If you’re looking to build a new PC, there are many things to think about. Everything needs to be thought through from start to finish: choosing components, building a PC, and installing programs after the system is ready. Whether you are building a PC for the first time or have done it before, in this article you will find 10 common mistakes people usually make when building a computer. Avoid these mistakes and your PC build process will be much easier! Let’s take a look at them.
1. Buying an Inexpensive Poor Quality Power Supply
If you are building a new PC, one of the most talked about mistakes is buying a low quality power supply. By the time you get to the stage of buying this component, you should already have a rough idea of how much power the rest of your equipment will need. Always buy a power supply slightly larger than you think so that the extra load doesn’t affect your system.
There is also a classification system to help you with your purchase. It’s called 80plus. In it, power supplies are assigned classes from Plus to Plus Titanium. And your option will depend on your needs and budget. Don’t worry, there are affordable power supplies on the market, but always check if they are powerful enough for your machine.
2. Buying incompatible components
One of the most common mistakes when building a PC is buying incompatible components. There are several ways to find out if components are compatible. The easiest way is to add all the details you need to PCPartPicker * and the tool will determine if there are any compatibility issues. If you purchase Kingston products, you can use the PC Compatibility Search on our website or contact Technical Support for expert assistance.
3. No Chassis Rear Port Caps
The Chassis Rear Port Cap is a thin, removable metal plate that covers all inputs and outputs on the back of the PC. A common mistake is to forget to install it before the motherboard and other components are placed in the case. Keep this in mind to avoid having to disassemble an already assembled computer.
4. No motherboard supports
The PC case has all the screw holes needed to install the motherboard in the correct position. Don’t forget the supports and spacers that will lift the motherboard slightly off the chassis, which will prevent the solder points and traces on the bottom of the motherboard from shorting to the metal chassis. Safety first!
5. Incorrect installation of fans
System cooling is very important during PC operation. Installing fans helps remove hot air from your case so your system is always at the right temperature. However, it is easy to make a mistake and install the fans incorrectly. If you purchased a case with the fans already installed, there shouldn’t be any problems. However, if you need to add fans to your system, make sure they are installed correctly and that they provide airflow in the correct direction.
See our memory module installation guide.
6. Installing the processor
Some beginners don’t know how to install the processor into the socket. Improper installation of the processor can damage or even break the pins (depending on the amount of force applied). There is always a marking on one corner of the processor, which must match the markings on the board. This will indicate the correct installation method.
7. Too little or too much thermal paste
Applying the wrong amount of thermal paste can result in poor processor and system performance. The thermal paste provides heat transfer between the processor and the heatsink. Applying too little thermal paste will result in poor CPU cooling and higher CPU temperatures, which can in turn cause permanent damage.
8. Incorrect installation of memory modules
If you have an even number of memory modules, they should always be placed not close to each other. Your motherboard manual will tell you which slots to insert the memory modules into. Also make sure that the memory modules are installed correctly: if the module is inserted correctly, you will hear a click.
With the advent of DDR5, it is currently not possible to use different capacities in memory channels or banks at the same time. If you already have a 2 x 8 GB kit, you will no longer be able to add an additional 2 x 16 GB kit. If you choose to include DDR5 memory in your build, purchase the capacity that suits your needs. There may be a future BIOS update for some motherboards that will increase the flexibility of memory module capacity combinations, so check with the manufacturer.
9. Connecting cables to the wrong ports
This error can be easily avoided by checking all cables before proceeding with the next steps. All cables must be connected to the appropriate inputs or your system will not turn on and you risk damaging components. Connection points are always indicated in the manual.
10. Last but not least, read the instructions!
Manuals are critical to any successful PC build. If you want to put together a flawless system without errors, then the manual will be your best friend.
While there is no guarantee that you won’t make mistakes during your first or even second PC build, following these steps will greatly improve your chances of avoiding common mistakes.
