens of hours itself.

For the year 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had some pretty awesome graphics for its time however with the rapid improvement of GPU’s and game engines like Unreal Engine if you play the game without mods you may be slightly unhappy with its soft visuals. Enter Nexus Mods. If you play on PC, and I strongly suggest you do, you will have access to a plethora of graphical and game experience-enhancing mods. I have included a list of the mods that I use at the end of this article for you to check out and set up on your own so you can fully experience The Witcher 3 in all of its glory.

Due to the inconsistency on this front for console players, I won’t sit on this topic too long, but if you compare The Witcher 3 to other games from 2015 you’ll notice that the base game is massive. The depth and realism CDProject RED was able to achieve out of their REDengine in 2015 are still impressive however with 4k retexturing and enhanced lighting mods, your mind will explode at how beautiful this world looks in 2019.

If you weren’t able to guess already, I’m a massive fan of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and I believe that every true gamer will love every moment they play it. Above all else, the immersion and emotion I felt through this game is something I haven’t felt since I played Kotor in 2003. If you love story, monster-slaying, and genuinely engaging gameplay, then The Witcher 3 is for you. How to see FPS in The Witcher 3

In this guide, we will look at several popular ways to view FPS in The Witcher 3. Recommendations are suitable for different video cards and gaming platforms.

FPS in The Witcher on Nvidia graphics cards

The GeForce Experience overlay is used to display the frame rate counter. Please note that after the update, the tool runs only on Windows 10. Older versions of the OS no longer support this utility.

To launch the overlay in the game, press the key combination Alt + Z, then select the image of the cogwheel to go to the «Settings» section. Here you need the «HUD Location» tab and the «Performance» item. Choose the location of the counter on the screen and its appearance — only frames per second or more detailed information about the operation of the PC. The menu can be closed. The counter displayed at the screen location you select is not captured by OBS Studio or other video encoders.

FPS in The Witcher on AMD Radeon

Available in AMD Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition or later. To activate the FPS counter, you need to do the following:

  • Go to Settings after opening the application interface;
  • Open the Performance category;
  • Enable the «Display indicators overlay» activator;
  • Save settings.

To quickly activate / deactivate the counter without minimizing the game, you can use the key combination Ctrl + Shift + O. In the overlay settings, you can turn off options that you are not interested in.

FPS display using MSI Afterburner

The counter is only displayed while MSI Afterburner is running. How to configure FPS display and other parameters:

  • Go to application settings;
  • Open the «Monitoring» tab;
  • In the active charts section, double-click on «Frame Rate» to make a thick checkmark appear;
  • Select this item and below, in the «Columns of graphs» section, check the box «Show in OED»;
  • In the drop-down list on the right, select the type — only text, graphics, or both options at once;
  • Apply changes.

In the same overlay, MSI Afterburner can display many other important parameters.

FPS display on Steam

  • If you play The Witcher 3 purchased through this service, you need to do the following:
  • Go to Steam settings;
  • Open the «In game» tab;
  • Check the «Enable the Steam overlay in the game» box and select the location of the FPS counter in the drop-down list below.

When entering the game, you do not need to activate the overlay separately. The function does not work in the version of the game that is not tied to Steam.

FPS display in GOG Galaxy

If you bought The Witcher in GOG Galaxy, you need to press Ctrl + Shift + Tab to display FPS.

In conclusion, it remains to add that this option is not available in the Epic Games launcher. Although the developers promised to add it, but so far things have not moved forward.

How I eliminated the cause of stuttering and frame drops in all games, and also accidentally lowered the temperature by 15 degrees / Sudo Null IT News GPU (more) and CPU (less). Using MSI Afterburner, HWiNFO64, and RivaTuner experimentally, I found out that frame drops are due to reaching the powerlimit in gpu and pl4 limit in cpu.

There are limits and always will be. Even if we remove the limits for power and current, we will run into a temperature limit, which is even more brazen than the previous ones, as it changes the frequency in sharper jumps. But there is a solution. Please under cat.

Shuttering of this kind is found even on the most powerful computers with 2080ti, 1080ti, and especially in sli configurations.

I’m using a GTX1070 GPU, CPU 6700K, 1080p@120hz screen, p750dm2 clevo (but most likely all of the following will apply to desktops as well).

I can’t call my device a laptop because of the desktop processor and the corresponding cooling.

Simply lowering the frequency by about 1-5% from jumping 1750-1680Mhz to time stable 1671Mhz using the curve function in Afterburner, stuttering almost completely disappeared.
And after turning off turbo boost at 6700k (and fixing the frequency at 4Ghz), it disappeared completely. At the same time, the GPU temperature dropped from 88 to 73 degrees.
Next, I tested with the processor at the same frequency, 4Ghz. The effect is even stronger if you take into account the effect of disabling turbo boost.

Testing was carried out in the game Rise of Tomb Raider because it has a built-in benchmark.

And most importantly, curve for my video card, with overclocking +148:

OSD I activated in MSI Afterburner settings Core clock, CPU clock, Power limit , and through the plug-in to HWiNFO64 I used indicators throttling CPU:

Just after playing for 15 minutes, I determined the minimum frequencies of the CPU and GPU after a drawdown due to heating, and set the horizontal line to 10 Mhz lower. Power limit (and other limits) should always be either active or not, and not rattle every few seconds.

A small note, many monitoring tools, the same task manager in Windows, and especially HWiNFO64 are very clearly visible on the graphs, so be careful, frame drops at regular intervals are the norm with these programs during testing. I recommend setting the chart refresh interval to every 5 seconds.

The result is a performance drop of only 0.14% (calculated from the total number of benchmark frames), an increase in average fps (top 95%), and a decrease in GPU and CPU temperatures by 15 degrees when measured on the GPU (they have a common heatsink) instead for a smoother gaming experience.

Totals:
CPU full power, GPU full power — 88 C, 72 fps
CPU low power, GPU full power — 80 C, 72 fps
CPU low power, GPU low power — 73 C, 71 fps
Unfortunately, I don’t have time to test in more detail.

PS:
About the CPU. It is necessary not to roughly turn off turbo boost, but wisely. Before switching to 4.0Ghz, I tried 4.4Ghz(overclock), 4.2Ghz, and 4.1Ghz. All of them, without exception, are not stable in time, and produce drawdowns up to 4.0Ghz. Your situation may be different. It also depends on the game, so I don’t recommend disabling turbo boost as a universal solution, rather manual selection of the maximum frequency stable over time.
